I just texted you yesterday to help me decide between the Tamron and Sigma and here you are posting an video on the same and saving lives. Keep up the good work!
I bought the Tamron over the holidays this year and have been using it to photograph my son’s volleyball games. So far, the lens is super sharp and is able to freeze the action perfectly with the right shutter speeds. The zoom length is good for this distance too. Can’t wait to use this outdoors when it gets warmer. Thanks for the videos!
ohh nice one! thanks for the use case, I'm guessing these games happen outdoors in the sun? Or would indoor lights be bright enough to use fast shutter speeds too?
Hi jimmy. I was just hesitating between the Tamron and the Sigma 18/50 f2.8, and your video has answered me perfectly that I am more interested in the Tamron. Great photos and very nice videos. I like the editing you do to the photos. Regards.
Very insightful video, Jimmy! I liked hearing why you chose the Tamron over some of the other lenses. You named some reasons I probably wouldn't have considered as quickly! I've been impressed with the Tamron lens ever since I've been following your videos and I will definitely bear that lens in mind for when the time comes for me to upgrade my camera gear :) And I also liked how you included a thumbnail of each of your past videos that you took clips from! I am sure that the people who haven't seen those videos yet (which they really should!) appreciate it.

I also chose between these three lenses, and reasoned similarly: The Sony 16-55 didn't make much sense to go for due to its price. I could've gone for the Sigma 18-50, which also has a lower minimum focal distance, which I could take use of. However, I don't mind the extra weight and price of the Tamron, if it means that I'll get that extra focal range. It also does close-ups well, and the stabilization is great for handheld photos and videos, which I do a lot of. @@JimmyShixin I heard from some pros that it boils down to the quality. 🙃 The build quality of the Sony lens is definitely superior, and the image it produced probably packs that extra punch. And I personally wouldn't mind 16-55, as I think that extra mm on the wide end is about equivalent to the additional 15mm telephoto that the Tamron offers. But then, the Sony lens has no stabilization with APS-C cameras, from what I can tell, and the minimum focus distance isn't nearly as good as the Tamron or Sigma. These are important aspects of an all-around lens for me. But of course, the price of the Sony lens makes it a no-brainer to not buy for most of us. 😂
I'm currently switching from my Canon DSLR to the Sony E System as my main camera. equally versatile and convenient, BUT limited bokeh and low light performance because of F2.8 + APSC. if I want to take real nice cinematic footage I use my prime lenses + gimbal
Years back I bought the A6000 used and I am now returning to the hobby. I currently have the Sony 3.5-5.6 18/55 lens that I use to take pictures of my friends and pieces of technology like steam engines. A few questions: 1. My used lens is not the standard kit lens, but I can't really find where it fits in. It seems to be made of metal and of decent quality. What is the general consensus on this lens and would this Tamron be sharper and work better in low light situations? It looks pretty banged up from the outside but I think the lens itself is still good (maybe a bit greasy). 2. Currently I am disappointed with the low light performance of the camera. I understand newer cameras can handle higher ISO values. If I spend a good chunk of money on this new lens, would I be able to use it on a newer camera later on or is the Sony a6x00 series expected to be discontinued? 3. As this lens is quite big/long, would it be better to upgrade to a used full frame camera with kit lens in terms of portability?
Hey hey! thanks for the Qs, pls see my answers below: 1. Comparing 18-55 F3.5-5.6 vd Tamron 17-70 F2.8 Sharpness I'm not sure as I don't pay much attention to it but low light will definitely be better for Tamron given its power aperture. You also get to zoom to 70mm and get more bokeh in your photos due to the lower min. aperture 2. Using the lens on newer cameras The sony a6700 just came out and will be a solid APSC options for years to come (I'm still on a6500 and will upgrade to 6700 soon). You can also use these APSC lenses on full frame cameras (it's not ideal as youre not utilizing the full sensor but still possible). 3. In my opinion, APSC + good zoom is much better than FF + kit lens. Generally I don't really like kit lenses at all and given the fact that lenses are more important than the body in many cases I'd defo say that APSC + a solid zoom is a much better option Feel free to check out the affiliate links in the description for the Tamron lens if the answers were helpful (if you use them it support the channel without extra cost to you)
The metal 18-55 was one of the first e-mount lenses. Consensus seems that almost every other lens will be better 😀 The a6000 is very lightweight, the 17-70 might be heavy to handle on it.
Hey! I always love your content and that's way good 😊. I've a question About this lens can I use this lens with sony zv e10 and is it good in very low light? Ammm... Approx in 25% light condition.
Thank for this video dude, i needed something like this to secure my purchase, definitly the zoom plus is something to have in consideration. maybe its true that sigma has a little better sharpness but meh, it will depends of who is watching and where Thank for your content , keep doing it!
Jimmy, I've been enjoying your content lately and this video of yours solidified the decision to get the Tamron on my Sony a6000, paired with the Samyang 12mm F2.0 manual for landscapes / astro and possibly the Sigma 56mm F1.4 for portrait / candid night street photography. Whilst the Sigma 18-50mm is a good choice, having the extra 20mm and stabilisation with the Tamron effectively future-proofs your camera lens if you decide to delve deeper in your photo journey, saving more time and money for that next lens you may need. Would you recommend taking the Sigma 56m F1.4 for purely travel as well as the Tamron + Samyang, or is the third lens a but too much for you?
Thanks Anthony! really appreciate it and congrats on the new lens! While travelling I tend to actually bring my Sigma 30 F1.4 as a third lens if I do bring it, and the 56mm would be in 4th place in my personal ranking. This is mainly because I found the 30mm just a little bit more flexible because it's slightly more zoomed out - sometimes the 56 (85mm full frame equivalent) is a bit too zoomed in for me to meaningfully show my environment / add context to the photo. Having said that, both are solid to bring as an additional lens as they provide amazing nighttime capabilities
Hi Jimmy, do you think this lens could be an option for portrait photography? I mean, could you get some nice background blur when you zoom in? I want to have one lens for portrait and landscape photography and not worry about carrying multiple lenses with me.

thanks! I personally haven't. I've seen the same videos that say it's sharper which may be true.. But like I say in the vid: I'd rather have the extra 20 or so mm and IBIS (especially important for you on a6300)
I love this video, the decision process you made was the exact same as me, although I was considering the 18-135 too. I wanted a lens that I could take backpacking with me around the world but also use in pretty much any scenario so I chose the Tamron So far it's been great, I only got it at Christmas and have been in Budapest on holiday and took some cool pics, although I'm finding most of my shots are definitely at the higher end of the zoom range, maybe this means my next lens should be a 70-200. I also hope to get into portrait photography too someday
thanks for sharing man! I had the same and kept itching to zoom in more which is why I got myself the tamron 70-300 (did a vid on this one a while back) which I'm super happy with considering its price
@@JimmyShixin think the Tamron 70-200 2.8 is actually pretty affordable especially used. Or maybe I'm thinking of the 70-180. It gets pretty confusing 😅
How do you like the 17-70 combo with the Samyang? I have the Tamron for my Fuji and the Viltrox 13mm 1.4 and am wondering if that will be good combo for my upcoming Europe trip (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, etc) Also have a 10-24 F4 but figured the 13 would be better to have at least one low light lens.
good question! It depends on what you will use the wide angle lens for. Personally if I'm vlogging or taking architecture photos w the samyang 12mm I don't need to zoom. You need to decide if the 10-24 zoom range is more useful to you or if the lower aperture on the 13mm is more useful. I take a lot of photos of churches when travelling and it can be quite dark so I would personally choose the lower aperture lens
@@JimmyShixin thanks for the answer. That’s kind of what I’m thinking. The 10-24 is great for well lit scenarios like landscapes and what not but indoors it starts to suffer. Never been to Europe, so trying to be prepared 😂. Your videos have really been helpful and fun to watch, thanks!
Cool video. So what do u recommend for me as a cyclist taking nature & sport shots, this 1770 or the Tamaron 18-300 ? I am carrying the camera with a strap on my back while cycling!
Hmm thats a good question - the tamron 18-300 has less wide aperture but assuming you do these daytime activities maybe that's fine. The extra reach will be super nice for sure and 18-300 means you never have to change your lens. For me personally the tamron 17-70 + tamron 70-300 combo made the most sense (see my NYC vids) but if you do lots of sporty activities with little time to swap lenses maybe the 18-300 would be a good choice? (note I haven't used the 18-300 yet)
How do you get events? I've been DMing on instagram and haven't gotten anything from it. I have leveraged my network and gotten some gigs that way. This is just a side gig for me and not something I need to make a lot of money from lol. Just wondering how you've gotten events?
It’s different for everyone obvs but for me it was a mixture of doing things for cheap / free initially and just super aggressive networking lol - I got my start doing uni events which are easy as I knew students running club nights or societies that had events planned Outside of uni it becomes tricker and really just revolves around networking all the time and making sure you’re the first person people think of when they need a camera person at an event
@@JimmyShixin One of my instagram DMs came through! I shot an event yesterday haha. It would have been easier while still in college but I with just street photography I managed to peak some interest! If you want I can send you a link when it’s ready, no big deal if you don’t. It wasn’t paid but made quite a few contacts basically doing what you said above!
Well it depends on what kind of photo you want to take, the 70-180 is more zoomed in so if you often take photos indoor it won't be right for you. If you do lots of landscape / wildlife photography it may be better. Another good Tamron lens I recently covered is the 70-300 telephoto which I often use in combination with my 17-70
While I personally have not used this lens I think it's a great budget friendlier option (429GBP for sigma vs 679GBP for tamron) - BUT like I said in the vid I really like zooming in a lot and I'd rather pay the extra money to be able to take photos between 50-70MM - if you don't care as much about that and are happy with the zoom range of the sigma I'd say go for it!
I think, the only visible advantage the Sigma offers is the size and weight, alongside the price. But then Sigma has a closer focus distance which is good for close up shots, product photography, etc. Arthur R has a very good comparison of these 3 lenses that Jimmy has mentioned.
thanks! definitely no need to trade for paid work - I made a whole video on how much I managed to earn with my a6500 in a week, feel free to check it out!
My preference: Sony, Sigma, then Tamron. The Sony sits in the middle in terms of weight and size (very important to me), while having the best AF accuracy, and sharpness among the three. The only problem is the price. After waiting for some time, i got one used at a similar price to the Tamron brand new (still expensive, but wth..) I’m very impressed with image quality, and having really good AF and sharpness wide open at any focal length does make it easier to get good shots in fleeting moments.
I just texted you yesterday to help me decide between the Tamron and Sigma and here you are posting an video on the same and saving lives. Keep up the good work!

@@JimmyShixin Thanks for your quick reply.
How do you get events? I've been DMing on instagram and haven't gotten anything from it. I have leveraged my network and gotten some gigs that way. This is just a side gig for me and not something I need to make a lot of money from lol. Just wondering how you've gotten events?
It’s different for everyone obvs but for me it was a mixture of doing things for cheap / free initially and just super aggressive networking lol - I got my start doing uni events which are easy as I knew students running club nights or societies that had events planned
Outside of uni it becomes tricker and really just revolves around networking all the time and making sure you’re the first person people think of when they need a camera person at an event
Love t hat decision making process
is there a difference in quality between this and the 28-75mm f2.8? where im from i can get the latter used for way less. would it be worth it?
28-75mm is designed for full frame, 17-70mm is designed for APSC. To me it makes sense to go with the lens based on what camera you have.
What about 70-180 mm F/2.8 from Tamron ? I am confused a little bit which one I should get, this 17-70 or 70-180 ?
Well it depends on what kind of photo you want to take, the 70-180 is more zoomed in so if you often take photos indoor it won't be right for you. If you do lots of landscape / wildlife photography it may be better.
Another good Tamron lens I recently covered is the 70-300 telephoto which I often use in combination with my 17-70
@Jimmy Shixin ... Aha ok thx. Then I will consider 70-300mm with/after 17-70mm ! Perfect combo ! Isn't it?
What do you think of the sigma 18-50mm f2.8 comparing to this tamrom lens?
While I personally have not used this lens I think it's a great budget friendlier option (429GBP for sigma vs 679GBP for tamron) - BUT like I said in the vid I really like zooming in a lot and I'd rather pay the extra money to be able to take photos between 50-70MM - if you don't care as much about that and are happy with the zoom range of the sigma I'd say go for it!
I think, the only visible advantage the Sigma offers is the size and weight, alongside the price.
But then Sigma has a closer focus distance which is good for close up shots, product photography, etc. Arthur R has a very good comparison of these 3 lenses that Jimmy has mentioned.
yea that vid is defo worth checking out - Arthur R is my go-to lens review person
3:29 AGREE !!
30mm 1.4 would be my choice (if I had sony's apsc camera)
acc my go to street photo lens, probs woulda been my pick if I didn't love zooming in for no reason haha
It is the..best
Wow, your work is awesome! I’m thinking of trading my APS-C for a full frame cam but I don’t think I need to, just to get paid work! Thanks man!!
thanks! definitely no need to trade for paid work - I made a whole video on how much I managed to earn with my a6500 in a week, feel free to check it out!
My preference: Sony, Sigma, then Tamron. The Sony sits in the middle in terms of weight and size (very important to me), while having the best AF accuracy, and sharpness among the three. The only problem is the price.
After waiting for some time, i got one used at a similar price to the Tamron brand new (still expensive, but wth..)
I’m very impressed with image quality, and having really good AF and sharpness wide open at any focal length does make it easier to get good shots in fleeting moments.
best video lens so far i watch not like other crap nonsense
This lens with the sigma 10-18 is all you need
The price is to high😞😞😭
Das ist nicht ebay das ist Amazon 😂😂😂
