Those new disruptors look like garage-modded Nerf blasters. I guess the Klingons have perfected lethal foam darts. "Look out! The Romulans have Super Soakers!"
According to one the showrunners . . . there are no "ancient" Klingons in Discovery. The retconned Klingons are just Klingons as re-conceived by the new show.
the blades on the pistol are just silly (i`m being kind) and as for the rifle the front grip looks like would snap your wrist of if you tried to stab or swing upwards. Drop the stupid blades and they wold be ok as a design. Orville looks better and better with each new reveal from STD.
Yes!! Saturday morning Trekyards :D I gotta say, even though it isn't classic trek look, at least the weapons that have been shown thus far are internally consistent.
the magazine like object you refer to on the rifle looks like a fin type radiator like you would find on a small motor. I would say it would have the same function helping to cool the rifle during combat.
The pierce on the end makes me think these are non disrupter weapons that have been modified to be disruptors, sort of like the semi-auto conversions of bolt action rifles.
If those sharp knives at the front grip of the rifle, they seem to be too short to he useful as a bayonet. It looks like if you try to stab someone with it, you won't go very deep before you hit the barrel.
The major issue I have with the rifles are the back part not being more aligned with the top of the end... it creates a more natural sight line, while I know most sights are not completely straight but that is because gravity when shooting a projectile. Energy weapons shouldn't have that much of an issue with that needing to make the adjustments with the sights to correct for that. The idea of a rifle is for longer range, more accuracy, and more impact or damage. A stock helps with that because you brace it against the shoulder to make easier to handle and more balanced over all. Any type of humanoid would always have similar style rifles and pistols because you make what is efficient not what looks good. I don't have many issues with the spikes/blades on the rifle, but on the pistol, they wouldn't work well as a melee weapon because they don't extend further than the end of the pistol.
The only scenario in which physical blades make any sense at all in Star Trek combat is if there are energy dampening fields present. As for the design, it screams hunter more so than warrior to me. 5:35 *Activates wide beam.* See my point? 10:10 Are we still talking about ancient Klingons here? 11:12 Or photon mortars firing small grenades with the impact of nuclear bombs.
Compared to the Dagger, the Armor and the Ship we saw of the klingons, these weapons look a lot more utilitarian. Sure, they have a few unnescessary pointy bits, but klingons always had that on their blades and costumes, so...I could easily see this being a main weapon even in modern day.
The spikes on the disruptor are useless, the rifle ones will hurt you. If you draw a line from the bottom of the grip to the nozzle, the spikes do not come beyond that line.
It's interesting, these two don't really seem to follow the same "ceremonial" style that the rest of it seems to follow. I also find it interesting you guys didn't find these Klingon, whereas you did find the knife Klingon. To me that knife didn't look in the slightest Klingon, whereas these seem to roughly follow the rough, alien industrial look that original Klingons had, albeit updated a little. I'm actually pretty happy with the design with these.
The rifle as a rifle, looks wicked. As a Klingon rifle? Well, I'm not fully on board with the new Klingon look in the first place. So, still feeling out the new Klingon look in general.
Honestly they look terrible under normal lighting, although I'm sure they'll look fine when they inevitably throw out lens flares so bright they obscure everything else on screen anyways. Klingon guns always looked like relatively normal guns because every Klingon except STD and JJ's shitty versions had normal humanoid hands and this garbage would be painfully awkward to use. The spikes are pointless and ugly (not in the right way) the little shroud of spikes on the disruptor rifle barrel look like they'd get in the way of the beam itself, the material looks like cosplay foam, the pistol straight up just looks like a pressure washer head with greeblies and foam added on. Again, and unfortunately I have said this about almost every single piece of equipment or scenery in STD, it does, not, look, like, Trek.
I think we should start a movement to give Star Trek to the combination of JMS of Babylon 5 and Seth McFarland! They would make a perfect team with JMS doing the serious writing and Seth injecting the comedy of TOS!
I like it. The pistol grew on me. Pistol spikes are for a down-ward swipe motion. It's only as stupid as a karate-chop with spikes. I hate the unbelievable fake blue & orange overlays put on every scene way more. When people look blue and orange that just kills it for me.
Hm, personally I think those are an improvement over the old disruptors. I mean Klingons are kinda melee fetishists so those new weapons make a hell of a lot more sense to such a culture who loves to bring knives to a gunfight. So they got ...gunblades now :P Would have been sweeter of they had added a more traditional klingon style though, like that klingon dagger triple blades which spring up from a single bayonet, which would have been my idea on how melee klingong guns should look, for rifles anyway. The handgun is fine as it is and might be more a handguard/weapon defense thing rather than an offensive use, but that's just my impression.
Don't look Klingon in lineage. Does however look like something a Klingon would pick up to use, and have dual function of shooting and punching with it.
ST3 Kruge does. ST6 they take kirk and macoy rather than just killing them. They did it in DS9 also...yes they do, and also dont. Just like they both DO and DONT have purple blood. A stun setting is a must, its just a high stun that hurts haha
I think it is less a rifle more of a sub-machinegun that you can fire from the hip. The angle at back wouldn't be much good for shouldering. More like a Tommy gun than an Ar or m4 rifle.
So, it would appear that the Klingons are being even further fleshed out as a culture by becoming a race of warrior artists, like the Samurai. 'Member how the Klingons love poetry and theater? Well why the hell couldn't they be seriously artistic as well?! Those disruptors look hand-made, maybe even by the warrior who wields it, and I hope there are some truly beautifully crafted disruptors somewhere in the Empire. I'd say that the Klingons represent our passions, whereas the Vulcans represent our reason/logic, and we Humans are taking the middle path, but here's the problem; we Human critters are already on a path of tremendous artistry, as is evident by this very show... And cars. In the coming Resource Based Economy, (which is the economy of Star Trek Earth), people will have so much free time to pursue their passions, especially their art and music, that the world would be awash in color and beauty and music and fun! There would always be something to do or see, no matter what time of the day or night, and if you wanted it to be daylight you could just teleport to where it IS daytime! I'd recommend against it though, 'cuz ya' don't wanna get a sunburn...
Totally love these. Creating that bladed brass knuckles esque thing on the front of the pistol is brilliant, and a bayonet rifle is perfect for the Klingons. It not even that ornate and organic, especially compared to other stuff we've seen.
What a joke. Please guys, stop trying to justify this garbage. were u paid to not trash this show? Stop it already, this is not Star Trek! Just treat this as a long Star Trek movie and forget it and hope they sell the franchise to someone who understands Star Trek.
They look ok but they do not look klingon in fact like the rest of the klingon stuff we have seen they do not even look startrek not in the slightest, the armour is more Necromonger from Riddick and the weapons are more Pedator / Stargate Atlantis Wraith. I really hope for the sake of Star Trek that these are just ancient Klingons
I would love to give this show a try but day after day I am having extreme doubt. So...OK...Discovery is just ten years before Kirk's time, and presumably its within Abrams alt reality timeline. So my question is why do the Klingons look so fracking different. I had no problem with Abram's Klingons but i saw a profile of a Discovery Klingon and the first thought that came to my mind was: Mon-Klingamari. Seriously that was the look they are going for!! Holy Crap! And I agree with fried chicken below what the hell is up with the Giger-esque ships and weapons. A prequel should be a slam dunk for any producer and director with half a brain: Stick to established lore. Stick to established esthetic. Don't be vain, curb your artistic license. Write your stories within the history of the universe. That's should not be hard to do one would think.
Pistol i ok but the rifle is overkill. Lets look at the pistol , its used by humanoid species It was adapted to humanoid anatomy not counting the spikes it looks like any pistol in any ST era or show. Now lets look at the rifle, this is not a humanoid weapon. No stock, if some humanoid allien try to fire it how he will lean this weapon on his shoulder? We are back to 80's ? And now all Klingons will try to shot from the hip Rambo style ?
hgjg. Since theres no recoil the stock is slightly less important, though the point of contact is handy regardless. Another reason for no stock is a klingon may use the same weapon in and out of armor, today theres a challenge in using a weapon both in and out of body armor thats only partly addressed through adjustable stocks.
even in this video all other rifles have stocks. No recoil but you still need stability. Ok we can assume all klingons have targeting system in helmets but lets try to fire this thing without armor. How do you plan to align the rifle sight? This may be alien race and alien rifle but user still have two arms head and eyes on it it limits design possibilities. Check "Stargate SG-1 P90 demonstration" video Jaffa (humanoid) trying to fire accurate using staff weapon , his aiming just looking silly since this weapon dont have stock.
I like the form but I don't like the "knife" part. If you want to have something for hand to hand combat, you want a knife, not something that looks like a bone but a real knife and the hand disruptur has way too small bayonets, it's not working for close combat. The color, the wood part, great. But they failed by going too far.
Great video! I hate the weapons though. They look generic and more akin to a fantasy or magitech look than a futuristic weapon. The spikes are just nonsensical. That's just my opinion.
From the practicality of using the bayonettes, these are useless. If you want the pistol to act as a knife you need the blade to project down from the base of the grip. For the 'rifle' the way you grip it doesn't give any way to stab as you would with a real bayonette. In fact its not really clear how you'd hold that rifle without looking awkward.
I don't like the designs for klingons. Give them to a whole new species, no problem. Again it's not a klingon feeling design. Touching on the klingons not really having a proper rifle prior, my feelings is rifles tend to be longer ranged weapons than pistols, given a choice a klingon would rather be up close and personal in battle than father away where it would feel more like a sneaky sniper in comparison. Pistols would be used till they could get within melee range with a mek'leth, bat'leth or if need be dk tahg.
I like them both with hand gun being my favorite. They do look like video game because they are not real and alien. Exactly same thing could be said about TNG disruptor if you keep in mind that those designs came out in the 80s.
Overall I don't like these disruptor weapons for the Klingons, too generic looking. If it wasn't for the blades on the pistol I can see it being a ascendent/descendant of the NX Enterprise era pistol, the rifle seems like it would be for a species from the unexplored space of the Trek galaxy.
I think the weapons look amazing and aggressive. How I would imagine Klingon weapons to be if I had never seen one before. We are judging these weapons from the view point that they are impractical and difficult to hold. Remember chaps that klingons are huge and at least 6ft 5in! Klingon would look at earth phase pistols and say 'WTF! How do u maul someone to death with that flimsy stick' . The bayonets look great and Klingon children would be trained to use them correctly in the same way we are taught to use cutlery. Plus modern bayonets are only 6in long as they affect range and accuracy. These bayonets are huge! Very very Klingon!
These weapons do not look like functional sidearms. The "stock" on the "rifle" serves no practical purpose. This is yet another example of stupid fantasy weapons designed by someone who has never held a real firearm.
Many of the comments about the futility of the gun spikes are based on human concept of human weaponry... using human battle technique. I am sure, if you gave someone six months to train with these weapons, they would be able to tear some stuff up big time! So, surely Klingons trained from young adulthood know how to wield these weapons properly.
Definitely not as successful as the Federation designs. Looks like HR Giger inspired devices. It would totally look at home on a Predator universe hunter.
But there are no Klingons in STD, just some brand new race that they are confusingly calling "Klingons". So you won't ever see any Klingons using them.
Designs make sense. Look to Earth, how many different weapons manufacturers do we have, each has their own style. Why would the entire Klingon empire that is divided into houses all use just one manufacturer? Most likely each house would have their own production facilities. The Klingon Empire spans planets so you are talking about each house having billions of people. They are not a singular organization like the Federation that would use one manufacturer.
Another make me gag moment....but I know its ok because they are ancient and ceremonial. Totally impractical looking and ugly. Star Trek is not anime or bad fantasy. They could have made them completely different but still practical looking and not a total fantasy piece. The blades are totally impractical but at least it has a possible strap attachment so it's all good. I really can't believe you two are the same guys who ripped the JJ movies to shreds for every difference. Did CBS replace you with clones.
most weapons in star trek are impracticable let me list the reasons thumb trigger/buttons boomerang shaped pistols no sights on the guns be it iron sights to a scope no safety/off switch no way to change the power cell on the field
zeonthefox I didn't say they weren't but they were at least in the realm of possibility these are just idiotic, but hey when CBS licences the rights for a video game they will fit right in.
TNG covered why the races in our galaxy have consistent humanoid characteristics. The oldest race in our galaxy was alone when they invented space travel. They seeded planets all over with their DNA. This shit is already explained. The truly alien things in Star Trek are saved for more interesting and desperate situations, everything else is to show how extreme humans can be in different forms. Klingons are arrogant and brutish looking constantly for war. Romulans are overly paranoid, subversive and secretive. Vulcans represent a world so enveloped by logic it loses certain emotional things. Ferengi are greed. Tellarites are trade and prosperity. This stuff was established and worked on for over 50 years. It should continue as such, for these people to think they have any right to change something to suit their whims is disgraceful and completely disproves the cast and crews claims that they are fans.
TNG's sixth season episode "The Chase" was a one-off episode that tried to explain away the limited special effects they had to work with. The plot point about the seeding of many worlds with humanoid DNA still holds true regarding why so many aliens are bipedal endotherms, even if Klingons look more consistently alien in the new series. This stuff changed so often over 50 years that 'canon' and 'continuity' is a joke. Everything looks different from one version to another. Klingons weren't the only redesign.
Those new disruptors look like garage-modded Nerf blasters. I guess the Klingons have perfected lethal foam darts. "Look out! The Romulans have Super Soakers!"
The notch on the back of the rifle is a bloodwine bottle opener.
Orville looks better and better with each new reveal from STD.

the magazine like object you refer to on the rifle looks like a fin type radiator like you would find on a small motor. I would say it would have the same function helping to cool the rifle during combat.
The notches on the barrels of both weapons look as though they may twist to change setting, just as the starfleet weapons do.
The pierce on the end makes me think these are non disrupter weapons that have been modified to be disruptors, sort of like the semi-auto conversions of bolt action rifles.

5:35 *Activates wide beam.* See my point?
10:10 Are we still talking about ancient Klingons here?
11:12 Or photon mortars firing small grenades with the impact of nuclear bombs.
So the chaos of the Warp has finally affected the Klingons.... I prefer the "old space pirate flintlock" inspiration for Klingon disruptors.
are you kidding?! and I thought the bat'leth was bad! YUCK! BRAF!
Compared to the Dagger, the Armor and the Ship we saw of the klingons, these weapons look a lot more utilitarian. Sure, they have a few unnescessary pointy bits, but klingons always had that on their blades and costumes, so...I could easily see this being a main weapon even in modern day.

It would make sense if those 3 spikes can be shot as well, like stun darts.
The rifle as a rifle, looks wicked. As a Klingon rifle? Well, I'm not fully on board with the new Klingon look in the first place. So, still feeling out the new Klingon look in general.
I wouldn't be surprised if these new Klingon's also have a holy hand grenade.

Yet another example of why these are a completely new group of Klingons.
Don't look Klingon in lineage. Does however look like something a Klingon would pick up to use, and have dual function of shooting and punching with it.
Why would a klingon disrupter need a stun setting?
To subdo prisoners :) Pretty bad design to only have a kill option
power543.mr Saavik, the Klingons dont take prisoners.
ST3 Kruge does. ST6 they take kirk and macoy rather than just killing them. They did it in DS9 also...yes they do, and also dont. Just like they both DO and DONT have purple blood. A stun setting is a must, its just a high stun that hurts haha
The pistol looks like a modified paint gun. While the rifle looks like an alien flamethrower..
I think it is less a rifle more of a sub-machinegun that you can fire from the hip. The angle at back wouldn't be much good for shouldering. More like a Tommy gun than an Ar or m4 rifle.
Is that a bullpup? Where's the trigger group?
Thinking all warriors, same for melee weapons
Klingon disruptors have no stun setting! If they need you alive, they'll just punch you out.
So, it would appear that the Klingons are being even further fleshed out as a culture by becoming a race of warrior artists, like the Samurai. 'Member how the Klingons love poetry and theater? I don't mind the pistol, but the rifle looks impractical.
OMG! Gears of War weapons in Trek! Uhhhh...Weird.
I don't see Klingons using stun. Ever. If they have a non-lethal setting, it'd probably still wound the target painfully.
Totally love these. Creating that bladed brass knuckles esque thing on the front of the pistol is brilliant, and a bayonet rifle is perfect for the Klingons. It not even that ornate and organic, especially compared to other stuff we've seen.
These really don't seem to follow the in universe klingons we're getting. This seems half way there. I bet they'll look a lot better in the show.
Pistol looks like it should be connected to a petrol pump.
What a joke. Please guys, stop trying to justify this garbage. were u paid to not trash this show? Stop it already, this is not Star Trek!
Just treat this as a long Star Trek movie and forget it and hope they sell the franchise to someone who understands Star Trek.
A little bit of dry-brushing going on with these.

the pistol/rifle is something im glad that they updating though the more generic look gives me a few visual issues so Im hoping for the best
these Klingon are ill

I get a B5 kind of feeling.

I'm not sure what I think. The style seems off, but having bayonets seems very Klingon.
These weapons do not look like functional sidearms. The "stock" on the "rifle" serves no practical purpose. This is yet another example of stupid fantasy weapons designed by someone who has never held a real firearm.

Looks like the organic chicken-bone guns from eXistence. Hate them. Nothing klingon about them.
Commander Rotal That will change when we see Klingons using them, I guess.
But there are no Klingons in STD, just some brand new race that they are confusingly calling "Klingons". So you won't ever see any Klingons using them.
Once again this looks like Warhammer 40K designs - absurdly over ornate and over sized.
Gallen Dugall I guess this particular Klingon House enjoys ornate weapons.
Marketing demographic survey generated show design.
But will their guns be flashlights and their armor cardboard?
#NotMyTrek
This is horrible,
It's like Klingons by Geiger
Vile
those are not klingon distributors.
Jesus H Christ and I thought the Birds of Prey looked stupid. Who the hell's runing this crap...Kathleen Kennedy?
WTF are these?!?

Unpopular opinion: These are the real Klingons. Everything else is just cosplay. Lets make aliens alien again.
