I really hope you guys keep making videos for a long time to come. These videos absolutely captivate me for some reason. You're doing some really amazing stuff over there.
I've been watching hundreds of these guitar/gear related videos over the last coupla years. This is the first one to mention Pavement, which is one of my reference tones. I love you for that. I've bought several pedals trying to get the Slanted and Enchanted tone, but I've never gotten close. I guess maybe it's mainly because I play a Tele. Anyway, I love Brighten The Corners. My fave is Starlings Of The Slipstream.
So refreshing to actually hear someone who is PROUD of his or her creations! I for one find it hard to find better sounding or more intelligently built effects than from J.H.S. Two quick examples : the Unicorn? It's a Uni-Vibe it has a tap tempo button that's smart! Or the Alpine reverb with a built in effects loop so the tones can be forever different! Not the same old thing! Thank you Josh, you are a very gifted builder/designer and teacher!
I first heard of JHS pedals from the early days of "That Pedal Show" (they leaned pretty heavily on the Angry Charlie for a while). Sadly, I do not own any JHS pedals...yet. The "Loud is More Good" t-shirt has the best clean tone of any shirt I own, but in dirty mode it's a little harsh.
I first heard about JHS via a non-music related websearch for the Pink Panther. "My, that's an expensive pedal," I thought. I liked its looks, but I already had quite a few delays, so I didn't feel the true need for it. Still, it caught my eye, so I started doing a little research and discovered youtube reviews of it and other JHS pedals. My first JHS product was an Electro-Harmonix Soul Food with the Meat & 3 mod. That opened my eyes! Flash forward two years and I now have a Pulp 'N Peel, Muffuletta, Kilt V2 w/Red Remote, @+, Calhoun V2 and a Colour Box. Lots of toys to manipulate drive and tone! I guess if I were to get another JHS pedal it would be the Emperor (and then perhaps a Kodiak!)
The first JHS pedal I owned was the Angry Charlie V3. The instant I plugged it in and played, I was blown away. I just couldn't stop playing it because I was in disbelief at how good it sounded. The other JHS pedal I own is the Charlie Brown V4. I use it as my main overdrive tone in effects loop of my Bugera V22 Infinium (which has mild breakup). I have the pedal set up with the gain is pretty much maxed to achieve a JMP type tone rather than the JTM tone that the pedal was intended to create. I was skeptical of JHS pedals at first because of the cost, but the quality of the product backs up the purchase. I will definitely be buying more JHS pedals in the future.
The emperor is a really great pedal but I also recommend the Keeley seafoam chorus/vibrato. It's absolutely amazing. Small and packs a chorusy punch. Also has a setting in the inside to help with bass (setting also sounds beautiful with guitar) I highly recommend it
"Flangers and reverbs compression and chorus. Univibes, overdrives, they never bore us. For these I think you should have won some medals. These are a few of my favorite pedals!" Take THAT, Julie Andrews!
You know what I do wish Weezer had stayed there... Gonna give this a listen right now! My fav JHS is the original large Panther (and every iteration after it has ruled).
your presentation, is a testament to your ability as an educator /sales person , now I want a hole bunch of your creations that go to a place that I really like.
My favorite JHS pedal is the Double Barrel. It is my "always on" pedal when I'm playing my strat. The Morning Glory side establishes my base Strat tone and the moonshine allows it to cut through the mix when needed and stacked it makes a strat scream.
Brighten the Corners is one of the best albums from that era. My friend brought it over on vinyl in like 2002 and it never left my turntable. Still on regular rotation in my playlist.
I am very grateful for you guys putting out amazing content that showcases your passion for all kinds of pedals, and creating your own that you're proud of from that love! Your love of pedals is the center of it all, and your choice in showcasing other great pedals is one of the main reasons I have no issue whatsoever paying hard earned money for the ones you make! It's the embrace of community that makes it feel great to buy a JHS pedal, aside from Josh's extensive knowledge in the subject.. you just know he's going to do a good job designing one! Thanks for making awesome stuff guys, I'm loving my incredible Bonsai and modded older pedals. I can't wait to add a Morning Glory amongst several others to the board.
Oh buddy - waaaay back when (early 2000s) I think I discovered you on thegearpage and mailed in a Boss DS-1 which you modded into a Synth Drive. Crazy pedal, and the first one I’d ever had modded. It took me places I’ve never been - Canada, Rhodes Island, Dave & Busters. Since then I’ve bought the Morning Glory, Charlie Brown, Pulp n Peel, and Mini Foot Fuzz.
JOSH! I'm going to listen to that album right now! I love how the vinyl has a different mix than the digital version and gosh Josh this just made me love you so much more! YOU ROCK!!!
The Twin Twelve is exactly, EXACTLY what I've been looking for - and I find out that people hated it and it's discontinued. Ah, well, looks like Japan has a bunch (inflated price but, at least I'll get one). Sorry your crazier ideas sometimes don't catch on - I love 'em.
Josh, one of the things I love about your videos is that you aren't always promoting. It really shows your sincere appreciation of other pedals, and other manufacturers. Having said that, I would love to hear you talk more about your pedals. There's obviously some sort of balance, if every video is you talking up your pedals then your channel is less interesting because it's just another corporate account. Don't talk about your pedals enough and you're failing to promote the brand that puts bread on your table. Strike the balance you think is right, and I'll keep watching.
Angry Charlie was the first pedal that blew my mind. Give it some love on an episode. You need a singer. The Crayon is definitely on my list of next buys based on this video. You remind me I of my friend Eric who passed away. So in a weird way it is comforting. He was an architect and awesome bass player. Thanks.
Josh, I avoided your pedals for years, as I got you mixed up with another JHS, John Hornby Skewes, which is a low budget guitar brand from the UK. My muffuletta is a constant on my pedal board. The crayon or angry driver may be my next JHS pedal
Whatever y'all do to the black levels and contrast in color correction is rad as hell and makes these videos stand out so much from other channels. Reminds me of shooting ProFlat with my T2i back in film school. Keep it up!
I only have older Boss JHS modified pedals but they are the best! a DD3, GE-7, two CS-3's and the best of all the JHS (mod/fix) for the TR-2. I use all of them all the time. I want some of your new pedals but my wife can never find out! Shush!
Brighten The Corners served as my introduction to Pavement, solely because when a friend recommended I give the band a listen, that was the only album of theirs that they had at the library. Seeing as how these days I still worship at the altar of Malkmus and have now collected their entire recorded output (as well as Steve's and Spiral's solo work), I'd say it made a good first impression.
Rewatching this one again. I think the JHS pedal videos are the best because we learn about the old or existing pedals that inspire you (history of rock, electronics, etc). Then we get Yer thought process as a player , G.A.S.er , and Electronician. And we get to explore the actual JHS pedal. Definitely JHS pedal vids have the widest range of material. Plus: great material (music) as per usual. Would love to here some Brighten the Corners era lyrics on Josh's great instrumental jams.
Great tones...my personal fave pedal and THE pedal that sold me on JHS..the Superbolt. It will never leave my board ever..set the knobs to noon..flip the switch up...go!
Bomb House Recording its a really good pedal. Although V2 for me. It’s definitely a keeper. I love the Angry Charlie all of them. And they’re all very angry for some reason. Not sure why. Almost forgot the Ruby Red. That’s another great one.
Jack Robb just so happens the Ruby Red is on my main board too! I would love JHS to add a “Mid Eq Knob” on the Superbolt..sometimes I just want to scoop it down a few dbs
Bomb House Recording I took mine out and was using it all day because of you. It is a great pedal. Yea it has just the tone knob. Maybe V3 will have the mid knob.
This channel and your great info is where I first heard of JHS. I am actively shopping for your products to support you as a result. Probably going to get one of these or the Colour Box. Great work. Pavement is amazing. Slanted and Enchanted forever.
Great video, mate. Good content and good tunes. Especially the first and last songs. 11:06 eagle eye cherry vibes on that intro, or am I just nostalgic? My favorite is the morning glory. Never left the board. The first I owned was a Charlie brown that got stolen awhile back. Cheers
I played my first JHS pedals in ‘09. I picked up a MFF, a custom color MG, a custom 808, a Pink Panther, an All American, and a Banana Boost. Needless to say...I was in love and still am!!! I sold the Pink Panther..like an idiot. But I still own the MG, 808, BB, and AA. I love them and they still hit my board to this day!! I’ve owned a ton of other JHS pedals since then and just ordered a f ew more yesterday. Love love love this builder and have been a happy artist since 2009!
I'll add that I've owned the following at other points: Colour Box, Twin Twelve, Panther, Unicorn, and have the Kodiak and Emperor en route to my studio right now! Oh...I should add that I have a couple loopers as well ;-) THANKS!!
These three need to just start coming out with instrumental albums. Every jam from the channel is really tasteful. I think Josh is one of the most creative guitarists.
I'm popping my RUclips commenting cherry here! Absolutely Loving the JHS tones from over here in the UK. Can't wait to get a JHS Pedal of my own to add to my pedalboard.
Haha this comment needs more love! Charlie Brown, Pulp'n Peel, Morning Glory, Foot Fuzz, and the Unicorn all sound like substances that could cause you to trip balls. I think people are being biased due to your name. Cheers!
I would still love to see a vid on the clean blend knob for all it's uses on drive, modulation, and compression... also would love to see some more bass because of blending the clean
I love my Kodiak tremolo and JHS buffer. But I need about twelve more JHS pedals now. Also Brighten The Corners rocks! Also love Malkmus solo record with the Jicks "Real Emotional Trash." Tons of gnarly fuzz guitar on that whole record.
Josh, your pedals are so great you can start every your video with a phrase like 'Freaking buy my pedals now!' and we still will love you, your pedals and your videos.
Just bought my first JHS pedal, Tidewater, at Andertons on holiday two weeks ago, supporting my favorite RUclips channels. Love it. I’ve played it with a TS and lots of reverb and it sounds great. Also with a Phase 90. Have a bid in for Muffaletta so we’ll see what happens this weekend. Maybe an Angry Charlie and a Cub too. Haven’t bought a pedal in 15 years but after breaking my foot 12 weeks ago I’ve bought 8 after binge watching RUclips.
Brighten the Corners was one of those perfect albums at the perfect time for me. I saw them (on that tour perhaps) and Mogwai opened. I had never heard of Mogwai, but they snuck up onstage and then ten minutes later you realized you’d been listening to the opener play an amazing song full of blinding psychedelia. Then they all casually switched back to their original instruments and played the rest of their set their set. I was awestruck. I went strait to the merch table and bought the record. I will never be the same.
My favorite JHS Pedal is my first JHS Pedal, which is the clover and currently in the mail on it's way to me! This channel has probably resulted in more impulse purchases of pedals and albums for me than I care to reveal!
I'm really glad you've done this video. Your commitment to being an educator first and a salesman second is definitely appreciated, but there are just so many pedals these days, and I'd really like to know more about yours, since you seem like a cool guy who loves what he does.
i have one too, but it is all original (outside of being properly grounded so i don't kill myself with it!) and i love it. it is that killer early 60's garageband sound and the trem is pretty good. the reverb is crap on it, but enough reverb pedals and tanks out there to cover that.
Because of you guys and Thatpedalshow I'm now building my own little pedals..... Thank you for pushing me into the rabbit hole :D (I'll still get me a kodiak and an emperor, can't believe the amount of options they offer
Since I started binging this channel I find myself playing the weirdest stuff of my entire life, getting waaaay more experimental with my pedals and loops. I thank you guys!
I am a beginner level guitarist. Not afraid of used gear and will often try returned stuff from online retailers. Tried a Muffuletta and really liked it, but there was a noise that shouldn’t have been there so I returned it. I kept the other brand octave fuzz I tried, and will buy a new Muffuletta soon. The videos you do online are a good way for us to get to know who makes these things and why-even when you talk about other brands most of the time. Builds up support for your own products. Thanks.
Long time follower, first time commenting. I got the Morning Glory for my birthday recently and it has been the best gift I’ve ever received. Even greater than THE GIFT OF LIFE! Nah, seriously… it’s a really swell pedal. Looking forward to buying more pedals and commenting on more videos.
I hadn't really heard of JHS pedals until you started this channel. Really enjoy your vids, they are entertaining, educational and your music jams are first class. Greetings from England!
I don't really remember where I heard about JHS pedals first, but once I found out that you're literally two and a half hours from me, I figured I probably needed to support a, "local," pedal maker. I followed your stuff for about 2 years before you released the Steak and Eggs with Keeley. That got announced and I knew I needed it. I sold off every pedal I had at the time, other than my DD-7, Crybaby, Ernie Ball Volume pedal, and Fender PT100, (I had 5 others on my board at the time and an RC-50) to get the Steak and Eggs. Since then I've added a Prestige as an always on and a Muffuletta for some some fuzz, (all the fuzz!) None of your other pedals have made it onto the board yet, but they are the ones I use to add the most flavor. May 17th will be my 3rd anniversary as a JHS owner/player, and I couldn't be happier with them
The Colour Box is for sure my favourite. It to me is one of the most unique pedals ever designed. Such an amazing concept! And what a sound it can make! I will get one someday!
You've been fair about other manufacturers. It's your time.

I will definitely be buying more JHS pedals in the future.
i'm a drummer and I love LOVE this channel, I learn so much, nice work!
Got an Emperor recently and I fell in love. The end all Chorus/vibrato for me! Incredible tone, no noise, great build quality.
Colin Clay I just got one this week! Such a great sound!
The emperor is a really great pedal but I also recommend the Keeley seafoam chorus/vibrato. It's absolutely amazing. Small and packs a chorusy punch. Also has a setting in the inside to help with bass (setting also sounds beautiful with guitar) I highly recommend it
I agree I use it instead of the CE-2 for several reasons
This is my favorite JHS video yet!!! Great job 👍
YOU ROCK!!!
Also my boyfriend loves his mini foot fuzzzzzzz
The Twin Twelve is exactly, EXACTLY what I've been looking for - and I find out that people hated it and it's discontinued. Ah, well, looks like Japan has a bunch (inflated price but, at least I'll get one). Sorry your crazier ideas sometimes don't catch on - I love 'em.
Josh, it is so great to hear you talk and play a bit about your own pedals. Keep up the amazing work!
You have great sounds and songs. Why don't you do an album using only jhs pedals?
Josh, one of the things I love about your videos is that you aren't always promoting. It really shows your sincere appreciation of other pedals, and other manufacturers. Having said that, I would love to hear you talk more about your pedals. There's obviously some sort of balance, if every video is you talking up your pedals then your channel is less interesting because it's just another corporate account. Don't talk about your pedals enough and you're failing to promote the brand that puts bread on your table. Strike the balance you think is right, and I'll keep watching.
I'm Already In My Room may be Sonic Youth inspired but I'm definitely getting a Yo La Tengo vibe.
Seeing as how these days I still worship at the altar of Malkmus and have now collected their entire recorded output (as well as Steve's and Spiral's solo work), I'd say it made a good first impression.
was looking forward for this the hole day!

Bomb House Recording I took mine out and was using it all
day because of you.
Oh...I should add that I have a couple loopers as well ;-) THANKS!!
this is the only way everyone else at JHS could get Josh to advertise his own product
The first pedal was The Emperor V2! my favourite pedal of all time. Mixed with a strat and a blues junior it sounds so good, Josh you are a master ...
Wowee Zowee is my favorite Pavement record, but I love Brighten the Corners, too. Any Pavement is good Pavement!
Great video!
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain!!!!!
These three need to just start coming out with instrumental albums.
Every jam from the channel is really tasteful. I think Josh is one of the most creative guitarists.
“JHS pedals suck” said the sign in the background. Funny! I love these videos, thanks guys!
Primis Sucks?
Primus sucks !
I'm popping my RUclips commenting cherry here! Absolutely Loving the JHS tones from over here in the UK. Can't wait to get a JHS Pedal of my own to add to my pedalboard.
Why does the name of every pedal sound like a different kind of acid?
Haha this comment needs more love! Charlie Brown, Pulp'n Peel, Morning Glory, Foot Fuzz, and the Unicorn all sound like substances that could cause you to trip balls. I think people are being biased due to your name. Cheers!
Michael Tyler - Yeah, it’s a joke. I play an Epiphone.
RickyBobby lmao
Actually you can trip your fucking balls on morning glory seeds so...
Doing the demo within the context of a band / track is so unbelievably useful
I would still love to see a vid on the clean blend knob for all it's uses on drive, modulation, and compression... also would love to see some more bass because of blending the clean
8:00 one of those moments when the groove is just right. Impressive.
I’m going to snag a Morning Glory to see if it jives with my rig. Thanks for talking more about JHS and what it’s all about. I like your approach.
It's a fabulous pedal.
5 years after the video drops... Pavement is OUTSTANDING!! Belated thanks for the tip, Josh. Also a bit of a Cake vibe to the music.
Hi!
Could you make a video about spotting fake pedals or how to locate the year of a pedal?
Just bought my first JHS pedal, Tidewater, at Andertons on holiday two weeks ago, supporting my favorite RUclips channels. Love it. I’ve played it with a TS and lots of reverb and it sounds great. Also with a Phase 90. Have a bid in for Muffaletta so we’ll see what happens this weekend. Maybe an Angry Charlie and a Cub too. Haven’t bought a pedal in 15 years but after breaking my foot 12 weeks ago I’ve bought 8 after binge watching RUclips.
I bought the Charlie Brown just to own a JHS pedal ')
Brighten the Corners was one of those perfect albums at the perfect time for me. I saw them (on that tour perhaps) and Mogwai opened. I had never heard of Mogwai, but they snuck up onstage and then ten minutes later you realized you’d been listening to the opener play an amazing song full of blinding psychedelia. Then they all casually switched back to their original instruments and played the rest of their set their set. I was awestruck. I went strait to the merch table and bought the record. I will never be the same.
I just got let go at my job and I literally was listening to Pavement on the way home
Jason Goodwin man sorry to hear. Pray you find an even better job soon!
I'd like, but losing your job sucks and don't want to appear to be liking that.
My favorite JHS Pedal is my first JHS Pedal, which is the clover and currently in the mail on it's way to me! This channel has probably resulted in more impulse purchases of pedals and albums for me than I care to reveal!
I have the same feeling you did about compression... so i might just go out and by a pulp and peel! By the way, the first track was great!
I'm really glad you've done this video. Your commitment to being an educator first and a salesman second is definitely appreciated, but there are just so many pedals these days, and I'd really like to know more about yours, since you seem like a cool guy who loves what he does.
I've got a 1484 that's been updated (better made cab and a real reverb tank) it's killer! Still a bit of a sleeper.
i have one too, but it is all original (outside of being properly grounded so i don't kill myself with it!) and i love it. it is that killer early 60's garageband sound and the trem is pretty good. the reverb is crap on it, but enough reverb pedals and tanks out there to cover that.
Gave my away in the great scale down of 2015...other victims were a 1966 Super, Cox Tweed Twin, and 1967 Band Master with the tone rings cabinet.
Great to hear Josh play and get a feel for what he's trying to achieve with his own pedals. Not at all surprised that Josh is a Sonic Youth fan....
Thank you for introducing me to that Pavement album. It is really rather good.
Because of you guys and Thatpedalshow I'm now building my own little pedals..... Thank you for pushing me into the rabbit hole :D (I'll still get me a kodiak and an emperor, can't believe the amount of options they offer
That Crayon sounds phenomenal
Since I started binging this channel I find myself playing the weirdest stuff of my entire life, getting waaaay more experimental with my pedals and loops. I thank you guys!
The Morning Glory into the Crayon kinda made me go crazy... Wow...
Thanks.
easily the best songs you've put on youtube so far. waiting for the album. 😉
Thank you and happy birthday!
i would like to see some bass pedals demo cheers guys
I hadn't really heard of JHS pedals until you started this channel. Really enjoy your vids, they are entertaining, educational and your music jams are first class. Greetings from England!
Can’t wait to pick one up :)
May 17th will be my 3rd anniversary as a JHS owner/player, and I couldn't be happier with them
I've got the Angry Driver, Bonsai, and Muffuletta. I really want the Kirkland special.
You make my Fridays. Every friday I look forward to these videos and they always deliver. Thank you so much and keep up the good work.
Mr. JHS got sum ch0ps... JHS about JHS? we're at the nexus of the universe!
The Colour Box is for sure my favourite. It to me is one of the most unique pedals ever designed. Such an amazing concept! And what a sound it can make! I will get one someday!
