When I saw the image, My first thought went to the bussard collectors of the discovery, it is very similar, though of course these turrets have 3 size variants. I'm liking many design elements on display.
That phaser is sexy as hell. With respect to tactical holsters, there is a scene in The Cage with Pike's away team gearing up in the transporter room. I recall that they wore some sort of harness with a holster under their jackets.
the small one is the rapid fire phaser that can be used as a cutter as well, the medium hole is the standard phaser, the large one is for creatures that wear armor or thick skin and are somewhat immune to the standard stun setting without the wide burst effecting the person. Really helpful with Klingons, the reptilian Xendi, the Brekar, or any species that is bigger than the standard humanoid as well. The TOS phaser just had this as settings of wide beam [for the races above, or multiple attackers], narrow beam for everything else they got rid of the rapid fire option due to that the phasers output could also be changed when need be.
I hope that they keep consistent with how powerful these weapons are supposed to be. 1:39 I hope that this doesn’t mean that those things on the new nacelles are phasers. They look really similar. 6:53 Stun, kill, disintegrate? 12:36 TNG had holsters even back when Roddenberry was in charge.
I cannot believe it. Something, ONE thing, the ONLY thing I have seen from STD that I like. Kudos to you for bringing it to my attention. It won't make me start watching STD again but it does fall into my #1 federation phaser slot. Knocking the TOS type-2 to 2nd place.
All the ships have been linking almost none to the other ships of the time. I mean they look good and I love them, but they don't fit. then they release the communicator and phaser which to me is literally the perfect design. They mix the cage, and tos while also modernizing it. It makes me feel like they know what they're doing more then they let on in the trailer and when it comes out everything is going to make sense and be explained. If it's not then we'll just have to consider it a reboot and judge it by what it is instead of what we think it should be. Either way it looks like it's going to be great. Now I just want to see the tricorder!!!
updating and modernising is fine an very welcome (like comunicator and phaser) but there was no need to change the color schemes of the uniforms - that is more than visual re-imagining (to my mind)....
+*Blerp Lerp* _"It is a visual re-imagining. They'll be following the lore when it comes_ _to story, but with designs and the such they'll be updating them."_ Which of course means it's NOT actually taking place in the Prime Universe, but now a THIRD universe. Not the original, not JJtrek, but something new. Blah. They should have treated us (and Trek) better.
nakyer I understand that. It definitely seems like a reboot. I would love it if it stuck to TOS asthetic, but being different in no way makes it less Trek. We have to remember that TNG, although prime, was definitely a reboot, at least visually. It is now one of the most popular series. Then DS9 came along and completely changed the basis of he show by setting it on a station. DSC being a little flashier doesn't change nearly as much as DS9 did. If the stories are good, and it sticks true to the spirit of Trek then we have nothing to complain about. Where the JJ movies went wrong isn't being in another universe, or changing the look, or even bad stories(they really aren't). They just weren't trek stories. So at least give discovery a chance until we see it.
I will want to believe it's Prime. A lot of these hand props look like something Feinberg and Co. would've done back in the 60s if they'd had access to 3d printing and the fancier manufacturing techniques we've got today.
Except TNG is an acceptable visual redesign because it takes place 100 years in the future and DS9 took place in an alien station with tons of alien traffic. This show is a mere ten years BEFORE TOS and looks nothing at all like the prime universe. From the ship designs to the uniforms. It's all clearly JJ universe inspired. Even the damn camera shots with the annoying JJ lens flares look like they would fit right in with the JJ films. For them to claim this fits with Roddenberry's Trek is pure bullshit.
This is more like it. Nice blend of the Cage hand-cannon's tripple emitter, the presumably new Type I phaser and and early Type II pistol grip. Fits in nicely with the idea that Pike's ship has been out for a long time and hasn't received the newest updates yet, while Discovery, despite being a (presumably) older ship was refitted/resupplied with newer phasers and communicators, and presumably Tricorders. If they're going to screw up a prop, it'll probably be that, but I'm hoping they go 3 for 3 here. Now if they could just get the prop team to smack the ship design team around a bit...
I see the Phaser Rifle just came out too! Though there are things from Discovery that are different than what I would have liked I really am liking the props they have managed to come up with, nice nods to the old and looking great.
There has been very little that I've liked with the art direction in this new series, but, this new phaser and the new communicator are great. I already want to buy the toys.
You can clearly see lens on the apertures which would be expected in a energy projection weapon. Change lens to change focus for required setting. It is obvious that is what they were doing that with the None Canon Cage phaser and the TOS phaser just changed the focal length (like a micro-scope) to do the same thing with the point.
Totally agree with the Commander about just updating the design, touch screens would even work as the "barcode-scanner" phaser from TMP/TWOK had an almost LCARS touch pad control and it seems to be a totally different design from TOS, assault Phaser and STIII phaser which all look like they are from the same designer.
Macfarlene toys has the license for Discovery and all the other Treks as well. They are releasing a full scale Discovery phaser with lights and sound in the Fall of 2018. I don't know about the communicator though.
They still use the Hand Laser 12 years later in Where No Man Has Gone Before. That is literally about when Phaser Technology got to the hand held stage. They had Phaser rifles and went to Type one Phaser by the very next episodes.
Questions : Are they a "Traditional continuous, collimated Beam Phasers...Or Pulse beam, or pulse bolt--like jj Abramsverse stlye....2nd, Are they capable of disintegration???
Kinda reminds me of the 2230s Phaser which looked like it would also fit between the 2250s Laser and the 2265+ Phaser. This new design feels like an experimental model that fits well in the late 2250s early 2260s. Maybe the Shenzhou is also experimental and the Discovery is an old Ship (maybe 2220s)
I caaaant wait to see the actual bridge of the Discovery!! They said its very different from the Shenzhou, from what we've seen in the trailer! I love what im seeing lately, the new Discovery, the communicators, the phasers.
Nice cross between, I like the three prongs on the front, and the mini phaser on top and the little round switches and the front probably turns good work c.b.s, cadge an tos.
If everything we have seen for Discovery was as nice a blend of Cage, TOS and Enterprise as this and the communicator are we would have a lot less to worry and/or complain about.
The three lenses on the front look a lot like the lenses on a microscope. Perhaps they focus the beam in different ways to get stun, kill and disintegrate etc.
say what you will about discovery, the prop redesigns are fantastic. They still respect the original TOS designs while being updated to a modern aesthetic. wish the ships were done as well as these
Anyone else notice that the phaser barrel looks very similar to the Discovery's (assumedly) bussard collectors, but just upside down? Which makes me wonder if the assumed bussard collectors on the Discovery are really bussard collectors? Might they be phaser cannons?
Same sentiment as the Communicator; doesn't exactly look like it should but at least it looks good! If they'd done that with more of their changes... i'd still complain. But at least it'd look better. I am, however, a little cought off-guard with the three little openings on the front of the phaser. Mostly because they remind me A LOT of the three holes on the front of the Discovery's nacelles. Does the Discovery have Mega Phasers in it's nacelles?
Huh, this looks good. Though I wonder if, during a fight, you're supposed to hand-crank the front focus emitter turret (like they did in the Cage) or if there's a dial that does it for you. I thought the ENT phasers were OK, and the TNG/DS9/VOY phasers went a different direction than the classic TOS ones. -- It's curious that they chose the "backwards" proportions like the TOS phaser, when they could have extended the forward portion a bit, so there would be a front-middle-longer-back look to it. -- This is the first Discovery tech that looks sensible and not generic or overly far-future. (Who could see well with a see-through computer interface?)
I noticed everyone keeps calling The Cage episode pistol a phaser...NOPE! The Cage weapon was a Phased Laser, adv. Laser weapons...The only phasers I was aware of was the Rifle phaser...
Finally something they got right!!! Now was it that hard to make something more TOS like? Now only if they made the uniforms, ships and Klingons more TOS like then it would have been an easier pill to swallow!
The three barrels make me think more of possible firing modes. Like a low-power mode that can do things ranging from stunning people to heating rocks, a standard mode that eventually becomes the 'kill' setting in TOS, and an 'industrial' setting that can do stuff like punch through walls and obliterate people or a 'wide beam' setting for stuff like sweeping whole rooms. The initial trailer worried me, but little details like this are winning me back over and making me curious about Discovery once again.
Compare the "barrely" shape of the 3 emitters to the ENT era phase pistol, they are also a viable progression of that. I have to say I wasn't impressed with most Discovery material, but this, this might be the best thing to come out so far.
The Discovery team should have started with those pics and design pieces first and do the ship reveal in the middle. So the overall hype/opinion is more balanced and noe so low at first and slowly has to rise back now. But they might do a good job overall? Still unsure personally.
In 'The Cage' and in 'Where No Man Has Gone Before,' they use the laser pistol. So Phasers were not used until sometime during Kirk's 5 year mission. Meaning, phasers or phase pistols should not exist before then. I don't see why you're even attempting to compare this with Star Trek canon props, since this is not a Star Trek canon series.
Their prop guy is killing it.
At least some one there is doing something right for this show.
Finally.. something to like in the new series... if the communicator and tricorder are as good I will want a set.
finally!!!!!!!
So we have Stun, Kill, and Hurt Real Bad right?
Stun, Kill, and Medium rare.
The ToS Phaser was ALWAYS the best... Nice job on the Discovery one!
Thanks for posting this video, gentlemen. When it's done playing, I'm checking out your communicator video next.
When I saw the image, My first thought went to the bussard collectors of the discovery, it is very similar, though of course these turrets have 3 size variants. I'm liking many design elements on display.
Ok, I may not like a lot about STD thus far, but the revealed Phaser is cool.
...
My god...
That acronym is going to be the butt of jokes for years once the show comes out, I'm calling it.
Love the new phaser. It's a nice median design.
That phaser is sexy as hell. With respect to tactical holsters, there is a scene in The Cage with Pike's away team gearing up in the transporter room. I recall that they wore some sort of harness with a holster under their jackets.
The one thing I love about Discovery is this. They actually made me happy. Yay. Let's hope they keep it going.
the small one is the rapid fire phaser that can be used as a cutter as well, the medium hole is the standard phaser, the large one is for creatures that wear armor or thick skin and are somewhat immune to the standard stun setting without the wide burst effecting the person. 6:53 Stun, kill, disintegrate?
12:36 TNG had holsters even back when Roddenberry was in charge.
this is probably the first thing I've seen from ST-disco that I genuinely like and can't wait to see
I cannot believe it. Something, ONE thing, the ONLY thing I have seen from STD that I like. Kudos to you for bringing it to my attention. It won't make me start watching STD again but it does fall into my #1 federation phaser slot. Knocking the TOS type-2 to 2nd place.

I LOVE THIS REDO! IT'S BETER THEN THE CRAP FROM THE CAGE. you know the tv tube with a handle.
This is more like it. Nice blend of the Cage hand-cannon's tripple emitter, the presumably new Type I phaser and and early Type II pistol grip.

Cool overall look. This weapon makes all the sense unlike the ship....
This is so freaking beautiful. I agree, I'll have to buy it too and add it to my collection.
I see the Phaser Rifle just came out too! Though there are things from Discovery that are different than what I would have liked I really am liking the props they have managed to come up with, nice nods to the old and looking great.

If only the prop designers were incharge of the entire series...
YES THIS IS THE BEST THEVY'VE DONE SO FAR
Love it. Nice homage to TOS and The Cage. Can't wait to see it work on screen and for the prop replica to come out.

The alternating barrels is different lenses, take a look at images of microscopes and their objective lenses, the same three rotating lenses.
Watcher Zero Therefore higher energy output adjustment or lower energy output.
It reminds me of those old cameras with three lenses that you rotated. That was very interesting that it appears to be based on The Cage pilot one.
11:38...that JJ gun looks like the cheap toy laser guns in a toy shop.
I think that was the cheap as hell Playmates Toy
Kinda reminds me of the 2230s Phaser which looked like it would also fit between the 2250s Laser and the 2265+ Phaser. This new design feels like an experimental model that fits well in the late 2250s early 2260s. Maybe the Shenzhou is also experimental and the Discovery is an old Ship (maybe 2220s)
It looks like some kind of Super 8 camera with the three focusing lenses. Good design. I wish they'd applied this style to the whole show.
I caaaant wait to see the actual bridge of the Discovery!!
They said its very different from the Shenzhou, from what we've seen in the trailer!
I love what im seeing lately, the new Discovery, the communicators, the phasers.
Thanks for this. Would love for you guys to interview the new prop person!
I do have to say that phaser looks pretty awesome!
yeah this is pretty much the first thing that came from STD i like the look of. And surprise surprise is inspired and respectful of the old stuff
Very excited that more of what we are seeing is linking to canon!
Nice cross between, I like the three prongs on the front, and the mini phaser on top and the little round switches and the front probably turns good work c.b.s, cadge an tos.
If everything we have seen for Discovery was as nice a blend of Cage, TOS and Enterprise as this and the communicator are we would have a lot less to worry and/or complain about.
it looks like the older style video camera style lenses where they had to adjust for focal range
my guess is. small is the kill setting, medium is a stun setting, large is area stun
that ST : Discovery hand phaser looks like a Japanese Movie camera my DAD got while in Japan.
I like this and the Communicator! 👍
ok, that looks pretty good and puts the Kelvin Timeline Phaser pew pew pew guns to shame
this is how to do a proper retcon. The communicator was nice too
The three lenses on the front look a lot like the lenses on a microscope. Perhaps they focus the beam in different ways to get stun, kill and disintegrate etc.
I can't help it. The 3-lens front reminds me of an old style movie camera.
First thing I've really liked about Discovery so far
No one has said about the lack of barrel on the phaser, it just stops with no way for the beam to exit the gun.
The phaser barrel looks like the forward end of the nacelles on the discovery
I'd love for you guys to do a video about the movie Forbidden Planet and speculate where in the Star Trek timeline it could possibly take place.
say what you will about discovery, the prop redesigns are fantastic. They still respect the original TOS designs while being updated to a modern aesthetic. wish the ships were done as well as these
As long as it's Cage / TOS era, GOOD ENOUGH, especially when other things look 29th century or non-Star Trek. There is hope!

If so,It would be like the disrupters in Klingon D-7 nacelles.
Stunned, dead, and deader.
:D
"Don't Faze me bro!" LOOOOL Lovin the old-school references! Did the British guy not get it?
the phaser is freaking awesome!!!
The Wand co. told me that they're up to exciting things but wouldn't tell me what. Fingers crossed.
Wow I have disliked almost everything of STD but this is great ! This is the feel the whole show should have classic but up graded.
Then why is the Cage Phasers in use in Where No Man Has Gone Before???? I really like the design.
Love this phaser!
Two words- LENS FLARE!
Looks like an original Phaser with the rotating lenses of an old TV camera on the front
Iiiiiiiiii love it! Awesome!
love love love the Discovery Phasers look
the front part looks like an old 8mm camera that has a lens wheel.
the kelvin pistol looks like they just added parts to a spray gun
Looks like they used the exact same model phaser you guys own and then modded it to give us a new design.
Whoever is making the props must be a star trek fan. :D
Compare the "barrely" shape of the 3 emitters to the ENT era phase pistol, they are also a viable progression of that. I have to say I wasn't impressed with most Discovery material, but this, this might be the best thing to come out so far.
They've done a pretty good job, still can't forgive the transporter room or the discovery itself yet though
The Discovery team should have started with those pics and design pieces first and do the ship reveal in the middle.
So the overall hype/opinion is more balanced and noe so low at first and slowly has to rise back now. But they might do a good job overall? Still unsure personally.
The pistols in "The Cage" were not phasers, they were lasers.
By the thumbnail image, I thought it was an old movie camera.
Looks great!
So ... when do we see the tricorder, I wonder ... :)
So is STD pre-Cage or post-Cage? Or don't we know?
1 year after cage :)
Now this is great!! Hey are you going to do a video for the new Phaser Rifle also?
yes! but it was announced to late to film today :)
If it's like the cage one shouldn't it be a laser? The cage had lasers.
It is a cross between the one in The Gage and TOS!
Woah wait, they're trying now?
props look amazing. the ships, not too sure.
The grip is a tie in with the phasers from Enterprise
The communicator is too much like the TWOK version, and this phaser is...better than what I thought.
Is this the best thing ST Discovery has done? Quite possibly, yes (but I hope not, I want ST Discovery to be a great show).
Can it control your TV?
Very nice video!
"Curse you, now I have to buy another one" lol
Setting 1: Stun
Setting 2: Kill
setting 3: Disrupt....Heat....
Setting 4: lens flare
In 'The Cage' and in 'Where No Man Has Gone Before,' they use the laser pistol. So Phasers were not used until sometime during Kirk's 5 year mission. Meaning, phasers or phase pistols should not exist before then. I don't see why you're even attempting to compare this with Star Trek canon props, since this is not a Star Trek canon series.
This is what the sensor dish should have and the crystal on the phaser so backwards it is.
The first and only thing I like about Discovery so far is this phaser.
I never knew Starfleet had vintage movie projector phasers. The more you know =======*
The nozzles look like fidget spinner bearings. I like the design though.
It's a Super 8 video camera. This is all I can see now.
Needs a 'puree' setting.
Gallen Dugall my blender has a disintegrate setting.
