    I moved to California last year because I had an awesome job offer in San Diego. I literally have never been so disappointed in my life. People's ideal of California is living in picture of Venice beach everyday all day. In reality, it's a city just like every other except the weather is nicer. Palm trees and sandy beaches only hold their value for so long and eventually you settle in and nothing is any different.

      You (like most people, I think) probably aren't really taking advantage of all the places you can go and things you can do there; and I did live there for a few years when I was in the Marines. The difference between me and my local friends was that (and this will date me) I kept a copy of Fodor's San Diego (a travel guide book, if you're not as old as me) in the glove box of my car and every weekend I was finding new places with the help of that book and I got to know Southern California better than my local friends, while they'd taken it for granted their whole lives. Now I go out there for vacation and I use Atlas Obscura and I explore like I always did, there are a million amazing things to do and see there! At the most basic level, you've got the ocean, the mountains and the desert all within a couple of hours of each other!! Why don't I live there now? I like to own a decent house and eat better than crackers and cheese whiz every day. LOL

    I moved to California from Massachusetts just about 3 years ago. I am still VERY happy about my decision to move! It's just a matter of being grateful for what you have. Once you get perspective of living somewhere where it's too cold 75% of the year, you enjoy every day of sunlight and incredible views.

    It's actually very amazing here with the mountains and wild life. Plus we're all pretty wealthy because of all the oil,gold and military training here for harsh conditions in the center of Alaska. It's only 65 degrees right now but in the summer down south it can be up to 80.
    Winter though............... yeah.

    I personally suffered from depression my whole life. I was born and currently live in california. I would have to say that ever since I got on drugs to treat it life is much more satisfying. It didn't matter where I was I wasn't a happy person. It has to do with the chemistry of the person in my opinion. Even if I had a decent income it would not have mattered.

  • @catgumart
    @catgumart 11 лет назад +3

    I agree with your comment 100 percent... having no purpose and having unnecessary wealth, and being decadent,careless with money will make problems..but if a person has a decent living income they can do a lot to make themselves happy and can be potentially much happier than someone struggling, straining under economic hardship and all its added problems.

  • @DripStopShop
    @DripStopShop 12 лет назад

    it's actually a very deep-seeded part of our evolution to build something or do something meaningful. growth was what caused the first cells to form and the first cells to combine into a multicellular organism (much like how people combine to form an organization). also, i didnt say that doing something productive/meaningful is the only variable in our happiness. that would be ignoring the value of more immediate forms of happiness as well as perspective.

  • @DripStopShop
    @DripStopShop 12 лет назад +1

    living life in a meaningful way, pursuing goals, etc. are all actions taken to increase happiness. it's impossible to make a move that isnt aimed at increasing your happiness. do you disagree?

    The funny thing is giving up on your dreams and not constantly worrying about achieving them constantly, actually opens you up and gives you alot more energy to actually achieve these goals. You have to get to a point where you say "I'll be content with my life in my current state, but if I happen to fulfill my dreams then it will be a nice extra bonus."

  • @DASBIGUN

    yea, and what I am saying is that the government would allocate people to the areas where they can do the best they can after giving them at least a general education. Then after that they would assign whom would do best in what area's, like for instance this entire conversation we are having may make us illegible for low position (maybe over a town or small city) government. Others that they d not see much in would probablly get a farming position or some like a fireman(or woman)/police officer

  • @DripStopShop
    @DripStopShop 12 лет назад

    try thinking about it like this: instead of going to school and such to make money, we do all that to accomplish something with our lives. a large part of our satisfaction as we get older has to do with what we have to show for the time we've spent alive so far. this is an unavoidable concern we all face which has become a part of our aging process thru evolution. yes, perspective has a lot to do with our happiness, but there ARE certain ways we can limit our highest possible amount of happiness

  • @MumblingMickey
    @MumblingMickey 12 лет назад

    I think you might have missed the point a little... that's not what he meant.
    The discussion revolved around 'perceived' happiness and satisfaction and 'true' happiness and satisfaction. The California thing was just an example. It was meant to be an example of how people estimate what would make them happier and illustrate that regardless of the outcome their perception was erroneous.
    Which obviously without the frame of reference of gaining what they want, it will be.

    No such thing as "false happiness".
    If you watched this video, and agreed, you agreed that goals and achieving such goals are the things that bring about happiness. If one's goal is to obtain things (doesn't have to be sports cars and mansions - think outside of the box) then they would become happy once they achieved that goal.
    So after achieving one goal, then you'd have to desire another goal, and so on.

  • @DynamicUnreal

  • @TheBalfrog

    No, I think a lot of people think "yeah but you need to make money to be happy", because thats what we are raised to believe, "why do i go to school, it doesn't make me happy", "because you can get a better job and earn more money and then be happy". As someone who has taught primary school and secondary school students as an LSA, it is perspective.

  • @CamKnoppMusic

    I think I am much happier overall after moving from Massachusetts to North Carolina. But that is because I get seasonal affective disorder really bad, so it was kinda just a necessity for me to get out of there. I think someone could also be happier if theres something that they love doing and/or an industry they want to be in but their current location doesn’t support it.

  • @DripStopShop

    ok, but some happiness/sadness is uncontrollable. for ex, it's been programmed into us through evolution to have such a strong desire to do something meaningful with our lives that many people experience an escapable depression, or at least slight sadness, at the end of their unproductive lives. i agree that we can choose the light we view our lives in, but without accomplishing long term goals, for instance, there may be a limit to the amount of satisfaction we can have, dont you think?

    no not within them selves but money as an example, gives you the freedom to live your life how you want to live it. and that is certainly something that makes me happy. and money is a great tool for it. it has extrinsic value.

  • @riderlibertas2580
    @riderlibertas2580 12 лет назад

    I'd say such programming is actually very recent in our evolution. Most of our ancestors were chiefly interested in survival. Granted there is always some nature/nurture influence but I hardly believe that kind of thing is undeniable. Basing ones happiness on whatever them deem a productive life is a choice and a judgement that I would not make. The illusion of control we think we have in our lives has taught me to roll with the punches and that being generally happy is a better lifestyle.

    David Kahneman is an author. You could start by checking his books listed on Amazon.
    Once you've found an author, look at the bibliography or references in his books/writings and go from there.
    Amazon's "look inside" functionality may let you see the subject/author index and reference list so that gives you more ideas - see who's work they reference often and chase up their work. Then go to your local library or local university library.

    What I'm saying is that without money, there'd be no efficient way to allocate specialization or division of labor. Everyone would have to farm their own food for themselves, unless the government forced you to give them some of their crop. There'd be no way to afforad a trip to Titan- the people who'd execute the trip would be too busy farming.

    for someone, whose income is low, an increase by 30% would definitely make him happy, because he would be able to buy more products and do more things in his life. Perhaps, this does not apply 100% for people with big income (e.g. 100K USD/year). If someone takes 130K, that won't change a lot, because with 100K, you can alredy do a lot of things. Of course, a lot depends on our habits too.

  • @JTCGiantz56

    Alot of it is indeed involuntary to the person who isn't aware of their current emotional state of happiness and unhappiness. They go through life not really thinking about it. Once you actually take the time to think about and observe your current state of well being can you actually begin to make the changes you need to change your current state of living.

    It is also very hard to live without making any kind of money. There is a difference between those who make money and those who need it to sustain themselves. It can be relatively cheap, maybe a couple hundred dollars, to buy the cheapest available ticket out of your country of birth for a few days or weeks. That could be a life experience that requires little monetary gain.
    Though, you do have a point. It is a lot harder to do this in recent times.

    The only people who say money does not make you happy don't know how to use it properly. The best way to be happy is having life experiences, but try having one without having to pay for it. Directly or indirectly, we've arrived at a place in time where nothing can be done without any kind of monetary investment.

    On a serious note though, his point seems to be, we over exaggerate what makes us happy, and true happiness is meeting goals.
    But the doesn't analyze the goals. If a goal is bad for you, how would that make you happier?
    Becoming head of a criminal gang only to get stuck in jail doesn't sound very fulfilling.
    The goal itself probably matters too.

    Money definitely will make a homeless person happy or if you are lonely and stuck in one place with no social life then it can allow one to travel and truly experience life, go to concerts, more freedom, but if you consume yourself with needing more and more it is a burden. The money/happiness equation is all about a balance. I hate it when people tell me it won't buy happiness, because for me, I know that a certain amount could allow me the opportunity for happiness.

  • @riderlibertas2580
    @riderlibertas2580 12 лет назад

    No I don't. No amount of money, luxurious lifestyle or convivial company can guarantee happiness with any consistency. It has to be a sincere and core decision to over-ride the burdens of every day life but nothing more than making the choice to be happy is required. Most people just haven't yet made a choice and feel they are at the whim of circumstance, and I suppose to an extent they are but we all chose how we react to every situation.

    No. (put simply)
    People would still farm, and people would find far better ways to farm with all of the time freed up to actually do research into creating better food stocks/land/and improving current atmospheric conditions. So food supply's would sharply increase. Also, if money is the ONLY thing that drives you, YOU are worse off then all other beings on this earth. Yes the government would have to step in, but the motivation would be there for people to help society, and not themselves.

    There are three brothers, one says money means nothing more than sustenance to him and he has little to no interest in pursing it. Later in life he doesn't have a lot of money, but that's okay because he never had goals of grand economic status. Then on the flip side, the other two brothers both wanted to amass great fortunes. One did, and he was both happy and satisfied because he attained his goal. The other wealth desiring bro did not achieve his goals, and now he's pissed.

    It might surprise you to know that the countries that have the lowest quality of living have some of the happiest people. This has nothing to do with mental illness. Overall happiness is a choice we all have to make for ourselves.

    My goal is to stay in California.
    Or move to Hawaii. Hell, maybe I should move to Costa Rica, then being unemployed would barely matter.

    Hold on there Kahneman, you say goal setting is important and as evidence of that you say that people who fulfill things they want at 18 and 45 are happier. Couldn't that simply reflect innate desires, that some people innately care more about money/influence/fame for example and thus report caring about it more both at 18 and 45? So it's not necessarily got anything to do with goal-setting just with doing what you want.

    Unless obtaining material things is your one true passion and goal in life. Then it would bring happiness.
