No Campari, no Negroni.
I think thats what he meant with "bitters" :-P
agree 100%
Funny you said that. I just made my first one with Tanqueray , Vermouth Rosso and Compari. Result ? Just an absolutely gross drink. Worst I've ever tasted. To each it's own i guess but I sure am sorry I bought all these ingredients and ended up with a poor solvent for clogged drains.
@@SmeeUncleJoe My *first* Negroni experience was similar to yours. A family member loved them, so only knowing the basic recipe, my GF and I attempted to make one. We hated it (and funny enough, we also used Tanqueray, Martini Rosso, and Campari). Since then, I watched a number of different videos, paying attention to both the liquors used, as well as the techniques. Looking back, the first big mistake we made is that we did not spend enough time stirring the drink in the ice to properly dilute it. Instead of building it in the serving glass, I recommend using a large mixing vessel. Put the ice in first (and use plenty) then all of the liquids, then stir it for *at least* 30 seconds, but if you want it more dilute and hence more gentle in flavour, give it 45 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass, then add another large ice cube. Second, the vermouth. You can use Martini Rosso, and it will work, but there are better ones out there. Try finding Guiseppe Carpano Antica Formula vermouth...it's sweeter and will help offset the Campari's bitterness (as will proper dilution). Lastly, although the standard recipe is 1:1:1 gin to vermouth to Campari, i've seen variations out there that keep the gin at 1 part, but dial back the vermouth and/or Campari to a 0.75 or a 0.5. Some keep the vermouth and Campari equal, and some keep the vermouth 0.25 parts higher than the Campari, again to dial back the bitterness. I have developed a taste for the drink now, and I still use 1:1:1, but i make sure to properly dilute it now. If you feel like you want to like this drink, I suggest playing around with the ingredients or recipe, or, when you're out at a bar, ask them to make it for you with some of the variations above and keep track of what you like or don't like. Good luck!
Update: After dumping my first one down the drain, I gave it a second chance and as suggested I did indeed let it get diluted for about half and hour in lots of ice. End result is now I'm a Negroni addict and I can't stop drinking these. Has anyone kicked the Negroni habit ?
I quite like that you do these videos as a little hobby Jaime, they're very useful and completely unpatronising, as some celebrity RUclips channels are!
Jamie's Food Tube And Jamie's Drinks Tube were created in partnership with Bacardi, who produce Martini brand bitters. Campari is owned by a different company, Gruppo Campari, who also produce Skyy vodka and Aperol, among others. The Martini version is quite tasty, albeit not traditional. Cheers!
Benjamin Jennings Campari is a bitter. Bitter is used on Negroni, but I think is not required.
IBA specified ingredients of a Negroni: 30ml gin, 30ml sweet red vermouth, 30ml CAMPARI. Specifically CAMPARI.
This might be nice too, and it may be very similar, but it is not a Negroni. It is a Negroni(sh).
thx for the input.. now it makes a little more sense.
Excellent job jamie !! As a a red bitter I suggest campari, it's the really best and the original one for the real negroni
Source: I'm Italian
Its gin vermouth and Campari!!
Pretty sure it would taste better with irish blended whisky rather then gin. Right?
Kalaskula2000 that is actually a different excellent cocktail called a boulevardier. The botanical flavour from the gin is what makes the Negroni for me
@Firecrest *martini
@Firecrest ohh wait. martini is owned by bacardi, isnt it?
@@matthewstedman9235 I think a boulevardier uses bourbon, and not Irish whiskey
Good on Jamie for using the Bombay Saf, love it.
Jamie is the only person that's called me beautiful this year so far. I'm taking it personally. Thanks Jamie.
He's blind
Plymouth gin, Punt e Mes and Campari! Awesome. x
Ah! Perfect for breakfast
My Virgin Kitchen /
A cocktail I have yet to have !I am always up for trying new cocktails !
the color of the gin bottle is amazing
I would recommend Campari as the bitters to use
If you're quick with words, you're in deep trouble with this one.
I can hear all the real bartenders squirm in their chair... because this... this is not the right recipe.
In the Milan area (don't know for the rest of Italy) you can also have "Negroni sbagliato" (wrong Negroni) with spumante wine or Prosecco (or other sparkling dry wine) instead of gin. This is good if you want to lower the alcool rate, expecially during the hot season.
*This is good if u want to party but still trying to make yourself look refined
Why not on top of all the ingredients? :)
Nice shirt, buddy!... I think I've never seen you in anything but plaid. I navigated the underground black markets of Seoul, where I live, this afternoon to find Campari... Hard to come by in this town for some reason. Summer has begun.
Please teach me how you cut that orange slice😍, I've been cutting my oranges straight in half, than cutting in three slices but I feel like I'm getting BIG slices?? I like the way you did it..
I would guess the Martini Brand Bitters resemble Campari, though I'm not sure how well since I've never thought about getting it. I already have Campari and a few other amaros in my cabinet. The orange wedge is really not that weird, Dale Degroff does it too when it's a busy night at the bar. I don't really get where the hate is coming from. Are the Martini bitters that much worse than Campari?
I don't drink alcoholic beverages, but Mr. Oliver makes me want to have a drink. ^^
***** looks amazing! Love the amount of bitters you added - really rounds out the flavors, and with lemon - a combo that goes so well with many cocktails! Alle Grande!
I bloody love you Jamie, you're just mint pal x
I've heard a tale about this drink. Everyone in a bar is drinking Campari. An elderly gentleman.. respected member of society who happens to be a bit of a drunkard.. orders his with Gin. Everyone else catches on and says ....I'll have mine the same as old Negroni... which was his name.. and the drink was born.
It was not “a guy” who gave it is name :) it was “Count Negroni “ an aristocrat who happened to travel to London quite often :) great video Jamie I love the way you keep the mood up :)
this channel was a good idea!
David's Rath = Vermouth, Campari, Cognac with a crushed lemon wedge. Hits you fast, Plateaus you for more, whole lot of bitter flavours.
Ohhh Yummmm - My all time favorite!!!!
Jamie Oliver channel is the best and I love it so much I’ve been inspired to create a “How not to” make this drink, it was so much fun but tasted horrible:)
Not like this one I bet :)
Awesome video
is the Martini Bitters the same as Campari? I have always been put off by this cocktail because I hate Campari, and I wondered if this may be better?
Beautiful.
When I lived in the UK I had to explain this drink to so many bartenders that I'm really glad to see it's becoming popular.
That ladies and gentlemen is how you murder a classic drink!!
I've never seen a Negroni without Campari (delicious bug juice). I'm assuming that Martini Bitters is some sort of aperitif and different from what I call bitters (e.g., Angostura Bitters). Maybe it's lost in translation. I'll give Jaime the benefit of the doubt, as that looks delicious. (Even though Bombay Sapphire is way too smooth for my palate. I prefer Tanqueray for everyday delicious gin or Junipero or Hendrick's if I'm gonna pay for premium gin. Bombay Sapphire is so smooth/mild it's almost juniper flavored vodka).
I couldn't find anywhere martini bitter near where I live. Is campari bitter a good alternative? Because I saw other bitter liqueurs but they were much more darker, almost black.
+Claudisimooo Go with campari. lemme rephrase that: ONLY go with campari. Martini bitters is just not good. Also, no hints of orange juice, just the essential oils of orange peel on the rim and the top of the drink.
Get Campari. That's a real negroni. This isn't negroni. It's like making a gin and tonic and using club soda instead of tonic...its just not the right ingredient
Actual recipe: 1 part CAMPARI, 1 part gin, 1 part red semi sweet vermouth, garnish with orange peel and add a few ice cubes. NOT THIS!
Good! But please Oliver use CAMPARI and not Martini Bitter :D
In Italy we use that ;)
Antonio Marson Franchini all bartenders all over the world uses campari!
More cocktails! Please to a Gimlet :D
#Greetings from Washington DC...I absolutely love you Jamie...I'm glad you got carried away with the measurements hahaaaaaaa...:)
Love cocktail and Bloody Mary:)
و
Looked interesting. Is it medicinal tasting like a digestif?
wtf he put the ice in after the spirits instead of pouring the spirits over the ice
That would melt the ice a bit too quickly, I suppose?
No you want the ice to melt, very few people like negroni's that aren't diluted a bit.
Yes you want it diluted a bit, but not too diluted to start with. I think negronis taste best from the moment they are first made. Once the ice melts and the drink becomes watery... well... it's time for another hehe. It's a very unique drink IMO, but take it from me, do not drink too much of it, I had the worst hangover where I felt like I was dying :( - and I've had some bad hangovers in my time
Bravo.
Gin, Campari, Martini, dash of lemon juice, orange peal, thin slice of lemon, ice cubs, violent shake in the shaker and...a short black plastic straw.
Dutch Classic Negroni
Any olive oil in it?
Classic Negroni without Campari? Are you kidding me??
dang when i have my restaurant in about 10-15 years im gonna get sell this!
Got any closer to your dream?
No Jamie apperativos no not settle the stomach, that's the job of a digestivo. An apperativo opens up the taste buds and stomach
With Oliver, the non-use of Campari will be to do with product placement. I like Frankie Boyle’s depiction of him 😁
Why is almost everyone here complaining about how Jamie’s not using the proper ingredients? Specially to those self-acclaimed Bartenders. Guys, A real Bartender is all about innovative and creativity. Etc, Feel so embarrassed just reading through the comments .
Loved that one..."Negrusski" 😝😝😝
Why miss out a key ingredient ...?🤔 I don't get it..
This is what kiryu and nishiki drinks right?
When he does a big smile like at 3:01, it always looks so childlike. x3
That is how you start a war!
Martini bitter vs. Campari= good publicity for both of them.
Haha..! What a name for a cocktail..
no campari? cmooonnnnnn jamie!!!!!!!!!
Jaysus!! Tried this cocktail for the first time tonight after seeing loads of hype about it. Probably the most disgusting thing I’ve ever drank. what on earth is all the love for this drink about?
Oh, I though he was a chef, not a bartender. But this is very clear by the recipe haha
It's like having a gin and tonic without tonic...you don't just take away the defining ingredient
The only common denominator is the gin....
I totally misunderstood your comment, pal. My mistake. I thought you were likening both drinks, sorry for my weird interpretation. But you're so right can't believe he passed this off as a proper negroni without the Campari
if you use pepsi for a rum and coke its still fine. chill out you pretentious fucks
Campari is just a brand of bitter liqueur or amaro. I see Campari's marketing campaign has paid off well haha.
Happy as Larry ? Is that a proverb.......does Larry have any colloquial significance or its just a random name........btw the cocktail was nice :)
Please could you do the full recipe for jungle boogie! Easily the best cocktail ever!
Bitter is good :)
This is what happens after hosting Hannah Hart ;-) #LOL
2:45 Jamie’s got a good Russian accent
Got to be careful with pronunciation when ordering one of these.
not so much in europe.
Just say slave 😂🥃
The Negroni? Isn't that what Luis Suarez called Patrice Evra?
Guys, do not worry about putting vodka in there if you don't like Gin. Just double up on the Martini Bitters or Campari, or whichever Bitters you use, and a dash of soda if its not to your taste. Vodka is pointless and doesn't work. Anyone disagrees, I'd be happy to elaborate further.
People, instead of making up funny names, you should know that there are at least other two well known versions, Americano, which is the original one, with seltz instead of gin, eventually not enough for Count Camillo Negroni, and Sbagliato (which means wrong), with Brut, again instead of gin
Ok guys: 1,5 oz gin + 1 oz Vermouth + 1 oz Campari. That's a proper Negroni.
I like mine with equal measures because I usually have it before food and have a beer or something with food. But to each his own!
Any dry gin would have done fine
Any sweet vermouth would have done fine
The only thing that must be in Negroni, he left out...
damn you , making people watch you drink cocktails !!! D: did mommie not taught you sharing ???
I didn't even know that Martini made a bitters in the style of Campari. Hmmmm....still think Campari wins in this cocktail. Too much ice as well. I do like the squeeze technique on the fruit though.
I'm no bartender dude, but I do a fair amount of research on cocktails. There are about as many recipes as there are bartenders. In truth, recipes are always open to interpretation and adjustments. SO......
uhh more cocktails please
Great chef, bad bartender 😂
and eternity is eternal
strange orange color, maybe it's the camera, maybe my screen... one of my favourite ;)
This will be done for next weeks, "Ditch the kids and husbands", night out with the girls.
Is this popular within the African American communities?
In Europe? They are simply black here and no one has a problem with it. Go Europe.
with rum its called Negarrroni
That is NOT how you make a Negroni Oliver
ice first man!!!! 3 cubes over!!!!! dammit!!!
Stick with your pots and pans!!!
Where is the campari damn it!?
facepalm
3 of them after couple of beer and nice bar snacks deleted my memory.......
IBA specified ingredients of a Negroni: 30ml gin, 30ml sweet red vermouth, 30ml CAMPARI. Specifically CAMPARI, not just any bitter the people doing a product placement for another brand gave you. No CAMPARI, no NEGRONI.
Stick to Sunday roasts and sausages Jamie.
Why no Campari???
Never touch ice with your hands.
Hear hear !
looks good but he's no bartender lol
who's Larry?
Just having one now, too bitter for me
Who's lary and why is she happy?
No Negroni without Campari =(
Oh why don't we call it "the slimy limey"
I can't watch how he handles the ice. It's not parmesan that you sprinkle over pasta, Jamie!
Por favor este hombre se olvida de k no está cocinando, está preparando cócteles, por favor no cojas los hielos con la mano Jamie, graciasss
Replace gin with whisky , Boulevardier
What did you say?
Set video speed to 0,5 or 0,25.... this is what happens with too many of these drinks ;)
I've found Dom GOODMAN
CAMPARI ! NO MARTINI BITTER !!!!
