- The all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma has had a ROUGH start. People have not shown much interest in this new midsize pickup truck, which is really sad considering it's reputable legacy. The new 4 cylinder Tacoma disappoints for many reasons. The tiny engine, made in Mexico quality control, tiny back seat, and most of all... the RIDICULOUS price tag.
In this video I peel back the layers of this onion more. I talk through the specific reasons why sales have plummeted for the new Tacoma this first quarter. I showcase some of the competition and their price tags by comparison. We look at the Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger, and GMC Canyon here. All of which appear to a better bang for your buck now. People are voting with their pocket books. Toyota enthusiasts who have followed the brand for decades are peeling off. They're not sold on the garbage Toyota is putting out now. It's not a great truck and certainly doesn't much peace of mine. A naturally aspirated V6 platform is what truck people want. They want THREE THINGS: 1) Reliability, 2) Simplicity and 3) Affordability. That's it! Is that too much to ask Toyota? cmon.

@@mrvang8077 It made sense when the 1st and 2nd gens where known to go 500,000 miles with minimal issues. 2001-2004 Double Cab TRD SR5 4x4's sold for $20,000 used even when the trucks were 15 years old!
You're paying for those high Mexican wages.
No more sense than a home selling for 60,000 in 1980 and now 600,000.........it's called inflation and people are now finally realizing that there is no changing it......why ? because now it's hitting home like never before. The days of pretending you have the funds to buy what you want on credit are now becoming the time of buying what you can afford. Reality check won't bounce.

NOT true. I bought a new Mazda 323 5speed in 1988 for 10k. That was a cheap car. That is equal to 26k in 2024. I paid 25k a yr ago for a Nissan Sentra SV with heated seats, steering wheel, remote start. A MUCH better car.
I have a Saab 9-5 that cost 35k in 2003. That's the equivelant to 59k today. I believe i can get a new luxury sedan for that amount.
@wyomarine6341 I was addressing the 1st statement he made. A car that explodes with plastics is a safer car than a steel reinforced interior like my 1st car a 72 Cutless Supreme. I wouldn't want to get hit in my old '88 323 or '79 Subaru which i would descibe as sardine cans. Good thing i never was. Today's cars are quality in engineering and design. The end of my Saab will be rusting metal not plastics

@Playingwithproxies "rich kids" is a relative term. I grew up in a small Midwestern town where the "rich kid" got a brand new Eagle Talon when she turned 16, my ex grew up in the suburbs of Milwaukee and the rich kids got Ferraris.
I drive a 94 Nissan hardbody that I paid $1,100 for six years ago, so anyone spending $50K+ on a vehicle is rich to me. When I lived in San Diego and Tucson, the rich kids were driving souped up Tacomas where the suspension upgrades on one wheel cost more than my truck. Yet most of them rarely or never went off roading, it was just a prop to make them appear that they lived an outdoorsy "lifestyle"
I completely understand his perspective. Recently, I was in the market for a new truck and was taken aback by the high prices. I had my eye on the TRD models, but they were priced at $60,000 and above. After careful consideration, I decided to wait and eventually opted for a well-maintained, pre-owned 2015 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport. This decision 😎😎allowed me to get a reliable and capable vehicle without breaking the bank.

@@Pb_Slingerit's a 2.4 liter not a 2.7 liter. You're probably thinking about the GM 2.7 that's in the Canyon/Colorado which is a powerful engine.

Toyota's CEO quit in 2023 for a reason, there were changes he wasn't willing to make because he understood his consumer. He knew what made their brand, and he wasn't willing to compromise... obviously others were, but as they are finding out, the old CEO understood the consumer better.

Toyota has been using the “low supply” business model for decades, I just don’t think they expected this Tacoma to be a flop.
Supplying just enough vehicles to meet demand is smart business practice. Using the limited supply to let dealers overcharge customers is a bad outcome to a good idea.

This. Frontiers are still built in thee US and are coming there pro4x is coming in 15k lower than the TRD. The TRD with Mexican labor rates should come in at 20 percent less than a comparable frontier.
No reason for them to discount until the sales tank, which it isn't clear if they have. They will just give $1500 off or something small like that as an incentive.
@SiXiam true, but as a long time toyota fan and sombody who literally purchased a used 2015 avalon hybrid as a commuter car two days ago. I'm simply not a buyer of current line up. The tacoma with Mexican labor should undercut the frontier built with US labor. Same thing applies to their shit box prados that they are dumping on the US market.

I have been a Toyota fan boy for over 45 years and currently own 2 Tacomas. the quality control has slipped from Japan made, to made in USA, and now made in Mexico. I have owned 13 Toyota trucks, and some of Toyota trucks made it past 450 thousand miles, and ran great. the product has slipped quite a bit but the Toyota dealers in central Florida operated like organized criminals in pricing of as much as 10 k one sticker price. It not so much the declining product, but the ruthless Toyota dealers. I predict Toyota dealers in central Florida, will turn into used car lots. I will never buy another Toyota product again! eat dirt Toyota!
You’re definitely not being too harsh, Toyota has lost their way. I purchased a 2024 Frontier SL with leather seats, sunroof fully loaded for 44k and I feel like I got a great deal. Many Toyota dealers are still charging over msrp.
Toyota has really been watering down their engines over the last few years. V-8s have become turbo V-6s, and V-6s have become turbo I-4s. starting with the 2025 model, you can no longer buy a non-hybrid non-turbo Camry. Toyota keeps shooting themselves in the foot, and I will never buy another Toyota as long as they keep doing this.

@@douglasscovil3447 not a brand thing but a zero emission one read my comment above all brands do that not only on trucks but everything, they started nerfing car engines at least since 2022 and starting from 2024 models they pretty much removed everything but the weakest engines kept only hybrids 2025 might see the end of new car sales and crazy used car prices you don't see it yet in the USA but it's coming and your comment proves to me it's already starting that's how it began in europe 20hp here 50hp there then deflated displacement engines then disappearing engines and for 2025 several brands completely stop selling proven classics for example the subaru legacy outback which sells well in EU

People want naturally aspirated V6 or V8 engines built in the USA or Japan. People do not want small engines with turbochargers.

I saw a brand new black Tacoma today before I watched your video and my first impression was that it was kind of ugly. It hurt to think that way because I thought my next vehicle might be a new Tacoma. I’m still driving my 2009 TRD Sport. I’m not ready to spend $50-$55k on a midsize truck. I think they’re way too pricey. And the truck is far from being great looking.
Only one answer to that. Put the V6 back in that truck. And watch them fly off the shelves

People can’t afford $45k plus for a compact trucks . Full size trucks also very expensive. I need a pick up truck for my landscape business BUT they want a lot for these trucks and interest is insane . So I will keep using my old truck.

I agree that the new Tacoma prices are way too high. I was thinking of trading/selling my 20+ year old Tacoma for a 2024, but the prices have dampened by excitement. When my 2003 Tacoma dies, I will take a look at what is out there.

If i was in the market for a pick up, I'd go with a nissan. I don't want more complicated parts in my engine. I want a v6, I'll take a v8 actually, but will take no less than a v6.
Frontier pro 4x is a fantastic truck. I have only test drove one but man I’ll tell you the quality was noticeable, panel gaps were as good as you like get, zero excess cabin noise, the bilstein shocks felt extremely comfortable just on city streets. Solid power numbers and good tow capacity. And also while you do get some good tech..it’s not an overbearing amount that gives them an excuse to jack the price up. I plan to buy one within the next year or so when I am ready for a new vehicle.
Nissan should do a $40K rugged SUV off that platform.
I bought a ‘24 Pro4X for ~ $45k- excellent truck. Almost bought a Tacoma Pro 2 years ago- so glad I didn’t pull the trigger. This truck is more comfortable and quiet and a better ride than the Tacoma and honestly, while the Taco is a beast off-road, I believe the Frontier is not that far behind it.
I drove the new Frontier Pro 4X a little while ago and loved it. As compared to the third gen and especially the fourth gen Tacoma. My only two complaints about the Frontier were the crappy backup camera, and the headrests with the cloth seats are the worst i've ever experienced. Aside from that, it's a better truck.
I walked away too. I purchased a 2024 titan and love it. Let's not forget these new engines require premium fuel. Not only are you paying more for the truck you are also paying more to drive it per mile.

Was interested in a Tacoma, even used the prices are outrageous for mileage. Just bought a 22 Certified preowned Nissan Frontier 4x4 for $27k with less than 20k miles. Comes with remaining 7yr/100k warranty.
V6 and 9 speed auto, it moves.

I drive a 1999 Avalon. Twenty five years old. Runs like new. Everything about this car is pure quality. My engineer brother used to travel around the world visiting car plants. He always told me Toyota is the only car he would own. What the hell happened?
It ain't made in Japan. That's what happen. It's made in Mexico where everything is made of cheap plastic. And the workers are getting paid 5 cent an hour.
Get a Tundra, it's the most American truck made, 70% built here and the other 30% comes from Canada. It's too bad they went the v6 turbo route for the Tundra, or i'd say get a newer Tundra, 2021 and below only.
Toyota is just starting to repeat all of the mistakes that were made by Ford, including assembling vehicles in Mexico with underpaid and underskilled workers. They have moved away from the larger naturally aspirated V-6s and V-8s. They are forcing people who want the Camry to buy only a more expensive hybrid. This is just so sad, Toyotas used to be the absolute best.

I needed to make the jump from my Taco to a Tundra, and ended up going to a Titan instead because of the inflated prices and the twin turbo V6. So far, it’s been a pleasant surprise. I slept on Nissan trucks and I believe it’s Nissan just failing to market their V8 option like they should have been doing. Lots of power. A reliable nat aspirated V8, rear locker, huge cabin, heated seats standard for my Pro4X, with just enough tech to not be annoying. And at a significantly lower cost than the competition.

I have a 2023 Frontier Pro 4x in Glacier white. It is a great vehicle, I got the transmission update and it sorted out the sharp shifting when in cruise control. Nissan never made the Frontier to be a class leader, but to be a competent vehicle, and it can do everything competently

Toyota missed it with the 4cyl turbo. The hybrid is somewhat tolerable because of the high torque. We're already seeing overheating turbos on larger tires in snowy conditions. What happens when people tow in the south?

Crazy when Toyota introduces an all new redesigned Tacoma and they just SIT upon arrival. That’s a first… hopefully a huge wake up call to the manufacturer. People are no longer just buying it because it’s a Toyota. 👌

All we wanted was a steak sammich and Toyota gave us overpriced avocado toast.
Well, now its Toyota who is eating a $hit sandwich with their new Tacoma launch. They slowed production of their launch so that they don't saturate the dealerships with more unmovable 2024 Tacoma inventory. Hell, look at the new Tundra inventory...Toyota wants to keep Tacoma production inventory levels lowerer now so as to give the illusion that these P'sOS are in demand, except that plan didn't work. I "was" not a Toyota loyalist because of the name plate, I exclusively bought Toyotas because of their product quality, reliability and cost to purchase (value). Seems Toyota forgot all three of these consideration on their new trucks.
Untamed I think you have every right to keep harping on Toyota about their changes because it's the customer who gets screwed with all the changes Toyota has decided to implement.

@@KUBBI7488 I don't think you could have gotten any new Tacoma for $20K just 5 years ago. Only configuration that would have come close would have been a 4x2 SR 4-cyl Access Cab with Utility Package and nothing else. And those mostly went to fleet buyers.

5. The engine sounds AWFUL
6. No backseat room at all

Back in August, I bought a 2015 Tacoma with the 4.0, made in June of 2015, so right at the end of the second generation. I love the 5 speed and the V6- it is a great combination. And with mixed driving in town, I am getting between 18-20 MPG, granted it is summertime- but I am very happy with that! With the prices of new trucks, they really are not more efficient for the price. And the quality of the later second gens is very good as well. I can't envision any small displacement turbo gas engine would last as long as a non-turbo engine.

I bought my 2022 Frontier back in November of 2021 when they first started hitting the dealerships lots. It’s a great truck with plenty of bang for my buck and it cost me around 40k out the door. My son just bought himself a 2024 frontier last week and only spent a total of 42k. And his has so much more on his, enough to the point that I’m even jealous of what he’s got. 42k and its got tons of options built into it. Nissan has got their thumb on the pulse right now and they’re putting out good quality trucks. I haven’t regretted my purchase once since I bought it.
I hope more people buy the Frontier! Maybe then, they will decide to give us manual again.
Don’t buy turbo unless you want to replace it soon.

Yeah Turbos usually start showing age at 80k miles or so. I had a ecoboost F150 but I didn’t mind it. I got a Tacoma and it’s awesome! But if you don’t want to replace the turbos and extra maintenance on the turbos, look for a naturally aspirated engine
My '15 F150 is on it's original turbo.
My '07 Volvo has 233k on the original turbo.

Toyota needs to salvage the sales on the tacoma. Bring back the 4.0 v6 and offer the supercharger option again on the tacoma. And offer a V8 option in the tundra.

Thank you for your presentation. $2.70 per hour in Mexico!! 4 cylinder and higher prices across the model lineup will likely mean sales losses to Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Ford Ranger and Ford Maverick, Nissan Frontier (has a standard V6). It's no wonder they are having fewer sales. Those fewer sales will likely continue. I agree with your comments on the Toyota 4Runner with its 4.0 V6 (it's bulletproof)!!!
You are spot right with the Tacoma. Last fall of 2023, I had a Nissan Frontier Pro4X as my #3 choice in interest, having in order the Tacoma at #1, Ranger #2, and then the Pro4X in 3rd. Seeing the prices Toyota was going to charge and only Turbos available and how my 2018's Ford F-150 quaility engineering started failing being only 5 years old. My F-150 had a common lug nut metal reaction issue, had to replace 24 of them, tailgate latch release corrosion leading to not being able to open my tailgate, rear camera failure, step sides turning ugly, Ford moved out of ranking pretty quickly. Come on Ford, 5 years old and simple engineering issues. In January 2024 I purchased the Pro4X and have no regrets. The price is right, love the hydraulic steering, solid side steps, plenty of power, great looks. I am loving every minute of the Pro4X right now. Great video!
I bought a 2023 Pro 4x in November. I live rurally and traded in my 2018 Genesis G80 Sport in (which was reliable), but I love my Frontier.

@@telcobilly Another issue that I failed to mention was with the oil consumption on my 5.0L V-8. I had to put two quarts of oil in at 4,000 miles after my last oil change. I would change my oil every 5,000 miles. The first time it happened I thought the dealer shorted me an incomplete fill at the oil change, then it happened again. I asked the dealer what is with that? He said it is a common issue. I loved the power and sound from that V-8, but again, come on Ford, especially with today's engineering, really?

Look, AS a LONG TIME DODGE RAM & JEEP GLADIATOR owner, I FINALLY ( this year ) said I was going to "BUY ME a Tacoma"... I was SICK of the value loss of my Ram Pickups, even though I took care of them pristinely.... The devaluation of my Jeep Gladiators I owned was not as bad....
So, I go to my nearest Toyota dealership ( unknowingly, regarding Tacoma's 4 Cylinder ONLY engine availability ) and say "I want to test drive your TOP of the Line Tacoma, with the most powerful engine available... Salesperson excited, we get in this beautiful black Tacoma, leather seats, beautiful dashboard.... I start in up and we take a drive out on the he freeway.... No POWER.... I ask him what's the engine size in this : " 4 Cylinder, but it's got a TURBO on it ".... I replied, NO, I want at least a 6 cylinder... Dales man says "Nope, as far as Tacoma's go, they're ALL 4 Cylinder now.... If you want a 6 cylinder, you must upgrade to a Tundra ".... Then he lied : "Hey, the 2024 Gladiators only come with a 4-cylinder now"... 👈🏽LIAR ‼️ They come with 6 cylinder Pentastar engines... Power enough for me ✅✅✅

I own a 2014 Tundra V-8 with just 73k miles and from what I see now on the dealer lots I will never sell my truck.
My 2016 V-8 Tundra SR5 Crew Max listed at $51k CAD. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned and it’ll be going to the grave at the current truck prices. Nuts!!!

My friend replaced his 4Runner with a brand new 2023 Tundra, and he is really upset with the quality issues with the new Tundra. There are several squeaks and creeks from the cabin and bad wind noise, and the dealer declines to accept the quality issues. He never faced any issues with his 4Runner and expected better quality from a $70k truck. Quality is a concern for sure, maybe you are on to something .
Man I’m sorry to hear that. I know the feeling all too well… the fit and finish in my 2023 Tundra TRD Pro and 2023 Sequoia TRD Pro was nowhere near that of the Japan-built 4Runners and Land Cruisers I had before. It’s a shame.

Yep. I’m one of them. Body on frame, naturally aspirated engines. Durable. I felt comfortable paying a small premium knowing I was getting a well made vehicle that would last. I won’t consider anything in Toyota’s line up now that they’ve killed the 4Runner now.

Toyota's problem is they raised prices for unreliable trucks that underperform. They focused on gadgets while they neutered the engine and focused on looks over quality control.
Neutered? The four makes substantially more horsepower and torque across the entire RPM range VS the V6.

I enjoyed this video and found it very informative, the most important thing to myself is cost and affordability, taking into consideration cost of ownership with increasing fuel prices and interest rates. I like trucks but in reality I do not need one, so most of the time my truck is parked in the driveway and we us my wife's more comfortable fuel efficient paid for car. I lament on the good old days..

For yaks and bikes and coolers , chairs etc. Plus maybe hauling a pop-up or fishing boat . The 2.7 NA is fine for lots of people , "IF" they fixed the BS transmission , or better yet . Make it with a Manual . I think we will see massive Sales of the Stout towards the end of this year . If Toyota can keep it a AWD and under 25K , as they have said . Maverick sales will drop like a rock . But I do understand that for real WORK , and hauling of large boats and trailers ... the V6 NA and V8 ARE needed !

My neighbor recently got one of those Tacomas and I couldn’t understand why he likes it so much, but he’s happy so that’s cool. It did, however, have the check engine light come on shortly after he bought it and he had to drive a loaner for a couple of weeks while Toyota fixed it; speaks to the QC you mentioned.

The V6 is what I was looking at last year with the 6 speed manual. For about 2 months I was building one that I somewhat liked. I wanted a manual transmission truck and Tacoma was the one I liked. The required configuration was V6, 4x4, 6 speed manual, crew cab with short box.
But I really wanted a Tacoma with the 6 speed manual with a v6 engine long box, crew cab and two wheel drive. Maybe later Toyota switches back to a more reliable V6 platform and still have the manual transmission option.
Price, engine, competition. If there was a 4cl, 4cl hybrid, 6cl, 6cl hybrid options in every trim level, I bet price and competition wouldn't be such a big issue.

Traded in my 16 Tacoma for a 2024 maverick hybrid. It has been rock solid with 44.8 mpg observed after 1000 miles of interstate and 3000 miles around town.

Haha, I did the same thing. I had a 2023 Frontier Pro4X for two months with 800 miles, then bought a brand-new 2023 TRD Sport Tacoma. That Frontier was too bulky and heavy for my taste, and the turning radius was so annoying when maneuvering in parking lots.

I've owned two 5th gen 4Runners and had a 3rd gen Tacoma in between. The paint was so thin I had rock chips and very minor but visible rust in the first month of ownership. I agree, the high price and lack of a naturally aspirated option are real deal-breakers. However, I have high hopes for the upcoming 4Runner. Built in Japan, I trust the quality will be top-notch. Honestly, I like seeing a 'J' at the beginning of my vehicle VIN. Don't let your foot off their necks, there's enough Toyota RUclipsr shills.

I most certainly agree with the statement that quality control is not there. I sold my 2017 Tacoma back in 2021 due to Quality Control Issues and I paid way too much for what I received. So it appears that Toyota is only concerned with its Shareholders these Days and Not Us Consumers!

Sold my 2016 Tacoma as well. Couldn't deal with the terrible transmission shift points. Had several recalls too. Only thing I miss is Totyota's service centers are large and a lot of staff.
I bought a "used" 2024 with less than 500 miles on it. No tranny tsb. Fairly well loaded. For $9K off the sticker price. 4500 miles later it runs great. The back seat isn't any smaller than the previous gen IMO. Power is good. Features are far better than the 2023. Ride is better. Handling is better. It tows with no problem. People look for a reason to hate.

I was so interested in the 24 Tacoma's.. What scared me away was the unproven turbo 4, and price. I ended up buying a 24 loaded Pro4x. $49k+ sticker for just under $47k. The same Tacoma sport (The model I wanted) was almost $57k for not as many options as my 4x. The 6 cylinder is so smooth., Very happy with my choice.
If you take care of your Pro4x, it can last past 1 million miles.
Former 3gen owner. Just bought a 2024 TRD Sport. Best Decision of my life. Vehicles drives 10x better than 3rd gens. Everyone doesn't like the new engine because it's a cylinder turbo charged vs the old v6 model. Get off your high horse.. both output the same horse power hp and the 4th Gen has more torque. Makes no sense the 3rd Gen humpers
They need to drop the price by 8k to 11k.

Just purchased a new 24 Tacoma TRD off road for 43k. Traded in my 23 Chevy Colorado as it had a lot of quality control issues with panel gaping not uniform, cowling separating at both ends, poor sound proofing, and dead battery issues almost on a weekly basis. Now compared to the 24 Tacoma I’d have to say that they both have great performance, torque, and styling. The Tacoma rides better, engine sounds better, a has better suspension. I also paid approximately the same price for both. The interior of the Tacoma is much better overall vs the Colorado. Totally happy with my purchase.

I totally agree with you. I went to purchase a new Access cab with the v6, just like my current 2014 model. Totally disappointed and frustrated that they bastardized the back seating area and did away with the swing out doors and the elimination of the v6. I looked at the Nissan, drove it, liked it except for the front cowl labeling of Frontier. Toyota had a great thing going but they made a Hugh mistake with this new platform. I will not purchase one, either look for a used older one with low mileage or just keep my 2014. I hope Toyota hears the message. Even their own sales people hate this new model.
