  • Finally time to repair the rusty wheelarch.. and i have a new exhaust for my Mercedes!! Cutting the rust out is one thing but welding thin steel might prove to be a challenge. After this it's almost ready for paint!

    Little tip for welding: first, get an automatic dimming mask. It'll make a world of difference, and second - rather than trying to hold a light in one hand and the welding torch in the other, fasten a light to the front of the welding mask.
    Good auto dimming masks. Are under £50 from Machine Mart.

    • @malp6280
      @malp6280 2 года назад +1

      having the basic mask which a background light would be far better for a amateur DIY welder etc even with a dimming mask, good background light is required having an additional light source is abit OTT....
      the best tip would be opt for a TIG welding set-up OR a gasless mig welding set-up over the stick welding set-up seen (arc welding).. as you've less control, more heat etc going into the metal then you really need which always results in more mistakes..
      on-top of that, being in a better more suitable position to see the entire area being worked on aka would've been better laying down OR propped-up comfortably in the in a lower position with a direct light source onto the working area, rather then being scrunched-up in the wheel arch etc

      Does he realize the mask also protects his face from radiation and UV? UV radiation in a welding arc will burn unprotected skin just like UV radiation in sunlight.

    Good one Jack. Do remember to use Acid etch primer on bare metal to ensure proper adhesion. If using body filler no acid etch under it otherwise it reacts with the feather edge.
    You can get U-Pol Acid etch in aerosol.
    You only need light coat. Heavy coats not recommended. Then normal primer & top coat over the top.
    All the best mate.
    Mike.

    I did a Classic Car restoration course in 1990.My teacher was old school used a very small amount of filler to get the correct shape.He used lead loading it's quite a art but not to difficult to master with a lots of practice and very satisfying when the lead doesn't fall off.Last much longer then filler.If that's your first attempt of welding not bad .You will get better with practice.I have been restoring classic for 40 years and a few times I have been to Aand E to have pieces of metal taken out it bloody hurts.So other people have mentioned it wear stafey goggles.Regards Ron

    For a first attempt you've done well . Just make sure your metal is really clean and always try and cut it so it follows the curve. And weld your new section so it laps on the outside then water can't get between the layers from the inside . I would have cut more of the outer arch away so you could weld the inner arch from the outside as you did with the outer panel . Well done !

    Looks great Jack! I'd never attempt to weld a panel, but then I don't even have a welder! I notice some camera flicker - if you haven't already, set your camera to 25 or 50 frames per second rather than 30 or 60fps as is likely the default, and that flickering problem will magically disappear!

    • @mikeclifton7778
      @mikeclifton7778 2 года назад +2

      Good call on the frame rate there, though as the UK mains frequency is 50Hz isn't it likely to be worse to set the camera to 50Hz?

    • @thesushifiend
      @thesushifiend 2 года назад +2

      @@mikeclifton7778 No, the frame rate should be a multiple of the mains frequency to minimise flicker. If you’re in a 60Hz country, try setting your phone’s camera to 25 or 50fps and you’ll see flicker. If the frame rate matches, the camera will sample a frame at the same point in the brightness cycle and so the perceived brightness will be stable. You can test it on any phone camera. I’m sure GoPros work the same. On my Sony mirrorless camera, you have to select either NTSC or PAL and then you either get 24/30/60/120 in NTSC or 24/25/50/100 in PAL. The 24 is because that’s the frame rate standard for cinema where special lighting or natural light would be in use anyway.

    That is amazing, your welding is great for DIY job in your own garage, I doubt even most body shops would bother to do any better, not because they can't but because they could not care ... they would just weld it to stay in place and cover any pin holes with filler. So I would argue your probably do better job of it at home than in professional shop.
