Nios patented battery swap is in 4 of the 5 recently approved standards in China. And with the battery asset management company Nio recently formed with catl, will supply the nation’s automakers with swappable batteries.
Out of the three major advantages for battery swapping, i rank them this way in terms of its value created 1, Range is no longer a fixed (and depreciating) spec of your car. You can always choose to upgrade to the latest battery technology without changing the car 2, it enables Baas model that widens TAM and the subsequent recurring revenue (say a car lasts 15 yrs and Baas breaks even at 6th yr) 3, last one and most people only talk about, get a full recharge in 5 mins
This goes back to a cultural thing. Americans are more individual-centered, so buying a car needs your own battery. Chinese are more flexible towards owning something, yet having part of it being public. The battery sharing model might be very good in offseting the depreciation in value of the battery pack, by which you would have to exchange your whole Tesla. Both interesting prospects indeed.
Yup markets evolve for different needs not exactly a 1:1 comparison between American and Chinese markets will be interesting to see how both adapt to ev's

For the Nio owners, the good thing is they don't need to choose between charging and swapping. they will always have both and the latest battery technology.
Battery swapping is a necessity for China, because most Urban Chinese lives in Apartments their building might not have the space for personal charging station. or the infrastructure might be too old. Necessity is the mother of inventions. Battery swap is the future, imagine a smart city filled with Internet of Things where everything is connected. Connecting cars with everything else. roadside cameras can communicate with autonomous cars helping it to plan the least congested route. Battery swap stations can also act as mini power storage stations, recharging during off peak periods and, releasing some stored electricity during peak usage hours. China in the future will be the center for this sort of innovation, Huawei is already moving into the Vehicle to everything operating system, Their HiCar system for smart EVs is like Android for Smartphones. Zoomed out, this type of smart IoT can be extended to entire cities, where the a Smart City can efficiently manage traffic, electricity generation and services.
I live in a Shanghai apartment complex. There are tons of personal charging hookups. Tesla did our first one for free. It hooked into the wall right behind our underground parking spot.
@Andres Leon most pre2000 buildings are owned by older generation, they got the apartment before 1980s when government assigned apartments to workers. And I highly doubt those people are gonna purchase an eclectic vehicle. Most nio owners choose swapping batteries probably because there just ain’t many nio charging stations around the city. But Tesla on the other hand has way more users than nio in China so charging station is more common.
@Andres Leon Tesla owners are far more than nio owners. Most of them installed private charging station that sure means most owners have private parking spot. Battery swapping is not meant to replace charging. One of the biggest advantages is that you can choose the capacity of the battery based on your needs. The solution should be: put a 25kWh battery in the car as permanent, so that for short commutes, swapping isn’t needed. Keep space for rest 75-200 kWh for swapping. You can put majorly all charging stations within the cities and put swapping stations outside the cities mostly. A 25kWh battery will also greatly reduce the overall weight of the car, improving range performance, which should come out to be atleast 7km/kWh. That is 170km on a small battery, more than enough.... also, a small battery is faster to charge.
@@merpuffedy it’s Nios annual huge event where they share new releases and upcoming projects. this year they’re going to announce their first sedan the et7 and much more
Not owning the battery eliminates the risk for the client of battery failure or battery loss of capacity. Specifically the last one - loss of capacity is a big advantage to the NIO's battery swapping strategy. When batteries are charged at stations they are not fast charged which protects the battery's capacity. Fast charging and using the battery down to 0% and up to 100% charge are the two highers contributors to battery capacity loss. Also, when the battery is charged In a swapping station the 0 to 10 and 90 to 100% capacity can be locked by software so it doesn't get damaged. And last but not least Nios clients can choose to own or lease a battery.
Explain to me how waiting 5 minutes for your entire car battery to be swapped out is more effective than manually filling your car with gasoline on a time perspective
Umm its quicker than filling up, no need to even go outside of the car, and you can charge at home so you’ll never visit these station unless on a long trip. Unless you live in an apartment in which case both gas and EV will take the same time, but you’ll have a lot more fun in the EV

I'm a little confused as to how it's economical for the carmaker to swap batteries. Doesn't that just give then a ton of extra cost? do they get anything out of having old batteries?
so what if there are 30 cars waiting for a swap. Are you planning to build 10 stations to swap in just one locations. And you'll need lots of locations. it's inefficient expensive system
I think battery swapping is pretty beneficial for the customer. You always can upgrade to the newest battery pack size. Tesla on the other hand you have to buy a brand new car.

One of the major problems of electric vehicles is the devaluation, the devaluation process of ev is more than twice faster than gas pwered vehicles. The main reason is Battery pack's lifecycle is only 7 years and gets outdated by new battery tech in every 3 years. NIOs solution might be a better approach
Model 3 is depreciating very slowly in the US way below average, it's the most popular EV, battery can last 300,000 miles before hitting 80% original capacity. It also gets updates that make it perform better and add functionality after the car was sold. Batteries dont get outdated every 3 years, it takes 10 year to improve them by double.
@@miguellopez3392 the deprecation rate is exponential. Imagine in 5 years the latest battery can be have 900 mile range while being fully charged in 10 mins, how much will the current model 3 worth by then? By having swappable battery you can always enjoy the latest battery technology.

I think Tesla battery swap was a brilliant idea from Elon Musk. But like every genius out there the concept was too far ahead for people to understand. Not saying that charging is a hassle now but having a swap station option would have been great. It was simple to far ahead of us to understand. I bet If they were to bring back the swap station it would be the next best thing to happen for Tesla owners.
Swapping batteries is not a new idea, certainly not too far ahead to be beyond understanding, people have been replacing batteries in all sorts of electronics - even kids do it with toys, when smartphones started making it more difficult it annoyed people.
think about how many pre-charged battery packs they need per swap-station during rush hours when running at 100 car/ hour capacity. They need to built a giant tower to charge those batteries packs.

With the battery swap, you can switch to any battery you want, this year it is coming out with a 150 kwatt battery you can swap into your car. For resale when you sell the car if the person is leasing the battery means that your battery will not fail and if it does they will swap it out for you which leaves a higher resale value because you do not have to worry about a failing battery.

Out of the three major advantages for battery swapping, i rank them this way in terms of its value created
1, Range is no longer a fixed (and depreciating) spec of your car. You can always choose to upgrade to the latest battery technology without changing the car
2, it enables Baas model that widens TAM and the subsequent recurring revenue (say a car lasts 15 yrs and Baas breaks even at 6th yr)
3, last one and most people only talk about, get a full recharge in 5 mins
That 5 minutes is very key!!
With battery swap technology, literally your car is eternally new. innovative idea !
@Mellio Kuang and also because the Chinese know how dangerous global warming is, they experience it first hand, and thus want to help reduce their own impact.
If battery can be swapped, the car value will remain relatively the same. It is good for the consumer and environment
And you can upgrade to newer battery
But bad for business, hence American automakers and politicians will never endorse it
@@somguynamedpaul not really, battery pack is recycled for other device. Business charge consumer for a premium.

I had this same idea with changing the battery’s years ago I always thought why are they charging when they can just pop one out put one in
For the Nio owners, the good thing is they don't need to choose between charging and swapping. they will always have both and the latest battery technology.
@Andres Leon degrading battery is one of the biggest obstacle to EVs retaining their value.
@Andres Leon almost every apartments that were build in last 15-20 years in China has an underground parking lot and a private spot for owners
Most people live in apartment complex with private parking spot. And any buildings post-2000s have parking lot so the numbers of people can have a charging station is still raising. Even though battery swapping is a good idea, but for companies building some charging station is just easier to maintain
Is possible to combine both of the technologies? swap or charging batteries?
5 mins to a fully charged battery, instead of wait for hour to full charged your EV. Take your pick, don't hurry!

Battery swapping is not meant to replace charging. One of the biggest advantages is that you can choose the capacity of the battery based on your needs. You can put majorly all charging stations within the cities and put swapping stations outside the cities mostly. A 25kWh battery will also greatly reduce the overall weight of the car, improving range performance, which should come out to be atleast 7km/kWh.
Tesla is already an central governing enterprises of “you know what “ , theoretically speaking, they are colleague.

There's a monthly subscription fee.
Yesterday night I've dreamed of this idea, now I'm watching and have a hard time to believe....:))
so what if there are 30 cars waiting for a swap.
The main issue is that it's extremely expensive to scale battery swap stations when compared to chargers
You really can’t do that. Where will all the old batteries go? They still have over 95% of their life left so are you just gonna throw it out. Thats like throwing out your phone in a few months just because the new one is better!
And then comes the dreaded subscription mode in which you will have to overall pay twice more than the entire lifetime of a battery pack
i agree, but they need more miles. 260 is too low.
The problem is the cost per month in battery exchange. I think it cost around $ 150.00 per month.

@@tl1960 that's assuming the cars entire price is based on its battery, that's only 30 percent of the cost of the car and that batteries will be that good in 5 years, it will likely take 10 years, then those batteries can be installed in the old tesla.

I think Tesla battery swap was a brilliant idea from Elon Musk. But like every genius out there the concept was too far ahead for people to understand. EV’s were new at the time and people didn’t fully understand the hassle of charging a battery or battery life.
They need to built a giant tower to charge those batteries packs.

i find NIO difficult to scale. setting up battery replacement station everywhere seems a much tougher task than charging point
10 yrs later , you will see battery swap stations like any gas station around the world.
See better place. An Israeli electric car company from the early 2010s. They pioneered the battery switching technology for retail vehicles. They ultimately failed for a number of reasons. Among them were the battery changing stations. They had an issue with breaking down and leaving the driver stranded since the stations were automated
You are probably right. And of course the swapping stations are likely much better than they were 10+yrs ago
You like most people are missing the point, swap technology actually goes beyond just swapping the batteries when you are running low on juice. 1. Nios can be fast charged too. 2. What the true purpose is, is to eliminate a depreciating asset as well as securing monthly revenue. It is good for the company as well as the consumer. Who wants a used Tesla when it is 10 years old? You will have a car with 10 year old battery tech and a suspect battery.
@Neil Graham Only takes my Tesla 30 minutes to charge. I personally don’t like the prospect of having my battery switched out with someone else’s that may be damaged.
The good thing is when the battery gets upgraded, you will be able to enjoy the new version of the upgraded battery instantly.
EV tech is mostly available in China and the US. When will other countries be more open with EVs? I feel like i’m living in a 3rd world country in Malaysia. We’re sliding further and further away by the days
If you’re going through rough times, please don’t give up.
