It is gratifying to see an MX-5 with the same spec as mine give a good account of itself on this demanding track. This owner’s build is still a sports car, it’s NOT a race car. The result is a comfortable and drama-free excursion of the course at respectable speed. The sports-car marriage of modest power, low weight, first-class shifting, steering, and braking, and a fully adjustable all-alloy suspension, result in a high level of engagement, and therefore maximum driving pleasure. A skilled driver like Moshi demonstrates for us the car’s effortless ability to manage transitions. In addition, the wide powerband and close-ratio 6-speed (no overdrive) means the engine is at the right revs on all parts of the track. The speeds attained by the car around the course are impressive but not scary. The chassis is never overwhelmed, and the driver’s skill is rewarded without the need of a 500 hp engine. Honestly, a GT3 would be wasted on my middling skill level: I’d be too afraid of screwing up to have much fun. But then, I am not a racer. I can drive my ND2 nearly flat-out without apprehension because its modest acceleration gives me time to think ahead and plan for the next corner. Once I get to that corner, I don’t have to stand on the brakes before the apex, and I carry more speed through and out of the corner. There is a tendency for more powerful cars to fall behind mine on a twisty road because they lose so much speed in the corners. If you find an ND2 inadequate for back-road dicing, you might want to ask yourself if your velocity is excessive on an unpredictable public roadway.
