- How to change out an existing Oatey drain to a Flo FX custom drain for tile showers without removing any concrete. Every Flo Fx bonding flange comes with an adapter to connect to an existing 3 piece Oatey or similar drain. This saves a lot of work when switching from an old school type drain with a pan liner to a new bonded waterproofing system like Schluter.

side note, when using pvc, abs or all purpose glue, you have to hold the joining parts together with pressure for a little while because when it’s fusing together it tends push out the outward

I really wish I had started watching all of your videos before I began my bathroom remodel. I would have definitely gone with the FLO FX drain system rather than the traditional pre-slope, oatey style drain, liner, top-pan, etc.... I feel enlightened with so many of the videos I've watched, but I'm well past that point now to reverse course. Let's hope I did a good enough job with the older methods.

That is indeed well thought drain with great build quality, for instance,
- inner flange covers 2” pipe edge when attached.
- takes guess work out when it comes to calculate height of 2” pipe, you just cut it flat with substrate you want drain to sit on
- drain has a lot of ridges and crevices that beside structural strength help to reliably set it in thinset
- fleece is not peeling off if you want to clean out bit of thin-set off of it with rug.
- square shape helps to center drain or check level with torpedo level.
Cost wise with grate it comes cheaper than any of Kerdi, Laticrete and etc
I wish they offer trendy linear drain options at some point.

isn't there supposed to be a pvc liner in between the two flanges? And what about the weep holes? Did the caulking fill them?

I've noticed that in many shower drain videos by many different people, and almost all were professional installers! They instead struggled using slip-joint pliers, rib-joint pliers and adjustable wrenches, but no one used a socket wrench. Totally bizarre to say the least. I just installed a new shower drain and yes, I used a socket wrench.
We rarely have to tighten bolts on a drain ;) But yes a socket set or better yet an impact hex driver!
Silver metallic Sharpie shows up great on dark surfaces.
I use a Unibit (step drill) on plastic.

I'm going to order this Flo fx from you, I have a question, when we added the bottom flange and cemented the concrete floor it was done a little crooked, am I able to correct that when I add this Flo fx drain? Does it have a little room to level it when you glue into this bottom flange? 🤦♂️

What is the advantage of using the flow efx drain? It's not cheap and it will be covered up by tile. What am I missing here?
What about a guy like me who's paranoid and wants a belt and suspenders installation? Can I install a liner pan and clamp it to the old school drain, then build the sloped float to the flow-fx adapter? Go over it all with hydro ban liquid membrane? Tiling plywood floor.

I’ve got my old flimsy 1/2” plywood sheeting up and my 2x10 joists from the late 1960’s are all uneven. I’m thinking of sistering some 2x8’s to make everything even and level but not sure if 2x8’s are too small, can I glue and screw or do I need to bolt them etc. Thanks, love tour videos and your attitude.

Love your content! Learned so much!! Question - I have a basement laundry room with a floor drain that I am tiling. I am breaking the concrete out to install new drain and reslope the concrete floor. Would I recess the FloFX into the concrete and then have the ditra go right up to the grate edge then tile? Not really sure what the layering should be since it's not in a mudbed. Do you have any videos on that?
We had a plumber cut out concrete and install a drain where we are installing a shower. He just left a plastic pipe sticking out 6 inches and said when you install drain just cut it to fit. Will that Flo FX bonding flange connect directly to it? That black plastic or PVC pipe whatever it is is about 2 3/8 inch OD and 1 7/8 inch ID.

No if using water in water out method. It’s fine if doing a surface applied waterproof method. But water in/out method will wick.

Does Flo FX make the adapter with the round bonding flange for a Schluter shower tray? When i use the Schluter Adapter Kit for existing drain flanges I always need to add 2 1/2 inch sheets of backerboard to build the pan up to height and have the bonding flange sit flush in the pan.

What is the outer diameter of the flo fx drain pipe?
Do you have a video showing the prep work to install tile and the "finished drain" after pre slope/mud mud and bonding flange are installed? Trying to wrap my head around the weep holes and the drain rock i've seen in other installs. Does the Flow FX not need weep holes?

Hello everyone can I leave the existing rubber pan liner and dry bed (old style). convert to the flofx and install new dry bed on top of the old dry bed as if I would be starting new with the flofx. system ? thanks

Hey Issac, will this conversion block the weep holes of the two stage drain? Is this to convert a traditional water in water out pan into a waterproof pan by waterproofing the top with membrane?
this drain requires a membrane over it thus the weep holes are no longer needed.

Okay, I'm missing the "why" here. What is the point/advantage?
I use this bc it eliminates a lot of work in a shower build. I don't have to put in a pre-slope and wait a day for that to dry and I don't have to use a liner. So that alone eliminates a day or more of waiting. You can demo, get the wallboards up, and mud pan in one day. waterproof the next and start tiling on day 3.
There isn’t any. Us tile guys just like doing stupid stuff. Nothing to see here. Go find some painter to harass. Ask him why he puts his brush in a back and stuck it in the fridge. Give him hell!

No, surface waterproofing is applied to the top of the mortar bed.

Yeah because the whole purpose of the drain is to NOT use a pan liner. It would creat problems.

Hey Mark! I read on the instructions on the bottle and it said UPC requires the use of purple primer on all connections. But I assume most municipalities are ok with no primer on any connections under 4" diameter that do not have pressure. I think its anything over 2" needs primer if it is under pressure like irrigation pipe. Maybe some others can chime in on that who know a little more.

Great question. Only a FloFX grate will fit.

I dont get it. any water which gets through the floor tile grout- and it will - will just slop around under the tiles. cause odor and mould. This is a bad setup. Use a puddle flange instead ! the flange is recessed into the substrata so it is level with the substrate top surface. Seal the floor and then any water penetration will go down the drain and keep the underside dry. USe A Puddle Flange !

Why are those drains better?
Quite a few reasons why I like them better than Schluter or Laticrete drains. As far as why they are better than the Oatey's, it's more about just doing one slope and overall a better system in my opinion.

$100 just for a drain? That’s just foolish. $45 for the grate that costs about $6 to make is something a shady company does. The rest of the drain is pvc which is the cheapest of all plastics to buy. $40 for the complete drain assembly would sell 2x as many units and be a very popular choice creating more sales. I’m adding another shower in a couple weeks and would buy 2 if the price wasn’t so ridiculous. Sorry I don’t waste money on shower drains.
No linear drain is a non-starter. Unless is a small ‘phone booth’ shower, single center drains are impractical and unsightly. We haven’t done a centered drain like that in over 5 years, which is 7 home builds.
7 home builds in 5 years...big deal. Isaac has done hundreds. Make your own video, maybe you'll learn something and teach others. A troll always has shit comments but never proof of his own good work.
Schluter drain seems simple and effective compared to this

Schluter drain is good but definitely not as strong and you have to by a special adapter kit if you want to use an existing drain like I showed in this video.
