This NEW CHEAP TRUCK Just Killed Toyota & Ford

- A SMALL PICKUP TRUCK WAR IS STARTING AND THERE'S A NEW CHEAP PICKUP TRUCK that I think is actually worth buying in 2024. Over the past few years full size trucks have been getting bigger, fancier, and more expensive. But in 2024 sales of these overpriced trucks have slowed to a crawl and buyers are looking for cheaper options when it comes to the trucks they buy. The small truck market is starting to make a huge comeback and we now have more options than ever.

I agree, but time will tell.
Everything in the newest gen is a mistake... It's a crap truck

It also costs less to register and insurance cost less.
The problem is they aren't going to let people do this much longer. Every year they work towards limited what a classic car is, how it can be titled etc.

@@chrisynp Inline 4s are not naturally balanced. They require balancers and special engine mounts to isolate vibration from people. A turbo makes no difference. The inherent vibration of a 4 cylinder does not affect its longevity. Turbos do wear over time, but no faster than the rest of the engine components. There are a lot fewer parts to break on an inline four turbo than a V6. Inline 6s also have fewer parts than a V6 and are inherently very smooth. V6s also require balance shafts and are kind of a bastard engine design.
yes they will. Pushing a little engine with turbos will lead to an expensive premature failure.

I loved my 79 and 88 Toyota Hi-Lux trucks. They were simple and bulletproof. My 88 brand new was $9385. I'm fine with roll up windows and mechanical seats. They've just made everything too complicated and expensive.
I'd like this comment twice if they'd let me
I prefer mechanical seats. I drive a manual 5 speed 98 Sentra, it does not even have a tachometer....and I don't even need it. I am in my 20s
They just need to go back to the mini trucks they built in the 80s. A simple 4 cylinder 150hp. Simple interior . They want do it because. A truck like the Isuzu, Mazda or S10. Would kill all other sales. A simple mini truck simple engine with a 5 or 6 speed standard. A/C and manual window options. That we can add the after market parts to upgrades we want. Just give us a simple truck that's affordable.... It's what we want
I had an Isuzu diesel P'up in thr 80's and it was $6k new. It wasnt heavy duty, but it did the job for a basic truck and even had AC. My other truck was pretty cool as well and was a Nissan Hardbody truck that I also paid around $6K for. It was so basic that there wasn't anything to go wrong. I did end up adding AC for $800 and drove it until '91 with great gas mileage and no issues. These are the types of trucks we need today for no more than $20k. No bells or whistles, just basic and reliable.
It might not sell very well though. A lot of people that would buy one still have an old Hard body, or a Ranger or something. A lot of them have been retired to backup vehicles, almost exclusively used for Lowe's trips, dump runs etc. Whenever I go to the dump etc, there are s-10 pickups everywhere with historic tags.
Chances are, that B3000 on the side of the driveway will be around for a long time.
If the companies where smart, they should sell basic mini trucks with a modular design so pll can buy upgrades later on and it would be easy to modify with premium options
I loved those old trucks. They were bare-bones and great fun to drive.

This 'new normal' inflation pricing is wild..
Thanks to GREED of Corporations mostly at this point!! WAKE UP and start placing blame correctly on the corporations marking up prices grossly to increase greatly the profits for their shatrholdefs, knowing most people will buy their cover story that they HAD to increase costs to us "just to cover their increased costs due to inflation..." In other words, they are PRICE GAUGING customers, and far too many of us just accept it, and continue to buy things at these ridiculous prices, and just stupidly keep blaming inflation, or worse, put all blame on Biden!
Now wait a minute here, you said that a Toyota Tacoma TRD is a $60k truck new... Lets do some basic math here; $51,995 x average 14% interest rate for a used vehicle at this moment in time is $7,279.30. Add the two numbers together and you get $59,274.30. Who's paying $60k for a used Tacoma with 6k miles on it. KBB shows trade in value on a used TRD nicely loaded at 39,9 low end to 43,3 high end. The dealership is making a killing on it and you're making it sound like a good deal. The 2nd owner is going to take a massive hit on depreciation as it leaves the lot for the second time. This is why car and truck prices are still so high. STOP buying these vehicles at these ridiculous prices. You're not going to save $10k, you're going to pay back $60k on a 2nd owner vehicle with its value losing probably another $5k to $10k.

And you also have to consider that if you would say get involved in an accident and the truck was totaled a month later, the insurance company would only pay the amount of what the truck was worth, not the inflated price paid at the dealership . So they could only pay out $40 k, not the 60k paid. Most people don’t get gap insurance
If they quit making EVERYTHING a 4 door and go back to extended cabs, they could sell a truck on the same frame without a “baby” bed. I would buy that and the towing capacity would increase.
I hate the baby bed
?? If they are selling a truck on the same frame, and assuming same drivetrain as well, the towing capacity would not increase. Right on on picking the Frontier. I had one and put 450,000 miles with no issues. Hats off to that dealer for giving you the key and showing us the inside. Gonna have to pay them a visit!
You might as well assume this Frontier isn't even made by the same company as one you bought years ago with 450K mi put on, as there is going to be nothing the same about the two besides the brand on the badge.
Thats all dealerships do is mark up prices. They should be abolished! By now we should have other alternatives to buying straight from the manufacturers themselves and completely bypass the dealerships slimy experience. Its time to EVOLVE! All we need is a showroom and delivery service. Financing can be done online. There is absolutely no need for a dealership.
But back in the days, dealers got their congress-critters and pet legislators to pass laws that make it hard for manufacturers to bypass dealers and sell directly to consumers. So while we feel we don't need them, we are stuck with them until all those laws get abolished. (Meanwhile, they still have the lawmakers' ears, and we don't.)
What about service?
Don't think because you buy a Tesla on line that your are getting it cheaper than if there were dealers. Tesla is taking the profit the dealer would get and they are not reducing the price because of it. They have the highest Mark up than any other manufacturer. I've never ever paid list, not even for my electric car. People who pay these prices are creating the problems. Stop being idiots.
@@richardmartink679 -- If we did away with dealerships, the process would only change a little. You would still go to a showroom, talk with a commissioned salesperson, and take delivery at that location. There would be a service bay somewhere on site or nearby. The prices would be roughly the same.
What would be different is the fact that the sales office would only deal with one company's brands. They would be more knowledgeable about their brands, etc. Warranty work would be simplified because you would only have to convince one bureaucracy that there is a problem.
Trade-ins would probably all be sent to auction, and buying a used car would likely not happen at major-brand showrooms. You would probably get more for trade-ins of the same brand, since they would have an interest in convincing you that their brand retains value better then their competitors' brands.

I ended up with a Frontier SE 4.0L V6 4WD manual 68k mi - one owner, good CarFax etc. I figure I came out somewhere between $7k and $10k to the good versus an identical Tacoma. I've owned 6 Toyotas (2 of them trucks), and 4.5 years in I'm still really happy w/this Frontier (and I drove it off the lot fully paid for).
You can get a lower trim for under $40k msrp. Plus most people report that Nissan will negotiate the price under MSRP. I suspect $35-38k is very doable for a crew cab 4x4. The main issue with Nissan is the outdated infotainment center and dash. however, that's the compromise you make by accepting that but not having turbo headaches and other drive line issues.

That's cool.... but my thought is dealers and buyers would be better off.... if.... all the trucks were base models the dealer would only order different colors... so he would always have the color you wanted and you just say I want this module and that module .... it is what I think all EV are going to do.... since they are all electric they can make one car / truck with all the options.... then you buy the car... whatever options you purchased will be unlocked and the rest won't be useable..... unless you pay for the firmware update for that option.@@jeffmiller3150
Thank you. Exactly what I was looking for. I wanted so much to buy a small pickup for my 65th birthday, but I loaned a nephew some money and needed to recoup first. This year, I've recouped and I'm looking for a small pickup right in the $40,000 - $45,000 range.
My frontier is 13 now. Still runs the same it did when I bought it. Love the frontiers and the new ones look great!
Still driving my 07.😊
I would never buy a pick up that I couldn't put a sheet of plywood in! What's the point
Apparently you can put a 4 x 8 sheet in the Maverick but the tailgate has to be down.

we own a Honda Ridgeline and we love it. Fancy trim and it dies farm things for the wife. And we take long trips in comfort.
We also own an older Ram full size for real farm tasks.
How dare you mention a Ridgeline, you're going to offend all the pavement princess who 'need a real truck' to commute to their office job
I’m not sure what this reviewer’s reasoning was for not recommending the Ridgeline other than he just doesn’t like it. But from the video he makes exceptions for other vehicles he does recommend that the RL has the same attributes. Maverick is unibody construction and is considered a “light use” truck and he’s ok with that. The Frontier is a body on frame but he barely mentions that and points out its reliable V6 which the Ridgeline also has.. but this guy never covers what exactly he doesn’t like about the RL. If you don’t like it that’s ok but as a reviewer you have a responsibility to explain why and have some credible reasons why.. if it’s just the styling.. well..say that. The RL is a great truck that does what most people need from a truck and leaves out things you don’t really need. Not sure what the hate is about.
@@robinphilip5747 you can hear the bias towards the Nissan, and spends the most time on it
Bro you think a 2021 with 41k miles for 33 grand is a good deal ? The truck starts at 29 brand new
Thank you for doing such great video work but with all due respect, have you ever driven a Honda Ridgeline? It is by far the most comfortable truck you’ll ever drive and as you said, it’s impeccably reliable one of the best things I like about it is the trunk, which no other manufacturer offers. There is a lot of room there so you can lock up tools or any other gear without having to spend money on a cap or some other bed cover. He uses the legendary 3.5 L V6 with the most reliable valve timing system in the industry, I’d love to see you do a front to back on a Ridgeline. Thank you.

Tacomas will NEVER be collectors items they are just used trucks.
70s and 80s are not either .
@@gordocarbo 👍
They say that every Tacoma generation and they never fail. Get over it.
The ridgeline is the best buy. Non turbo V6, AWD, same room, darn near the same size bed ( if you're getting a crewcab in the frontier) and a 2 way, swing away tailgate. Its lower to the ground for easier loading. Plus, a lockable in bed trunk. And the truck bed is all composite so you can beat the crap out of it and it has no effect on it. More than likely the same towing capacity. That frontier really is nice though. But the ridgeline just makes more since.
Might as well just get a minivan which is all the RL is.
Ridge line isn’t a truck
Ridgeline is a pilot that was cut in half almost.
Look at the comparable price
Chick vehicle
That sand color Nissan Frontier is amazing. Also the red wine colour next to it. Oh man.
You clearly have never driven a Ridgeline. I drove one a a goof while shopping Pilots. Expected to laugh at it, and then bought it. It is more than a pickup, it is a family vehicle. Only usable backseat in any mid sized truck. The trunk and tailgate are great. Only mid sized truck you are going to lay 4x8 material flat on bed between wheel wells. Still has a naturally aspirated V6. Next time you're at the Honda dealer take one for a drive.
R.I.P. true meaning of the word "literal".
I think those Nissan's got a 6-year 100,000 Mi warranty too... for an extra 10 grand you can probably get the Nissan Titan V8 400 horsepower engine😎
The frontier has a 3 year warranty. If you pay an extra $2,000, you can get a 10 year warranty.
Stop making Titan.
@@eddiehaskell5578 that should be mandatory for the purchase of a Nissan
I had a 2015 Frontier Pro 4x and now have a 2023 Frontier, Pro 4x. Love it! It is not a class leader in any category, but it does EVERYTHING very well, at a relatively affordable price.
Does the Nissan have cylinder deactivation or start-stop? I bought a GMC with the AFM and did nothing but act up. I actually gained MPG when I disabled it. Nissans seems to have all the features I want and none of the ones I don’t. Might be in the market in a year or two, if things calm down. Definitely going to look at Nissan.
I would take an aspirated v6 before I would buy any turbo engines . The turbo engines are not designed for pulling and working hard every day. They will use more fuel when you are pulling a 3000 pound trailer . The v8 pulls way better after I got rid of eco boost and the engine runs lot cooler on the long steep hills
I agree. But the US EPA is forcing the problem that they want fuel efficiency but it doesnt apply to large trucks, hence why we have large trucks and large suvs
Yep. The old pre turbo Ford diesel were turds until the turbos came out. I have a Cummins 5.9 that was designed from the bottom up for a turbo.@@vallam3531
Great job, the Frontier is overlooked because people don’t trust Nissan but they are good. I was going to do a similar video on the same thing, Instead I’ll just enjoy yours :). 40k is still too much though, buy used or wait

Ya. $35k would be nice.
What’s killing Nissan is their reputation going down the drain because of the CVT transmissions, which aren’t obviously on their trucks.
@@hilltopmachineworks2131 that’s awesome. My dad has the 4.0l in the xterra, has over 200k and still runs like new.
They have the worst transmissions ever. Just ask anyone who does transmissions. They fix more Chevys and Nissans than anything.
You are absolutely correct. The Colorado and even Canyon can be a bargain. I just wish they offered a “standard 6’ bed instead of 5’. I hate the look where the front is longer than the bed.
I look at the truck market everyday. The newer midsize models are all very nicely done. Earlier this week I found two 2022 Frontiers (new body style) used for $25K. Both under 30K miles and both were the SV trim. At that price or better if you can negotiate they are a very affordable option for a new body style 4x4 Frontier. It also seems that with the glut of F150’s on dealer lots, some of the lower trims with 4 wheel drive can be found in the 45K range which is where the new Tacoma and Ranger are pricing.
and... the cheapest "cheap truck" is still over 31k for the 2 wheel drive version. Add 4x4, taxes, fees..... and your at 40k for a "cheap truck". Pre-covid you get get a 4x4 base Tacoma for 25k. No thanks.
No trucks are affordable in Canada. Yes, the Ridgeline is the best buy, only if you take into consideration, reliability. I still have my 2006 Ridgeline. Now with 270,000km and still running strong. I have had to do regular maintenance such as tires, brakes, spark plugs, battery, windshield, and timing belt. The only thing that broke is the Navigation and the LCD Odometer. Everything else works great. I stupidly loaded around 3,600 pounds into it, hauling tile. I was not thinking, but nothing got hurt. I confirmed the weight because I could calculate the weight of tiles per box and that is very accurate. I confirmed by 2 witnesses that my local dealer, the Service Manager had around 750,000km on the Ridgeline - with original engine and transmission. Try that with a Colorado or Maverick... An older Tacoma might do that though.
Impressive load… not that one should try it. I saw an older guy with a 90’s 4 cyl Tacoma with the same mileage 750K km. The body was in very bad shape rusty and all but engine ran smooth. He was waiting for delivery of his brand new 23 Tundra a retirement gift to himself.
I have a 2017 Ridgeline with 190k still running strong. Just regular maintenance done. I love my Ridgeline V-6 🛻
I remember being on a gmc lot in 2020 and seeing the chevy WT1500 with a 5.3 liter and radio and ac for only $28K. That was a cheap, good entry level truck that would last you for years. THAT IS WHAT WE WANT TODAY.
I had a couple of V6 Frontiers years ago and in 9 years of ownership, I only ever had to perform periodic maintenance; never had to take them in for repairs (not counting being rear ended twice while at stop lights). Back seat became too small for growing family so I've had four F-150s since and every one of them were constantly going back to have warranty work done on them.
Ford quality is trash , if the maverick is a low price, and people are purchasing them right off the lot, wait and see ….
Agreed. Just unloaded my trash F150 for a Ridgeline. Never again Ford.

A Maverick is not a truck. It's a car with a bed. IT DOESN'T HAVE A FRAME!
Neither does a Humvee
I would seriously consider a Ridgeline but they are expensive for sure.
As far as i am concernd any truck big or small that doesnt have an 8 ft box is pretty much useless as a truck.
I have a New frontier love it
Turbos expensive to maintain and thirsty.
My turbos hasn’t cost me a dime in 6 yrs, and it’s no more thirsty than any other engine when being pushed. It’s still more powerful and economical than a n/a engine
dealerships stocking higher trim options of the Maverick on their lot doesn't really make the truck controversial, it just points to how people on car lots tend to make emotional decisions and want all the features when they drive the different trims and models. like you said, you can order one online, but the instant gratification you point to wanting on the lot is exactly why they make more on higher trim stock.
also that 2024 Lariat trim was pretty nice.
Feature wise the Ridgline is about the same price, has way better resale and the transmission won’t nuke itself in 60k miles….
It doesn’t come in olive drab though 😂
If resale and reliability were factored you’d be 100% wrong….that’s pretty good. It’s hard to be ALL wrong….😂
If Nissan didn’t kill the stick shift, the Frontier would be a home run.
If you're going to blow $30k to 40K on a new or used Nissan Frontier... why not just buy a used non turbo V6 Tacoma? That is what I'm going to do. No hybrids, No turbos for me.
True, but some people like to get brand new trucks vs 10k-40k miles on used tacoma at those prices. Plus higher hp, torque and better transmission.
@@mikos2k1 What truck has a better transmission than a naturally aspirated V6 Tacoma? (just curious)
In every video, people complain about the gear searching 6-speed transmission in the 3rd gen Tacoma. The Frontier is a NA v6 with a 9-speed automation transmission.

Great video! I have a new 2023 Ford Ecoboost...can you provide details on the additional maintenance that would be required because the truck has a turbo and is not NA like the Nissan? There is no additional maintenance in regards to turbos in the provided Ford manual that came with the truck and I do not want to miss anything. Also, where are you getting your NA vs turbo reliability data?
Cheap truck ???
When the Maverick was released, its cheapest model was 20k, not 25k.
That Maverick is NOT a truck, the bed is too small to "pickup" anything. And, who needs a crrewcab when you just want to pickup stuff.
Ford Maverick is essentially a Ridgeline with a Ford stamp, not a real truck IMO. Although I do like the Nissan Frontier because of its naturally aspirated engine, they have a bunch of transmission issues that can't be ignored. Personally, I would go with a Chevy Colorado or Toyota Tacoma not only because it looks like how a truck should be but has a decent-sized bed with fewer recalls overall than the others, especially Ford.
I have one. The bed size is annoying compared to my long bed, yet we often take it camping and on hardware/lumber store runs because the mileage is three times higher.
Exactly
If you say so. I got a Maverick and have already used it dozens of times to haul plenty of things like furniture. Sure I'm not like bringing gravel, bricks, or rebar to a construction site, but nobody has ever advertised the Maverick for that kind of use. It serves its purpose perfectly in my opinion.
i mean, it is. though i agree, they should offer a standard cab with a longer bed. but overall it ticks the boxes for most average consumers, doing more than a sedan/van/SUV even if it doesn't handle the edge cases bigger trucks can handle (renting a truck from U-Haul for those instances isn't expensive). i love my '18 F-150 and am glad i got the long bed for hauling larger things, but i'd rock a Maverick np.
The mud flaps you would keep literally look as low or slightly lower than the side steps. The side steps are very helpful and you May wish you had them after getting rid of them.
I was told by Nissan dealers that you could not order a Frontier. I was interested in buying a new one last year. After taking a Titan Pro4X for a test drive I bought a new Titan. The seat supports my old back perfectly. I'm loving my new Titan Pro4X!
Nissan truck for me in the midsize.
not that many people want these small ass trucks, the price of these little dudes were the same prices of the full size trucks before
I think the V6 in the spacious feature packed Ridgeline is the best cheap truck available. It also has standard AWD.
I have a 2009 Nissan Frontier Pro 4x that I bought new in late 2008. This has been one reliable truck and has aged very well for over 14 years with 170,000 miles. The V6 still runs strong and performs well and everything still works. The new Frontier really is a sharp looking truck and wouldn’t think twice about getting another one but I just can’t depart from mine yet.
If you want to find a new tacoma check the repair bay...front diff failure right from the get go.very plastic disposeable junk!!!

I love that the Frontier is a naturally aspired larger engine as opposed to a small, turboed, eco-boost bs engine. I bought a 2019 in 2020 for less than $20K and that thing rocks. Covid increased used car prices and my 19 is worth more today than when I bought it (still). Best thing is, it may be small, but is in every way a true truck.
The problem with the 23 is that warranty will already be running not for the mileage, but the time.
Ridgeline wins in my book!
Lariat trim on a maverick just shows me Ford still isn't serious about what 'affordable small truck' means. I am hoping Toyota can get the Stout into the USA for $25K out the door.
