Tesla Model 3 v BYD Seal: DRAG RACE

- Who’s ready for an EV drag race?!
We’ve got our hands on the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, and it’s facing off against one of the newest small electric cars around - the BYD Seal!
So let’s see whether this all-new Chinese EV can take down the Tesla. Under the skin, you’ll find two electric motors that provide 530hp and 670Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels, and it tips the scales at 2,055kg. If you were looking to pick one up, it’d set you back around £48,000.
Then we come to the Tesla. It also comes with dual electric motors, and these should provide you with 490hp and 490Nm of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels, and it’s a fair bit lighter than the BYD, weighing in at 1,840kg. It’s slightly more expensive, though, costing around £50,000.
So can the new kid on the block snatch it? Or will the Tesla reign supreme? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE! - Авто/Мото
This feels like watching a submarine race. So calm and quiet
"3, 2, 1" ...soft whisper sounds from the library section.
That was quite a race folks!
Me: Was it? I was watching the guy lining up his putt on the green. There was a race happening?
This isn't fart race
😂😅😢
Calm, quiet and boring.
I love watching submarine racing from a cliff top overlooking the sea
Thing about EV drag races is, you don't feel guilty for speeding the video up. You don't loose any exhaust noise.
You really only watch the video for their interaction. The car part is just soulless...

Because Tesla is trying its best to keep manufacturing costs down, the model 3 they sell in China even eliminates the shift knob.BYD's interior is much more refined in comparison.

@Anomize23 , the idea of swapping batteries makes their cars more future proofed then the idea of Elon musk built in throw away cars , both have there merits but I decided on a bought a Lucid saphire , in a sea of white tesla the lucid is easy to find in a pa4king lot , and the idiots in there s model or plaids get a huge wtf when it takes off, yes lucid is not as big as tesla but I do like the new suv
I keep seeing these BYD Seals in shopping malls (In Thailand) and they look / feel really nice inside... I can't afford one but i might see if i can blag a test drive at some point...
I almost bought one in Bang Na last month, but then I got back to my senses.
They're really tempting, hey?
I reckon in a few years when my current Subaru dies, it's time for an EV. I don't mind waiting cause they only get better.
@@dimitriskoutas6114what was your senses? was it due to price or function or value for money? need advise since i am considering to buy 1 EV soon.
@@JemmyRizki an excellent car and beautiful, I would definitely consider. It's just that I had no reason to buy a car.
The Seal dual motor has a weight of about 2,185kg, not 2,055kg. The lower weight is the single motor.
Holy crap that’s 400kg weight difference, that explains why the Tesla was able to keep up despite having less power available.
The tesla also doesnt have 490hp it has 440.
@@kevintieman3616tesla wasn't able to keep up in acceleration, it was only close in the end because the Seal has a lower limited speed.
I have no idea what the other manufacturers are doing to end up with such heavy cars. Same for the Germans… (I also don’t really understand why no one cares in terms of safety. Those 400kg extra will go somewhere when you hit something…)
@@Sadjina The Seal in the flesh is a much more luxurious class of car and quieter on the road. The extra weight seems to be in the construction of the car plus sound deadening materials.

The Seal in Australia is an absolute bargain and much cheaper than it is sold in the UK. I would buy one except for the fact its a sedan and I only ever buy hatchbacks. The Seal is much easier to get in and out of for an older person compared to the Model 3 but I miss the ease of entry/exit of my Model Y I had until recently. It was destroyed in an accident. I have a BYD Atto 3 and whilst smaller than the Tesla MY, is an incredible vehicle with a very impressive ride. Both of these vehicles have their merits and enjoyed both Matt and Sam having fun.

@@EwanM11 If old means Panasonic then no.
@@kleefton Tesla themselves have said the motors and battery are unchanged. There’s a button right next to the gear selector on the BYD Seal to turn on Auto Hold 🤦🏻♂️ So that it doesn’t start driving as soon as you lift off the brake.
Why do you need a botton for that, this is a onetime setting stored in your profile right? It's at least for me, one pedal driving for the win.

The BYD does seem like a much nicer car to be in. It just doesn't look as bland inside and out.
Looks are like frosting on a cake. At times it is frosted card board.
I actually like the look of it ironically😅.
Nicer? Did you not hear all the noise inside the cabin? That screams poor build quality to me.
I used to be a valet driver for a very popular casino.
I loved the job. Drove lots of different vehicles across a wide range of ages..
MANY cars that are made to look pretty, are terrible interior quality.
2 brands that I love and love the look of their cars, but would never buy is Alfa Romeo and Maserati.
Interior build quality and craftsmanship were embarrassing.
BMWs and Mercedes seem to fall apart when the warrenty finishes.
This is what BYD feels like, but worse.
For what it's worth, Build Your Dreams is marketing bs.
Just look at their logo from 2003-2005.
Not the red one, that started in 2005.
Before that.
You will easily recognize who it's a copy of.
The name is also similar to the German logo, BM Double-U. BYD
I first learned of the BMW copy-cat back in 2003, 2004, from my business travels there and seeing their Toyota/Lexus copy-cats styles in person.
Still, today, I see the company as your typical, and very common Big Red counterfeiter for Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, but making cars.

If I had to buy an EV, I’d probably go for a byd just because their blade batteries are puncture proof (wouldn’t catch fire after getting punctured like normal batteries do)
BYD is not the only LFP battery. One would want to look at cold weather performance too. Batteries are a-changin.
@@JacobGuenther-jy8xn I could be wrong but I thought they were the ones who invented the blade batteries and are the only manufacturer using it. Tesla uses the batteries made by CATL, which is a great company but I’m still concerned about safety and repeatability when it comes to ev batteries.

That Model 3 LR did not have the $2,000 boost upgrade. It doesn’t have 490 HP. Probably more like 425 HP or less. The Performance Model 3 makes right at 535 HP at the wheels but only if you preheat the battery to over 120 degrees F and have over 90% State of Charge. The LR isn’t affected by battery temperature like the Performance Model is.
The Highland doesnt have the boost option.

The clunking isnt your suspension but the battery heating up and the coolant getting to temp. The metal casing is segmented to allow heat expansion. Under normal use the car would not do that unless charging.
You mean, the battery casing is popping like a Snapple bottle cap?
The model 3 LR has 320kW of power. It’s limited by BMS. With Aceleration Boost up to 350kW.
The 366kW on papers it’s the sum of both motors, and they do not deliver maximum power at the same time.
If car journalists would understand what BMS means, your comment might be on top :-) The fact that a dyno is about the hardest way to measure power coming from electric motors is very hard to understand apparantly.
What’s 350 kw in normal terms?

Those weird hockey-stick door handles on the Tesla Model 3 and Y are actually pretty clever. The secret is using one's right hand to open doors on the right side of the car, and the left hand for doors on the left side.

You didn't set up the BYD Seal properly - so it's a flawed video. There's a Lap Timer mode on the instrument cluster; when I tested, it made a massive difference in the 0-60mph times - 4.3s down to 3.89s. I'm not sure why either, as it was never explained to us at the press event, but having done multiple launches with the option enabled and disabled, I can safely say it does make a difference; note, I use Racelogic Performance Box Touch with an external GPS unit to ensure accuracy (I didn't rely on the data shown via the BYD's instrument cluster).
