Shame about the tragic end..... but that ripped haha. It wasn't that bad stock either! I got a New Bright up. to 50mph a few years back, it's fun making toys go fast haha
I found myself in a delema like this just before Christmas. My Grandson wanted a Slash and being 5 years old, I was not eager to blow large money on a 5 year old. The RC Shop I do business with gave me a snow blower just before Christmas. I told them after I fixed and sold it, more than likely they would end up getting the money I made from selling it. Two days before Christmas the snowblower sold and I ended up buying him the 1/16 scale Slash. I enclosed a note from Santa telling him he was only allowed to run his Slash with Dad, mom, or Grandpa until he was older. He was elated and my daughter a bit miffed I spent that much on him. Hey, it was Christmas!
Should of found the pre runner it actually has 4 link and you could upgrade to real shocks . If I ever get to it I feel like even most of the suspension and axles will be upgraded to a one off
@Yourlocaltankfrom1974 traxxas 1/16 starts around $180. Losi mini's start around $140. Both have lasted me years & have gotten more upgrades than theyre worth. The 1/16 goes 63mph now. Amazing products
WL Toys are actually great introductory kids RCs. They don't typically break unless you over power them and slam into a speed bump... and then throw them.
In 2014 I took a newbright rc crawler and installed 2 axial xr10 motors an esc. futaba rx/tx used a mini hitec servo and was able to put proline flat irons on the stock wheels. Ended up being a fun truck for mud and creek bashing. Cool video I love seeing these builds
Honestly, that's probably the best toy grade I've seen! Looks like it has variable throttle and steering (which is better than 99% of toy grades) and has cool lights!
nah they just fake out people like this youtuber with the controller that looks proportional but is still not really proportional full left or right only lol
I have done the same thing to a toy grade RC from Kmart years ago , the process of making em faster with hobby grade electronics is fun but yep, they don't last long 😆
My dad drove a Tamiya Hornet and I would tag along when I was about 6 or 7 years old. Redeemable quality of a nimh pack is a free “trainer mode” when it starts dying near the end of the session. He grew away from the hobby while raising my three younger siblings and me, and about ten years later I ended up fixing up the Hornet, running a 19T motor in it, modifying it again with a 17T arrma motor, and bringing it with me to college along with my Axial Yeti and his Touareg. Now my girlfriend drives the Hornet when I rip the Yeti and the Touareg is a more casual driving rig. The Hornet at 17turns is way overpowered but still the most reliable of the three. It’s so cool that it’s still kicking. Quality kits pay dividends, for anyone looking for a gift for their kid. Letting them run your rig when the battery dies down is a great option compared to a cheap walmart toy-grade thing, and if they want something like an RC car and you’re not in the hobby, it could be a nice bonding experience.
I still own my favourite childhood rc car. A Toyota Land cruiser FJ40 from 1981. It already had a 2-speed gearbox, lights, and a winch. I loved it. I have been thinking about upgrading it but I am afraid to ruin it.
Things got bad for big box stores like Walmart and K-Mart when RC companies like Tyco disappeared. The grasshopper and Lobo were great cars from the 80's and 90's.
@@disciplinerc I missed out on those days. Mom couldn't afford those toys so I'd play with friends and cousins rc cars. I just got my first hobby grade RC ( Traxxas Rustler VXL Ultimate) for Christmas. Looking for upgrades.
@@disciplinerc hey man I appreciate it. I've had the X Mods from Radio Shack but nothing serious. Now I'm going to get the new crawler bronco from Traxxas on my next check.
The lights are cool. It actually preformed ok. I cant believe you actually broke it down and upgraded it. Amazing effort on your part. It still jams on 3 wheels. Great job.
The best “hobby grade” car Walmart stocks in store, in my opinion is is one behind your head at 0:52. It’s that little jeep on the top shelf. It does about 20 miles an hour, and has fully proportional throttle and steering, as well as lights!
I've done stuff like this to toy grade cars since I was a kid....now, they would strip gears, burn off tires you couldn't get replacements for, and all kinds of stuff, but it never stopped me! Now I've been building full sized stuff for 15 years. You have to start somewhere. 😌
@linerc You can only ever do what you can. The fact that you made this video shows you are definitely somebody who when life give you lemons, you make lemonade. If the Walmart car is all you can afford right now, way to make it pay your bills! I still mess with RC cars, including old Tyco, Nikko, and Radio Shack (re-badged Nikko) ones. It's STILL fun. Some of the best builds ever were those 1/6 scale New Bright cars they had in Walmart back in the late 2000's. You could make those into BEAUTIFUL scale rides, and this was long before everybody was into rock crawlers and all the scale accessories weren't all over the place like now. You have the right attitude, man. Wish you the best.
My first official rc was from radio shack. It was a black 4x4 truck, my second was a giant f450 with swappable wheels to mat tracks also RS. Those were the best toy grade rc' I have ever seen. It got me into hobby grade. Thankfully they started making crawlers and then trail trucks when I was finally able to get my first new rc. My first new hobby grade was the AX10 kit.
Yeah I had a couple RCs from Radio shack too they were pretty good for the time, they had friction shocks and proportional controls, I crashed one and broke it and my dad took me to the local hobby shop to see if anyone there could help us fix it. There wasn't a way to fix mine, sadly. But I did get to rip a guy's gold pan buggy around and watch him jump it and I was hooked. Dad had no idea how costly that LHS trip would prove to be over the course of my childhood. 😂
Nice! I guess we are "dating our self here" but yeah my first was also from Radio Shack. Oh gone are the days of running to your local electronics store with everything from resisters to men's razors now it's all shipped to you. I remember my cousin ordered an actual hobby grade one fromw then I believe it was the grass hopper and at the time was the fastest rc I had ever seen (probably only 25- 30mpg but it was super fun). I remember rushing home from school to play with it before he got off work that was in the mid 80's so it was all brushed and nicad batteries that lasted 5 min and took 5 hours to charge so I was able to get in a run before he got home.
If I was a kid & was given one of those I'd be bursting with joy.! That thing's awesome for a toy.!!! 👍 👍 👍 I remember being given a red Nikko buggy that looked like a Grasshopper & I was super happy... For 5 minutes, then the 8 AA batteries went dead... I ran in & grabbed another pack... The last pack... Aaaaannnd you can see where this is going. My parents went & got me some rechargeable batteries & a charger but as this was the mid 80's they took about 8 hours to charge & lasted about 3 minutes.! Sigh..... Then the gearbox went after a week or so & maybe 10 short runs.. We went back to Toys R us but they only had a couple of RCs in stock so I ended up with a Group C Le Mans style car that needed a perfectly smooth surface to run on... Our house was fully carpeted.!.. It couldn't even run on the driveway because my Dad put ripples in the concrete. The road was tar & gravel, the paths were wonky flagstones.... Siiiigghhhh... 😢 😢 I'm still traumatized... (maybe that's why I overcompensate nowadays by trying to cram 6 or 8S into every RC I own).?? I ended up taking it apart & pulled all the parts out... I made myself a little RC boat from a pop bottle, a pop can & BluTack which was far more durable & fun than anything Nikko made in the 80s.!
The buggy you described kinda sounds like the Nikko Turbo Panther that was released in 1986 from what I remember. They were pretty cool little buggies. And like you said, the worst thing about em was that the batteries didn't last long no time.
Crazy you had diffs for that. I will work hard a guessing those diffs by the end of the day lol. That rc car for a kid though is quick. I would of loved that as a kid. My friend had the tyco bandit and i was jealous so my rc truck was a rc10gt team associated. Looking back it was so funny . Then they had the rc10gt nitro conversion that kit sucked . The chain always jumped on the diff it was chain driven. The elctric version was way better the dogbones kept falling out it blew.
I literally went thru walmart recently doing exactly this. Went to a local pawn shop. Spent 80 bucks, bought 3 Traxxas RCs, used. Half the stuff was broken on them but I was able to Frankenstein together 2 working Slashes.
This video reminded me of when I used to do this as a kid. Whenever my parents would get me a radio controlled car I was always taking it apart trying to make it go faster
I haven't seen the 24th scale big time muscle cars in years, we used to modify them buy wiring in a 4th battery and shaving out the steering for better angle. Good speed, good handling, enough power for jumps, love em.
My son had the one at 0:44, I think I enjoyed bouncing that thing around the house more than he did. Little homie still isn’t allowed to touch my brushless rustler 4x4 build 😂
I had done a similar conversation on a car found at Goodwill. Had a broken stud on one of the wheel knuckles like what happened to your car when you crashed it. A well placed screw solved the problem. The screw replaced the stud.
Alternative for those watching getting ideas. You can get a Panda Tetra X1 from A Main hobbies from $80-100 depending on the color you want. 25 more dollars for a more common platform and more controls. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
You could have used 2 long(ish) screws to replace the plastic pins that broke on that back wheel! Lil thought for future fixes in other videos.. overall great video tho keep it up!
That looks really cool! I have the Power Craze Dune 24 and it’s a great little car for running around the house. Super fast for it’s size if you have the space to let it run (I take it on my street for that). I got a 2 year Walmart warranty on it for $3 in case it breaks.
For the 55 bucks, the Monster Jam Grave Digger is a good durable toy. No more New Bright junk. I bought one for my 3 year old grandson who already loves cars and this is his first RC. I thought he'd be a bit young, but I was wrong. He took right to it. It has a gyro in it so it can pull front and rear wheel stands and can run while in the wheelies. For 60 dollars? The whole family was playing with it and just loved it. Papa Dan was the hero yesterday. The Chinese are really giving Red Cat and Traxxas a run for their money.
As a kid i never had anreal "hobby" Rc car but i would take the motors out and swap them with high end hobby motors. The problem was the steering was not reponsive enough for the faster speeds.
I'm actually impressed with the setup on that for what it is. If it wasn't for that suspension lol but for 50 bucks not bad. Usually they have a nice body and they're awful inside.
I remember when I was a kid niko made a half real rc it was 27mhz radio a 540 brushed moter and proportional steering that was almost shaped like a servo. I swapped most of it to real hobby grade parts
Hey my friend I was watching your video and I said I don't know if I should subscribe to your channel, but when you said choppy choppy I said this guy is on the money and your passion for R/C cars and trucks, so I subscribed to your channel So I'll be liken your videos and telling my r/c buddies about your channel, thanks your friendly neighborhood Doorman william from NYC forgettaboutit 👊 ✌️
WOW MAN VERY FUN RC TOY GRADE!!! DUDE YOU ARE THE ONLY RUclipsR WHO REVIEWED THIS THING, NOW I KNOW HOW GOOD IT IS STOCK OUT OF THE BOX!! I HAVE SEEN THIS AT WALMART MANY TIMES, AND THOUGHT I WISHED TO SEE A RUclipsR UNBOXING AND TESTING IT!!! AND FINALLY YOU DID IT!!! I STILL THINK IT IS WORTH $50 RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX WITHOUT EXTREME UPGRADING WHEN COMPARED TO OTHER CHEAP TOY GRADE RC CARS WHICH ARE OVER $60 IN AMAZON AS WELL. ✅💯😉😎
The Monster Jam RC car with the super soft tires is actually really fun, faster than pretty much any of these other cars, and extremely lightweight and durable. My son and I have been playing with it for over year already. We drive it outside in the street, on grass and dirt. It is rechargeable and the battery holds a charge for a good amount of driving fun. Another really fun car is the RC Drifter at Costco. For $20, it is an awesome, super fun little car, but the plastic gear that meshes with the metal gear on the motor shaft doesn't last long. Still, it costs less than replacing the wheels on a Traxxas.
Always wanted to do something like this. I’m glad I watched this to see exactly how fast it would break😂. Little cars going stupid fast is one of my favorite things
Yep I got a green buggy from walmart recently, I bought some better and bigger tires for it, threw them on and the buggy was ripping and doing donuts....until the rear wheel broke off lol
I have the car and I personally love it and a button on the controller makes it go faster and gets it to 20mph stock I kept mine stock since it works good enough
I just did something similar - my wife bought me a Spin-master Batmobile for Father’s Day. The model is beautiful but slow. It runs on a 3v 130 motor but hey, it’s a toy. So I had the bright idea of breaking in and installing a high RPM 130 motor typically used for Tamiya mini 4wd cars. Fast forward about 6 hours - the upgrade motor is installed, the resistor and wires are soldered perfectly. I turn it on and…NOTHING. I manually spun the tires with full throttle and the wheels started spinning insanely fast. I set the car on the ground and it stopped. Lesson learned….torque is needed, not high rpm’s. 3v won’t get much moving fast. Yes, even a FAIL can be fun. The car wheels spin super fast when you hold it tho!
UPDATE: I changed the motor again, this time to a Tamiya mini 4wd Torque Tuned 2 motor. Ok! Now the toy Batmobile zips across the parking lot and looks like a real RC instead of a kids toy! Success!!!
I have one and it is a fun rig. Just don't jump it too high. My friends and I racing them. If you want the tires to come of you have to glue the screw.
Bought the exact power craze model twice within 2 days from Wallmart. And every single time me and my son used it just on flat ground one or more of the super feeble suspension setups broke in itself. Its such a low quality plastic setup there is no way it won't break while using the car. I had to superglue and whatnot that thing after every single use. Within minutes usually. And the 2 batteries died within 3 days and only lasted for about 3min each. This car had so much potential with the look, lights, 4x4 and speed. But the material can't hold up to it in the slightest! 60 CAD wasted in no time. That lead me to buying an actual hobby grade rc car for my son. Only 110 CAD on Amazon and that thing takes abuse for several weeks now and still nothing broken. Also worked perfectly fine in snow and rain. Highly recommend the Haiboxing Hailstorm 1/18 Rc car for little kids and others.
That's still not a bad toy grade RC car from Walmart those stock it's pretty good with a lipo battery not bad. If you built a really nice hard pack dirt short course that wide enough and big enough to actually race on these would be great for little kids to bash and have fun
More upgradeable than I thought. That was really cool. Very disappointed it didn't last. Would have liked to see you get more fun out of it but it was awesome while it lasted
0:59 I got nearly 1M views with one of them puppies haha...
right... I'll carry on watching now

It's all about the process, even in the failures 👌
I just thought about doing the same thing with an Audi R8 that I found on etsy.
I thought about making a toy RC car not suck, but then I realized they cost more than a lot of the Banggood specials that are a lot better

Thanks my dude!! Glad to have you along for the ride! 😁
When I was a kid I had a Radio Shack Audi RC that I modified to fit a 540 motor. It was a rocket until the plastic diff exploded.
What a cool little project! Loved to do something like that back in the days too. 👍
I think I'll be making another trip 😉
I have a Slash 4x4 vxl and I usually break it before the 3s lipo is depleted! Lol😢
Story of my life too 😂
That looks really cool!
Looks like a wl toys transmitter
As a kid i never had anreal "hobby" Rc car but i would take the motors out and swap them with high end hobby motors. The problem was the steering was not reponsive enough for the faster speeds.
I'm actually impressed with the setup on that for what it is. If it wasn't for that suspension lol but for 50 bucks not bad. Usually they have a nice body and they're awful inside.
Totally agree dude 👌
I remember when I was a kid niko made a half real rc it was 27mhz radio a 540 brushed moter and proportional steering that was almost shaped like a servo. I swapped most of it to real hobby grade parts
Appreciate the time you put in regardless bro!
Thx dude! Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. But if you can laugh about it all, then it's a win in my books 😂
Hey my friend I was watching your video and I said I don't know if I should subscribe to your channel, but when you said choppy choppy I said this guy is on the money and your passion for R/C cars and trucks, so I subscribed to your channel
So I'll be liken your videos and telling my r/c buddies about your channel, thanks your friendly neighborhood Doorman william from NYC forgettaboutit 👊 ✌️
Nice dude!! Just catching up on comments. Thanks for spreading the word my good sir! More to come this year, gonna be a banger!! 🤘😎🤘
i love these type of videos. awesome seeing the minimal amount of money spent, even if it does kind of fail. subbed!
Sweet!! Thanks for coming along for the adventure 👍😎
The yellow forza is actually realy goo they go 30mph out the box
Great vid and great upgrades! Come on people make sure you are subbed as the effort that goes into these vids is insane! Cheers Bro this was EPIC!
Aw shucks 🥹 you're too kind my guy!! Can't wait to get up to some shenanigans next week 😀
It's fun to try n upgrade them to see how long they will pay. Surprise! Not long. Kind of miss messing around with these. Been awhile.
Cool little RC and great upgrades
Alot of work for not alot of play 😂
Very entertaining!
Thank you good sir 😁👍
After owning several $500 RC cars. It’s scary how really good RC cars have come
I totally agree bro 👍
Yeah it's pretty cool stock, kinda felt bad ripping it apart
@@disciplinerc Hehe yeah man
You can't get parts ,so it's toy grade
Yea I've had a few of those exact same ones(without mods) and those plastic pins keeping the wheels straight break super easy
The mini power craze cars are great so I see potential in this
The Monster Jam RC car with the super soft tires is actually really fun, faster than pretty much any of these other cars, and extremely lightweight and durable.
Thanks for those tips 👍 I think I'll be doing this segment more in 2024, I may already have something on the bench 🤫
Who watching in 2024
Always wanted to do something like this. I’m glad I watched this to see exactly how fast it would break😂. Little cars going stupid fast is one of my favorite things
it wasnt for nothing, we learned that with enough time and money anything can be disappointing. jaha
Yes, yes indeed 😅👍
I love the effort. Great video man!
🙏🏻🙏🏻
I enjoyed the video, but you had way too many GD words. Please see if you can clean up your talking so I can enjoy watching again.
Noted!
Yep I got a green buggy from walmart recently, I bought some better and bigger tires for it, threw them on and the buggy was ripping and doing donuts....until the rear wheel broke off lol
Drill out bottom hub n studs with a micro bit use long screws from a busted servo housing. Use stud as a sleeve n screw it to it.
That's a good idea!! It's kinda too far gone at this point though with all the throwing and crying 😅
I have the car and I personally love it and a button on the controller makes it go faster and gets it to 20mph stock I kept mine stock since it works good enough
Coolest rc vid I've seen in awhile. Awesome shit bro!
Thx bro!
I love how you gave her the ol' Talbot when she broke 😂😂 "its getting it now!!"
🤘😂
You should have sheared off all the studs and put a self tapping screw through the bottom to make it stronger
Success!!!
You put in just the right amount of effort to make it worthwhile. Body & lights are pretty cool .
Thx dude! It seemed to have the right bones for it, but just abit too weak for that power 😅
The tires look exactly like a slash 4x4
I have one and it is a fun rig. Just don't jump it too high. My friends and I racing them. If you want the tires to come of you have to glue the screw.
Haha nice!! Wondering about finding another for round 2 🤔
That was crazy, man.
Yea, that was cool. I've always wanted to try the same thing. looks like others have wanted to do it too.
My 4s Arrma Outcast has a plastic center driveshaft and plastic differential ring gears....
Power craze rc cars are one of the best toy grade cars to start with imo
More upgradeable than I thought. That was really cool. Very disappointed it didn't last. Would have liked to see you get more fun out of it but it was awesome while it lasted
Boy, you gave that thing some JUICE!
i admit i like this truck as is, i'd modify the cab to fit a go pro just for kicks.
so if i wanted to get a friend that exact one walmart may have it?
Yes, they still stock them regularly
at 0:53 the brown boxed Safari Racer ones are amazing they have basically Full hobby grade features
