IMO Stoli is a terrible vodka. You need something relatively neutral, but that does not have a rubbing alcohol nose. (That is why your rum was better.) The coffee liqueur must be sweet with little bitterness, since the vodka raises the bitter notes. Hence, your problem with the chicory coffee and your being fine with your syrup. The cream should also be stirred into the drink. This is not a layered drink, but a new beverage formed through the languid dance of the three ingredients. Abide.

@Heathen I agree. I always mix the cream (or milk) in. And a side note, while a less fumy vodka can be preferable, I personally feel that vodka isn't needed at all, I often swap out the vodka for more coffee liquor. But, that's just me. A tad of spiced rum (or black spiced) is nice, too. Tastes like Christmas.

Alright, everybody, repeat: "You are not supposed to judge a recipe when altering its ingredients on the first try-out."
Basically, while you could use a better vodka or pick a different type of cream and maybe get results you'd find more palatable, using a coffee liqueur that's infused with chicory is a *_HUGE_* no-no for a recipe that doesn't call for any bittering agent! Stick to Kahlua or the like.

"Better" vodka is a difficult thing to define. In Russia, many of the the best vodkas (not always the most expensive) have neutral flavor, this is highly regarded as a quality of the best vodka. What is interesting, is that in the US Market, some of the cheapest vodkas have the most neutral flavor. This includes Popov! I would not choose Stoli for a White Russian, save it for the 2-3 ingredient mixers... my preference for WR would be Absolut, Sobieski, Tito's, or Popov. Also, the drink should be given a brief, non-violent slush around in the shaker. It chills all the ingredients and helps the fat in the cream combine with the rest of the drink.

    • @RaspK
      @RaspK 3 года назад +5

@@silvermediastudio Yes, neutral flavour is generally regarded as a good quality; at best, you want the mildest of hints of a flavour, if any. Distinct, notable scents are generally regarded as a defect in Europe.

I watched this video because I knew a white Russian had vodka and kahlua, and that is what I had available.
After watching, I promptly ignored what he did, poured half absolute, half kahlua, and threw in a splash of vitamin D milk.
    I was happy.

  • @PSquared-oo7vq

You may be making it as one "should," but IMO the White Russian must be stirred - significantly - as it naturally separates. Your incarnation would (again, IMO) taste like cream with a hint of coffee and vodka.

I really think the St George might be the problem. I LOVE all of their products, but this is one recipe where the Kahlua is the right way to go. It's sweeter and lacks any amount of the bitter that the Chicory is adding.

halfing these proportions would probably make sense for most also.

3 ounces 100 proof freezer stored Smirnoff
3 ounces half and half (I get mine from a diary, so YMMV, I recommend this is where yous pend your trendy money.)

    1.5 oz Vodka
    1.5 oz Coffee Liqueur
    2 Oz milk
Stir in ice, then add to whiskey glass. Cream is way to heavy. Also adding a bit more Coffee Liqueur gives it a bit more flavour and takes away the harshness of the vodka. It's smooth af and it deserves a place.
