    Don't know if this weighed into the factor of switching to aluminum or not, but up here in the northeast the aluminum body is a major plus because the road salt in the winter doesn't rot out as fast as steel. In any area where winter hits and the roads get salted (or "treated") we only have about 8 years of service before we are replacing body parts because they are rotted out. Rust is a huge expense to repair and a safety concern as well.

      Amen Josh! Here in the Midwest they started using that liquid brine about 25 years ago and that shit kills vehicles WAY faster than the old rock salt. I've got a 05 Chevy half ton that I'm waiting on the body shop to do rockers and cab corners. I bought the truck brand new, had it Ziebarted, wash the hell out of it and keep it in the shed. Only has 77,000 miles and 11 years and its rotting away. GM needs to look into Aluminum alloy cabs at least. P.S. People around here are trying Line-X as undercoating in trying to stop rust, maybe it will work.

      Mine seems to be doing just fine..... Ford has insulated every connection point to the frame or dissimilar metals with thick 3M clear film and dielectric fittings. I bet my ford with the aluminum body will outlast my 05' Silverado

      I have an 05 Silverado w/2530k miles. I have a small amount of rust on the bottom of the doors, and that is all. Quarters rockers all good. Never been undercoated. They use the brine on the roads here in Ohio also.

    Your right about this, but you forgot the most important part of why this happened. The government is making them get a certain mpg by the year like 2025 and aluminum is something to get better gas mileage. Chevy and dodge will eventually do it too

    This was a very clear message when it came to distinguishing between the Ford F-450 and F-350 as well as the overall rationale for the switch to aluminum. I do still wonder if the new body is a strong as the steel body and thus capable of managing increased payloads. Metal fatigue is understood in steel bodies but perhaps not as much as in aluminum bodies?

    Hello again! I hope you're well. Thanks for your vids, I love watching fledgling channels grow into something bigger and take shape. It's nice to get a common sense engineering explanation for the crazy truck war. I think you have a unique opportunity to have a big following based on your skill set. As a truck guy, I'm tired of crappy reviews and reviewers just reading the brochure or doing a media drive as a full review. Real expertise is nice, and you'll have a lot of loyal subscribers in the future if you keep up the good work. That being said, it'd be really cool to start seeing some longterm reviews on your rig, how to towing vids, etc. If I remember correctly you mentioned you have a friend/neighbor with a Gm. It would be really cool if you could get some friends with other makes to participate in longterm reviews (maintenance check ins, common failures, etc at 25k intervals), as no one has done this effectively yet. Just spitballing here, thanks very much for your time and sharing your expertise. Have a great day.

    Every truck I have ever owned died of rust. I have 240,000 miles on my Dodge and it runs great but the wheel wheels look like Swiss cheese, Ill keep it going as long as I can then get a Ford.

    Trucks are supposed to be a work tool. Aluminum cabs, hoods, and fenders are ok, but not the bed. I don't think twice about loading up my Silverado's bed with 2 tons of gravel, try that in an aluminum ford.

      Yea I worked in a welding shop that did repair work on those aluminum dump beds. They get ripped up worse than you know, and they are made of really heavy duty aluminum plate. Most dump beds weigh more than those complete ford trucks!

      your not to smart when a person put gravel in there truck they most likely have a bed liner that takes up all of the abuse and make the trucks equal

    My concern with an aluminum box. I use a ccrsport pro track to transport my my 350lb bike. It's a rail which bolts to the front inside of the box. I mount a winch to it, to pull the bike up a ramp. I'm pretty confident with that on a steel box. But will it tear out on aluminum? Your thoughts?

    In 02 I bought a Silverado 8.1 dually 4x4 , the metal and plastic fenders split apart because of a roof rack that carries two ladders ,my ford and dodge pickups never had a bed fall apart ,other things of course, next batch of trucks I'm buying Mitsubishi, my friends have 500k on flatbed and almost no down time ,,I'm not buying plastic and aluminum trucks

    Aluminum creates a huge problem when it comes time for collision repair. Aluminum is much more difficult to repair and many shops aren't set up to repair aluminum. Look for these trucks to start popping up left and right at the Salvage Pools. Won't take much to "total" one out.

    But what about the important stuff, like "how long will it last?" and "how much will it cost to get body damage repaired compared to steel?" I'm pretty sure I don't want an aluminum truck. But even Ford's steel trucks were very flimsy. I leaned against the door of one, and made a big dent in it, I weight 250 pounds. Compare that to a '60s model, where I could have slammed my weight into it hard enough to hurt myself without causing any damage to the truck. Also the bumpers of newer trucks are made out of the same thing they make beer cans out of. How many newer trucks have you seen that didn't have pretzels for bumpers? Trucks, and vehicles in general, are getting crappier and crappier.

    Ford is not worry too much about your truck after warranty ends. they just want their sales numbers to look good.

      +Big truck Big Rv They could if they wanted to. Go back to the mid 90's with the Ford and Chevy half ton step side pickups (yes the F-150 was called a flair side). On those beds you had a steel inner box bonded to fiberglass outer panels. The only issue with the bond would be keeping the Aluminum and Steel separated by some kind of gasket to stop Dissimilar Metal Corrosion.

    Flex and time will kill these. We run them at work, we loaded the bed to the tits one day with the doors open, the rear cab doors would not close... We ratchet strapped the doors shut. Your right about GVWR, a 2000's Chevy Astro van can technically pull more than any current half ton truck.

      SilverRaven1959 im sure there are plenty of half ton trucks that will pull more than an Astro can but very few of them have the weight to be stable when breaking and turning steep curves, Astro vans are excellent tow vehicles as with any full or mid sized van with the power to do so, I've had 2 Astros and both handled towing a load better than my half ton Chevy or my father in laws F250, both trucks had plenty enough power, just a bit light in the rear

      i have a 16 chevy express 2500 cargo plus a 15 2500 dmax crew cab....2300 payload on the dmax, 3200 on the van...both excellent tow vehicles up to 10k....i rarely go over....have not towed with astro but would make great tow rig..but no where near 10k..

      aluminum don't rust it corrode. when a truck i. if u live in the south rust is not a big deal unless u live by the ocean. most people don't just by a new vehicles because of rust they buy a new vehicles because the old one become unreliable

      Sure but aluminum doesn't have a reliable fatigue point, so it may not rust but it'll break before the steel does in a long term scenario, so less life to the truck overall.

    You make a good point. But wouldn't it be better to remove many of the features that litter trucks today like DVD players, automatic climate control systems, multi-speaker audio systems, and leather interiors? With all the electronics in trucks today I bet the wiring harnesses alone weighs hundreds of pounds. Get back to basics and lower the cost and complexity of modern trucks. That would benefit most consumers.

    When I looked for mine, the chevy was the lightest 1 ton pickup. Of course, sound deadening is less than ideal . But the duramax engine is light.
    One way manufacturers need to shed weight is the seats. Seats are well over 50kgs in trucks !

    I think i'll stick to my 84 F250 with it's cast iron detroit built big block V8 engine and body made of STEEL rather than buy an aluminum toy with a tiny v6 engine that i'll murder
    i for one don't need althe fancy electronic shit these new vehicles have ,, it's a problem called ASIS ,, ADDITIONAL SHIT INSIDE ,,and all of it calculated to fail at the worst possible moment
    and literally all of it a distraction ,,especially anything with a touch screen ,and all this new radar safety systems ,, my god people are taking this shit for granted and substituting it for good old common sense driving ability ,, i had a bitch back right into my truck a couple weeks ago and the flimsy excuse she used was that the backup sensor failed ,, jesus whatthe fuck every car comes with mirrors and back window , for gods sake use them already ,and i have seen more and more people depending on this technology and forgetting the things we were taught when we learned to drive

      my particular monster i built from the ground up to tow my travel trailer cause i kept kiling chevies ,, i fatally broke 3 454s in 1 year ,,4 years now and my 478 big block is going strong it's got about 35K miles on it nearly all towing and so far trouble free ,, except for a set of plugs and points

      the problem with small engines like all small engines they make all of their torque and horsepower at high RPM
      nothing says muscle like 550hp at 4000 rpm
      and 670LB/Ft at 3100 ,,
      the engine is coupled to a 6 speed manual from a 1999 ford superduty ,and mated to a 3 speed Gear vendors overdrive ,giving me 18 speeds total my rear axle gears are 3.55 highway gears ,,
      my 9500 pound truck ,a 1984 F250 crew cab when not loaded averages 14 city mpg and 21 on the highway ,,and it will tow my 35ft 5th wheel camper without complaint i can still get 11 on the highway towing the trailer

    Spot on. As a mechanic for almost 40 years I can agree completely. As an example, I've had customers by Ford trucks that were the same weight rating ten years apart and the newer truck was not able to handle the same load capacity as the older truck. This has been a Ford problem for 30 years. To take the load out of the older truck and put it in the newer truck and the newer truck required heavier springs installed. Both trucks same rating.

    Everyone wants a 4 door truck, all before were 3/4 to 1 ton, 2 door standard cab trucks are becoming extinct, BTW gotta add all the electronics and air bag junk for safety, look at a 70's 1/2 ton to one built today, is it necessary for carrying a load, hell no, farmers consistently put tons on 1/2 ton trucks in the past, even with them being smaller.

    My Dad still has his 1999 F350 power stroke DRW. I think it's one of the best trucks they ever made. It's only ever had minor problems and was pre emissions. It's still bone stock but it's my understanding they can be tuned easily.

    AND.....99.9% of the body shops can't repair aluminum damage...so when they are damaged, they have to typically replace the parts.....NOT repair them. So that's great for their replacement part division!! There's more to it than weight ratings. A damaged aluminum frame rail??? You will see a rise in total losses in those.....guaranteed.

      northlander I can tell you having worked in a ford dealerships body shop it looks nice now just wait until you have to replace your windshield then you'll see all the corners they cut a proper roof replacement takes over a week. your repair was hammer and dolly and lots of putty not a full roof skin I wish you the best with leaks in the next couple years I think I'm fixing your body shops screw ups when they get to my shop and having to fix them right..... go out and tap the repair with your hand if it sounds like a tin can it was repaired and if it gives a nice thump when you tap it it has been repaired with bondo.

      Aluminum does corrode, it just takes longer then steel or iron. A common example is aluminum engine blocks or heads. That white, powdery stuff that that builds up over time is corrosion. It's the reason I still paint most of my aluminum blocks.

      Ask most body shops throughout half of the geography of the united states that sees snow. I've seen countless Ford trucks bypass rust and turn to dust - within a THREE year period !!
      Nothing new with Ford though.
      Ford has metal and paint issues going back to the 70's with their trucks. Even in some of the most exotic vehicles made such as the Ford GT - quite the number of them have highly defective paint issues - surprising that it ever left the factory like that

      Ronald, I live near Cleveland Ohio, the heart of the Rustbelt. Plenty of salt, and from what I see on a daily basis, I have no idea what you are talking about. I see F-150's going back to the 1980's every day. That surprises me because I remember the 1970's when everything rusted away in 4 years. The times I see a rusted F-150 from the early 2000's up is the rare one that had damage or scrapes through paint and e-coat to bare metal. On any modern vehicle from most manufacturers it is rare to see rust bubble up paint from underneath not due to paint damage. However, take a look at the left rear wheel well of any 1996 - 1999 Taurus or Sable......that happens there as the exception.

      I'm a GM guy but I have to give it to ford for moving to the aluminum body, overall I think it is a great change other than the video of the bricks punching holes through the box.. that is a turn off for me but it can always be improved and strengthened. Aluminum does not rust like the traditional steel does and I HATE rust. Its sad how many vehicles are rusted out these days.

      There is a simple fix for the "holes in the bed" commercial, it's called rhino lining. You put on a thick enough coat of that stuff that bricks not going to go through.

    As I heard your commentary on aluminum vs steel it sounded like you were trying to convince yourself that aluminum was better than steel on trucks.There are only a few advantages to aluminum. It's resistant to rust, it's lighter and it cost less for the manufacturer to make which increases profit margins to the glee of GM and it's shareholders. I'm not completely convinced it's more durible for heavy and awkward payloads especially in the bed section. It might be the trend of the future but not necessarily an improvement in every category. Also most men buy trucks to have a strong durible steel structure. This is going to be a hard sell and not necessarily a convincing one to the consumer.

      The box steel frames are hydroformed which means the base tubing is put into a series of progressively more final shaping dies, filled with hydraulic fluid, and pressurized to about 100,000 p.s.i. The finished frame is virtually indestructible (as well as lighter weight.) It has undergone a process of work hardening that is similar to annealing in 4130 chromoly tube race chassis. : )'

    Im a chevy guy but i think aluminum is actually a good thing. Maybe not the bed but the fact it wont rust is huge. The panels will last years to come and surely if the motors and drive train can hold up for a while they will be around for a while which is good for reputation. Theres nothing worse than spending lots of money and having a truck rot prematurely due to salts and chemicals. Especially in the cold north. Good job Ford.

      Daniel Pettis I see aluminum structures corroded everyday at work. This is absolutely not true. Aluminum corrodes like a mofo. I am an inspector for airlines and most of our structural repairs are because of corrosion.

      he means unlike steel once an oxide layer forms on aluminium it becomes impermeable to more oxygen so it doesn't deteriorate all the way through. true it could affect tolerances in situations where that is important, but you wont end up with trucks years down the road needing cab corners or floors, etc.

    Aluminum is a BAD metal to use for truck bodies for many reasons. 1. it dents twice as easy as steel 2. Aluminum fatigue cracks 3 times faster. 4. its softer, (see the bad crash tests of these aluminum trucks) 5. it oxidizes/ corrodes faster than steel rusts in salt coast-line air. 6. aluminum sheet tears much easier than steel, the list goes on.

An advantage aluminum has over steel is that it doesn’t produce red rust. So Ford had to go beyond the usual tests that include driving vehicles through countless salt baths and soaking them in high-humidity chambers. The company developed a modified corrosion test using an acidified spray to be more aggressive on the high-strength, aluminum alloy. After simulating 10 years of exposure, the aluminum material showed virtually no signs of degradation.

      Big Truck Big RV their game grade of aluminum is the lowest I've seen. It's extremely soft and bends a few times then breaks.

    My Toyotas Tacoma’s did fine and I honestly loved them, but West Virginia Salts the roads liberally and the Tacomas couldn’t survive the salt even though I constantly washed them and sprayed out underneath. I got my first base STX with a tiny dual turbo F150, super crew with 4 WD. It would absolutely fly, was way more comfortable and got about 3 mpg more per gallon plus we started camping and it was way better at pulling our camper, even at around 4,000 pounds, maybe 4,700 loaded. 94k and not the first problem. In 2023 traded and got a Super Cab, bench seat, rubber floor, much more usable 6.5 foot bed, FX4 package it 10,000 pounds of towing and the same great lil engin, we also stepped up our camper to a 30 foot 5,500 pound camper . I like Chevys and RAMS and even Tundra’s, but I hate rust. The complexity of the lil engine worries me, but good maintenance and not pushing it to its limits hopefully will allow the truck to last 250,000 miles. Really enjoyed the video, I always thought going with a dual turbo V6 was a much bigger risk for Ford than the Aluminum body, but now GM offers a turbo model and Toyota makes nothing but and their trucks are still made of steel! They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

    Metal fatigue will kill these trucks long before a steel truck will rust out because it is crazy how much a ford flexes.

      The Joker. your 2012 f150 does not have an aluminum body. it may have some aluminum parts throughout but the body its self is steel.

    I am curious as to how they will fare in harsh weather climates......body panel corrosion, I would think that they would toy around with frames that are made with steel and polymers combinations like the rails on modern handguns allowing for lighter weight and corrosion resistance.

    I have a 450 when I go over rough road or bumps there is a loud clacking sound from the front suspension seems like something is loose does your 450 do the same?

      Guy Good; yes, and sometimes I hear it when I slow down while towing the fifth wheel. I've Wondered the same thing and have been told it's the large front Sway bar brackets creaking. I need to mount my GoPro under there and find out.

    I just traded in my silverado 2014 for a Ford f150 2016 platinum at spikes. I'm not sure why I did it but I'll tell you one thing the ride on the Ford is so awesome. btw I'm fom Mcallen.
