      Renault have tried it, and they also tried battery leasing. People didn't like either of them. And guess what. NIO is trying it again. People won't accept it, and certainly not the battery leasing. People hated that with renault.

    Just finished my intern job at NIO, if we don't look at the products that tesla n neo made, the customer services before and after u bought nio is way better tbh. Im not a big electric car fans but the experience that work in NIO actually surprised me. A lady bought a ES8 from us n drove back to her city she found that she cant actually charge her car on her parking space as the apartment manager refused to let her to set up a charger at her parking space, then she called us n asked our colleague, the NIO dealer decided to give her free batteries swap 4 times per week. Hi Alexander, for mobile phones, it'll be tricky making that trip back in time. There is a lot of giveaways for such a move. Say; Waterproofing, Dust proofing, sales volumes for new phones, since every year a flagship piece is released by the manufacturers.
      For, Electric cars, this move by NIO has surely caused chills for all competitors in the electric car manufacturing business

      @@paulsagyiri8151 Not really as battery swapping has been tried already, and failed. Was tried by Tesla, abandoned due to lack of interest. Was tried in Israel, went bust. Once you get 500 miles of range, what is the point of swapping the battery? That is enough to commute for over 3 weeks in the USA, a month in Europe without charging the car.
      Even a road trip in the USA, it would be enough for 5 to 6 hours of driving. After that much driving, most people would want to stop for food and restrooms, and the 30 to 40 minutes after it takes to fast charge a car wouldn't be much of a time penalty.

    • @redbaron6805
      @redbaron6805 3 года назад +1

      @@andrewbennett137 I think you are missing the point a bit. With an EV with 250 miles of range and long charging times, you could make a case for battery swapping, a weak case, but at least a case for it.
      With the new EV's having 500 miles of range and being able to fast charge in about 20 minutes, battery swapping makes very little sense. It also makes far less sense in the USA where a lot of people have homes with garages and driveways where you can charge your car at home.
      Keep in mind for battery swapping stations to make financial sense, they have to have quite a few cars doing swaps. The interest in this has never been really demonstrated on a large scale, and even NIO has a small fraction of the number of battery swapping stations compared to Tesla Superchargers even in China.
      So, the math on this really doesn't add up. NIO will never recover the capital and running costs of the swapping so the odds of this ever taking off are rather slim. It doesn't matter if it takes 10 minutes to swap the battery if it takes you a 2 hour round trip to get to the swapping station.

      The battery swap is a gimmick that is not scalable. Their batteries take about an hour to charge (the biggest ones) and so if you want to have 5 minute swap at full operational capacity of a changing station you need 12 of those for every changing stall. If you throw different sizes into the mix, you need multiples of those. Imagine how expensive those stations will be. Also if you charge at home most of the time, the swappable battery only adds cost, weight and space. Charging gets faster and faster to the point it will soon won't matter that much and for those charging at home it's actually more convenient than having a gas car, because you don't have to go to the gas station at all and you start your day with a fresh charge every day.

    Fascinating video about a brand I think we'll hear much about over the next few years. The design of their vehicles is, to my eye, very appealing ...... I particularly like the ET7 model.
    The battery swapping idea is a stroke of genius and could be a real game changer. At the moment they're clearly focussed on models to rival Tesla but I think it's very likely they will enlarge their range to include smaller, more affordable models that will be very appealing to mass markets around the world ............ at prices that Tesla and European manufacturers won't be able to match, let alone beat.
    They, like other Chinese EV manufacturers, have an advantage over established motor manufacturers. They aren't bogged down by the: "we've always done things this way" thinking and started from a clean slate. They have clearly learned very quickly and the speed with which they've already launched several models is a clear sign of their capabilities.
    Would I buy one? Yes I think I would if the package met my needs and was competitively priced. Let's face it, how many things do any of us buy nowadays that isn't already made in China?

    There are so many advantages that battery swap has. They are as follows:
    1. Purchase the car with the smallest battery contact. This will make the car purchase more affordable and still more than adequate for city driving. When it is required to drive out of town, the owner can arrange to swap for the largest capacity battery and pay only for the number of days in use. When requirement for the larger battery capacity is no longer required, it can be swap back to the smallest capacity battery. This gives the owner greater flexibility beyond imagination.
    2. The battery will always be 100 percent capacity capable even when the EV is more than 10 years old. This way, the owner never have to worry about the degradation of the battery thus the 2nd hand value of the car will hold better.
    3. When technical advancement of battery technology improves, the EV owner will always benefit from the latest battery technology thus the car will not be out of date. Imagine that it is almost like being able to swap for a new ICE whenever there is a new technological leap.
    4. Quick and safe top-up.

      It will absolutely fail. Here are my thoughts.
      1. The battery is the most expensive part of the car and the most heavily innovated part. Holding these assets for more than 2 years is like buying a PC. It is quickly outdated by newer tech. Great for customers, bad for the OEM.
      2. Every battery in the swap routine must be fully charged every time. This will cause all of those batteries to fail much sooner than permanent batteries where an owner takes care to not charge to 100% all the time.
      3. If the lease entitles a driver to 6 swaps per month......then every owner will purposely make use of the 6 swaps or feel as though they left some money on the table. So all those batteries will have a high turnover, and be constantly charged to 100% every time......not good for the OEM, but great for the customers.
      4. Those swap stations will require a lot more maintenance than any charging network. They will fail and the queue will back up. Road dirt, grime, snow, and mud will all accumulate unless each car is given a bath prior to the swap. All of that contamination will cause failures. Each station will need to be constantly manned by an employee in case a car becomes stuck inside. Not good for anyone.
      5. Most customers will not arrive to a swap station at 0% SOC. What happens? I don't know? Are they given an energy credit on their bill for their remaining charge? Or does NIO get to keep the excess?
      Disclosure: I owned NIO stock from $12 and sold out at $48. If it drops to $30 I might buy some more, but I am not a long term investor until someone can discredit my thought on this battery swap thing. It is a customer gainer, but a big time money loser.....BIG TIME! Anyone chasing this stock to $300 while they increase their install base of swap stations is a fool in my opinion......do your own research, blah, blah, blah.

      You're right, the car market is big and Tesla will continue to dominate. However, with manufacturers like Audi, Merc, Bmw and Volvo who have had a long history and that are entering the EV segment more each year, I think NIO would struggle to convince buyers simply because they are from China. Tesla would have a 50-60% market share in the automobile industry if EVs become mainstream due to their SuperCharger Network which is proprietary and Tesla exclusive. There can only be so many suitable charging stations in a city and Tesla has most if not all of them.

    Nio really have the potential, I watched live Nio Day and I was more impressed by Nio than Tesla during Battery Day. They have plans to come to Europe by the end of the year and battery swap would really be a break through. If they are successful here and get into the US market within 10-15 years Nio might be as big if not bigger than Tesla.

    Battery swapping is the way to go. Even if you swap the battery out once a year, you don't have to worry about supercharging the battery too often (degrading the battery). Also, as the battery technology improves, there will likely be a way to keep your car upgraded with the new battery type. With a Tesla, the battery you get with the car is what your stuck with.

    • @someghosts
      @someghosts 3 года назад

      1) tesla had battery swapping in 2013, but didn't continue because no one used it www.tesla.com/en_AU/videos/battery-swap-event
      2) As battery technology improves, the need to find a way to work around charging time decreases. Talk to people that actually own electric cars and ask them how much of a pain charging times are.
      3) "With a Tesla, the battery you get with the car is what your stuck with" Is that true? I've heard of people getting warranty replacements on them, so doesn't sound right to me interestingengineering.com/tesla-puts-price-on-model-3-battery-module-replacement-around-5000-7000
      4) how much do modern tesla batteries degrade in your opinion? Is it worth the extra weight and cost of a replaceable battery in order to avoid?

    • @wsu8568
      @wsu8568 2 года назад

      Sounds good on paper but practicality is zero. Are you willing to swap your new car with new battery with some potential old beat up battery degraded battery? Maybe it has unlimited battery warranty? Sounds communism to me.

  • @alexmaddox2255

    I've always thought that swapping the batteries makes so much sense. Especially if the car is designed around skateboard architecture. Its absolutely the quickest way to keep people moving. Others haven't made the leap yet because its complicated to build, own and operate the infrastructure (which is more complicated than charging stations)

    • @baconbuttties
      @baconbuttties 3 года назад +2

      I doubt that battery swapping has a future as charging times will become quicker and charging points will be everywhere. Is the battery in the car yours? How many times can you unscrew and screw back in bolts before threads on car become worn? Do you end up with a more used battery in your car than what you started with?

    Battery swapping only works if you swap new battery to another new battery. Otherwise in few years of such service you just buy new car and can end up with older battery after your first swapping. The same as some guy with 10 years old car will receive new battery for free.
