Daaum bro. I've searched the web all day long. Everybody is like, buy a belted tire, buy a new servo, you can't put smaller tires in, top speed will be less. But this is like the result for a dollar. I will be greatful to you always.
Great tip. Duct tape is strong and the glue they put on the duct tape is quite good so with a clean surface it's a great way of solving the ballooning. The tape is used on dirty HVAC ducting so I'm sure it's a great way to go with clean surface. It's better than drywall tape and shoe glue.
+kevin Unknown Thank you very much my friend. The taping works like a charm. I should have some run videos up soon of them on my Rustler on 4s lipo. Thanks for watching, subbing, and commenting...it is appreciated very much. Have fun!
I did this today and it saved me a fortune buying hard to find belted tyres. On an 8s truck this completely solved the serious front ballooning problem I was having. Many thanks!
I usually go around more times on On-road style tires...2 or 3 turns. Off road tires - 2 is usually enough to do the job. IMO. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Ha Ha! Thanks man! I love that comparison indeed. Thanks for watching and commenting Ant Man! I'm getting ready to get back to work and I hope your along for the ride! Take care, and have a wonderful start to your week man!
You need a sign off phrase. Seriously! Watch one of Bob Ross's shows and copy his. No one will figure it out. Half of the people that used to watch him are six feet under.
This was very helpful video thank you sir I will be attempting this but soon as my new tires come in. Have you used the same method with a glue on tire wheel combination?
Sweet, just started my r/c hobby and have already ripped through 2 sets on my e-revo running 2 x 3s lipos, going to give it a try...thanks and thumbs up and subbed.
How thick is your tape? Or how many times a tire do you normally go? Have you ever tried taping the foam in it as well? I am not a fan of bead lock so I glue my tires and ever so often when racing I break a bead and throw that foam ring, the tire is kind of done at that point, then I gotta trade tires for the remainder and it’s time for new bead lock, just curious I imagine you have experimented this method. Last question have you ever tried “home foam method where you use spray foam inside your tires? It’s messy as hell, but if you add a little armourall or oil to the outside of rims and tires when the foam expands filling the outside of the tire it won’t stick to anything and will just break off when the tires and stick to the wheels or rims.
I'm sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I have not used the methods you described. They would be worth a try. Since duct tape works in most situations I have encountered, I never tried anything else. My main go-to to prevent ballooning is to find a proper foam...I like to use Crawler Innovation Deuces Wild foams for that purpose. If they do not have a solution, that is when the good old duct tape saves the day. 😎 Thanks for viewing and commenting.
I have not personally tried this method on the tires mentioned, so I cannot be 100% sure. At those speeds, I would feel that if you tried this method, it would be wise to possibly balance the tire after taping. But that is still an opinion, as I have no experience with the tires you mentioned. Thanks for watching and commenting!
That's what I like to hear my friend...I'm all about sharing the experiences I have in R/C for others to enjoy and be inspired to try some new things. Thanks for viewing and commenting, there will be more to come very soon.
This method can be done with any tire...BUT...I would look into some of the closed-cell foams for SC trucks that Crawler Innovation makes. I have used those for Short Course trucks, including my Senton, which has SC Raid wheels and SC tires from Pro-Line Racing. The Crawler Innovation foams are stiff and make for a very nice option to help ballooning and handling compared to the stock foams most tires come with. crawlerinnovations.com/deuces-wild/2-2-3-0/
+Ryan Black I like the sound of that. I appreciate your support my friend. What your saying would be a wonderful thing. Let's see how it goes. I got more video coming. :) Thanks for your time as well. :)
+Dave of RC Patrol nice! Great to hear that! Don't let anyone discourage you if you get a bad comment! You are great in every way! Your voice is perfect for RUclips, you have a great intro, and a welcoming table. You have the intelligence to do this and everything else for RUclips and other social media things. Love ya!
Wow I am very impressed with that tip I need to do that from my Colossus love the way you demonstrated it and explained it very nice work my brother keep them coming :-)
+James Johnson RC I was shocked to see how well it worked for myself. I am glad you liked the video, I too am going to do my monster truck tires as well James!
good video I like what you did and gave good detail on how you did things. but I tried taping my tired and it just took longer to rip the tires off the rims from 6s erevo.
I can believe it...you may need to invest in some real belted tires, and see how they do. Although I run 6s on my MM2 in my Summit with taped Road Rage 3.8's and I have not blew them off yet. thanks for viewing and commenting my friend.
Excellent video... really shows how far behind RC tire tech is compared to full scale tires. Past the research on rubber compounds used and foam padding with tread designs to work with the soft material these are little little more than improved toy "look alike" tires that behave poorly above 4S geared fast. Modern RC tires need to be made composite and use Kevlar and other materials available... this video shows how simple eliminating the most obvious problem is but this is just an important step in the right direction as far as real performance issues go. Any race car driver will tell you your tires are EVERYTHING and nothing works well if they don't work well. IMO RC Cars are only 50% real RC "hobby grade" scale models right now because the tires being used are still toy tires. It will take a large tire manufacture like Michelin that understands the complexity of building good tires to step in and do it right when the money available in the RC Car & Truck Hobby attracts them.... not sure what they are waiting for at this stage in the game... huge market with established cash flow increasing with FPV that needs round wheels. If you want see how bad RC tires and wheels are drive them FPV and you will see how out of round some are. You really notice your tires when you get in and drive the car yourself rather that watch it being driven LOS. You feel what's happening when you are inside the car and you want good tires and wheels in perfect balance to make the FPV view smooth when you hit the gas... remember the wheels are 4 gyros creating stability.... WHEN balanced well.
Hi, I’m from the future…. They still haven’t truly figured it out. Yes there’s belted options but slim and we have 4-8s cars coming from manufacturers ballooning and even exploding 😅
good walkthrough. just wondering what the advantage of doing this is? And one thing I can definitely say helps is to balance your wheel/tire after mounting the tire. I use dynamite balancing tape since it's light. It may take more of the weights to balance heavier beadlocks and rock crawler setups, but anything that goes fast it will run much smoother when the wheels/tires aren't out of balance. This is probably more useful for on road vehicles and high speed buggies or trucks than a crawler.
There is no exact amount really, but personally I usually do about 2 passes as even as possible. You could do more if you like, but I have found 2 even times around to be more than good for most situations. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Please excuse my newbie question but my understanding is that you vent your tires for two purposes. 1. to keep your tires from ballooning as much, and 2. To allow any debris or moisture/water that might be I’ve gotten inside to expel. Personally I’d rather not put holes in my tires if I don’t have to, but could you kindly set me straight on this topic? Thank you very much for the wonderful videos!
Indeed. Thanks for the comment! Balancing is that extra step that can work wonders on-road and off. Definitely, a positive move to balance the wheels after. I have tried balanced and unbalanced, and on my basher, it did not matter as much as on my on-road vehicles. All-in-all, good balancing is vital to the best performance. Gluing the foams to the wheel, I have never tried. I will have to see how that method works in the future. Thanks again.
+Andrew Siekierda Pre-mounts are a bit more tricky, as you have to remove the tire from the wheel first. I have done it before, but it is a pain to pull off. But if you are good with removing tires from wheels, then it's worth a shot.
I have found ballooning makes you go faster. Consistency is the loss....but whenever tires are ballooning (assuming the tire is good) the problem is with the powertrain's torque. In nitro vehicles, it's almost always the clutch
I feel ya, but the loss of control is ridiculous. Fun at times sliding around on pizza cutters, but I like to control my power a little bit more. Thanks for viewing and commenting.
If you mean, to the wheel? Yes, if you have that style of wheel, in the video I used beadlocks, so no glue was needed. If you meant, adding a layer of glue after the tape...I have never used glue with tape, the tape has been enough for me. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Nice video I'll be doing this today for sure. In your next video though you do sound just like Vin diesel lol I want here you yell "I'm not running" lol.
Thanks for viewing and commenting. The tires shown are Pro-Line Racing, there is a link in the description to them. The wheels are Pro-Line Racing as well. Beadlocks for SC trucks.
Doesn't really matter that much, as all you are trying to do is scuff the surface a bit, so the tape sticks better. I use 400grit, 320grit before, and 600 as well. I wouldn't go too fine like over 1000 grit, but don't go too low like 100 grit. My experience lies with the grits I mentioned so, if you would like to try some different, feel free to. I am just letting you know what I used in the past. Thanks for commenting.
Some people would use this method to keep the tires from ballooning which can cause unwanted handling characteristics. It’s a matter of choice really and this method has worked for me in the past. Now days, tire companies are making belted tires which handle the problem just as well if not better.
Do you like the split six beadlocks better than SC rims that need to be glued? What are the upsides of beadlocks instead of glued rims? What are the downsides?
I will not say I like one over the other. They both have their purposes. I like the beadlocks simply because tire changing is easy. When you wear out a set of tires you can just unscrew and change them out. Glued tires are a little more hard to change up. Performance wise...the beadlocks on higher power systems will allow the bead t he come loose sometimes. Not all the time but if your doing a lot of tire off the ground throttling...lol..then the ballooning and stretching of the tire will pull out of the beadlock. So for those situations...glued is better. Hope that helped.
I did the sandpaper and alchohol to make sure the tape sticks to the tire over time. A clean surface is always better when applying tapes and adhesives. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend!
Dave of RC Patrol Ok, also I watched most of the videos on RUclips on how to take the tires off of the rims . What is the best way to do it without warping the wheel or destroying the tire/foam ?
That is a tough one. I have tried a heat gun as well as boiling water. I managed to save the foams as they were closed cel foams. The wheels...depending upon what kind they are is a different story. Some have had success...some have failed with boiling water...mine came out ok..just be careful and wear gloves.
They should be fine. Just be careful and don't leave them boiling too long. It takes some patience and time. I did them one side at a time and cooled in between.
Depends on the power of the Rig. 1-2 rolls gets the job done. I have done 3 wraps on some street tires for a 6s Summit. Still got them around now. Thanks for watching!
+Rafael Rosales I look at it like this...Everyone is not running 3s and ballooning as shown in the video. For some they will never experience this matter. So for those of us that want more than the tire can handle...there are other options...or...methods as shown in my vid. :) Grip wise, design wise...Pro-Line is doing their job.
I know the feeling oh too well. That's why my Rustler sits on taped tires as of now. The vibration and stretching of the tire was causing the same problems as you stated. Works like a charm now. Thanks for commenting and viewing my friend. Enjoy that Rustler as well, one of my favorite rigs!
Dave of RC Patrol oh yeah they are fun IV got it lowered and all kinds of stuff it's hard to afford tires and wheels tho IV got a sidewinder 3 and 100,000 rpm castle 4 pole
1/18 Badlands and 1/8 Road Rage..then I do run 2.2/3.0 Super Swampers and Street Fighter. I like to switch up and test a lot of tires to see which one works best. I love the Badlands 1/8 but I am going to try the 2.8 Badlands very soon!
sorry if i sound ignorant but i dont see the point in taping tires to stop ballooning for offroad anyway. the way i see it if your pinned down a straight and your tires are ballooning then there is less tire contact with the track -so less friction= more speed? i understand that there is loss of grip also, but their not usually ballooning around corners and while acelerting were grip is needed. if you get what im trying to say
What your saying depends on the type of motor setup. With a high power setup you will get ballooning in corners as well if your in loose terrain. The method is for those that want to stop balooning, if your not getting that...not for you. :) In my case...it worked well for me, considering driving while ballooned is VERY different than not ballooning. Tested and tried time after time. Much better ride and control without the ballooning. But as I said, not for everyone or every situation.
+Radio Control Patrol im running a 10.5 on a 80amp esc system which is the max turns for 2wd mod sct in my country and i dont get tire balooning while turning while turning unless im doing donuts and my truck starts to diff out. but i can understand how that happens with 4wd vehicles when turning and on loose terain were it may become necessary but surely if ballooning was a consistent negavite characteristic tire manufacturers would change so the didnt do it. and i get what your saying
I understand totally. The problem is not that big of a deal for most people, so companies will not change how they design tires for the small crowd of RC powermongers out there. Methods like this can help if needed! If you don't need to tape them...no worries...For me...worked like a charm and much more stable. Thanks for commenting and viewing...have a nice weekend my friend.
good stuff...all you gotta do afterwards is make sure to balance your wheels...notice once he finished and was hitting the throttle that the wheel was pulling and wobbling...good info tho man!
Thanks for viewing and commenting. Want to see some real wobble. Try driving on non taped tires under power..lol. There you will wobble, lose control, and crash..LOL. Have a good day my friend.
instagram.com/p/BFJoA4Zxw9A/?taken-by=radiocontrolpatrol Check that photo out, for a look at why I tape my tires. My Summit on untaped Super Swampers. 6S power will make you find some tape. Unless you like ice skating on grass...LOL
That I have tried onroad only on 4s. They held up on-road, but I have not tried 4s on these wheels offroad as of yet. With the taping, they don't stretch much at all so I would say yes...but I am not 100% sure on 4s.
Daaum bro. I've searched the web all day long. Everybody is like, buy a belted tire, buy a new servo, you can't put smaller tires in, top speed will be less. But this is like the result for a dollar. I will be greatful to you always.

You are correct...must make sure the surface is as clean as possible. Thanks for commenting and watching the video! Have a good one!
I was about to spend 50/80 bucks for XO tires on ebay, till I seen this. Like how you went through the details and you now have a sub from me!

I didn't know Tone Loc was into RC cars. Thanks for the video man!
:) Thanks for watching and commenting my friend. Glad it helped.
My man you are very intelligent..... I been racing rc for years and the tape idea was the bomb!!🤯😱😎
Cool tip!
Nice one man! I will try this on some moster truck tires I bought.
Good luck and thanks for watching and commenting!
Brilliant job my man cracking tip 💪🏽❤️👌🏽
Hello thank u for tips I have a quick question how many times did u tape around the wheel
I usually go around more times on On-road style tires...2 or 3 turns. Off road tires - 2 is usually enough to do the job. IMO. Thanks for watching and commenting.
your like the Bob Ross of RC. I feel relaxed and smarter at the same time. lol

Great info , thanks for the step by step video. Video is nicely done too.
Pretty cool job :)
The result is really impressive!
It seems too easy for you lol
Happy midweek and keep on RCing :)

I'm still new 🤷♂️
Thank you, That fixed the problem with my HPI Porsche with 3S power, problem solved!

if you hawe such a powerfull car so when you drive the tires baloons and the handling gets bad
Very valuable information thanks

Roughly how many wraps around the tire with the tape? Tough to tell in fast forward, looks like 2-3 wraps?

I wouldn't go too fine like over 1000 grit, but don't go too low like 100 grit. My experience lies with the grits I mentioned so, if you would like to try some different, feel free to. I am just letting you know what I used in the past. Thanks for commenting.
Apologies my ignorance but what’s the benefit of this and can I used on 4wd buggy?
Some people would use this method to keep the tires from ballooning which can cause unwanted handling characteristics. It’s a matter of choice really and this method has worked for me in the past. Now days, tire companies are making belted tires which handle the problem just as well if not better.
Thanx Toretto! Cool video man👍
Basically, makes it steel belted, in a manner of speaking
I can dig it
I look at it the same way my friend. Thanks for commenting and subscribing. Poor man belting...lol
Great idea.great vid.thanks dave chappell
I been thinking about doing this for my savage flux. How well does it hold up in the long run?
I still have the set I taped right now. I have used them on up to 4s lipo. Depends on the driver in the end, IMO.
Dave chapelle I didn't know you like rc cars! lolz kidding good video I just kept picture Dave chapelle skits
LOL....Thanks for watching and commenting my friend! Have a great weekend!
Bead locks on a RC is so cool.
Good vid i gotta try this
love the video thumbs up😇
Thank you for watching and commenting my friend. More to come, indeed.
No problem..
The people who disliked are probably, rc haters. Every rc enthusiast knows want your content means
Much appreciated.
Might be off topic but you sound like Dave Chapelle 😅👌
I have been told that a few times. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Dave of RC Patrol yep!
So your soft grippy tires, are now hard and stiff??? Hows the grip in comparison
Sweet ! Thanks dude !
Thanks for watching!
Nice video. Thanks man!
Awesome video !! Do you have to sand paper the tires and wash them off with alcohol ?
I did the sandpaper and alchohol to make sure the tape sticks to the tire over time. A clean surface is always better when applying tapes and adhesives. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend!
Dave of RC Patrol Ok, also I watched most of the videos on RUclips on how to take the tires off of the rims . What is the best way to do it without warping the wheel or destroying the tire/foam ?
That is a tough one. I have tried a heat gun as well as boiling water. I
managed to save the foams as they were closed cel foams. The
wheels...depending upon what kind they are is a different story. Some
have had success...some have failed with boiling water...mine came out
ok..just be careful and wear gloves.
Dave of RC Patrol Well I usually only run Proline and Traxxas rims on my trucks . Will they be ok ?
They should be fine. Just be careful and don't leave them boiling too
long. It takes some patience and time. I did them one side at a time and
cooled in between.
Nice job. 🏁👌👍❤🔥
Thank you very much Tank!
Great great stuff man
Good job man, surely you would think by now proline would have sorted this one way or another.
They have they sell belted tires
Thanks Bro.. I better do that soon.. My tires about to pop off the car!!!
+JJ Villy Indeed, been working good for me. I have had to balance a set before but other than that. Good deal. :) Thanks for watching!
How many laps/layers of tape is needed?
I used two layers. Keep it pretty even. One could work as well, but I went with two cause I do run 6s on some of the rigs.
Dave, how many layers of tape do you put down?
Depends on the power of the Rig. 1-2 rolls gets the job done. I have done 3 wraps on some street tires for a 6s Summit. Still got them around now. Thanks for watching!
tks good video i dont know why proline doesn't do nothing about it
+Rafael Rosales I look at it like this...Everyone is not running 3s and ballooning as shown in the video. For some they will never experience this matter. So for those of us that want more than the tire can handle...there are other options...or...methods as shown in my vid. :) Grip wise, design wise...Pro-Line is doing their job.
Thanks for the tip!
Your welcome! Thanks for viewing and commenting! Have a good day!
nice vid thx for the help IV got a rustler i can't even run bcs tires balloon and when they shred so does the a arm shock and body
I know the feeling oh too well. That's why my Rustler sits on taped
tires as of now. The vibration and stretching of the tire was causing
the same problems as you stated. Works like a charm now. Thanks for
commenting and viewing my friend. Enjoy that Rustler as well, one of my
favorite rigs!
Dave of RC Patrol oh yeah they are fun IV got it lowered and all kinds of stuff it's hard to afford tires and wheels tho IV got a sidewinder 3 and 100,000 rpm castle 4 pole
Sounds like fun! I love Castle Systems! Always a pleasure!
what wheels and tires u running
Thanks you too
I have a traxxas rustler vxl running on a 3s with some rock crawler tire’s and whenever they ballon it’s like one of them old cds
Yes indeed, I bet it does! LOL. Looks wild and crazy! My Yeti use to do that before I put some firmer foams in the tires. Like pancakes! LOL
Hi, was wondering if i could do this with my set of Jconcepts Scorpios they were Premounted though.
Premounts would take some work, best to try this technique on tires you are mounting. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend.
Thanks for getting back to me and no problem man.
INdeed! Have a good day!
you too
good stuff...all you gotta do afterwards is make sure to balance your wheels...notice once he finished and was hitting the throttle that the wheel was pulling and wobbling...good info tho man!
Thanks for viewing and commenting. Want to see some real wobble. Try
driving on non taped tires under power..lol. There you will wobble, lose
control, and crash..LOL.
I will have to try this trick with my truggy 4.0 Tires.
Dave of RC Patrol did you use glue on the tires to install them to the wheel?
No glue, the wheels used are Pro-Line Racing beadlocks for SC trucks. Thanks for watching!
Dave of RC Patrol thanks for the info do you think these wheels handle 4s lipo?
That I have tried onroad only on 4s. They held up on-road, but I have not tried 4s on these wheels offroad as of yet. With the taping, they don't stretch much at all so I would say yes...but I am not 100% sure on 4s.
Dave of RC Patrol thanks and keep up the good work !
Thank you very much! I've got more content coming real soon. Thanks for watching! Have a good day!
Great tip!
Ice done that in the passed. Work perfect. But now for my Xmaxx, if have to buy everything separate, then worry about the gluing
Have you made a video of that running?
