I wish I did not sell my 4 banger Ranger. 25 MPG is not that bad. Neither was the 300,000 miles on it.
But if I had to tow something under 6000lbs I used the Crown Vic. Yes the people did not like me pulling a trailer with the Ranger at 55 MPH.
I used to use the Toyota FJ 60 but somebody really wanted it (stolen). Oh and also they did not like me doing 55 MPH. Sorry it was geared for 55MPH
In the summer the FJ was in your way. In the winter your go faster was in my way.
If I needed a pickup I rented it or a box truck.

Couldn't agree with you more! I had a 5.4L 2004 F150 that I bought new. It was a great truck. When I decided to get a new one in 2021, I searched high and low for a new V8 powered F150. Couldn't find one. All had twin turbo V6s. While these engines might be trouble free for a few years - like you - I keep my vehicles for a long time. I have been in the reliability business for many years and one thing I know: the faster a piece of equipment rotates the less reliable it will be and lubrication has to be flawless. Turbos can turn as fast as 100,000 rpm. Using your same logic, I ended up with a new 2021 Toyota Tundra with the 5.7L engine. Waiting till 2022 was out of the question because I knew that Toyota was also going to the twin turbo V6s in 2022. I'm older than you and very likely this Tundra will be the last vehicle that I own. I hope that your new Sierra turns out to be a great truck!

Glad it was helpful! The issue is the automotive industry has to meet miles per gallon mandates by the Federal Government for their whole fleet. So their focus is no longer making reliable vehicles, but instead, to make vehicles that get the best mileage possible. We, the users of the vehicles, for the most part will trade MPG for reliability and longevity, but nobody asks us!

They are doing to gas engines as they did to diesel back in early 2000's

I agree with what you're saying about truck life and pricing. I have a '16 silverado LTZ 6.2 that I bought with 9k on the clock. I'm at 173k miles now and it's been rock solid for me. Note that I drive it like an adult, stay ahead on maintenance, and don't abuse it but I can't see paying the asking prices for the new trucks. Regarding features, the '16 LTZ has everything and more than I need and will need in the future... carplay, sunroof, heated cooled seats, its effectively a luxury vehicle...etc.
I never minded AFM as it did help out with mileage especially on long trips where, before I put a mild lift (king coilovers, UCA's, Deaver springs, etc) and 35's it would cruise down the interstate in "V4" and got decent mileage for a 6.2ltr V8... decent being a relative term.
note: I still have AFM enabled and haven't melted a lifter yet. Since I am at those high miles, I am considering doing an AFM delete with an upgraded cam to eliminate the potential point of failure but at this point, I'm not really after too much more power but want the truck to last!
    Good video. 🍻

I own a Tacoma SR5 which is a pretty basic V6 model truck. It can technically tow around 6k pounds I think, though I've never tested it. I only have a 1600 lbs utility trailer and I don't even feel it back there. I'm not really afraid of a V6 with turbo, that's much more common than the weird half stroke engine that GMC is using. I completely agree though, I don't like that a lot of manufacturers (cars and trucks) are adding way too many bells to mark up the price. It's hard to find just a bare work truck - but if you don't need 10k+ tow capacity, a V6 Tacoma has been a nice drive for me.

The manual explains the adaptive nature of the transmission and since i read it the first day it was no surprise to me. Small turbo engines will not perform as well as a V8 or V6, turbos are pressurizing a small engine to make it produce more power at the expense of the engine, turb lag and the owner. A turbo says upfront the engine is too small. GM is putting a small 4 cylinder in the new Acadia and Traverse, 5-to-6-thousand-pound vehicles. Our V6 2017 Acadia gets 34 MPG highway, a 4 cylinder will never get that nor have the power or response the V6 has. GM has just lost us as a customer.

I still drive my 2004 Dodge ram with a Hemi and 130k original miles. If it breaks I fix it because I can't/wont buy a new truck at today's prices.

Brad Ford has a comercial truck line that is more like what you are looking for. I'm sure GM does too. You want find these trucks in the used truck market because companies run them until they are junkers.

I guess the oil companies have nothing to do with fuel mileage. Just the government 🤔
Oh wait. If you get better gas mileage doesn’t that save you money?

    • @PineyGroveHomestead
      @PineyGroveHomestead  3 дня назад +1

It's math. Better gas mileage doesn't save you any money if your truck is 50% more than it should be, insurance is higher because it's harder to repair, it has a short life span, it's not available because it's always breaking down, etc, etc... People do a lot dumb things to save $1 per month in gas.

Y’all realize these Tier 4 emissions laws were signed into place in 2004?

But they keep increasing the CAFE standards without regard to the machines this nation relies on to do work.

      @@PineyGroveHomestead
      Tiers 2 and 3
Both second and third tiers introduced stricter regulations beginning in 1998 with Tier 2. This phase addressed carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons and NOx along with emitted particulate matter (PM). While Tier 2 covered engines of all sizes manufactured between 2001 and 2005, Tier 3 was specific to engines with 50 to 750 hp. Tier 3 further restricted exhaust emissions and was implemented from 2006-2008.
      Tier 4
Deemed the last phase and signed in 2004, Tier 4 set the transition to run from 2008 to 2015 with a 90% reduction in PM and NOx as the new standard. A new ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel would be required to achieve this target, along with the need for manufacturers to establish advanced engine technologies and innovative after-treatment of exhaust gas.
It is through this final transition period that the Environmental Protection Agency provided machine builders a few additional years until 2020 or 2021 to meet regulations. The government further stipulated that manufacturers with an existing inventory of Tier 1, 2, or 3 engines would be permitted to continue to use these engines in their generators until the stock is consumed.
      Again, I reiterate that
These laws were signed in 2004.
I don’t know what you are talking about with CAFE standards.
Can you provide some documentation or evidence?

Usually equipment gets better with product improvements...BUT these aren't improvements, these are government-imposed handicaps and cost deterrents/penalties.

It’s such a pain in the ass I have a fully deleted 2013 Duramax regular cab manual windows and everything no problem in Florida but now I’m in Utah and they don’t want it on the road I guess because it gets 24.5 mpg? They only want it on the road if it’s getting 12mpg to help the environment

That's why I bought my 2019 Tundra. Fuel economy ain't great but it will still be getting mediocre mpg 400,000 miles down the road.

I'm not going to give government a pass, but a lot of the blame is on the manufacturers. The manufacturers could be more creative with CAFE standards. CAFE standards require the overall line excluding heavy duty pickups to reach an overall MPG number. Domestic manufacturers have hurt that by discontinuing passenger cars and pushing crossovers which hurt the overall MPG. They do this in the name of better profits. Nissan and up until recently Toyota had half tons without cylinder shut down, turbos, or stop start. The difference is they also have cars to balance out the MPG.
Secondly they could bypass a lot of this by offering HD trucks without trying to upsell you from the half tons. HD trucks don't affect CAFE standards which is why they don't even list EPA MPG estimates.
Last of all manufacturers have been making the trucks larger and larger. They are also taller than ever. Which creates a lot more wind resistance. So they have to get more creative for fuel economy.

If it takes 50hp to accelerate the truck it takes 50hp to accelerate the truck. A lower gear does nothing for fuel economy in regards to carrying or accelerating the load. In fact a lower gear uses more fuel and creates more west and tear.
The only thing lower rpm's does is reduces parasitic loss from the extra energy is takes to spin the engine itself a little bit faster. ( this is an infinitely small amount of energy when compared to the energy required to move a 8000lb truck)

    • @PineyGroveHomestead
      @PineyGroveHomestead  5 дней назад

a higher gear does. it keeps the engine rpms low....10 gears are more options for the engine than 6. Gains 1mpg or so but greatly complicates the transmission.
