- THE BEST all-round APS-C lens | TAMRON 17-70mm f2.8
The Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 lens is a fast versatile lens designed for APS-C cameras. It has a constant aperture of f2.8 which makes it one of two zoom lenses in the APS-C lineup to have a wide open aperture.
This video will show its optical performance, distortion testing, auto focus in video tests and overall thoughts on the lens.
Tamron surely have done an incredible job to produce such a cheap, versatile quality lens for the APS-C range in Sony.
This lens in a must for APS-C users.

After watching this review on Tamron 17-70 lens, I am thoroughly convinced that this is the perfect all-around lens for me.
Thanks for the great review, Jason.
🍻
Comparison with sony 18-105mm pleaseee 🙏
ohhhhh I like your thoughts
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Specially the OSS stabilizations on both!
@@DanKenj exactly!
That would be nice. I have the 18-105 and was thinking replacing with this one.
Yes, please. I am considering the Tamron 17-70 f2.8 and the Sony 18-105 f4 for my a6000. I would like to know if the budget stretch is worth it for an extra stop of light while giving up a bit of zoom reach.
Great Zoom, got it for couple weeks, I just avoid max 17mm or 70mm combined with f/2.8, cause in these settings quality is really ugly, between 24-55 in most cases gives sharpness like primes.
I just got mine today! Wow. The indoor shots I just took of my dogs are terrific!
f2.8 makes a huge difference over my f4 Sony 18-105. Not even close, and I love my Sony lens for outdoor video. I'm glad I picked it up. It will be perfect on my fx30. Great videos. Keep it up
From reviews videos 2 years ago, it's mentioned that the lense has a vibration issue. Do you know about it?
@@diegocaracasfc I haven’t noticed anything
@@diegocaracasfcwhich issue is it?
@@diegocaracasfc I just picked up a used copy of the Tamron 17-70 and I don't experience any vibration issue. My use case for the lens is to give some new life to a Sony FS100, hoping the newer optics and more light from the 2.8 would benefit the sensor, as well that Tamron's VC would be sufficient to offset some handheld micro jitters (no IBIS in FS100). It accomplishes all of this. If your camera has IBIS, or you're looking for OSS-equivalent lens performance, I'd try it before buying, if that's feasible. I would suspect possible competition between camera and lens stabilization if any erratic image shake is observed. In the case of the FS100, this lens is recognized as a stabilized lens, which was my only fear in such an old camera and with no button on the lens to toggle IBIS. Hope this helps.
Very cool, Jason! Thanks - A little birdy tells me they're available in stores tomorrow!
Hehe. Great job on this one. Impressive lens
how does this compare to the new sigma 18-50 f2.8?
Can't wait to get this lens!
Definitely my favourite APS-C lens by far
Dude your reviews are seriously awesome. Will be picking up this lens. Thank you!
Thank you Dean. Glad you like them
Thank you for the detail review! Glad I didnt buy the sony 16-55 last year, the lack of stabilization made me think more than twice. This lens seems the prefect lens I want. The 70mm is like a bonus, so it it ok to be little soft. Cannot be too greedy for this price.
For the price it just cannot be beaten
Hi, Jason! Great review! I have a very serious issue regarding this lens. I have tried with both IBIS on and off, but the issue remains. I saw that in some of your shots you also had this issue - it feels like the VC (Vibration Compensation) is fighting against itself and sometimes it almost looks like as if it's trying to lock on subjects. in 3:06 you can see this issue for yourself, it does these really weird micro shakes for 1-2 frames and then locks onto the subject once again. I am not sure whether this is an IBIS issue or not, but could you do a couple of more tests with IBIS turned off and on?
I would say this is a lens firmware issue. They would be able to fix it. It is only minor
Hi guys, has this issue been corrected by recent firmware update ? (FX30 user)
Thanks
This fixed by firmware update? if yes, then update for lens for camera?
I have A6400, i am planning for Sony a7iv (Whenever it will release). I already purchased this lens. But i am still confused weather i should go for Tamron 28-75mm full frame so that i can also use that on my sony a7iv. OR stick with this one. I know i will use VC but trust me it isn't very good. I want this lens for mainly b rolls as for a rolls i have sigma 16mm 1.4 and that is a beast.
You did a really good job! :)
I have 18-105 G and would like to see the comparison between them))
sounds like a great idea. I will try get my hands on that lens again
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema thanks! :)
What u think that lens its good on FX30?
Hi Jason. Did you encounter any VC issues with this lens? Some reviews mention there are some random jitters and jumping with this lens. Not sure if it’s a firmware thing. Also, would this lens look great using the clear zoom on the a6400 to zoom in even more? I’m very interested in this lens but I’m not sure if it will be that portable compared to my small lenses. Great review. Thanks!
Did you get an answer for this or tried for yourself? I am eager to get this for my a6600!
i got it!!! finally. together with my sigma 56 its the perfect set and i am ready for all occassions :) great review. thanks for the work!
great choice! both lenses you got there are fantastic
Can Sigma make some zoom lenses for apsc too please
that’s a good quality review right there man, I’ll save money for this one!
@Jason Morris, great vid. Would care sharing what cage you use
around the sony?
that video is actually being edited right now. coming soon :)
Already owning 16-55mm F2.8, and I will still buy this lens.
Oh my haha. Well you will get extra range and VC so that is a plus
Just switched the Sony system and got this to pair with my a6400. Super stoked to have it come in.
Great purchase!
Hey Jason I was wondering if I should get this lens for my sony a6400 or the full frame equivalent if later on I want to get a full frame. So what do you think
that is a very difficult choice as the full frame 28-75mm isn't a wide focal length on aps-c cameras. worse comes to worse you buy the 17-70mm then potentially sell it with your camera if you sell it
Hello. So can we use this for full frame camera too?
Sure, with crop mode turned on...
For sony a72 how much mega pixel will reduce using crop mode ? @cristiat
@ravicholachagudda5912 you'll go from 24 to roughly 10MP in crop mode. Basically the crop factor of APSC in reverse. If 24 is 1.5, then 1 would be around 10...
what about vs the newer (cheaper) 18-55 Sigma F2.8?
Do you think the sony 18-105 f/4 or this lens would be better for travel and some portrait? I have a sigma 30mm 1.4 for low light situations.
tough decision. the only reason why you would choose the 18-105 over this is the extra range. everything else the tamron wins
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema got it, thank you! The other thing is the 18-105 is going for like 400$ on ebay now so there is a pretty big price difference too. Thanks for the help! Subbing for sure!
@@dannyloving5435 oh price is always an important factor. The tamron does perform better but the sony is cheaper and longer focal range. Hope you decide what you want to do
You didn’t mention the sigma 16 - 50mm f2.8 which is a direct competitor to the Tamron too
Thanks for this review, on order currently waiting on it.
Made a great choice in my opinion
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema thanks i just recently purchased the sony 70-350 and with this lens i can sell my sigma trio 16m 30m 56m (might keep the 56 though). 👍
How do you turn off the VC? I’ve seen that people say you do it in the camera but just curious where in Sony menus that would be located.
Hey! Thanks so much for the details ! Do you happen to know what size filter lens kit will fit on this 17-70 lens if I were to purchase it ?
Tamron 17-70mm 2.8 or Sigma 18-35mm1.8 + mc-11 adapter?
Great review and thank you! I'm convinced
I already own the sigma 16&56 im planning to sell my sigma 16 to be more versatile with this tamron, will I fell downgrade to use it compare to my sigma ? in term of sharpness ? thank
production quality of this review, fire bro.
Too kind my bro thank you
Do you think is this going to be available for Canon?
even tho this is 3 years ago, still conviced me to buy it for my a6000
Is this a great portrait lens? I know it’s a good all rounder lens but can I use this if I’m mainly doing portraits? I already have the Sigma 30mm f1.4
How does it compare to the sony 16-55 f2.8?
I don't personally have the Gmaster lens but I have seen some reviews and it is very similar. Gmaster lenses are always the best lenses but come with the high price tag
Nice video! This is what I need for my a6400 new lens! No one gonna talk about Jason only shaved one side of his beard?
Hi Jason, does the lens keep the "position" if put on a zenithal direction? Meaning, if you point it to the sky at perfectly 90 degrees, at 70mm, does the lens get loose and goes back to 50mm? I have this lens (I bought it in January and kept it absolutely in mint condition) and it does not stay in Zenith position (90 degrees) up or down.
Seems like a great all-around lens for the Sony aps-c series!
It definitely is
Jason... I've seen many reviews that say this lens is not a sharp as the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 at the longer side of the lens. What do you think?
I am not prepared to give up sharpness at the longer focal lengths (which is where I usually shoot) just to get some extra wide angle...
I disagree here. This lens certainly is sharp enough for any needs as shown in this video and in my opinion the best versatile option for the aps-c line.
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema I'd really like to try it head to head with the 28-75mm...
hello, can you recommend the 17-70 tamron for the a6000, would like to travel portrai landscape as an all-rounder, it isn’t too big and the autofocus also works with the a6000
100% this is the best APS-C lens to date for the price
Does it fit on G6MAX with A6400 ? Nice video and complete review. Nice job 👌👍
silent linear focusing motors?
I’m buying a Sony a6400.. what you recommend I get Tamron 17-70 f2.8 or Tamron 28-75 f2.8?? Thanks in advance. I’m looking for a lense to be able to do all in one portrait/ scenery/etc.
tamron 17-70 hands down
Hey, awesome video! How loud is the autofocus noise? Can you vlog with it and have a shotgun mic on top?
silent auto focus. they hit a home run with this lens
Great vid! Great lens! There is a noticeable pulsing in the background during the AF tests at 9:03
Really wonder if that could be fixed with a firmware update as I am really looking to pick this up. I do mostly video work and it's quite a draw back in my case
That can be fixed with changing the focus settings also. Fast and responsive isn't usually the best settings. It's too quite and transitions can be too quick and not smooth. The focus will always try to hunt when I'm the fastest setting.
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Thanks for the reply, Jason! That's super helpful!
I own the FE 28-75 on my a6400 right now but find that it is soft. Is the 17-70 sharper and better for the a6400? I am willing to sell and switch even if I lose money to get a sharper image.
absolutely. You get a better field of view than the 28-75mm because that is a full frame lens. I recommend the new Tamron lens
Great review, but I really strugling between the Sony 16-70 f4 Zeiss and Sony 24-70 f4 Zeiss and now the Tamron 17-70 f2.8.
Zeiss isn't that sharp sadly. Check other reviews
With the Zeiss you're paying for a badge.
Does it work on sony full frame?
The Tamron 17-70mm lens and the Sony 24-105 lens would be great for the Sony A74. The 24 -105 for full frame work and the 17-70 for Super 35mm filming in both HD 1080 and 4k 60p mode on the Sony A74
Yes the Tamron lens is a killer
Hey Jason, thanks for such an amazing video about this Tamron - I have a quick question - I own a Sony A7S III... On trying this lens I got very heavy vignetting... does that mean this is not the lens for me?
This is for Apsc not full frames
Solid review! What do you think of the tamron 70-180? Been thinking about that one.
Absolutely loving it. I use it quite a lot
Hi Jason great video thanks for posting. I am concerned that the lens is soft at 70mm, I’d be using it for stills not video. It’s not uncommon for a lens to be not as good at the extremes though, so how is this if you take it back a little? Do you find it soft past 35 mm all the way up to 70mm?
Did you end up getting it? How have you liked it?
Thank you very much for the review.Helped me to make a decision. God bless
Thank you for watching
I should change my 550D + sigma 17-50 2.8 to something. Like your reviews. Waiting new Sony models but gonna get something in 1-2 years. Since Camcorders are out of the question I think something from Sony.
can you help me which lens i choose for video, this one or Tamron 28-75mm?
this one for aps-c cameras for sure
Bestioustest review .... Subscribed 🔥🔥😁😁
Is this good lens for product photography ?
I already own the sigma 16mm
Using zv-e10
And when i need 32mm i can use active stabilization for crop + zoom
Or it is better to just get the sigma 56mm one ?
I'm confused between Sony 18-105, tamron 17-70, sigma 24-70 for my a6400.
I just want an all rounder, mainly for portrait and videography
My opinion, this Tamron lens. Brilliant performance and perfect overall focal range and image quality
how does it perform with a gimbal when it comes to consistent stabilization?
It's very good on the gimbal. Doesn't fight against it. I have another video coming using this
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema woooooow that was quick! thanks man! that was my first dilemma and good thing it works fine with gimbal even doing quick zoom??
Go for this for portrets or getting a prime?
Works great for portraits. Much more versatility than a prime.
It's a gem, modest range...f stop and shake reduction..beats all
Wow really digging that VC! Quick question; If one has an a6600 and can get either lens for nearly the same price, which would be the better choice? What about for an A6400? Asking for a friend
Damn. A6600 is a pretty damn good camera that's for sure
Nice review!
Glad you enjoyed it
I was considering getting the tamron 17-28 ff lens for my a6400 but the new 17-70 fills the gap I was looking for perfectly
Such a great focal length
A6400 + tamron 17-70 + Ronin Sc - Will the ronin hold it?
yes it should do if balanced correctly
Finally! I can sell my old lenses and buy this instead. Thank you!
you won't regret it
Is this good for street photography & portraits
yes very good for it
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema should I get this for landscape and portraits or get the 10-18mm and the 85 1.8
Good Video helps a lot thanks!!!
When will we be able to buy this lens?
I has only just been released so it should be available for purchase
4:15 "price is actually a big deal to some people", lol yeah it is for pretty much everyone
Should I consider this lens vs the Sigma trio?
That is tough. Sigma trio gives you much better now light performance being f1.4 but the three lenses are more expensive together. I would choose tamron and deal with low light by trying to add more light
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema THANKS!!!
Strange it looks soft in chart test, but not that much in video test at 70mm. Thank you for performing these test especially on full frame.
It's definitely sharp on my computer. Could potentially be video quality as it was a 1080 screen record and upscaled to 4k
New sigma 18-mm50 makes this a hard choice. It is cheaper but less range on both ends...
sir jason can i have your sony a6000?=)
My Gosh... Music is too loud
Thank you for this review!
I was looking forward to this lens but thinking about it... I already own the 18-105 f4. I don't think this would be much of an upgrade? It's only one stop faster and has 30mm less reach... It would be one hell of an upgrade over the 16-50 kitlens though.
There a review out there from Jake Sloan where you can download his raw files and I have to say, I wasn't very impressed. The 18-105 isn't the sharpest lens out there but nor is this Tamrom (at first glance).
I rather pay a few €€€ more for the Sony 16-55 2.8 and have a very sharp lens. (Admitted I'm a bit of a pixel peeper and spoiled by the Sigma lenses!)
I wouldn't buy it if you have the 18-105. The only reason it woukd be worth it is if you do a lot of low light video work. Than i woukd definitely buy it
"Only" one stop faster... That can make a helluva difference imho. Have the 18-105 as well and yeah, it's not that sharp overall. The AF could also be better. What I've seen/heard so far is that the Tamron outperforms it in terms of sharpness and AF. But for me it was a very good start for getting into photography back then. The 16-55 is (still) simply way to expensive for having no OSS and less range compared to the Tamron. Whereas the price of the Tamron will drop within the next few months and then it's really a no-brainer. If I wanna shoot really sharp images I use a Sigma prime.
@@sashinger5230 The 18-105 is the first lens I bought after I got my A6000. Never loved it a lot but struggle to find anything better. Sometimes it's pin sharp and sometimes the pictures look soft, I don't get it :-) AF is ok for me. And of course one stop more light is nice but not THAT big of a deal for me. I rather have 30mm extra range.
I now upgraded to the A6600 so having no OSS on the 16-55 is not an issue for me. A6600 + Sigma primes = pure joy btw :D
The Tamron stays on my radar though!
Please make an update video comparing this with the Sigma 1850.
Also this was a very distracting video. All with your biceps and muscles it was really hard to focus 😂
Nice Video! I will do more research, but I think it would be interesting to add this lens to my videos! Thank you for this useful information
This lens does not disappoint that's for sure. Best budget lens for APS-C hands down
Hey, man! Solid review. I made one also. Awesome lens! 💯🔥‼️
awesome my bro. I will check it out
your corner sharpness test are flawed! because you are not showing the viewer, the corner of the image
Yeah I was looking for this comment, I noticed the same thing.
that is only at 17mm because it was so wide for my chart. i would not say its flawed. you can see the corner of the box. the rest of the zoom range shows the chart.
On the charts 70mm sucks, but your video test at 70....looked absolutely acceptable and good to me??
Your necklace is hanging messy
So pretty much unusable at 70mm 2.8
Definitely usable. Pixel peeping it's not solid but regular size it's still brilliant
