Moving to a new city won't make you happy (and that's okay)

  • In this video, I want to tell you why moving or traveling never gives me the things that I want - and how that somehow always ends up being exactly what I need.

I moved abroad to study and I ended up becoming a completely different person and every summer/christmas when I moved home I became depressed. When my studies finished I had no idea what to do, so I decided it must be traveling/being away from home. Spent the next 2 years working bad jobs to save up and travel, while those experiences were incredible they were in no way perfect. Lots of challenge, learning, struggle and a reminder of the different issues in my life. I came home after one and Covid happened so I ended up getting super focused on self development and trying to figure my life out, and in many ways I did. I find I have a lot of limitations living at home with my family and see moving out/away as a way to learn all the things I need to (saving, living on my own, socialising as an adult...) but I'm excited about the future and see so many possibilities, I see the path forward

Finally moving from NYC to Chicago at the end of this month and I thought I would happy (I am!) but I had a wave of sadness hit me and cried. I know the move will be good for me but I’m managing my expectations

Thanks for the insight. I am contemplating moving from a small/medium sized city (population 200k) to Atlanta (City B). I’ve been forced to work on myself after a breakup in March. Tried to do new things and create new relationships but I’ve found it to be quite difficult in the city i’m in because of the general age demographics (mostly older people in my city). All my highschool friends are in the military now and I’m still at my parents house at 24 years old with a remote job. It’s about time I leave and start my own life. I appreciate your videos!!!

Thanks for sharing! Breakups are hard, but can often lead to meaningful personal growth and newfound freedom. Good on you!
It sounds like Atlanta could create an environment that’s more aligned to your desire to connect with new people. Have you had the opportunity to spend time there, research communities you could connect with, etc? Seems like it’d make sense for you!

Love hearing your insight, not planning on moving but my adult son is, so thanks for sharing your experiences. Helps me to have a better perspective to have a meaningful discussion about this with him. I’ve moved to two different cities in the Southeast in my life and both times was super rushed and I lost things and it seemed to trigger hoarding -but got help and now the house is (almost)spotless except for one room but it took a lot of work.

Thank you for the video Tyler! This really resonates with me as I'm contemplating a move from City A (Atlanta) after 7 years to City B (Austin or Miami). I have a remote job so I would keep the same job for now but I feel like a need a change and my fears and challenges are precisely what you brought up in this video. Would you still recommend a move to Austin for someone to move alone (I'm 31) in 2024?

Thanks for watching and sharing a bit about your situation! I think Austin is one of the best cities in the US to move to, particularly if you’re doing it solo. People here are very friendly, there are lots of events and many “transplants” who are open to connecting.
I’ve heard Miami is also a great place to be right now - although it may contain a heavier focus on of status and wealth, while Austin is more down to earth. Both, expensive!
That’s awesome that your remote job allows for flexibility. Are any specific fears/concerns most prominent for you right now? Thanks again for watching.

@@tylerjkeenan I'm glad to hear that you think Austin is a good place to move to! I've heard great things besides the heat :D The biggest fears/concerns for me would be to moving to let's say Austin and not knowing anyone and starting all over with trying to get into social circles and build connections with people. Also getting familiarized with what neighborhoods are good/bad to live in.

Thank you for your videos and all the great support you are bringing to people facing the same challenges ! For me about 18 months ago I came to the USA from another continent, where I had to leave everything behind, my family, friends, house and dogs 😢… I had that motivation that once I’m in the USA I will work hard and progress and explore many new things… I didn’t consider that I might have homesickness or get depressed…until I changed my current job to make another move to a new city (Gainesville) in a new state … only after being accepted in my new job I felt homesick, scared and anxious about what struggle might be there waiting for me and if I can make it again or not, and an endless cycle of « what if » … I started ruminating on how things will be once there, and how can I adjust myself again… I do struggle with general anxiety btw … I feel lost and scared… what do you advise me. Thanks

Hi there, thanks for sharing your story. That sounds challenging, but I have confidence you can get through it! You may find value in two of my other videos: "How to make the greatest comeback of your life" and the other "Meet people in a new city without being extroverted". Both of those videos cover some ideas that helped me get out of a major rut. Thanks again for watching/commenting.
