"We need to stop villianizing nutrients" I'm glad you talked about this topic in this video Because there's this assumption amongst people that all kinds of fats and sugars are bad But that is far from the truth
Yeah, though, with sugars it's a more complex topic. Not necessarily all sugars are bad (Take into account fruit sugars, whose absorption lowers thanks to fiber), but I think the main problem are added sugars in many processed foods. In short: Don't eat too much sweets nor hyper-processed stuff and you'll be mostly fine.
@Chris Clifford yeah, taking the fats out of foods so people would think it's healthier left bad tasting food as a result. What did they do to fix their food products then? Add sugar. Obesity started rising faster.
That "silly kid thing" works, too! I stepped on sidewalk cracks when I was in second grade, and about 30 years later my mother cracked a vertebra from tripping and falling over a friend's dog.
"We need to stop villainizing nutrients" YES! THANK YOU! I'm so tired of seeing people say that it's best to cut out all sugar or fat or carbs or sodum.
It depends on what it actually is, not all sugar is the same and they aren't all handled in the same way in the body. Added sugars and processed sugars are more of the problem than sugars from food like oranges and strawberries. The same can be said for lipids and many other nutrients
@@cedar4539 Your body and diet also gets used to all those crappy processed foods that you will always have these cravings and sometimes never really feel satiated, it's a major problem with obesity in the US due to legalizing bad stuff in foods where majority of countries have banned. Also the unnecessary large portion sized. I also was born and still live in the US so it's not just me following the stereotypes and what not.
@@johnshepherd4299 That's primarily due to the fiber in the fruits that slow sugar absorption. Fruits can be eaten safely by most diabetics, in modest quantities of course, due to this. Both fructose and dextrose are absorbed directly.
6:32 as a person that develops insane amounts of ear wax, theres one funny thing that i have noticed. When i wear over-ear headphones and listen to music for some time, the vibrations from the soundwaves will actually loosen my earwax (and make it more fluidy kinda) and make it automatically fall out of my ear canals. It makes it so much easier to clean my ears in the shower afterwords too.
My aunt has epilepsy and she works in a hospital. She has had several "mini" strokes as well. I think the main thing is her medication and being able to predict when she is going to have a seizure so she can get to a safe place if its necessary.

They're not as insane or ridiculous as the one Christiano Ronaldo used, but there are more subtle jaw trainers, like ones where you bite down on repeatedly. Imagine a stress ball for your mouth.

That lemon one...I had a nurse in the hospital I work in, seriously advicing a patient to eat lemons for weightloss...she believed the acid would melt fat from the body...sigh...:/
I can think of ONE possible link to weight loss: When you're gaining weight because your body seeks something and you interpret it as hunger - happens often enough. So, if what your body lacks is in the lemon, it might work. :)

The "Step on a crack, break your mother's back" thing isn't just American. I think it probably exists in a number of primarily English-speaking countries. Certainly, I (not an American) grew up with this rhyme.

Awe Mike didn't know the whole step on a crack you will break your mother's back. I remember clearly believing it and avoiding cracks on the sidewalk when I was young. Unless I was mad at my mom lol
While I can’t attest to the efficacy of jaw trainers, I will say that learning proper positions to have your mouth in when resting (not having your teeth touch, tongue position etc. I believe it’s called mewing) def helps give you a more defined jawline as well as cheekbones.
Love you Dr. Mike, you are a very intellectual, down to earth doctor and you don't have an ego complex like some other doctors. You are the kind of doctor that everyone deserves as their primary care. Keep up the great work.
Idk why it’s taken me 22 years of life and watching this video to even consider how my heart literally NEVER gets a break. Definitely feeling something in the heart region about that.
Good point about blood pressure. I once was sent to the doctor because whenever my blood pressure was measured it'd be absurdly high. The doctor then fitted me with a deviced that would make regular and consistent measurements for 24 hours. Turns out, my blood pressure wasn't anywhere near that high, I just responded poorly to having it measured.
I have that issue too, not because I'm nervous, but because I'm particularly sensitive to having my arm gripped that tight; it hurts and shoots my BP by a few points enough that they often do it twice in a row "just in case". 😢
I can 100% confirm that getting nauseous because of a bad smell is an evolutionary adaption to protect you. On two occasions I ate mussels, the first time they were in a curry and afterwards I became violently ill. I had assumed I got food poisoning or the flu. Years later I had just steamed mussels with butter as the main part of a meal on Christmas eve, eating up to 25 mussels. Later that night I was so violently ill I genuinely thought I was going to die I begged my parents to take me to the hospital. I burst the blood vessels and capillaries in the whites of my eyes, in the skin on my face, neck and upper chest and I was sore for days. Turns out I'm extremely allergic to Mussels. Now whenever I smell curry, mussels or strong seafood smells I get incredibly nauseous and even a bit dizzy. It's literally like my body is freaking out and going, " No! We are not doing this again!" Now I know I can never go to Indian restaurants or India because I'll smell curry and I struggle even passing by the seafood part of grocery stores and I have to hold my breath. Logically I know the smells or even curry alone will not hurt me but my instincts tell my body to abort.
This is actually an example of classical conditioning! You had a bad reaction to mussels while eating them in a curry, so your conditioned to be nauseated at the smell/taste of curry. The smell (curry) has become a conditioned stimulus, resulting in a conditioned response (nausea)
Loved this video! Especially the fact that I learned that the funny bone isn't actually a bone blew my mind. Thankyou for this vid doc! Stay happy and healthy. ♥️

The benadryl thing is real. I once took two extra strength ones for some itching after eating food and I dead dreamt that bees were buzzing around me to the point I woke up to check for bees. Now I don't take Benadryl
I had a good conversation with my doctor and cardiologist, and they both agree that if I were to cook my own food every day, and "over salt" everything, I would have less salt intake than if you ate food from the store that was pre-made for every meal. In theory, even if I ate 1/4 cup of salt in my food, so much of that gets evaporated. However, if you eat at mcdonalds for every meal for one day, you could have an equivalent to 1/2 cup of salt per day just from the perservative action of salt used in frozen meats. So moral of the story, as many home-prepared foods are always more beneficial to your diet rather than industrial made food.
I 100% agree with your message but would like to note that salt does not evaporate. The amount of salt you put into something is how much there is, although it may be in juices or other parts that you aren't eating. You're right though, make your own food, it's so much better for you.
Yes, that's my experience as well. As long as the majority of your meals are home cooked and you don't have any special medical conditions, there is no need to worry about cutting down on salt.
How do I convince my father (in his 50s) to have regular medical check-ups? The trouble here is that he is so well-read in virtually everything that he is usually able to self-diagnose correctly, but I am afraid of overconfidence becoming an issue. He's not even a doctor to begin with, so I cannot overstate the importance of having the right kind of experienced expert.
I'm not a doctor, but this is the approach I'd use in your position: Point out that it's great that they're well-read, but they can't do basic medical tests like routine blood tests on themselves. You have have a lot of problems without any symptoms; ones that by the time there's symptoms it's a massive problem. Even Dr Mike, who looks like the epitome of health and had no reason to think anything was wrong, discovered through a routine blood test that he had extremely high cholesterol. Good luck to you!
@@eeeerrrriiiinnnn258 I second that answer. My own dad is a doctor and is usually pretty good at diagnostics, and he takes his regular check-ups very seriously, including slightly more annoying (but very important due to family history) exams such as colonoscopies and cardiac stress tests. It’s only because of those regular tests that he and his doctor were able to catch his prostate tumor before he had any symptoms (he is doing fine now, btw).
@@eeeerrrriiiinnnn258 Tried. I cannot elaborate much (cuz privacy) but he's already been through a major (idiopathic, according to hospital) episode recently. Dr Mike, what are the advantages and disadvantages of eating whenever you are hungry as opposed to the traditional times of the day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?
When I listen to Dr Mike speak, I forget that he didn’t grow up speaking English. He doesn’t have even the slightest hint of an accent. I can attest to the fact that an overly "trained" jaw (due to teeth grinding while asleep or otherwise) can cause you to get bad headaches. Do not do it!
Starting SSRI's gave me the moist vivid and colourful dreams to the point where I almost lost track of what was real and what was just a dream. The problem was that emotions from my dreams were affecting me just as much as if they had come from reality, so I could wake up and be pissed all day due to something someone did in my dream. It was not real, but the feeling of anger WAS.
About salt: dad was a salty eater and when he started taking HBP medication his doctor reduced his salt intake. He got worse! Some of us need more salt in our diet, in my family we are “very salty crusty sweat” people so we need more salt, especially if we are running and doing hard work. Dad was a very active person so he needed to replace his “salts” instead of simply reducing them abruptly.
As someone who's suffered through teeth clenching during the nights most my life, yeah it sucks so bad. It was NOT cheap, but at least i don't wake up feeling like i've been run over by a train every morning.
I've literally felt your pain... The headaches caused by teeth clenching are THE WORST I would always cry myself to exhaustion before I knew the cause of the pain because no painkillers would help in my case The bite guard helped a lot, but what really made a difference were acupuncture and TMJ massages for me If you didn't try yet, maybe you should give it a chance

Question for doctor mike: are you allowed to clean your white coat at home or is it not allowed because of potential allergens in different brands of detergent?
Unless you work in the NICU or immunocompromised (ie cancer) floors, hospitals don’t really care how you clean your uniforms. In those areas do they provide scrubs/disposable gowns for you because they don’t want you bringing in germs. Not really for detergent reasons.
I clean my white coat at home all the time but I will say I’ve been wearing it less often these days. I feel it adds a barrier to doctor-patient relationship.
7:54 I know this is an old video but I just wanted to add something here. On IOS they added a feature that lets you reduce the maximum amount of decibels that come out of your headphones from 100 - 75. You go to settings, then sounds & hapatics, then headphone safety, and you should have a slider that can increase or reduce the maximum decibels for headphones. I am unsure about android or Samsung
if you get your hair thinned, it does! Micro needling roller is what I think you’re thinking about and yes it helps. People who use finasteride plus minoxidil plus derma roller have 3x the standard regrowth. You have to be evaluated by a dermatologist for your hair issue to make sure you receive the right treatment for your condition and have to use one with the right needle depth and use it sparingly as to not damage hair follicles.

Chiropractors can mess you up with the very dumb method of tugging on your neck, potentially severing your spine. I'd say massages are a better idea that wont potentially land you in a hospital.
I think the American chiros I keep seeing on RUclips are very questionable. I live in Europe and the chiros I've been to work way differently. I had a few accidents that messed with my spine and it caused me immense nerve pain. My chiros first massaged me into a mushy pile of human and then cracked here and there some vertebrae, they've never pummelled me the way I've seen on RUclips.
They don't care about actually fixing any issues you might have. They only exist to give you temporary relief and that's all they really care about. What everyone should do is see an orthopedic doctor first, determine if the pain is caused by an actual issue or if it's just from overuse or poor posture. Then talk with the orthopedist to find the best treatment option for you that will actually improve your condition long term. Additionally you can then ask them if it would be safe to go to a chiropractor for temporary relief while you work on fixing the root cause of your pain. If you go to a chiropractor with something wrong with your spine they can make it way worse
I have been to 3 chiros. 2 have been quacks who want to "adjust" you every month on the dot (literally creating a patient base of hypochondriacs), one even pushes crystal and light therapy. The one I'm with now can release my knots, free up motion in seized joints, and bring me from bent over in pain to whole in minutes. He says "I don't want to see you unless you need me" and is very holistic.
That 60% volume thing always confuses me to no end because 60% can be pretty loud with some headphones and barely audible with others. Also depends on the media you listen to, often classical music has really quiet parts where you kind of have to turn up the volume...
Hello Mike, I just wanted to add something to the "headphones at less than 60% volume" thing. It is possible that some headphones are louder than others (due to something called sensitivity in speakers, which determines how loud headphones are at a specific signal level) Also some devices can have louder output. Something like a dedicated external power amplifier will have higher volume at 60% than normal passive in ear/over ear headphones, because the speakers are driven harder (there's more power going into them). The 60% is good as a ballpark rule, but you can also estimate the volume of the headphones with calculations (you take the sensitivity of the headphones and multiply it by the output power of your device, which can be found online most of the time), or measure the volume if you have the means (a calibrated sound meter app could be used, but a dedicated SPL meter, which admitedly is expensive, would be best). Whatever you do, DON'T listen to music so loud that it drowns out the outside noise, because on a busy street for example, the noise can reach somewhere around 60-70db, it takes 80db to risk permanent hearing loss(after roughly 8 hours) , and around 120db to cause pain(although if you listen to your music at 100db, I have to ask why are you hurting yourself?) not to say short bursts of high volume are bad, just don't do it too often. TLDR: measure the volume of your devices or listen to a volume quieter that the outside noise. If you have any disagreements, I'm happy to learn, but this is what I do.
I was actually going to say something like this. I have 55 ohm headphones, not very high, but enough that sound is a bit quieter when plugged into a phone, so my volume is higher as a result.
I thought this because even on RUclips with the same device and headset, I have to adjust the volume for different videos or it'll be fine for the video, but way too loud for the ads
Everything I learned from my audiology studies said that all headphone usage is bad. But definitely, some are far worse than others. If your headphones are louder than the voice of someone talking to you, you should turn down the volume. And never ever use ear buds. This is an argument I've had with my husband many times. Not only does he listen to videos/music too loudly, and with ear buds, but he wears them all the time, even when he's home alone. And SHOCKER, he's half deaf before the age of 30.
For me the entire point of listening to music when I'm outside among crowds of people is so I don't have to hear them and their vehicles. Maybe if we get the sound of cities down to 50 dB, then I only have to turn my headsets up to 60 dB. This should be doable because most of the noise comes from cars, and it is possible to design cities so they don't need a lot of cars. Alternatively (at least in the train, tram, metro, or bus), if people would just respect the fact that I'm reading, I wouldn't have to double up on protection by also listening to music. So, basically I'm hurting myself because the alternative is other people exhausting me. People are loud and they have too many behavioural patterns, thoughts, and emotions.
For the sunscreen question: it depends on the type! For chemical sunscreens, they need to be absorbed into the skin, so they go on first. For physical sunscreens, they need to go on last
Unless it’s a spray meant for use on the face after makeup, rubbing sunscreen onto your face after applying makeup is just going to mess up your makeup though. I use a primer/sunscreen combo before makeup most of the time.

I'm glad you talked about this topic in this video
Because there's this assumption amongst people that all kinds of fats and sugars are bad
But that is far from the truth
I Agree
Yeah, though, with sugars it's a more complex topic. Not necessarily all sugars are bad (Take into account fruit sugars, whose absorption lowers thanks to fiber), but I think the main problem are added sugars in many processed foods.
In short: Don't eat too much sweets nor hyper-processed stuff and you'll be mostly fine.
It's not the specific stuff that's in a food, it's how much there is in it.
"The dose is the poison."
@@yme3345 Very well said, my friend!
@Chris Clifford yeah, taking the fats out of foods so people would think it's healthier left bad tasting food as a result. What did they do to fix their food products then? Add sugar. Obesity started rising faster.

"We need to stop villainizing nutrients" YES! THANK YOU! I'm so tired of seeing people say that it's best to cut out all sugar or fat or carbs or sodum.
YES!
It depends on what it actually is, not all sugar is the same and they aren't all handled in the same way in the body. Added sugars and processed sugars are more of the problem than sugars from food like oranges and strawberries. The same can be said for lipids and many other nutrients
Completely agree!
@@cedar4539 Your body and diet also gets used to all those crappy processed foods that you will always have these cravings and sometimes never really feel satiated, it's a major problem with obesity in the US due to legalizing bad stuff in foods where majority of countries have banned. @@johnshepherd4299 That's primarily due to the fiber in the fruits that slow sugar absorption. Fruits can be eaten safely by most diabetics, in modest quantities of course, due to this. Both fructose and dextrose are absorbed directly.

Its cool that you dont have high blood preasure. And a little fun fact, that happens to a lot of people, it is known as white coat syndrome.
I have that issue too, not because I'm nervous, but because I'm particularly sensitive to having my arm gripped that tight; it hurts and shoots my BP by a few points enough that they often do it twice in a row "just in case". 😢
I love how he doesn't give so much boring details
We are not doing this again!"
Now I know I can never go to Indian restaurants or India because I'll smell curry and I struggle even passing by the seafood part of grocery stores and I have to hold my breath.

I have a question, how good are chiropractors for you? Some people say they need them, and others say they can mess up your back.
Chiropractors can mess you up with the very dumb method of tugging on your neck, potentially severing your spine. I'd say massages are a better idea that wont potentially land you in a hospital.
Beans

Hello Mike,
I just wanted to add something to the "headphones at less than 60% volume" thing.
It is possible that some headphones are louder than others (due to something called sensitivity in speakers, which determines how loud headphones are at a specific signal level)
Also some devices can have louder output. Something like a dedicated external power amplifier will have higher volume at 60% than normal passive in ear/over ear headphones, because the speakers are driven harder (there's more power going into them).
The 60% is good as a ballpark rule, but you can also estimate the volume of the headphones with calculations (you take the sensitivity of the headphones and multiply it by the output power of your device, which can be found online most of the time),
or measure the volume if you have the means (a calibrated sound meter app could be used, but a dedicated SPL meter, which admitedly is expensive, would be best).
Had to wait till the last one BUT I got my answer 😅😅. Gr8 content BTW first time watching and will continue to do so.
Suggestion for tattoo: "bee" on your right bicep and "woop" on your left bicep. So when you flex you "BEE WOOP"
“See my dad would break my spine if i didnt get it right” got me dying💀
He said "daddy"
Honestly after I found Dr. Mike's channel and seeing and learning about all this medical stuff has made me consider going to medical school to become a M.D.
I’m so glad you said about the multiple tests for blood pressure! Whenever my blood pressure is taken it’s always ridiculous and I have had to tell people before to take it a couple more times and then they’re like “oh yeah it’s totally normal/healthy”. I get incredibly nervous and it’s always super high 🤣
that happens to me sometimes, my doctor called it "white coat hypertension", lol
