I don't know man, I could easily see Mitch telling Steven's joke about driving his house around. Both of them really are pure comic geniuses...too bad Mitch left us so soon.
My favorite Steve Wright joke was, “If you kill a mime, do you need to use a silencer?” My favorite Mitch Hedburg joke was, “I would lay in my twin bed at night and wonder where my brother was.” Both hilarious!
I remember Steven Wright's standup in the 80's and I find him just as funny now as then. Mitch Hedburg I recall on "The 70's Show" and as the stoner Frank who ran "The Hub". "I didn't lose a leg in Vietnam to so I can serve some hot dogs to teenagers". "You have both of your legs Frank". "I know, I did NOT lose a leg in Vietnam". So funny.
"There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot." Brilliant on so many levels. The fine line is the fishing line, literally.
I've been that idiot. In a chartered boat too. The difference was $1500 and 4 barf bags. which we used for chum. we had shrimp for bait. when we got back, we had bait scampi
My favorite Steven Wright joke is: “You know when you're sitting on a chair and you lean back so you're just on two legs and you lean too far so you almost fall over but at the last second you catch yourself? I feel like that all the time...”
Who has used that joke in conversation? IF you havent.. you should.. it's hysterical...(PRO TIP....Just make sure when you do you arent on stage with a mic at a comedy club..then you got trouble. )
Steven and Mitch: Two of the greatest ever to pick up a mic. I was so fortunate to see Mitch in concert just a few months before his untimely passing. Favorite Steven joke: I wrote a song, but I can’t read music, so I don’t know what it is. Every once in a while I’ll be listening to the radio and I say, “I think I might have written that.” Favorite Mitch joke: I saw this wino, he was eating grapes. I was like, "Dude, you have to wait."
Saw Steven live once. It was a great show. He opened by walking out on stage and picked up a guitar. With the spotlight on him, he saw the shine off the guitar move around the audience, and said "that's weird, it didn't do that in the store...". Set the guitar back down, and never touched it again the entire set.
When I saw him he came out to a stool and glass of water on the stool.......He picked up the glass, took a drink, then repeatedly set the glass halfway on/off the stool's edge and couldn't get it to stay. So he raised the glass, grabbed the stool, slid it under the raised glass, then set the glass down and said "Good Evening".........lmao.
I always lament all the material we're missing since Mitch's life was so tragically cut short. I really would've loved to see what he gave us next. Rip Mitch thanks for making my early 20s filled with comedy gold, we miss you.
Two of my all time faves. I once met Steven Wright in an airport. I asked him for his autograph. He asked me my name and signed it “To ____ Happy Birthday forever”
Steven Wright will always win in my book for his deadpan, monotone delivery. "One time I...No, that wasn't me." They didn't use this one, it's my all-time Steven Wright favorite line
@Jim Cheseborough I don't even think he is under discovered. There is an MLB pitcher who has the same name. I was watching a game and Wright came on to pitch. The broadcasters told everyone to say their favorite Steven Wright joke. All of the broadcasters contributed. Camera operators, coaches, and more. That is just one example. He's very well known.
Not everyone gets Steven Wright. His jokes aren't as obvious as those of other comedians. So, if you're one of the many who do get him but have friends who don't, you still might feel like he's underappreciated, if not underrated.
I love their surreal, deadpan humor. They approach the world in such a skewed way: both even have jokes about gravity in this compilation. Hedberg was an authentically nervous version of his true self on stage, whereas Wright seems more like he's adopted a comic persona. You can see Wright sometimes fighting to not break character by chuckling at his jokes, whereas Hedberg openly laughs at his own material.
I saw Stephen live in the early 90's. His live show was NOTHING like any of his specials or recorded shows that I've ever heard or seen anywhere else. And IT. WAS. AMAZING.
Every single time I get a receipt, I think "No need to bring ink and paper into this transaction." And every time I'm given a flyer, receipt, or junk mail, I think "Here, YOU throw this away."
Two of my favorite Steven Wright bits. "When I was a kid we had a quicksand box in our bacckyard. I was an only child. Eventually." "The other day I got on the bus and sat next to a blonde chinese girl. She was crying so I asked her what was wrong. She said I have a problem and my therpist can't help me. I said maybe I can help, what's the problem? She said I'm a nymphomaniac but I am only attracted to jewish cowboys. By the way my name is Karen. I said hi Karen my name is Bucky Goldstien."
I’ve been a long time Steven Wright fan but some of Mitch’s jokes are hilarious in their silliness. The broken escalator one, and raising money to buy a machine that shows how much money has been raised, for example.
I never thought to juxtapose these two together like this! Whoever came up with the idea for this video should get a lot of credit. Awesome, both comedians.🤣
Steven Wrights jokes always next level, you can even hear when the audience retells the joke in their head real fast then start laughing. The “large seashell collection scattered along all the oceans.”
“Seashell collection” has always been my favorite example of Wright's material. It, IMO, perfectly epitomizes his style. I first heard it at one of his performances in the 80s, and, just as you describe it, there was that slight delay followed by illumination, a mini-epiphany. Experiencing his performance was a pure pleasure.
I said this joke once while brewing a pot of coffee for the household and nobody got the funny and started to disect, analyze and like a gang of chimps trying to operate a computer attacked me demanding an explanation! 😳 Well I'm waiting 🤔🧐🤨
His delivery is often the exact same. Mitch has a bunch of vocal cadence fluctuation in his. Would be harder to replicate mitch's delivery. I'm Steven is great too but mitch of like on his own level
Steven's delivery seems forced. Trying to enunciate a lot while trying to act like it is incidental mumbling. It just doesn't work. His jokes are often good.
My favorite/most quoted lines from each of these guys is most definitely the "I used to do drugs...I still do...but I used to too" from Mitch and, "I sprayed some spot remover on my dog the other day and he disappeared" from Steven....with close runners up being the sock thickness, and the hippopotamus 😜🤘
One of the great things about Mitch was his behavior outside of the one-liners. His laughter--at his own joke--was infectious, and sometimes drew more laughs (of delight) from the audience than the joke itself. He would plead with the audience to like him more, and then show gratitude when they responded. He was magic.

These two are/were absolute artisans at this particular style, and what's great is that if you were to listen to the album of one, you do not more or less get the same experience as you would listening to the other. Hedberg's was far more fun, like something you could tell at a party to make quick friends, whereas Wright's style is far more cerebral and abstract. The biggest difference ultimately would be when they do self-effacing humor - Hedberg made himself out as an underdog during those times (like he was bombing at another show), whereas Wright made himself sound like an alien who attempted to interact with human beings slightly before it was ready.
I grew up listening to Steven Wright, laughing at times, till I cried. Listening to Mitch Hedburg, I sometimes cry until I can’t breathe. These guys are a danger to my health.
My two favorite Wright jokes are the one about everything in his apartment being replaced with an exact replicable and the seashell collection. Two collections of verbal statements that evoke whole surreal worlds. Absolutely evocative.
I loved Mitch in that 70's show "I did not lose a leg in Vietnam for this" Eric but you have both legs Mitch "That's what I said I did not lose a leg in Vietnam "
Stephen Wright made me laugh so hard my drink was coming out of my nose. I lost my car keys. That’s when you get your apartment started and drive around the block
man it's so hard to have to pick one because they're both legends with killer delivery. but. Steven Wright's delivery is absolutely legendary world class. The most matter-of-fact sounding teller of jokes I've heard. And i'm saying that as a huge Mitch Hedberg fan, one of the all time greatest comedians in his own right.
I'll bet that statistically there'd be a generational correlation in preference for one over the other. Millennials and Gen Zers would likely fall more prevalently in the Hedberg camp, Boomers in the Wright camp. Gen Xers would lean to the Wright but by a lesser extent. The younger generations are more about authenticity. The older audience are more about the content and performance. As an Xer, I was a little dumbfounded to read criticism for Wright because he seemed to be portraying a character and not his true self. Then I realized there difference I described above may account for their perspective. To me Hedberg seemed like a stoned albeit talented guy getting on stage on amateur night repeating better than average jokes from rote memory, without having rehearsed his performance. I appreciate comedians from the Silent generation but to a limited extent--probably for similar generational differences.
I remember seeing Steven Wright on the tv as a kid. The one joke I always remember is, "I went into the General Store. They wouldn't let me buy anything specific.". For some reason, I never heard of Mitch Hedberg, probably because he was doing the rounds in the late 90s and I wasn't following stand-up as much then. I only found him because he comes up when you search for Steven on RUclips. I think they're both great. Credit to Mitch for having to make sure he didn't use one of Steven's observations, of which there are hundreds.
Mitch Hedberg and Steven Wright were the first two standup comedians I identified with. Not just because of their styles and approaches to the one-liners and non-sequiturs, but because I thought they seemed awkward onstage. And with me, being socially awkward and sometimes shy, I related to them so much and still do. They're two of the best and still a couple of my favorite comedians.
Both hilarious! My most memorable Steven Wright joke is when he's ordering at a fast food joint and says he'll "have a small Coke in a large cup, and just fill it up the rest of the way."
Good idea putting these together. We were just watching Mitch in the car, and my friend said "Check out Steven Wright, too". He had to repeat himself though. He was an AM radio announcer, his voice faded out under a bridge.
It's really funny to listen to these legends and how their comedy/mannerisms and even...jokes...have trickled down to Comedians today. I can hear a lot of Tom Segura, Chris D'Elia, Bert and even Rogan in there. Absolute pioneers.

These guys are a danger to my health.
I had the luck to catch Mitch 3 weeks before he left. Met him back stage. Silly man.
You mean he was silly in a good way???
@@mohamedabdel-gawad9573 He was
brilliant man. not silly just clever, with a funny & positive way of telling jokes.
LEGENDS THAT HELPED FORM MY SENSE OF HUMOR…….
Thanks gentlemen, it’s coming in handy these days….😂🤣😏🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
😂🤣🤣 So ironically I just finished watching Half Baked and now as I’m watching this I just realized that Steven Wright was “The Guy”. 😂🤣
Lol yes. Greatest cameo ever
@@wesleyantrim6648 😂🤣 I concur! It had to be the most cushiest role ever for him!
It was the perfect role for him
Yeah, Bob Saget's cameo sucked.
Omg I didn’t know that .. mind blown
This was masterfully executed. Thank you dear editor.
"i bought some batteries. .....
But they weren't included ....."
........So I had to buy them again.
Then I bought some used paint
I bought it in the shape of a house.
My two favorite Wright jokes are the one about everything in his apartment being replaced with an exact replicable and the seashell collection. Two collections of verbal statements that evoke whole surreal worlds. Absolutely evocative.
Yes! Those and the one above French toast in the Renaissance. 😅
These two are legends!
Wright is cleaner and funnier
Mitch was a lot better even though they're both good. I just wish Mitch was still around.
There is no battle, both are absolute masters of the craft.
Steven Wright is the master…he invented this type of humor.
You have to like dry humor.
@@nancydemoss2945 …I’m pretty dusty
He did not invent it. He's pretty open about his influences.
Two absolutely brilliant comics. Love them both. Wish Mitch was still here. Thanks for the video.
I love their style. Two of my all-time favorites.
There guys are both a riot. Saw Mitch live he was awesome.
I loved Mitch in that 70's show "I did not lose a leg in Vietnam for this" Eric but you have both legs Mitch "That's what I said I did not lose a leg in Vietnam "
Best Steven Wright line…
“I bought a cordless extension cord“
Lol and also.." I bought a pack of batteries... They weren't included"
Steven Wright was the first of his kind and the best. Love his way of thinking.
If Mitch was still around it would be amazing to see these two do each other's material in their style.
If BOTH were around I think you mean. :)
@@louispconstant6624 Steven is still alive.
The first time I read a dictionary I thought it was poem about everything.
Steven used to be alive. He still is be he used to be too.
@@jelassiterII Nice one.
My neighbor has a circular driveway. He never leaves.
Steven Wright
I never realized how similar these two legends were in their approach to comedy. Genius!
Mitch's Strategic Grill Locations is one of comedy's all time treasures.
What a party to be in same room with Steven Wright, Gary Larson, Bill Watterson, and Mitch at the same time. Comedic overload.
That is the greatest idea of people. Pure perfection
I'd add Dave Barry (columnist/humorist) too! Maybe Spike Milligan and Peter Cook, as well...
That'd be a fat slice of comedy genius.
Stephen Wright made me laugh so hard my drink was coming out of my nose. I lost my car keys. That’s when you get your apartment started and drive around the block
Steven Wright any day. What a legend.
Not even a question, he is the best
Oh I don't know man I feel like Mitch was just finding his groove. But I like em both. I didn't realize how similar they were.
Agreed
I hate Steven. Mitch is wayyyyy better
man it's so hard to have to pick one because they're both legends with killer delivery.
These two guys are hands down my favorite comedians. Awesome video ❤
I've gotta go with Mitch. His delivery is just so funny.
"I bought a decaffeinated coffee table. It looks just the same you wouldn't tell the difference."
- Steven Wright
Mitch Hedberg and Steven Wright were the first two standup comedians I identified with. Not just because of their styles and approaches to the one-liners and non-sequiturs, but because I thought they seemed awkward onstage. And with me, being socially awkward and sometimes shy, I related to them so much and still do. They're two of the best and still a couple of my favorite comedians.
So to sum it up: You used to be socially awkward. You still are, but you used to be too?
@@brianoconnor1949 Nailed it!
Oh god, thanks for this edit. These two are my all time favorites.
The first time I read the dictionary I thought it was a poem about everything
I finally finished reading the dictionary, it turns out the zebra did it
These two deserve awards for funny stuff.
This is perfect! These are the two names that come to mind when I hear the term " one liners"! Thanks for putting this dream team together, sort of. 😊
'Milton Jones' is the 3rd of this bunch. Check him.. He is British.
@@joshharrison2657 Completely correct.
My favorite Steven Wright joke was...
"I went fishing with Salvador Dali.
He used a dotted line."
“He caught every other fish.”
These 2 would be so damn awesome in modern meme culture.
Steven Wright is still alive lol.
Yes
"meme culture" is an oxymoron.
"I feel like people handing out flyers are just saying 'here, you throw this away '" -Mitch Hedberg
Stark contrast in talent for me. When I’m in the mood for comedy, Stephen Wright will have me in stitches laughing from start to finish.
Mitch was such a rock star. He was a beautiful man. That demon had him so hard, what a tragedy. Steven Wright will forever be one of my favorites
2 of my absolute favorites thank you for putting this together
Both hilarious! My most memorable Steven Wright joke is when he's ordering at a fast food joint and says he'll "have a small Coke in a large cup, and just fill it up the rest of the way."
Good idea putting these together. We were just watching Mitch in the car, and my friend said "Check out Steven Wright, too". He had to repeat himself though. He was an AM radio announcer, his voice faded out under a bridge.
classic Steve Wright hands down the best, timing is everything
Mr. Wright is my all time favorite. There are good comedians, better ones, even best ones, but only one can be on top: Mr. Wright.
Steven Wright: "If somebody asked George Washington for his ID, do you think he pulled out a quarter?"
It's really funny to listen to these legends and how their comedy/mannerisms and even...jokes...have trickled down to Comedians today. I can hear a lot of Tom Segura, Chris D'Elia, Bert and even Rogan in there. Absolute pioneers.
