      @@rbw7556 Not quite.
      Bleeding is when the audio from another instrument is coming into a spot mic.
      See those two mics on the upper left? They're place over the Toms.
      Ideally, each mic will only capture the sound of the Tom upon which they're set - but both mics are actually gonna capture a bit of the other Tom next to it. And a little bit of all the other drums in the kit - even cymbals.
      The amount of sound from an off-axis source (ie a sound you DON'T intend to be the primary signal captured by a mic) is called bleed.
      It won't be super loud in the recording, and there are methods audio engineers can use to minimize bleed. But yeah, this mixing is stellar.
      You may not immediately appreciate it, but this is some VERY good work.

    More perhaps the 60s sound, more specifically the Ringo sound, but the 1970s didn't really mute their drums like this, or at least not as often nor to this extent. In fact, it was the 1970s that took off all the cloth lining after the 1960s. It was just the careful and subtle mic placing on the drums that gave the drums that soft sound thus to be as equal to the mix as possible. It wasn't until the gated reverb sound of the 1980s where it was clear that people wanted big bombastic drums that could fill an arena.
    Also a factor was the tightening of the heads. Tighter heads allow for a quicker and shorter hit with very little ring.

    • @JakeReedmusic
      @JakeReedmusic  3 года назад +3

      There's no hard and fast line with drum sounds between decades haha! I just called it this because it's more 70s inspired than anything ... not literally claiming this was the only drum sound to exist in the 70s. There are so many incredible and varied drum sounds from each decade that all existed concurrently. Think of Motown, Muscle Shoals, Stax, The Wrecking Crew, The Beatles, Blue Note, and early Zeppelin all making classic recordings in the 60s - all with their own unique drum sounds! Still blows my mind.
