Subaru has long prided itself in being a customer-centered company an entire market segment has just been written off. Someone needs to remind these folks in the boardrooms that when I stop racing that they stop creating a bigger than life persona for the vehicles are trying to sell. I hope Subaru will continue to do product development and improvements and continue the STI work on the existing platforms. Direct drive electric motors and the flexibility within this type of computer control system might be something just made for rally cars but we need to make sure the technology first. These cars should race side by side

I just purchased a 2020 STI @tge end of January this year and I had a 2017 base model WRX. I don't think Subaru will drop the STI. Holy cow was that an eye opener! Sold it it before any broken ringlands and P0304 misfire codes. Subaru is a very average car manufacturer. Toyota, Honda and Mazda are better imo.

Subaru became a mom mobile company through this decision. They should come out with a turbo brz and slap a STI logo on it as no one looks at the brz as a performance car. I don't think they'll ditch the branding name plate of STI as its become so recognizable with subaru performance. I did think to myself when they came out with a GT version of the new WRX that it was weird instead of the normal limited, sport and premium branding they have been doing in all there lines. Maybe they will do a GT with a manual still.

The reason the STi was killed was because of emission laws. Subaru Does not have enough EV vehicles to offset the Fuel consumption of the STi. Toyota is not trying to kill off Subaru and the corolla GR is not the new STi. Toyota has enough EV vehicles and hybrid to off set the Co2 to sell the Supra and the GR series of cars. Subaru is moving away from performance cars and the STi branding with be put on vehicles as a trim like the ford exploder ST. Unfortunately Subaru wants to be full electric by 2040. Lucky for anyone with a 2020-21 STi keep them they are going to keep going up in value. People say well how is ford able to make the mustang and big trucks well ford was smart and invested in the EV mustang to offset the Co2 laws. Subaru is a small company and did not have the ability to create electric vehicles..

I bet the BRZ and Forester will start getting STI packages that are basically just brakes, suspension and a badge. If not, then I wouldn't be surprised if the STI makes a proper return as a hybrid, which would be in line with current WRC trends. Just look at what the Ford Fusion is capable of.
Edit: I'm also calling that they're going to release a lifted WRX Wilderness by 2025. I could see Subaru finding a niche with that considering they've lifted almost everything else in their line-up at this point. I feel like a lifted sedan would be unique in todays market, even if I really don't want it lol

I guess when they say the 90's was the golden era of performance cars it really holds true, it's pathetic what auto manufactures are producing today, and ending production. Vehicles slapped with large infotainment systems and electric engines rather than focusing on improving and innovating on looks, performance, efficiency and improved reliability. I'm very glad to be apart of both the motorcycle community and car community, at the very least motorcycle companies like Aprilia, Ducati, Kawasaki, and Yamaha continue to innovate and produce some of the best two wheeled machines on the planet.

At first I was MAD AF!! But with the 2022 WRX GT price at $42K, Subaru probably didn't have a way to get the WRX STi price under $45K. At that price point the STi would've flopped anyway. Hopefully Subaru will trickle some STi features into the GT or S4 trim. The 2022 WRX is still a great platform.

    • @gjtt

When then the STi first came out in 05 was 32k. Adjusted for inflation is 46k today which is likely very close to the starting point and options being 50k or so. People would have paid that for the top of the line STi model with new engine/power/styling/body, etc.

All I know is my GT will be here in a few weeks. I’m 15 years older now than I was when I owned my first STi. My clutch leg is bad, I have neighbors in a respectable neighborhood, I’m “married to an automatic”, I’m in a leadership position at work, and I volunteer giving veterans rides to the VA. In most respects, I’ve “outgrown” the STi.
I think Subaru is acknowledging that it’s “race boy” fan base is getting older. With a stage 2 tune, one can get close to Golf R numbers with this car to give the young hooners something to do while giving us older guys who will never mod the car a good, reliable, zippy rig that rules in the snow.
I think Subaru taking its time to get the STi “right” is very important, as the next gen will be the catalyst for what performance cars will be in the future.

If new STI were not cancelled, it would be build on fa24 platform, so it's electric steering assist and no rumble. Therefore it wouldn't be as connected as previous gen, it would mostly add only more power with higher rmp red line, and a wing to VB WRX. More power is a nice thing but it's expensive to add it - stronger transmission, shafts and engine components are needed and all those stronger parts would be produced only for one trim of one low volume model. So Subaru's decision is understandable and I believe consumers can tolerate that fact that they won't get more power - new wrx is still far from being helpless and, as I said above, power would be just one of only two advantages of new STI. But wing! Subaru! Save at least that classic wing! It's cheap and cool and makes your cars look special, that wouldn't require lot of investments, and may attract many people.

The WRC specs have hybrid system in them already. If you follow Launch Control, you will see that Subaru already went all out with their current-gen ICE STI. So they literally don't have any production-ready performance hybrid system on the table. Their PZEV is not that impressive. Yes, they can definitely build something like the Gemera, with an STI manual transmission. The technology is out there. It's just not economical enough yet. So who will buy it? It simply doesn't make sense for them financially.

5:20, no car company will completely ditch a market segment forever. Because management changes, market changes, nobody know what the future will be. In early 2000's, Honda completely got out of performance cars segment (when the Integra and NSX ended in North America). Honda wants to be more like Toyota, selling SUV and family vehicles. Eventually that failed, because Honda never overtook Toyota's market leadership in those segments. Honda then circle back to performance cars. Type R came to North America. New NSX came back too. Lesson: No corporation will stay at the same spot forever.

All you have to do is look at tesla for the future.
Why do you think Subaru Dropped one of their main vehicles that people buy to modify?
Because they don't want you working on your own vehicle; they would rather you be forced to come to them for anything.
From what I understand you basically agree to not work on your own vehicle when buying a tesla.
Auto makers already lobby to keep as much of the world dependent on highway systems (especially in the U.S.) as it is.
Instead of trying to reduce the actual number of vehicles on the road; which would dramatically reduce emissions.
Let's Just keep building more cars, Keep ignoring the fact that there are obscene amounts of old POV waste all over the world.
Nope, just blame everything on the people for driving to much and then force them to buy MORE CARS.

Great news story. STI gone. Long time overdue!!! Just a rebadged GT anyway. Was a great car for long slow drives on the highway! Had to sell my 2018 STI ASAP after just 4 months. Never good enough for WRC. Subaru now ready to sell their brand new 1200kg, 300+kw rally rocket like the old days!!!

But really they're not smart enough to realize that the badge of Subaru is carried on the front of a rally car globally. And I think they're in the position of where they're trying to figure out if they want to stamp out cookie cutter cars

Electric shit STI = No reason to look forward at Subaru anymore. They killed the only good car that they had in their lineup all this years. Buy Audi RS3 instead, F.... Subaru for ignoring the STI clients. They know that the last thing we wanted is an electronic/hybrid STI junk.

Idk why everyone is misinterpreting this... just so we're clear, subaru will continue to make wrx/stis up until the electric model is released. So yes there will be a 2022-23 wrx/sti... it'll just be the same as the 2020.
