    Mary's story is so sad! She was promised to several men, but they fell through, her mother was exiled from court, she was forced to sign a document declaring her a bastard, was a lady's maid to her half-sister, didn't see her mother for years, and was unable to be by her side as she died, watched her father married again and again, even to a woman younger than her, while she remained unmarried, as while the Catholic church saw her as legitimate, Henry didn't want an alliance with those countries, and the others wouldn't marry her because they DID see her as a bastard.
    She was pushed aside by her own brother, as he (and lords pushing him to do so) signed off the crown to a 15-year-old Lady Jane Grey, instead of her fathers will of the throne passing to her, if Edward had no heirs. Public outrage followed. Mary was forced to kill Jane, despite almost clearing her charges, as Jane's family tried to overthrow her.
    Her marriage was looked down upon by lords and the public, she never had any heirs, as what she thought to be a baby turned out to be a -believed- cancer forming instead, giving her the usual symptoms of pregnancy.
    There were plenty of people who didn't like that she reinduced the Catholic church instead of the Protestant one, and there were attemps to overthrow and/or assassinate her, forcing her to put her sister in the Tower, due to suspicions of her being part of them, or even having instigated one.
    Due to Protestant rebels spreading propaganda against her, she became known as "Bloody Mary" for her 300 killings, most by burning, and most of them rebels. HOWEVER, this image is very much unfair. Poor Mary killed less people in her reign, as her brother who killed 600, and her sister who killed 37.000. Her whole image is warped, and if not for that propaganda, she would not be that famous, other than as Mary I, queen before Elizabeth. It is quite sad, that she is never shown to have been a women fighting for what she believed in, and not a horrible-tyrant-dictator- evil-queen. She may not have been great, but she could have been MUCH worse.
    I LOVE the animatic though!

      Sometimes I wonder if the reason why Mary didn't sign the death warrant for Elizabeth was because she understood what it was like having her brother sign a warrant that made someone else the Queen instead of Mary.

      However if we look Elizabeth story, we'll find that her childhood wasn't that good either in fact I'm pretty sure it was worse. I mean come on she lost her mother at a very young age, she had an older half-sister that hated her, she was forced upon by other men, and makeup killed her.

    I really love when portrayals of Mary I highlight her as tragic, but not dare forget how much of a monster she was. Tragedy aside, she still chose to become a monster, and history will never dare forget that. Well done.

    • @TamaraMićunović-t5y
      @TamaraMićunović-t5y 7 дней назад

      I don't think it was Mary's choice to become a "monster." Her future self is a consequence of her father's relationship to her, and not just her father's, but her brother's, her husband's, and Anne Boleyn's.
      Her father didn't care if she was sick or healthy, mentally or physically. He was a good father in the beginning, when he still thought there was a chance to support his desire for a son. When he saw that this could not happen, his good father figure collapsed. Then he married Anne Boleyn, who ALSO treated Mary badly. Anne Boleyn had her own conditions and wanted to have good relations with Mary because of her popularity and her desire for Mary to recognize her as queen, because if Mary recognized her, her subjects would also recognize her as queen. Mary, however, did not want to call her mother a liar before God (if she acknowledged Anne Boleyn, she would also acknowledge her mother's marriage with Arthur, Henry's late brother, consummated, which she swore BEFORE God she was not), nor herself a bastard. Her father celebrated the death of Catherine of Aragon with Anne Boleyn, what's worse, he did not give Mary permission to see her mother, to correspond, and not even to say goodbye to her before her death. Which is SICK! Henry completely renounced the fact that she said "no" to recognizing him as the head of the Church of England, nor Anne Boleyn as queen, nor his and Catherine's marriage as invalid and annulled.
      Edward VI, her brother, declared her a bastard because of the difference in religion and did not even want to remember that she was his second mother growing up. Instead, he took the crown from her (and Elizabeth's too) and gave it to someone else, very inexperienced. That he so desperately sought a Protestant as an heir killed poor Jane Gray in the end. Mary had no choice but to execute her.
      She loved her husband, who wasn't there when she dealt with the phantom pregnancies, which tore what little heart was left to tear as Henry, Anne, and Edward tore it apart for no reason. Philip still had to add a dose of pain and burden on her back. He was not there in her last days, nor did he go to her funeral, and, although it is stated in his letter to his sister Joan that he cared for her and was grieving, I highly doubt it, for he was not there when she needed him most, and, instead of of that, had affairs.
      Anne Boleyn treated her like a servant and didn't care about her, unlike the other stepmothers she had.
      Religion was the only thing that did not leave and betray Mary, and was the only comfort in her life. No wonder she wanted to keep Catholicism in England as the official religion, although I find her actions to be bad. And others did what she did, maybe even worse. I think the only monster here was Henry, but that's just my opinion. I respect your opinion and understand it, but keep in mind that it was not her choice or fault. She would have been the best Tudor in my opinion if her father had been better and had less doubts about her abilities because of her gender.

    HOLY CRAP!!!! This is disturbing but so beautiful at the same time. I feel so bad for Mary! I know she did some horrible things but I can’t bring myself to hate her. She put up a hardened exterior but I truly believe that deep down she was a scared, lonely girl. I would really appreciate seeing a full version of this. You don’t have to, but I would really appreciate it.

    • @TamaraMićunović-t5y
      @TamaraMićunović-t5y 7 дней назад

      Yes, she was just scared, sad, depressed, sensitive, lonely, and also kind (not always, but she did something, raised Edward, spared Elizabeth from death, and really cared for both of them and was like a mother to them). She wasn't doing the best things, but neither was Henry, and no one turned on him, the one who destroyed the lives of those closest to him and was the ultimate tyrant, but he was a good person and father until the obsession with his son entered his mind, when chances slipped through his fingers. I think a lot of people forget that she wasn't a monster, and how many times she gave her heart in the palm of her hand to someone to straighten it out and fill it when they destroyed it, and that someone, Philip II, broke it even more times and wasn't there for her as she passed through fake pregnancies and deep depression to tell her everything will be okay and comfort her. He also had affairs, and if I could write anyone's destiny, I would have prepared for Mary the most beautiful and best destiny possible instead of this ultimate tragedy.

      I agree! I mean, I’m sure the creators had a valid reason for the short running time but I would have liked to see more. One detail that always sticks with me was that Jane Seymour brought Mary to Court. I hear that their relationship was remarkably close. Although I understand why, I’m kind of saddened that their relationship is rarely ever explored or even mentioned.

      Henry VIII was worse, possibly. He killed Catherine Howard, who was a child. Some sources say she committed adultery and some don't so it's hard to say but even if she was guilty she was just a child and I think Mary was less cruel than the other Tudors to be honest though I think what she did was horrible and the result of suffering and strong desire.

    She didn't deserved what happened to her, but what she did was extremely wrong

    • @TamaraMićunović-t5y
      @TamaraMićunović-t5y 7 дней назад

      Yes, but she also did good things for her people, but those people could just change their religion too. At the beginning of her reign, Mary showed extreme religious solidarity, but something happened to change her mind, either phantom pregnancies, great desire, shadows of a sad past, or just a bad relationship with her husband. Religion became more intimate to her then, when she suffered the most, and she wanted it to be established in the state. But, you have to admit, she wasn't any worse than Henry and, although I see what she did as understandable from her point of view and wrong, I have a great sympathy for her.

However, Mary and Elizabeth (who were half sisters) got along quite well and were quite close, but poor Elizabeth had to watch Mary (the woman that raised her and had a close connection with) fall into despair because of Henry's actions (and what Anne.B has done to her).

      It’s more complicated than that. See, a lot of the teachings of Catholic rebels were less based on the “love thy neighbor as thyself” and “judge not lest ye be judged” principles. They were much more fire and brimstone. See, the belief at the time was that you had to burn the heretics or else you were doomed to suffer along with them eternally.
      It’s possible that some of the rebels took advantage of Mary’s vulnerable state. That’s not to say that she’s entirely blameless. What I am saying is that she likely fell for this fear-mongering agenda because she feared for her soul and because she may have felt she had to avenge what had been taken from her.
