As a straight man I still loved Jimmy' never heard a bad word about him we all wanted to dance like him loved his music loved growing up in the late eighties, the gay lads had a very bad time with aids, bullying, etc, etc, I stopped a gay led getting beaten up and was very proud of myself still friends today they had such a bad time growing up, anto
Brilliant song - dark but important lyrics, the genius of Jimmy, and for once a great showcase for the (now) Reverend Richard Coles and his keyboarding skill. LOVE IT.
On the contrary, I think MANY of the 80´s famous bands and singers were gay: Elton John, George Michael, Kajagoogoo, Village people, Kool and the Gang...
@@neilsarfati3334 well they didnt "deal" with it in the same way as Sommerville. Which was the statement. Listen to the lyrics on the album "Age of consent"
Steve X: I am gay myself and I don't see the lyrics and message of Sommervilles song as only relating to Gay people. I maybe wrong but isn't he just talking bout domestic abuse?Isn't that a pretty universal issues straight or gay?
Jimmy totally had the 80's club dance moves down - and all us straight guys copied him on the dance floor and sang along with his falsetto voice driving in our cars!
DasObscure It's sad how some music can bring back bad memories as well as good, but your free now.Any man that hits a woman is a coward, end of.Love this track, one of my favourites from The Communards
You may break the skin but you can't kill the soul ! What a line. Even though this is to do with relationship break ups I always think of this when I have to deal with knobhead managers !
This song is now 30 years old........ Ouch !! And i still love it as much as i did when i went to Woolies (ask an older person !!) & bought it. The dark lyrics still sound relevant today, nothing I've personally experienced my self thankfully, but i hope this gave song gave abused people the confidence to stand up and say enough is enough, i won't take your shit anymore.
to all men that have been treated that way whether emotional or physical abuse there is good women out there but it will take time to heal I know I've been there myself I wish you the best to get over what you've been through
From the very beginning sounds like the use of the minor keys and you know this track is going to be about something serious. Decades before this issue was being dealt with properly, Jimmy and Richard were there. So ahead of their time. Great track too. Terrific fellas!
a parte de ser un buen tema discotequero, ensalzo esa pedazo de voz, del chaval, buen grupo de los 80 que saco muy buenos temas y este es buenisimo sencillo ,pero con calidad
The first Antony Johnson and Sam Smith! Jimmy was and still is one of the BEST artists to come out of the 80s also one tof the most underrated! WHY? By bronsky beat changed my life forever
I never understood - that dancing is very very accurate. Better than most folk on MDMA Some people said he couldnt dance. I challenge anyone to keep that beat, whilst moving your entire body. x Pride today. Mwwhhaa!!!!
Quel talent quelle voix. On est né avec 2 mois d'intervalle et chacun d'un côté de la Manche. Je rends hommage à cet homme, épris de justice, qui a crié si fort sa "Différence".
Agreed. Always loved the tune, but the lyrics are hard to swallow, especially with such an upbeat and triumphant tone. It kinds of kills the song. I mean, why the hell are you going to wait until TOMORROW to leave an S.O.B. that is abusing you? I think their activism got the better of them. Pity. If it were about cheating, and more tongue in cheek, it would work; but for physical abuse? it should be TODAY as in immediately!!!
i think he was saying most people say "im leaving tomorrow"some abusers wait or just cannot leave today!can you imagine having kids and no money?i think yes its a triumphant tone which perhaps adds to the tone that women or men in that situation should feel triumphant..i dont know it was made in in 1987
thanks I'm getting there now.... but i will never allow another person female, or male to put me through that again.... i think as a man you are conditioned to physical pain which is why emotional pain hurts so much for so long.
Video directed by Peter Christopherson aka Sleazy from Psychic TV and Coil. Would love to know what he and the Reverend Richard Coles talked about. Fabulous tune btw.

The cool priest playing technology that helped me become a composer and music tech nerd. Also, that String Arrangement... BEAUTIFUL.
I could listen to that song endlessly!!!
"You may break the skin but you can't kill the soul, I've had all I can take..." awesome!
I said it before. Jimmy Sommervile has a GREAT GREAT beautiful voice.
Brilliant song - dark but important lyrics, the genius of Jimmy, and for once a great showcase for the (now) Reverend Richard Coles and his keyboarding skill. LOVE IT.
One of the best 80's songs...memories...
Gosh i was in love with this song when it came out in 1987. It still rocks, Brits are world class when it comes to musik
I just love Jimmy's voice and phenomenal dance moves!!!!
What an amazing angelic voice he has.Love this track.
Great song as always 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I was never a fan of Jimmy or any of the bands he was in but this song and ;For a friend; would be in my top 20 songs of all time-Both brilliant
Our vicar Richard is a bit of a brainbox, he was very impressive on University Challenge recently.Obviously a man of many talents.
One of my favorite singers. Cool !!
Not many bands/artists dealt with gay issue's like Jimmy sommerville did in the 80's. All respect to him.
Dorin you seem to know a lot about being gay !

Nice to see gays and straights agreeing about something
im kind of lucky still be able to enjoy any kind of 80's every friday night where few bar/disco playing 80's from 10 am to 4pm!!! whatta great time!
"Jimmy Sommerville" and "Holly Johnson" got da most cool dancemoves .-)
So under rated and Jimmy deserves more credit than he got. I guess he was too much for the music industry at the time!
he enjoyed huge success for several years in all of europe...i would not call him underrated
Can't help thinking of this song when memories of my violent asshole ex flood into my head. Fantastic song either way.
