  • Get up close with a Fastback 2001 Mazda MX5/Miata. I was prompted to make this video as when I was purchasing my fastback there was really no information that I could find on that clearly outline the pro's and con's of installing a fastback versus an OEM hardtop. This is my experience of installing and using a fastback for the past 3 years on this vehicle. If you have any other questions, let me know in the comments below!

NB miata fastback owner here. I have the CCP top and if anyone is wondering about it, its the same issue with fitment but does use all the oem hardtop mounting points atleast. Thats just the nature of fiberglass, the molds are never perfect as there is some warp when they cure. Luckly I've worked with fiberglass before so I got the fitment near-perfect after about 2 days on my own.
For waterproofing the windows, I used a thin but hard strip of window seal I got from Home Depot and also used the bolts. Seals nicely.
also reused a new set of oem miata hardtop window seals with some shims to get the seals to push outward a 1/4 more so they sit flush and some caulking(I think it was actually "Liquid Nails" brand) to fill in any remaining gaps.
I used "Foam Weatherstrip Tape" on the underside of the trunk to create a nice seal. If done right, it looks clean too.
As for the seal going around the rear of the passenger area. i used one long piece of pipe-wrap insulation that creates its own tight seal once you bolt the top down.
For the seal at the top of the window frame, I didnt have to do anything special for that as when I was finishing/trimming the top, I made sure that the fitment with the window was flush and tight.
So far I have had zero leaks in 2 years and I have zero wind noise. I even take it through automated car washes every month at least once.
Edit: if anyone is wondering if the car is quieter, yes it is but not by much if you install it as-is. The short version is that you get MUCH less wind noise if you seal it well. The better flow of air around the passenger area also reduces the wind noise coming from the rear.

Please, don't wash your Miata in an automated station!!!! 🙏🙏🙏

@@benedicto.050 yea, it's not good for the paint, but im lazy 😅 but the point I was trying to make was that I reliably have no water leaks even though the machine shoots water at it from different angles and with pressure higher than that of typical rain.

Nice work! What did you do for the boot?

@@RJ-dr8to If you are referring to how I sealed the trunk, I kept the OEM trunk seal on the car side and used "Foam Weatherstrip Tape" on the trunk side from a local Home Depot. Its meant to seal houses but it can withstand extreme hot and cold temperatures and is wind and waterproof. It comes already with an adhesive side and it sticks very strong, perhaps too strong, so you will want to place it right the first time. The foam is very flexible and can compress to almost "flat" so it helps to contour to the curvature of the trunk and the fastback top. After awhile of the foam kept in place with the trunk closed, the foam holds the shape so when you open the trunk, the seal looks like a custom shaped seal. lol.
update: eventually I noticed a leak in the trunk in fall of 2022, however, its not due to the seals. Its because leaves will get stuck in the gap between the fastback top and the trunk. I didnt think it was an issue as it happens with most cars but the leaves will get smashed between the foam seal and the oem seal and leave just enough gap for a small drip. Removing the leaves solves the issue but I recommend adding a seal between the trunk and the top so that leaves wont fall in there any more and eventually fall in your trunk or get stuck between the seals. Overall, 3 years with it on now and so far no real issues have popped up.

I don’t know if they still make them to be honest! There’s a guy in Greece that makes them now or CCP in USA seem to do the best job now!

I love how these 1k sub channels insist to spam a shitty music loop, like none of the big channels do
