His laughter--at his own joke--was infectious, and sometimes drew more laughs (of delight) from the audience than the joke itself. He would plead with the audience to like him more, and then show gratitude when they responded. He was magic.

These two are/were absolute artisans at this particular style, and what's great is that if you were to listen to the album of one, you do not more or less get the same experience as you would listening to the other. Hedberg's was far more fun, like something you could tell at a party to make quick friends, whereas Wright's style is far more cerebral and abstract. The biggest difference ultimately would be when they do self-effacing humor - Hedberg made himself out as an underdog during those times (like he was bombing at another show), whereas Wright made himself sound like an alien who attempted to interact with human beings slightly before it was ready.

I'll bet that statistically there'd be a generational correlation in preference for one over the other. Millennials and Gen Zers would likely fall more prevalently in the Hedberg camp, Boomers in the Wright camp. Gen Xers would lean to the Wright but by a lesser extent. The younger generations are more about authenticity. The older audience are more about the content and performance.
As an Xer, I was a little dumbfounded to read criticism for Wright because he seemed to be portraying a character and not his true self. Then I realized there difference I described above may account for their perspective.
To me Hedberg seemed like a stoned albeit talented guy getting on stage on amateur night repeating better than average jokes from rote memory, without having rehearsed his performance.
I appreciate comedians from the Silent generation but to a limited extent--probably for similar generational differences.
