We just uploaded a free in depth audio mixing video about our Silk Sonic drum sound here: artofdrumming.com/courses/mixing-iconic-drum-sounds Have fun checking out how Pascal mixed those retro drums.
Tell you one thing: when Anderson stops dancing, goes over behind the kit, they turn the machine off, and he plays some real drums, Silk Sonic gets about 100% better.
@@Baribrotzer Machine? I’ve seen that APaak uses it in his live shows with Free Nationals, but in Silk Sonic, Bruno’s brother Eric plays drums live, with what looks to be the same type setup here, like what Paak uses.
Pascal is so versatile! What a drummer. Truly a chameleon with his playing. He just keeps it so true to the original with everything you guys do. Amazing!
This was a great watch, thank you for taking the time to make this video. The musicianship on AEWSS blew me away, it's thrilling to see what magic can happen when you get gifted musicians in a room together jamming. I'm still in awe that .Paak lay just one take on the drums for Leave The Door Open.
Ever since I was 17, which would have been '94/'95, I've been deeply in love 1970s drum sounds. Especially the sound of disco drums. I've been recording music at home since then but it's only been for the past few years that I've had access to those types of drum sounds. I farmed the sounds from a killer local Kalamazoo, MI player named Brad Frank (has a RUclips channel) with entirely vintage drums, cymbals, hardware, mics and pre-amps. He gave me bunch of dynamic levels on each drum and cymbal, with and without towels on the drums. I play them on a Launchpad Pro with my right hand while I play chord changes with my left. I can lay down 32 bars of that and let it repeat, pick up a guitar or have a quick seat at the keys and have all sorts of fun.
Super! the versatility of this channel is outstanding! For people like me that loves music in general since 70's R&B tunes until a extreme Metal, is a blessing! Thank you guys!
Great video and great choice of topic! .Paak’s been around doing his thing for quite some time and deserves to have his drum sound celebrated like this. Spot on, guys! One cool think about An Evening With Silk Sonic, that I learned recently, is that Anderson .Paak is credited as drum player in 8 out of 9 songs. For “Smokin Out The Window” him and Bruno chose to bring in the amazing Homer Steinweiss (Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Lee Fields, Mark Ronson etc.) for recording the drum part. I absolutely love Homer’s playing. Both, Anderson .Paak and Homer Steinweiss, got to be two of the most skilled smooth-funky drummers in the world. Talk about silk sonic, indeed!
clicked on the video hoping id read emails or do something while it played background, but it was so interesting and well edited I couldn't take my eyes off. guess I really like them drums huh, great great video! silk sonic rocks
One Yes video/the evolution of the Bruford snare drum sound; three videos for the different drum sound(s) he used while in Crimson; one for UK’s Roto Tom glory; and even one for Earthworks’ electronic kit/later acoustic kit.
those old ludwig sets are just amazing. really nice video, also the mic-choices for the kick drum are cool, gotta try that on my next recording session
That's the sound of drums accompanying music. Am I the only one that always wanted this sound in music? I have proof of music that I've made in the 90s, 2000s, and 2010s that sounds like this. Always. We have Vulfpeck and others doing this too. Was I always right by clutching to the sound, and now the world is catching up to my taste? I hope!
Man, all that muffling and dry cymbals make it sound so smooth and creamy with the mix. My first kit was a Ludwig and I just love those colors on your the kit! The clean and simple playing also makes it sound smooth. Nice vid 👍
Amazingly smooth sound. My request for a future video(s) is Nick Mason. Any song would be great, but my personal recommendation is Time as he is the heartbeat and timekeeper of Pink Floyd.
It’s easy to apply, Kevin Parker does it well for Tame Impala, muted, less microphones, good compression and eq, has to groove though because muted drums won’t sound good without a deep Pocket. Can’t rely on decay and resonance to fill in the blanks, precision is a must!
We already filmed it but it‘s not uploaded yet. Post production will be done this week so you will be able to check out the mixing video by the end of the week 👍🏻
Yes I was thinking about that snare sound on Two princes. It was a Jarrah ply 14x4.5 Brady snare. Chad Smith used a Brady Jarrah 14x5.5 for Give It Away and ArtOfDrumming cover had a Tama SLP Dynamic Bronze 14x4.5 snare, and it sounded great.
I know you guys already have done nirvana but I would love to hear "In utero" drum sound. It's the most "nirvana" drum sound there is. 16" deep mounted tom, extra deep snare and 2 huge crashes

I have a request a video on the drum sound of black sabbath's first album.
Could you guys do a video on Petar Janjic’s sound in Cory Wong’s band?

Well done guys, your videos are truly worth watching, and Pascal is sooooo versatile. Great!
Paak is one of the coolest modern mainstream drummers
totally agree

Wasn't JD Beck the album's drummer?
@@isaacperez22 i think he just did Skate
It's incredible what you guys achieve in these videos. Didn't expect Anderson Paak but I love it
😊 thanks 🙏

That's nearly identical. Once again, as always, incredible job from you guys hands up to you.
This retro-sounding style of drums is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful.
anderson paak , by far one of the most talented and grooviest drummers of the 21st century. what an awesome sounding ludwig here !
after recreating the sounds.. can't wait for the full cover as usual..!!
thank you!
Can we appreciated that 19” Kerope for a moment?! That thing sounds amazing!
🙌
I’m sold!
Silk Sonic’s “ Leave the Door Open” has also got that Motown vibe/ motif.
Without that dude with the glasses (Pascal) we’re all doomed to fail at duplicating this funky masterpiece.
👍🏼Great playing.

Love the production quality of these videos! Everytime I watch something on this channel I learn something new. Thanks!
Honestly this kit sounds better then even what’s on their albums

You guys are the absolute best in the business for drum tones
Thanks 🙏
Der Sound ist wahnsinnig nah am Original. Ich bin wirklich beeindruckt.
Großes Tennis 👌🏻👍🏻💪🏻
Love the "wurst" mic. A trick used in our studio quite a bit! Y'all are as inspiring as you're entertaining!
Lol, I didn't get it till I read your comment. Danke!
Gotta love those old 421's and 441's. Great playing and tones too, thanks a bunch!
Once again- y’all hit the spot. Tell the team great job🙌🏻🙌🏻
the ride/crash is so perfect, insane work
The production you put into these videos is so awesome
Great series!! What about recreating the iconic sound of Bill Bruford in the 70s (Yes, King Crimson, UK)?

Love that 60's and 70's drum sound! 🔥

A drum sound I've always loved is Two Princes by The Spin Doctors. That bass-drum sound!
The opening snare fill is iconic too. They should give this a shot

Silk Sonic is incredibly talented! It's refreshing to see you're doing whole vidéo about them. Thank you, and I love your opening clip.

loved this video!
The production on this album is like sipping wine in a robe.
It is superdeluxe expensive production!
Love that sound. Ludwig shells were all mahogany/poplar/mahogany back when this kit was made, right?
Nice take! Wow. 🥰🥰🥰
yeah that was a nice mix there bro, definitely sounds alike
love the red psych kit
i’m in love with Pascal
Lovely tune............Aint no mountain high enuff :)
Great recreation - curious if you had the stems available... how did you isolate the drums to remove them?
I learned about Anderson through Domi & JD Beck! They're all so awesome!

You guys nailed it. Great detailed video with nice pacing and story telling!

Fantastic! One I would like to see and hear Pascal dissect is the song Kissing My Love by Bill Withers with James Gadson on drums.
