My mother never gave me baby food as a child she thought it was nonsense, this is quite a common belief amongst Caribbean people, so is chewing bonrs to get to the marrow and eating fish whole not filleted and using your tongue as you chew isolate the bones. Leads to decent facial development.
BlackMystic 31 it's hard to describe I learnt from watching grandparents but you use your tongue to pin the bones to the roof of your mouth and chew at the side of your mouth then when your ready you remove the bone from mouth
I remember as a kid Dad would over cook steaks all the time, so they were tough and chewy and I would literally spend over and hour trying to chew it to break it down, I reckon that’s why I have dead straight teeth with no crowding and a decent jawline
I would suggest writing a cooking book geared towards the average person in society. A cooking book that has various foods in it and ways of preparations that would allow them to grow a good face. I think that the majority of the people once they understand that they can grow a more beautiful face as well as improve their health with it, they will quickly adopt it into their lifestyles. There are so many young people that do some form of physical activity in their lives because they know sedentary lifestyles are not all that healthy, they also want to look good, which is also a reason for working out.
Not true. The law of Wolfe states that bone remodels itself according to the load it has to bear. It does so continuously throughout our entire lives. The older we become the more difficult it is. Thats why we must start as early as possible with modeling the bone structure to be beautiful. When a mother breast feeds her baby that nipple has evolved in such a particular way that the baby's mouth and throat muscles are trained for proper function later in life. Breast feeding is an exercise for the baby that stresses the bone and muscles in the face and thus from that early stage the bone is already modeling itself to become beautiful. Astronauts in space have to work out all the time to compensate for lack of gravity. If they would not do that their bone structure would deteriorate too much and they would get osteoporosis. When we chew hard on food like our ancestors did we can grow the bone in our face to become more developed. Also there has never been a gene found for beauty, and never a gene for ugliness and they are probably never going to be found. Beauty and ugliness are the result of our environment. A person that has always had sufficient nutrients and absence of chronic stress is always going to be more beautiful than person who has had a lot of chronic stress and lack of nutrients in throughout their life regardless of the genes.
Jerky, thick cuts of steak cooked medium rare, ribs, lightly steamed vegetables, nuts and seeds (after soaking and dehydrating to remove the phytic acid), natural gums like frankincense/mastica/resins, chewing sticks, and ensuring proper Vit A/D/K2 and Calcium is consumed. Literally everything that tastes amazing is going to be thrown out the window, considering soft and tender are typical qualities of great tasting food.
La Rochelle - Fixing chewing habits and tongue posture will absolutely eliminate a lot of the disfigurement in people's faces. While there will be different skull shapes that either make or break attractiveness that cannot be avoided, those people will also have (near) perfect facial harmony within those parameters. So, someone may still be borreby faced, but at least their face will have grown properly.
@itsjustmyopinion My Ortho put headgear braces, twinblock and I wasn't allowed to chew hard food..no nuts or gum. So glad my 10 year old has straight teeth. She had little gaps between her teeth till her molars erupt. I let her chew at least 30 minutes each day.
I ate steak really young. And my mom told I ate this rock hard bread with barely teeth on me. I have pretty long ramuses but I'm still not all that attractive.

Another good thing to note: due to most modern people's posture, the muscles at the back of our necks are over-developed and the ones in the front of our necks are underdeveloped; I would imagine that the muscles in the front (which are just below the jaw) affect jaw growth massively. If your lifestyle involves sitting with your neck forward a lot or you've developed a neck like this from bad habits in the past, I would highly recommend working your neck out by lying at the edge of a bed with your head hanging off, placing a weight on your forehead (I find that a medicine ball works very well) and lifting it up using your neck muscles. You'll properly develop your neck and you can really feel the results.
When those "back of the neck" muscles (splenius capitis?) and erector spinae are overdeveloped, it indicates longstanding tension due to chronic stress, even perhaps gut irritation (picture somebody nursing a belly ache, it's the same position). They also draw the body into that classic "hunched forward" posture. Your suggested exercise probably helps to tone the front-of-neck muscles, but would work best in complement with relaxing the back of the neck. see Kit Laughlin
Yep I train my neck 5 times a week really high reps, and I’ve gained a little over an inch in 4 week. A big neck is a must have for aesthetics and fighters.
It's incredible how much bigger your neck will appear just after one workout. I just do high reps without added weight, but I guess lowers reps with weight would be best as long as you don't hurt your neck in any way.

Robert, hadn't thought of that, I'll consciously observe the shock when eating one. Seems a little far-fetched to me, but if you're worried about it just try out the broccoli. It's pretty good if you make some sort of dip to go with it. I usually blend up some beans with a tomato. Healthy too.
Tiger, I prefer to keep my arteries free from plaque, thank you very much. Have fun with your jaw gains when you're lying in the hospital at 60 after your umpteenth heart attack/stroke. You may get lucky, but why tempt the chances if there's no other benefits anyway?
More raw vegetables. My husband said that he was tired in his mouth when we moved in together; he didn’t know what a salad was XDD I would also like to say that, although I practised Iyengars yoga and ballet, being treated by a chiropractor helped me to achieve a good position and awareness. I also got treated my face and mouth muscles/ joints. I got great relief: no more painful or “sandy” yawns, itchy palate, and a bit less off stuck nose or painful throat. Together with the right position I feel better in my body. Thanks for all of your work and effort, John. I know well it’s a very heavy weight to go against staples and to change them. Corn on the cob is pretty good. The way that you eat it forces your jaw into alignment as you shear the kernals off. This is probably a motion that our ancestors did way more, before the invention of a fork and spoon. Utensils make your jaw go back. Another great "tough" food I like to eat are raw carrots. I can eat those all day. Finally, broccoli and green beans are god tier if you don't over cook them and they have a nice crunch. I make sure to eat as many hard vegetables as I can each day, and the supplement my calorie intake with potatoes, meat, cheese, fruit, etc. Those food groups aren't helping my jaw get exercise, but are still very healthy. I'm trying to cut out bread, cookies and crackers from my diet because it's absolutely awful for my teeth. And I'm a total candy addict, working on that as well. But the more I stick to the basic food groups and stay away from the processed stuff, the better I look. I would like to share with you the fact that I have been mewing for 3 years now. I've pretty much mastered the technique at this point and I am seeing insane results. When I was 17 I got my top wisdom teeth out (didn't have bottom ones) and my face got longer and thinner. With tongue posture, my maxilla has gained width and swung forward and up. This gives my face a shorter, wider, and more forward look. My jaw gains are also amazing. While there's still work to be done, it's ALMOST like I never got those damn teeth pulled. I totally didn't need that procedure as I have a pretty big face, decently straight teeth, and tons of room for those wisdom teeth to come in. They were not impacted and the surgery was unnecessary. At this point I just think about tongue posture and body posture all day long. I can sleep with my tongue on the roof of my mouth now. I'd say it's only a few nights a week that my mouth is open in the morning. I do the chin exercise and the leaning on the wall with your head exercise every day. Dr. Mew, if you would like to see the pictures of my progress, please let me know. The difference is very clear to me. I looked horrible a few years ago and I look much better now.

I wasn't a mouth breather but I felt like my nasal passage were always constricted. Dr. Mew, I feel that a paleo diet is probably the best. Refined sugars and starches are very soft (see mashed potatoes and the like), and milk is very calorie and nutrient dense while obviously just being a liquid. I've been eating a lot of steak lately and this is obviously very chewy. Chicken is very soft. You can still eat chickens in a paleo diet, but I imagine the red meats are generally what our ancestors ate more of, or at least hunter gatherers. Bison and mammoths were mainstays for paleolithic man and the cow is probably the closest option we have to this. Therefore I think a diet of lots of steak, raw veggies like brocolli and carrots, onions, apples, pork chops, less ground meat, etc. is probably best
Raw carrots and oat grain experiment here we go. Oat grain is softer than other raw grains (i.e. spelt) so it seems logical that it would not harm your teeth. My mom told me as a kid that my grandfather used to eat an ear of wheat grain occasionally during harvest seasons like chewing gum.

I completely agree with this video but I have to say that I think the gum chewing route is easier to sell to the general public. Changing diets is insanely difficult as we have tons of global food companies making nearly all softer and softer foods.
+Orthotropics - A difficulty I see with prioritising hard (chewing) foods is that in this modern age, we have chronic digestive issues in society which impacts general health and neurological functioning on many levels. Personally, I think people should just make more of an effort to chew their food before swallowing, improving both orthotropics AND digestion, and eating what they're body agrees with. I like your suggestion of chewing mastica gum after a meal. It'll clean the mouth, strengthen the muscles of the jaw and support Greece's economy all in one fell swoop :)

Nut's & root vegetables ( raw carrots, raw celery, apples ) are the best introduction in modern diet someone can make. As the water content of nuts decreases by them being heated and dehidrated they become harder. ( wallnuts, peanuts , etc ). By eating a raw carrot every day & apples and having salats with big parts of vegetables in them ( meaning stop cutting them so fine ) you decrease the leverage of bite force and make you jaw muscle work harder. Another one try to eat toast bread in the morning ( bread that is dehidrated ). Hard biscuits also. Also by having smaller meals throw the day you engaje in mastication more often and have more total work/per day for jaws muscules. Stop if posible to juice and make blender juices from you fruits and vegetables - it's usefull for digestion and when you are in hurry - but if posible eat them not mecanicaly procceed. ( i myself eat juice in the morning but during the day and evening eat the fruit as it is ) . Avoid eating hard and very long cooked meats ( hard steaks in one big portion size ) as although they are harder to chew - they are hard to digest because of the proteins in them becoming more coagulated. Stick to hard vegetables and hard fruits and nuts.

A couple of years ago, I was eating a very large amount of green vegetables such as lettuce and celery, and this took quite a lot of facial effort to consume. I remember my mouth getting tired during the first few weeks of doing this. This is how our early ancestors ate. 2 million years ago, our ancestors would spend on average 6 hours a day chewing and they had very well developed mouths.

Raw beef tendon, raw beef shanks, seaweeds, especially kelp, wild duck, or any wild game birds, raw sweet potatoes, Granny Smith Apples, raw squid, clams and octopus, raw coconut, straight from the shell, raw sugar cane ( very chewy and fiberous) wild greens such as wild lettuce, Lambs Quarters, Wild Chickweed, stewing hens, ( better taste and texture than typical broiler chickens) and turkey legs cooked medium rare, raw corn on the cob, . All give a good jaw workout. Plus using full force when I chew and chewing with mouth open. This is how people traditionally ate. Plus, chewing a big wad of gum for several hours per day.
I have an allergy apparently of carbohydrates and that basically all the food. So long story short no doctors that i consulted gave me any remedies, hence i always had a runny nose and asthma like symptoms. Finally i took my problems onto my own hands and experrimented with lot of diets and finally found out it was these carbohydrates that I ate everyday, in every meal. ANd now after seeing your videos I understand all that allergic symptoms prompted me to breathe through my mouth 24x7 bcos of the freaking carbs i dumped into my body and now i have crooked teeth and elongated face. Someone did write a book on this. Dr Weston A. Price - Nutrition and Physical degeneration. He was a dentist who travelled to indigenous groups around the world and wondered why certain groups had perfect teeth and saw that they all ate mostly meat in their diet. It’s the most nutrient dense food on earth. I can’t believe Mike Mew hasn’t heard of this.
For anyone else interested in changing their diet, I'd recommend a lot of raw vegetables and nuts, and tough meat (it doesn't have to be jerky, but rarer steak is better for these purposes than more cooked).
I'm pretty sure higher testosterone changes the fat deposition in your face and the rest of your body. Which is probably why we find leaner-looking faces more attractive than chubby ones because on average leaner people have higher testosterone than fat people because bodyfat turns testosterone into estrogen through aromatization.

My parents grew up in Kerala, India which is right below the western Ghats and by the sea (hence extremely fertile), at least 40 years ago, now deforestation. They moved to Doha, Qatar for work and I grew up here with an almost different diet and lifestyle. For eg. They used to walk over 5km to school, I was dropped in a car. After school they used to play I was in front of a computer (sitting). I wore shoes with slightly pointed toes and heavy padding. They walked barefoot or with shoes that had less padding. I grew up in the age of Colas and Pizzas and my parents tried really hard to keep unhealthy food at bay yet we had a lot of access. Anyway, I've noticed a few things: 1. Use of coconuts and coconut oil (healthy fats) 2. They used to eat a lot of hard stuff like dried coconut pieces, sugarcane, raw mangoes often biting the seed, Indian guava, Hog Plum, Cashew Fruit, Dried Tapioca, Boiled Raw banana, Taro, Indian Gooseberry, Yam (healthy food) 3. They walked barefoot a lot as opposed to being driven around (lack of exercise). Check out "The Foot Collective" and "Vivo Barefoot" on Instagram. 4. They mostly had Jaggery, no sugar (blood sugar problem) 5. They mostly resorted to a squatting position in the bathroom as opposed to a modern sitting position (poor posture) 6. The number of people wearing glasses today as opposed to back in the day 7. The number of people in my Qatar school classroom that had wore glasses (10-13 out of 23) as opposed to the number in my Bachelor Degree classroom in Chennai, India (4-5 out of 100. 2 of us from Qatar and UAE respectively). Other hard foods: 1. Sugarcane 2. Carrots 3. Apples 4. Nuts 5. Well Done Steaks My point is, in 2020, everything we do to make life "convenient" shows the grave effect on our health only after 20 or 30 years. Plus, anything that comes in a packet is bad for you. Just my thoughts.

Hey, Doc. I've been chewing hard gum for a few months and the results have been great for my masseter and face (Open mouth chewing). What I've been neglecting for months though is my tongue chewing. Ever since I started working on that my mewing gains have picked up rapidly. Much easier to keep my tongue on the roof of the mouth all the time + extra force. I also expect that due to hypertrophy it has gotten wider/taller which I think helps encourage my inter molar width and palate height even more! cheers
I feel like sitting straight when chewing is incredibly important in training the jaws to work at their maximum strength. There is higher amount of leverage and I feel that it helps with forward growth of the jaws because if someone chews with poor posture, the force of chewing is perhaps transferred throughout the face inadvertently causing downward growth due to the force of chewing affecting the back of the head and not the midface as much. Dear Dr Mike: through your videos I discovered that I have craniofacial distrophy. I've been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and Attention Deficit Disorder and have many difficulties at work. I fear I can be fired at any moment because of the so many errors that I make. My maxilla is long and recessed and my self esteem has always been crushed because of that. I've tried braces, did a couple orthognatic surgeries but I'm still not fully satisfied. I'm in dire need of help. I'm from far away Brazil though. First thing that comes to my mind concerning "hard chewing" is raw vegan diet. When I had raw vegan meals I was chewing endlessly to get the fresh stuff small enough to swallow it (even if it was cut into small pieces). Markus Rothkranz would be maybe interesting to consult on that matter.
Dr. Mew I think you should cover how Snapchat filters automatically shorten the face and make the face wider, with better horizontal lenght and cheekbones. And now theirs an obsession with plastic surgery for people to look like what they look like on these filters! Very relevant. I noticed while playing around with these filters that it made my face so much nicer, upon further examination I noticed what it was doing, it was giving me a " Mewed" version of my face!
Thanks Dr. Mew! Haribo gummy bears work nicely, although they contain citric acid so don't forget to brush it off. I follow Dr. Ray Peat's dietary suggestions, which don't emphasize tough-to-chew foods. It doesn't seem better in the long run to consume irritating foods just to grow the masseters, as those foods enhance the very stress that causes postural degradation which begins the cycle of cranio-facial dystrophy.

My family is from Haiti and all my parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles have perfectly straight teeth. My mom said she used to chew on a low of sugar cane growing up. They also would chew on bones when eating meat to suck the juice out in my culture. So the tough diet makes sense!

I live in Greece, and one of our classic breakfasts and snacks are Κουλουρια and they are quite tough to chew, tougher than bread and they are simple and very cheap. Once I followed your advice on chewing properly, chewing till it becomes mush, I found I chewed *alot* on a single, normal bite I'd take, easily chewing for 30seconds, maybe more, and even then it would still have some small pieces still somewhat chewed. But I also found that now they are more filling. If you chew only for like 5-6 times, maybe 10, and you gloop them down, you can easily eat 4-6 of them and feel like you just ate tasty air. They aren't filling, but they still have loads of carbs, as you can imagine. And guess what else? Chewing them like I did before, without turning them to mush, maybe jaw hurt, not the lower part, but the connection of the jaw and the skull, it'd hurt like mad, it'd hurt like muscle was bear torn, and I kinda think it was tbh. But now the pain is gone, they are more filling and I think alot of diets need to focus on harder food that you *have* to chew more.
When I was a child (I'm 30 now) and my adult teeth started to grow, there wasn't enough space for them in my mouth so they were crooked. A local dentist told my mom to buy me tough gums, so I was chewing them - I think one per day. Now I have VERY straight teeth many years passed since I was chewing these hard gums and I was asked TWICE by different dentists if I was wearing dental braces because my teeth are so straight. My sister on the other hand never wanted to chew anything tough, she was even leaving bread crumbs, eating only the soft part of a sandwich... now her teeth are crooked.
@@Muhammadd-y7l I've since gotten braces. I refused to have the rubber bands though, where they align your bite. I just told them I wanted my teeth straight. I had a slight over bite, so slight only dentist would know about it. Incase you were wondering 2 yrs later👍
I have grown my maseter muscles so sharp in less than 2 months, wen I chewed gum with paper towel, kudos to astrokid for this tip. At first week my jaw muscles were hurting so bad when opening mouth :)) totally worth it
I'm not a specialist as you are, but I suggest beans and nuts. They are all extremelly healthy and tough. Peanuts, beans, Brazilian nuts, etc. Meats can be quite hard to chew as well, depending on how long you cook it.
if beans and nuts are tough they are undercooked or in the case of nuts old and probably rancid, chewy meat is overcooked; all of these things will lead to digestive issues - eating undercooked beans particularly will give you painful trapped wind (Christ why are there so many retarded people on this thread??)

Very interesting - As a child, I could remember eating a lot of soft foods like rice porridge, over cooked soft vegetables, chicken ,and beef stew, but Occasionally, a nice tough pork-chop or steak. My jaw is decent, but I did had to get braces for my crooked teeth and my lower jaw was, and still is, forward protruding(an underbite), and that was never fixed btw. Also I could remember when I was 8-9 yrs old, I felt my teeth getting crooked by the weeks..
Chewing tip: use chewing gum of the Turkish brand Falim. It's hard, sugarless and tasteless. You can reuse it for days because it has no taste but also doesn't taste bad after chewing on it for a few hours. It only has a slightly aromatic smell. Every city with a sizable Turkish neighborhood will have a local supermarket where you won't be able to miss the blue-and-gold package with FALIM in big letters on it. Choose the package without mint leaves, strawberries or the like on it obviously.
Yes, I've been chewing it for the last month and my muscles are showing in my side profile. I noticed if I chew for too long though my temples swell out like golf balls, and I've no idea why.
Im gonna teach my little cousins to chew like adults and advise their parents (my uncles and such) to give them whole foods and nothing soft other than non caloric drinks. Last time I tried to make flatbread it turned out so tough that by the time I was done with it I felt like I gave my chewing muscles a proper workout. I didn't even know it was possible, but it felt just like any other muscle after lifting weights.

Started Mewing December 2018 at age 41. Today, 1 year later, I had someone who sees me daily say that my face is changing, specifically my jaw getting wider and cheekbones. I started with tongue posture in Dec, in February I incorporates chewing hard gum, in April stretches for forward head. I do a little tongue chewing with the gum, but need to do a lot more.
Stopped chewing hard gum and the gains went away. I picked it back up one week ago. My tongue posture is good. I’m nearly 3 years ito to it; no significant changes. I’ve been working on body posture for this same amount of time...change is slow.
You need to look at cranial nerve damage from aluminum, Dr Chris Exley has excellent videos on this. It’s one of the biggest changes in the last 50 years. Our kids are being harmed and this issue needs to be addressed.
I would say eating raw fruits and vegetables whole. Don’t cut them up into slices. Let your teeth do the work. I watch my mom cut up every little thing on my nephews plate. Quit slicing everything up and use your teeth to bite pieces off. Get beef jerky and nuts as a good healthy snack. Granola bars, hard bread, raw whole fruits and vegetables. Teach your children to bite there food properly. My nephew will take the biggest bites which is why my mom cuts his food up. But he needs to be taught to eat properly. It doesn’t help that all of his meals except dinner are in front of the tv which means he’s not learning to eat by watching adults. Plus it’s really distracting and a fight to get him to eat anything at all. About 2 weeks ago my mom and I pick grapes at a friends house. Being the first time I had a real grape I was surprised by the seed in the middle so I was spitting them out. Instead I should having been chewing them and eating them.

There's a guy in a forum that claims that to a certain point chewing gave him good results, masseter hypertrophy and all that, but past this certain point, it ruined his face. What do you think about it, Dr. Mew? "At first i had masseter hypertrophy and was happy with the results so i continued following my hypothesis that since i have long face, chewing could theoretically shorten it since its essentially lower third colliding with rest of the face. However i didnt take into account that midface could be stronger than lower third so the shortening may come from lower third getting smaller. Thats exacly what happened. I continued chewing and with time my lower teeth got pushed further down into my lower third and my lower third overall became shorter and wider. I ended up looking ridiculous. Also, strange cracking npise appeared in my adams apple. Every time i move my head arround my adams apple grinds agains some cartilagge and produces loud noices and mild pain. Thanks chewing."
Don't do anything in too much excess. Mewing is the correct tongue position, so I don't think you can do too much of that, but if you chew gum for too long, you will deplete the fluid between the joints in your jaw (near your ear) and you will start having jaw pain.
Guys, I really need some advice or help. When I was a kid and a teenager, I used to have a beautiful prominent jaw line and chin. I even looked at some of the older photos of me when I was 15yo and 16 yo, and everything was just fine. I had a good facial structure and I was looking normal. At 16yo, I started practicing kickboxing, and due to the nature of the sport, I used to clench hard my lower teeth behind my upper teeth, so that I can take the impact of the punches much better. Combine with the fact that around that age, my breathing problems started to show up, and I started breathing through my mouth all the time. From 17 to 22 yo, I was a video game addict, and due to thousands of hours spent in front of a computer, I have a hunchback now. My head is sticking out forwards. Now, I'm 23 yo and I look nothing like my younger self. My jaw line is non-existent, my lower jaw and chin are very small, my posture is really bad (my neck and head are sticking forward, I look like a turtle), and I have a recessive chin. I look like those small green aliens, big heads and small chins.... Until I've found this youtube channel, I was breathing through my mouth a lot, and my tongue was not resting on the roof of the mouth. My question is, if I start correcting my body posture, and I rest the tongue on the roof of my mouth, will I correct my facial structure? Will I be able to bring my lower jaw/chin forward? Will I be able to look like I used to look when I was 15/16 yo, when I had a normal good facial structure? Seriously, when I took some photos now of me from the sides, and compare them with photos of my younger self (teenage years), I look so different. I look so much uglier now than then! My jaw and chin look like they stopped growing. They look so small.

In my culture they say if a child’s speech is slurred give them some almonds to eat everyday because it strengthens the muscles due to chewing and makes speech clearer.
I also have a question: Do you think that a weak/recessed chin is a means to compensate for forward head posture? Just from my observations, it seems that if someone has a chronic forward head posture, a forward growing face would put more strain on the neck and create more imbalance so instead it creates a flatter face to reduce the moment arm created by gravity. Just a thought.

My mother never gave me baby food as a child she thought it was nonsense, this is quite a common belief amongst Caribbean people, so is chewing bonrs to get to the marrow and eating fish whole not filleted and using your tongue as you chew isolate the bones. Leads to decent facial development.

I would suggest writing a cooking book geared towards the average person in society. A cooking book that has various foods in it and ways of preparations that would allow them to grow a good face. I think that the majority of the people once they understand that they can grow a more beautiful face as well as improve their health with it, they will quickly adopt it into their lifestyles. There are so many young people that do some form of physical activity in their lives because they know sedentary lifestyles are not all that healthy, they also want to look good, which is also a reason for working out.
Not true. The law of Wolfe states that bone remodels itself according to the load it has to bear. It does so continuously throughout our entire lives. The older we become the more difficult it is. Thats why we must start as early as possible with modeling the bone structure to be beautiful. When a mother breast feeds her baby that nipple has evolved in such a particular way that the baby's mouth and throat muscles are trained for proper function later in life. Breast feeding is an exercise for the baby that stresses the bone and muscles in the face and thus from that early stage the bone is already modeling itself to become beautiful. Astronauts in space have to work out all the time to compensate for lack of gravity. If they would not do that their bone structure would deteriorate too much and they would get osteoporosis. When we chew hard on food like our ancestors did we can grow the bone in our face to become more developed. Also there has never been a gene found for beauty, and never a gene for ugliness and they are probably never going to be found. Beauty and ugliness are the result of our environment. A person that has always had sufficient nutrients and absence of chronic stress is always going to be more beautiful than person who has had a lot of chronic stress and lack of nutrients in throughout their life regardless of the genes.

Another good thing to note: due to most modern people's posture, the muscles at the back of our necks are over-developed and the ones in the front of our necks are underdeveloped; I would imagine that the muscles in the front (which are just below the jaw) affect jaw growth massively. If your lifestyle involves sitting with your neck forward a lot or you've developed a neck like this from bad habits in the past, I would highly recommend working your neck out by lying at the edge of a bed with your head hanging off, placing a weight on your forehead (I find that a medicine ball works very well) and lifting it up using your neck muscles. You'll properly develop your neck and you can really feel the results.
When those "back of the neck" muscles (splenius capitis?) and erector spinae are overdeveloped, it indicates longstanding tension due to chronic stress, even perhaps gut irritation (picture somebody nursing a belly ache, it's the same position). They also draw the body into that classic "hunched forward" posture. Your suggested exercise probably helps to tone the front-of-neck muscles, but would work best in complement with relaxing the back of the neck. see Kit Laughlin
Yep I train my neck 5 times a week really high reps, and I’ve gained a little over an inch in 4 week. A big neck is a must have for aesthetics and fighters.

It's incredible how much bigger your neck will appear just after one workout. I just do high reps without added weight, but I guess lowers reps with weight would be best as long as you don't hurt your neck in any way.
Raw carrots, or even better raw broccoli if you're up for it. It is quite the jaw workout.

Robert, hadn't thought of that, I'll consciously observe the shock when eating one. Seems a little far-fetched to me, but if you're worried about it just try out the broccoli. It's pretty good if you make some sort of dip to go with it. I usually blend up some beans with a tomato. Healthy too.

I would also like to say that, although I practised Iyengars yoga and ballet, being treated by a chiropractor helped me to achieve a good position and awareness. I also got treated my face and mouth muscles/ joints. I got great relief: no more painful or “sandy” yawns, itchy palate, and a bit less off stuck nose or painful throat. Together with the right position I feel better in my body.

Corn on the cob is pretty good. The way that you eat it forces your jaw into alignment as you shear the kernals off. This is probably a motion that our ancestors did way more, before the invention of a fork and spoon. Utensils make your jaw go back.
Another great "tough" food I like to eat are raw carrots. I can eat those all day. Finally, broccoli and green beans are god tier if you don't over cook them and they have a nice crunch. I make sure to eat as many hard vegetables as I can each day, and the supplement my calorie intake with potatoes, meat, cheese, fruit, etc. Those food groups aren't helping my jaw get exercise, but are still very healthy. I'm trying to cut out bread, cookies and crackers from my diet because it's absolutely awful for my teeth. And I'm a total candy addict, working on that as well. But the more I stick to the basic food groups and stay away from the processed stuff, the better I look.
I would like to share with you the fact that I have been mewing for 3 years now. I've pretty much mastered the technique at this point and I am seeing insane results. When I was 17 I got my top wisdom teeth out (didn't have bottom ones) and my face got longer and thinner. With tongue posture, my maxilla has gained width and swung forward and up. This gives my face a shorter, wider, and more forward look. My jaw gains are also amazing. While there's still work to be done, it's ALMOST like I never got those damn teeth pulled. I totally didn't need that procedure as I have a pretty big face, decently straight teeth, and tons of room for those wisdom teeth to come in. They were not impacted and the surgery was unnecessary.
At this point I just think about tongue posture and body posture all day long. I can sleep with my tongue on the roof of my mouth now. I'd say it's only a few nights a week that my mouth is open in the morning. I do the chin exercise and the leaning on the wall with your head exercise every day. Dr. Mew, if you would like to see the pictures of my progress, please let me know. The difference is very clear to me. I looked horrible a few years ago and I look much better now.

I wasn't a mouth breather but I felt like my nasal passage were always constricted. Ever since putting my tongue to the roof of my mouth, it has actually made it so much easier to breath through my nose. The airways seemed to have opened up more. Thanks!

I feel that a paleo diet is probably the best. Refined sugars and starches are very soft (see mashed potatoes and the like), and milk is very calorie and nutrient dense while obviously just being a liquid. I've been eating a lot of steak lately and this is obviously very chewy. Chicken is very soft. You can still eat chickens in a paleo diet, but I imagine the red meats are generally what our ancestors ate more of, or at least hunter gatherers. Bison and mammoths were mainstays for paleolithic man and the cow is probably the closest option we have to this. Therefore I think a diet of lots of steak, raw veggies like brocolli and carrots, onions, apples, pork chops, less ground meat, etc. is probably best

Oat grain is softer than other raw grains (i.e. spelt) so it seems logical that it would not harm your teeth.
My mom told me as a kid that my grandfather used to eat an ear of wheat grain occasionally during harvest seasons like chewing gum.

I completely agree with this video but I have to say that I think the gum chewing route is easier to sell to the general public. Changing diets is insanely difficult as we have tons of global food companies making nearly all softer and softer foods.
+Orthotropics - A difficulty I see with prioritising hard (chewing) foods is that in this modern age, we have chronic digestive issues in society which impacts general health and neurological functioning on many levels.
Personally, I think people should just make more of an effort to chew their food before swallowing, improving both orthotropics AND digestion, and eating what they're body agrees with. I like your suggestion of chewing mastica gum after a meal. It'll clean the mouth, strengthen the muscles of the jaw and support Greece's economy all in one fell swoop :)

Nut's & root vegetables ( raw carrots, raw celery, apples ) are the best introduction in modern diet someone can make.
As the water content of nuts decreases by them being heated and dehidrated they become harder. ( wallnuts, peanuts , etc ). By eating a raw carrot every day & apples and having salats with big parts of vegetables in them ( meaning stop cutting them so fine ) you decrease the leverage of bite force and make you jaw muscle work harder. Another one try to eat toast bread in the morning ( bread that is dehidrated ). Hard biscuits also. Also by having smaller meals throw the day you engaje in mastication more often and have more total work/per day for jaws muscules.
Stop if posible to juice and make blender juices from you fruits and vegetables - it's usefull for digestion and when you are in hurry - but if posible eat them not mecanicaly procceed. ( i myself eat juice in the morning but during the day and evening eat the fruit as it is ) . Avoid eating hard and very long cooked meats ( hard steaks in one big portion size ) as although they are harder to chew - they are hard to digest because of the proteins in them becoming more coagulated. Stick to hard vegetables and hard fruits and nuts.

A couple of years ago, I was eating a very large amount of green vegetables such as lettuce and celery, and this took quite a lot of facial effort to consume. I remember my mouth getting tired during the first few weeks of doing this. This is how our early ancestors ate. 2 million years ago, our ancestors would spend on average 6 hours a day chewing and they had very well developed mouths.

Raw beef tendon, raw beef shanks, seaweeds, especially kelp, wild duck, or any wild game birds, raw sweet potatoes, Granny Smith Apples, raw squid, clams and octopus, raw coconut, straight from the shell, raw sugar cane ( very chewy and fiberous) wild greens such as wild lettuce, Lambs Quarters, Wild Chickweed, stewing hens, ( better taste and texture than typical broiler chickens) and turkey legs cooked medium rare, raw corn on the cob, . All give a good jaw workout. Plus using full force when I chew and chewing with mouth open. This is how people traditionally ate.
Plus, chewing a big wad of gum for several hours per day.
I have an allergy apparently of carbohydrates and that basically all the food. So long story short no doctors that i consulted gave me any remedies, hence i always had a runny nose and asthma like symptoms. Finally i took my problems onto my own hands and experrimented with lot of diets and finally found out it was these carbohydrates that I ate everyday, in every meal. ANd now after seeing your videos I understand all that allergic symptoms prompted me to breathe through my mouth 24x7 bcos of the freaking carbs i dumped into my body and now i have crooked teeth and elongated face.

Someone did write a book on this. Dr Weston A. Price - Nutrition and Physical degeneration. He was a dentist who travelled to indigenous groups around the world and wondered why certain groups had perfect teeth and saw that they all ate mostly meat in their diet. It’s the most nutrient dense food on earth. I can’t believe Mike Mew hasn’t heard of this.

For anyone else interested in changing their diet, I'd recommend a lot of raw vegetables and nuts, and tough meat (it doesn't have to be jerky, but rarer steak is better for these purposes than more cooked).
I'm pretty sure higher testosterone changes the fat deposition in your face and the rest of your body. Which is probably why we find leaner-looking faces more attractive than chubby ones because on average leaner people have higher testosterone than fat people because bodyfat turns testosterone into estrogen through aromatization.

Thank you Dr Mew! I’ve been in the dental field 1998 and I have just came across this fascinating I formation from my Brother..
My parents grew up in Kerala, India which is right below the western Ghats and by the sea (hence extremely fertile), at least 40 years ago, now deforestation. They moved to Doha, Qatar for work and I grew up here with an almost different diet and lifestyle. For eg. They used to walk over 5km to school, I was dropped in a car. After school they used to play I was in front of a computer (sitting). I wore shoes with slightly pointed toes and heavy padding. They walked barefoot or with shoes that had less padding. I grew up in the age of Colas and Pizzas and my parents tried really hard to keep unhealthy food at bay yet we had a lot of access.
Anyway, I've noticed a few things:
1. Use of coconuts and coconut oil
(healthy fats)
2. They used to eat a lot of hard stuff like dried coconut pieces, sugarcane, raw mangoes often biting the seed, Indian guava, Hog Plum, Cashew Fruit, Dried Tapioca, Boiled Raw banana, Taro, Indian Gooseberry, Yam (healthy food)
3. They walked barefoot a lot
as opposed to being driven around (lack of exercise). Check out "The Foot Collective" and "Vivo Barefoot" on Instagram.
4. They mostly had Jaggery, no sugar (blood sugar problem)
5. They mostly resorted to a squatting position in the bathroom as opposed to a modern sitting position (poor posture)
6. The number of people wearing glasses today as opposed to back in the day
7. The number of people in my Qatar school classroom that had wore glasses (10-13 out of 23) as opposed to the number in my Bachelor Degree classroom in Chennai, India (4-5 out of 100. 2 of us from Qatar and UAE respectively).
Other hard foods:
1. Sugarcane
2. Carrots
3. Apples
4. Nuts
5. Well Done Steaks
My point is, in 2020, everything we do to make life "convenient" shows the grave effect on our health only after 20 or 30 years. Plus, anything that comes in a packet is bad for you. Just my thoughts.
Very interesting.. This is also how my mother grew up.. Much more activity and a better diet than we have.. Each following generation seems somehow more n more fragile.. Not as hardy at all as the generations before
Hey, Doc. I've been chewing hard gum for a few months and the results have been great for my masseter and face (Open mouth chewing). What I've been neglecting for months though is my tongue chewing. Ever since I started working on that my mewing gains have picked up rapidly. Much easier to keep my tongue on the roof of the mouth all the time + extra force. I also expect that due to hypertrophy it has gotten wider/taller which I think helps encourage my inter molar width and palate height even more!

I feel like sitting straight when chewing is incredibly important in training the jaws to work at their maximum strength. There is higher amount of leverage and I feel that it helps with forward growth of the jaws because if someone chews with poor posture, the force of chewing is perhaps transferred throughout the face inadvertently causing downward growth due to the force of chewing affecting the back of the head and not the midface as much. Something I have been thinking about lately
somehow I doubt it that our ancestors were so strict about having great posture, especially when eating. Although I agree that it is beneficial.
That makes no sense, the jaw muscles work along the same planes doesn’t matter what posture you are in.

Dear Dr Mike: through your videos I discovered that I have craniofacial distrophy. I've been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and Attention Deficit Disorder and have many difficulties at work. I fear I can be fired at any moment because of the so many errors that I make. My maxilla is long and recessed and my self esteem has always been crushed because of that. I've tried braces, did a couple orthognatic surgeries but I'm still not fully satisfied. I'm in dire need of help. I'm from far away Brazil though. First thing that comes to my mind concerning "hard chewing" is raw vegan diet. When I had raw vegan meals I was chewing endlessly to get the fresh stuff small enough to swallow it (even if it was cut into small pieces). Markus Rothkranz would be maybe interesting to consult on that matter.

Dr. Mew I think you should cover how Snapchat filters automatically shorten the face and make the face wider, with better horizontal lenght and cheekbones. And now theirs an obsession with plastic surgery for people to look like what they look like on these filters! Very relevant. I noticed while playing around with these filters that it made my face so much nicer, upon further examination I noticed what it was doing, it was giving me a " Mewed" version of my face!

I follow Dr. Ray Peat's dietary suggestions, which don't emphasize tough-to-chew foods. It doesn't seem better in the long run to consume irritating foods just to grow the masseters, as those foods enhance the very stress that causes postural degradation which begins the cycle of cranio-facial dystrophy.
The dental industry is suing him because if mewing and or that topics was mainstream orthodontists would become nearly obsolete

My family is from Haiti and all my parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles have perfectly straight teeth. My mom said she used to chew on a low of sugar cane growing up. They also would chew on bones when eating meat to suck the juice out in my culture. So the tough diet makes sense!

Dr Mew you really need to check out Ty Bollingers work. He has a massive conference yearly, the greatest doctors and scientists of our time gather there. Your work is a desperately needed piece of the puzzle.
I live in Greece, and one of our classic breakfasts and snacks are Κουλουρια and they are quite tough to chew, tougher than bread and they are simple and very cheap. Once I followed your advice on chewing properly, chewing till it becomes mush, I found I chewed *alot* on a single, normal bite I'd take, easily chewing for 30seconds, maybe more, and even then it would still have some small pieces still somewhat chewed.
But I also found that now they are more filling. If you chew only for like 5-6 times, maybe 10, and you gloop them down, you can easily eat 4-6 of them and feel like you just ate tasty air. They aren't filling, but they still have loads of carbs, as you can imagine.
And guess what else? Chewing them like I did before, without turning them to mush, maybe jaw hurt, not the lower part, but the connection of the jaw and the skull, it'd hurt like mad, it'd hurt like muscle was bear torn, and I kinda think it was tbh. But now the pain is gone, they are more filling and I think alot of diets need to focus on harder food that you *have* to chew more.

When I was a child (I'm 30 now) and my adult teeth started to grow, there wasn't enough space for them in my mouth so they were crooked. A local dentist told my mom to buy me tough gums, so I was chewing them - I think one per day. Now I have VERY straight teeth many years passed since I was chewing these hard gums and I was asked TWICE by different dentists if I was wearing dental braces because my teeth are so straight. My sister on the other hand never wanted to chew anything tough, she was even leaving bread crumbs, eating only the soft part of a sandwich... now her teeth are crooked.

I have grown my maseter muscles so sharp in less than 2 months, wen I chewed gum with paper towel, kudos to astrokid for this tip. At first week my jaw muscles were hurting so bad when opening mouth :)) totally worth it

I'm not a specialist as you are, but I suggest beans and nuts. They are all extremelly healthy and tough. Peanuts, beans, Brazilian nuts, etc.
Meats can be quite hard to chew as well, depending on how long you cook it.
if beans and nuts are tough they are undercooked or in the case of nuts old and probably rancid, chewy meat is overcooked; all of these things will lead to digestive issues - eating undercooked beans particularly will give you painful trapped wind (Christ why are there so many retarded people on this thread??)

Very interesting - As a child, I could remember eating a lot of soft foods like rice porridge, over cooked soft vegetables, chicken ,and beef stew, but Occasionally, a nice tough pork-chop or steak. My jaw is decent, but I did had to get braces for my crooked teeth and my lower jaw was, and still is, forward protruding(an underbite), and that was never fixed btw. Also I could remember when I was 8-9 yrs old, I felt my teeth getting crooked by the weeks..
Chewing tip: use chewing gum of the Turkish brand Falim. It's hard, sugarless and tasteless. You can reuse it for days because it has no taste but also doesn't taste bad after chewing on it for a few hours. It only has a slightly aromatic smell. Every city with a sizable Turkish neighborhood will have a local supermarket where you won't be able to miss the blue-and-gold package with FALIM in big letters on it. Choose the package without mint leaves, strawberries or the like on it obviously.
Yes, I've been chewing it for the last month and my muscles are showing in my side profile. I noticed if I chew for too long though my temples swell out like golf balls, and I've no idea why.

I was with my mouth open when I saw this in my reccomandation I istantly started to mew.
Im gonna teach my little cousins to chew like adults and advise their parents (my uncles and such) to give them whole foods and nothing soft other than non caloric drinks.
So they don't have to endure the BS of a weak and regressive up bringing, that forms flat and regressive/downwards growth of the face caused my modern society.

Orthodontic history shows a link between tooth malocclusion and the popularization of eating utensils like chopsticks and forks so you aren't entirely wrong.
You still can use the fork but don't make too small pieces of your food. Make pieces that you can chew.

Last time I tried to make flatbread it turned out so tough that by the time I was done with it I felt like I gave my chewing muscles a proper workout. I didn't even know it was possible, but it felt just like any other muscle after lifting weights.

I am a dental hygienist for 37 years and my two sons are my perfect examples of one being a mouth breather, and one being a nose breather, and I have changed them both to being nose breathers! Started Mewing December 2018 at age 41. Today, 1 year later, I had someone who sees me daily say that my face is changing, specifically my jaw getting wider and cheekbones. I started with tongue posture in Dec, in February I incorporates chewing hard gum, in April stretches for forward head. I do a little tongue chewing with the gum, but need to do a lot more.
Stopped chewing hard gum and the gains went away. I picked it back up one week ago. My tongue posture is good. I’m nearly 3 years ito to it; no significant changes. I’ve been working on body posture for this same amount of time...change is slow.

You need to look at cranial nerve damage from aluminum, Dr Chris Exley has excellent videos on this. It’s one of the biggest changes in the last 50 years. Our kids are being harmed and this issue needs to be addressed.

I would say eating raw fruits and vegetables whole. Don’t cut them up into slices. Let your teeth do the work. I watch my mom cut up every little thing on my nephews plate. Quit slicing everything up and use your teeth to bite pieces off. Get beef jerky and nuts as a good healthy snack. Granola bars, hard bread, raw whole fruits and vegetables. Teach your children to bite there food properly. My nephew will take the biggest bites which is why my mom cuts his food up. But he needs to be taught to eat properly. It doesn’t help that all of his meals except dinner are in front of the tv which means he’s not learning to eat by watching adults. Plus it’s really distracting and a fight to get him to eat anything at all. About 2 weeks ago my mom and I pick grapes at a friends house. Being the first time I had a real grape I was surprised by the seed in the middle so I was spitting them out. Instead I should having been chewing them and eating them.

For Mad Chewing Exercise: Raw Mastic Gum Resin, very tough.
There's a guy in a forum that claims that to a certain point chewing gave him good results, masseter hypertrophy and all that, but past this certain point, it ruined his face. What do you think about it, Dr. Mew?
"At first i had masseter hypertrophy and was happy with the results so i continued following my hypothesis that since i have long face, chewing could theoretically shorten it since its essentially lower third colliding with rest of the face.
However i didnt take into account that midface could be stronger than lower third so the shortening may come from lower third getting smaller. Thats exacly what happened. I continued chewing and with time my lower teeth got pushed further down into my lower third and my lower third overall became shorter and wider. I ended up looking ridiculous.
Also, strange cracking npise appeared in my adams apple. Every time i move my head arround my adams apple grinds agains some cartilagge and produces loud noices and mild pain.

Don't do anything in too much excess. Mewing is the correct tongue position, so I don't think you can do too much of that, but if you chew gum for too long, you will deplete the fluid between the joints in your jaw (near your ear) and you will start having jaw pain.

Guys, I really need some advice or help. When I was a kid and a teenager, I used to have a beautiful prominent jaw line and chin. I even looked at some of the older photos of me when I was 15yo and 16 yo, and everything was just fine. I had a good facial structure and I was looking normal.
At 16yo, I started practicing kickboxing, and due to the nature of the sport, I used to clench hard my lower teeth behind my upper teeth, so that I can take the impact of the punches much better. Combine with the fact that around that age, my breathing problems started to show up, and I started breathing through my mouth all the time. From 17 to 22 yo, I was a video game addict, and due to thousands of hours spent in front of a computer, I have a hunchback now. My head is sticking out forwards.
Now, I'm 23 yo and I look nothing like my younger self. My jaw line is non-existent, my lower jaw and chin are very small, my posture is really bad (my neck and head are sticking forward, I look like a turtle), and I have a recessive chin. I look like those small green aliens, big heads and small chins....
Until I've found this youtube channel, I was breathing through my mouth a lot, and my tongue was not resting on the roof of the mouth.
My question is, if I start correcting my body posture, and I rest the tongue on the roof of my mouth, will I correct my facial structure? Will I be able to bring my lower jaw/chin forward? Will I be able to look like I used to look when I was 15/16 yo, when I had a normal good facial structure? Seriously, when I took some photos now of me from the sides, and compare them with photos of my younger self (teenage years), I look so different. I look so much uglier now than then! My jaw and chin look like they stopped growing. They look so small.

In my culture they say if a child’s speech is slurred give them some almonds to eat everyday because it strengthens the muscles due to chewing and makes speech clearer.
I also have a question: Do you think that a weak/recessed chin is a means to compensate for forward head posture? Just from my observations, it seems that if someone has a chronic forward head posture, a forward growing face would put more strain on the neck and create more imbalance so instead it creates a flatter face to reduce the moment arm created by gravity. Just a thought.

I have my 12 yr old daughter (the Orthodontist already pulled a lot of her teeth) chewing on a piece of leather from my belt. I do notice improvement in her face after she does it for 15 min or so.
