The Tesla Model 3 kick-started the electric revolution in 2019 and remains a huge seller globally. But time doesn’t stand still and the US giant has just released a new, improved version that introduces new exterior design elements, longer ranges and an improved interior. It’s also (slightly) more affordable, with the entry-level model now back under £40,000.
But are the updates enough to keep the Model 3 at the top of the electric saloon sales charts? During its four year production run, Tesla hasn’t been short of rivals but has seen them all off pretty comfortably. The latest contender is from a brand that many won’t have heard of: BYD. Having launched in the UK with Atto 3 and Dolphin supermini, the Chinese giant actually sells more cars than Tesla and has big ambitions for its new European operation.
On paper, the two are very similar with 300+ mile ranges, loads of equipment and similar costs when bought on PCP finance (as 95+% of all new cars are). Join Ginny and Nicola as they pitch the two newcomers head-to-head to find which is the best package.
Do you agree? Which would you choose? Let us know in the comments below.

I've been reading about the regen on the Seal and it seems like they've implemented the regen through the brake pedal. When the pedal is first pressed it engages strong regen and blends the brakes in as needed. It appears this was aimed at people switching from ICE cars. It really is a matter of preference though, I'm on the side of what BYD have implemented to have more control of the car.

Test drove SEAL in Australia over the weekend...Quite, Comfortable with excellent interior and driver ergonomics and driving dynamics. The minimalist approach of TESLA 3 is going to cost them "new" customers, coming from petrol and hybrid cars well used to buttons, indicators, head up displays and Apple car play and android auto. A driver still needs to feel in control, a driving pleasure. Overall, I think BYD wins on ride, buttons with phone integration and a strong design language. Tesla stays strong on charging network and a faster charging, I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla brings back some of it's lost functions in coming years

    • @22Epic
      @22Epic 5 месяцев назад +2

One thing to take into consideration is the updates you get with a Tesla. The BYD infotainment will be dated in 2 years whereas the Tesla will still be updated in 5 years and look relevant. (Check the Tesla infotainment 3 years ago and compare it to now). Also Tesla may not be in the best financial state, but it will likely stays around in the coming years, you can't say the same for Chinese's brands. Last point is the efficiency of the Tesla, in the coming years it will probably cost more to charge a car than to simply put fuel in it, so you may want the most efficient one. The BYD is not a bad, but it's a bet to buy one.

53k miles on a M3, extended test drive on the BYD Seal. The BYD is definitely a more comfortable car to travel in with great quality materials and ride comfort and sound insulation. I also think the BYD looks a bit better. The cabin and the seats are top quality and the exterior is also really nice, looks even better in person. But the M3 (even the old one) is just a bit more fun to drive. Its direct and darty (which I like) charges WAY faster, has the network and also a very large service network. The BYD is in its infancy, driving 100 miles to a service centre at the moment isnt ideal....UI wise the Teslas are also miles ahead. Menus make sense and are intuitive and grouped properly ie Climate/Display/Controls etc. The BYD has a bit of everything everywhere. Menus, pull downs, side swipes. That being said the Seals central screen is something special its so large and so crisp when navigating its a joy. Its also worth noting according BYD any Seals shipped before March come with the indicator on the right stalk and wipers on the left. My test car had this and was a nightmare to adjust to. Apparently the norm in other right drive markets. It also has the most aggressive lane departure system Ive ever seen (Even more aggressive than the MG4). Even an few inches left or right of centre it was dragging you all over the place. Can be turned off no doubt but needs adjusting. Id deffo still recommend it but I think it still needs some maturity and bug ironing to make it a sure thing. Most of that can be done through software so should be easy. Credit to them though honestly it rides as well a C Class/3 Series maybe even a smidgeon better. There arent many EVs that can do that. The new Tesla indicator is a no go for me too 🤣 the New M3 ups its quality considerably but not enough to tempt me for one either... so I'll be hanging on to my old M3 for now. I agree with Ginny that Tesla has gone a tad too far with cost cutting on physical switches. Buttons for indicators are fine on a motorbike but not in a car, keep the fart sound though. I've no idea about how the wipers and screen wash are activated, if it's though the central screen or just auto wipers with wet salt on the roads I'd be a tad concerned about ending up with my teeth in a tree. When it's wet and salty on the roads I want manual control that's easy to use. Once again a cracking video both and thanks for sharing.

I have the new Tesla, the capacitive buttons take a little getting used to, but 200km and no problems. Auto cancel works 95%of the time but so far even on UK roads no problem with signalling coming off roundabouts. Shifting is easy and use the atu select and that works 95% of the time. Latest update has massively improved parking visualisation. Over the last 1801 miles my average is 4.12miles/kW and that so far is driving primarily in the UK for the last 2 weeks. And 600 mile journey dead simple with the Tesla superchargers.
I looked at the BYD and noisier, softer, more expensive for the base model. (I got the RWD version of the Tesla) 262 miles in general per day covers all my needs and the 600 mile journey added 1 hour and that was because I needed to arrive with 70% charge as there was no destination charge until the following day. This was my first Ev and I think it was a good choice, though I do agree that the BYD does look nicer outside. 😊

Test driven a single motor Model 3 Highland and a Seal premium back to back this morning , and I must say I could not agree more with the comments and conclusions after the sessions. The ride quality and the user interaction interface of the Tesla are pathetic and lacks that of the Seal. Unfortunately Tesla Perth disable the lane keep, cruise control of the test car and so was unable to see how well it works though I was all along under the impression that it would be much better than the BYD. But until the Tesla Perth centre wise up and put their best foot forward in the competition, I have completely written off the Tesla. In Australia, it is a no brainer which car to buy. What a great review. None of the BS about 0-60 times and drag races. Just a lot of practical comparisons on things that would affect everyday driving.
I have just had the chance to sit in the Seal and inspect the interior and have a play around with the infotainment and controls. As a current Tesla Model 3 owner I was quite impressed. The seats are firmer but more supportive, and the HVAC system is much better. It is let down slightly by the lower resolution displays compared to the Tesla. How much would it really add to the cost to put a better quality display in the Seal?
Since the new (highland) version of the Model 3 was unveiled, I have been taking note of how often I use both the indicator stalk (including the washer/wiper button on the end) and the direction mode selector (gear stalk) in my current Model 3, without looking. I just know intuitively where the controls are. By the same token, the scroll wheels on the Model 3 steering wheel fall easily under your thumb and don’t require you to look for them like the buttons on the ‘conventional’ steering wheel of the Seal. I struggled with the lack of driver’s display in the Tesla so much, I have fitted an aftermarket HUD.
Seriously considering changing my Model 3 for a Seal next year. While the Supercharger network is good, 95% of my charging is at home.

Nice to have a review on the RWD Seal, as most reviews are on the AWD version, but finally a few are coming through on the RWD version.
Interesting how in the UK the Seal costs more than the Tesla. Here in Australia the Mid spec Seal with the larger battery (as in this review) is ~AUD 4k cheaper than the entry level M3 Highland.
Prices vary as well. The on road (driveaway) cost of the two BYD Seal versions here in AUS that are the same as in the UK (although we have a cheaper entry level Seal down here as well) are Seal Premium 230kw motor with larger battery at ~AUD63k (~33.5 GBP) and the Performance 390kw motor AWD (Excellence) ~AUD73k (~39k GBP) The entry level Seal with a 150kw motor (same as in the Atto 3) and 18 inch wheels is ~53k driveaway.
I totally agree with the comment on lack of one pedal driving. Perhaps it could be added in a software update (or perhaps not that simple?) I drove an MG4, where you could select one pedal mode in the menu. But it was too severe. Needs a slider control for personal preference within certain parameters. Tesla have it pretty much right. As someone who was weighing up the Model 3 Highland and Seal Performance for a long time it came right down to test driving a Model 3 for my decision to be made.
I’ve now owned my Seal Performance for almost 2wks and basically my thoughts echo Ginny and Nicola’s to a tee. In Australia the Seal is priced significantly less than the Euro and UK markets and in a lot of reviews I’ve seen from those markets, the Seal’s high pricing has been its biggest negative but it’s great to finally see an objective review instead of the typical Tesla bias in a lot of reviews.

@@newbris I test drove the Model 3 RWD and LR for 45mins each. There’s absolutely no doubts there’s a huge upgrade over the previous Model 3 and does everything better.
The main talking point is obviously the stalk removal. Gave them a good workout in varying scenarios and while they weren’t really an issue and it took minimal time to get use to them there were times where they were simply an inconvenience and these situations can’t be avoided based simply on hand/wheel positioning.
Ride comfort and cabin noise improvements are certainly noticeable on smooth roads but still got some noise at highway speeds.
The main issue but not really an issue given it’s in beta was the auto-gear selector. Only got to try it a few times but on a couple of occasions it made the wrong selection and if you were none-the-wiser it could be a rather ominous outcome. I have seen previous videos where Tesla Vision has grossly misjudged objects and measurements so hopefully there’s improvements there.
The other things I’m not a big fan of: gear selection on the centre screen, exterior looks, everything on the centre screen and completely minimalist look and feel.
Overall I was impressed with the upgraded Model 3 but ultimately, I still prefer the look of both the interior and exterior of the Seal and for the money, I still can’t go past it. The (Tesla) RWD in my preferred config would be $70K ($64K after the rebate) and the LR would be $80K while the Seal Performance is $72K.

The reason why BYD doesn't offer 1-Pedal driving is because the majority of the drivers simply don't like this feature. It feels unnatural to most people. I am sure after getting used to it, more people might be OK with this feature. BYD did actually incorporate the regenerative braking benefit of "1-Pedal Driving" into the braking system itself. In the BYD Seal, the regen kicks in when you first step on the brake pedal. The actual friction braking will eventually take over if the braking force required exceeds the regen capability. BYD's system works flawlessly. The ultimate goal is to recuperate as much kinetic energy as possible, and the regenerative braking system in the BYD Seal achieves this efficiently. All drivers are used to "coasting" as a natural part of driving. BYD wanted to preserve this feeling, and I am so glad they did that. One of BYD's major goal has always been to make the transition from ICE cars to EVs as seamless as possible. That's why they outsell all their competitors in China by a huge margin (including Tesla).

    • @LouDeVere

I just don't understand why BYD can't offer One Pedal Driving as a software option. You just go into vehicle settings and select the Regen tab and select the level which suits you - the driver - the best. This way, everyone wins. Those who would like greater Regen can have this easily whilst those who are not that keen on the feature, can chose little or no regenerative braking. After driving a Tesla Model Y, I definitely know which I level I would set.

I switched from a 2022 Model S to a 2023 BMW i4 so I could continue to play my music library from a USB stick.

I have never been in the Tesla......but I can tell you that the Dynaudio system in the BYD is rather good............and yes, it has a data port with a native media player.

You can still play music from a USB on a newer Model 3, but it requires some trickery. If you're comfortable with computers, you could replace the sentry USB stick in the glovebox with a larger device, ideally a "real" SSD (which use higher quality flash memory that's far more durable than any USB stick). Connect it to a computer and format it with two partitions, one for sentry and another for music.
Or you can connect a hub in the glovebox USB port, use one port for the sentry USB stick and another for your music. Tesla explicitly advises against this, however.
Finally there are aftermarket USB port modules for the centre console which give you more ports including one which supports data connections.

    • @wilber8260
      @wilber8260 5 месяцев назад

@@sjwright2 I actually tried the USB hub approach in my Model Y but couldnt get it to work. My solution was to insert my music USB where the sentry stick normally is, and just live without sentry mode. The other approaches you mention are above my pay grade. I am not happy with Tesla since the bean counters took over and are saving a few pennies by putting a power only usb in the center console where there used to be a data ready usb in prior years. This is analogous to Tesla saving some money by removing the turn signal and shifter stalks. I am not a fan of those changes either.

I liked the review a lot but I think that you just aren't that aware of how far advanced Tesla is over any electric car at the moment. All the cameras, sentry mode, dashcam, autopilot with all its features, one pedal driving, collision avoidance front and back as it tries to avoid that car that will hit you from behind and the front, it tightens your seatbelts before the crash. High fidility park assist, Tesla's Google maps, navigation system is far superior as it also calculates how many people are going to the charging station during your long trips. Display at the back with their own bluetooth connection. None of this is present in the BYD. Putting it into analogy, it's as if BYD is Android and Tesla is iPhone.

Interesting take, I disagree with the reviewers opinion on the road feel and handling of the 2 cars - the new Tesla is superior to the BYD, not that the BYD is bad it's pretty good as well, I just can't understand how anyone who has driven both cars can possibly say the BYD has superior road manners to the Tesla.
I think they are similarly quiet, the Tesla definitely has more storage room, and the Technology implementation is vastly superior to the BYD despite the BYD having a few more features like 360 view etc. We don't have any longitudinal evidence on durability yet so hard to tell but as cars they are pretty close but the Tech and cabin for me swing it in favour of the Tesla - the BYD interior is more familiar to people coming from ICE cars so some may find it less confronting but I personally like the fact that the Tesla has no buttons and dials outside of the screen and steering wheel.
The lack of stalks on the Tesla was a bad idea this brings the BYD back into play - overall as cars I think they are pretty close - (personal styling preferences aside I think the new Tesla is massively better looking than the BYD which I think already looks really dated)
The thing that swings the equation big time back in Tesal's favour is tech & charging - with the latest update the Tesla will gather all of the data for all other Tesla's following similar routes to your journey and using AI will detrmine the best charger & charging strategy to get you to your destination in the shortest possible time by aggregating all of the information it has on who is likely to reach chargers at what time and for how long they will spend there. BYD are nowhere near this level of sophistication - but in Australia they are also $3k cheaper like for like and they also have a $10k cheaper base model - tough choice but I would go with the Tesla (and even more so if it had stalks)

    Great review. Thank you!
You mention that too much functionality is through the screens on both cars, and I agree.
I haven't driven either of these cars, but I've driven a lot of previous model Model 3s and a lot of BYD Atto 3s.
On those cars, I found that the lack of buttons was far more of a problem in the Tesla than in the BYD, even if you don't allow for the BYD having more non-screen controls. The BYD's voice recognition was excellent, so you could say, "turn off air conditioning, set fan speed to 2, and set temperature to 18 degrees" for example, and it would do it.
The Tesla's voice control was hopeless. The Tesla showroom guy (this is in Australia) told me he could only get it to work if he put on an American accent. I have a northern English accent and it couldn't understand me, whereas I have no problem at all in the BYDs.
I'd still prefer buttons. But the BYD offers a more usable alternative to the screen than the Tesla does.

I had a similar experience testing a MY in Australia. I tried to lower the temp setting as it was getting really warm under that roof, but couldn't find the temp adjustment on the screen. It kept taking me to the climate window where you can adjust everything except temp. I then tried voice commands (I despise voice commands even when they work) to lower the temp setting and the car navigation rerouted me to Islamabad. I had to pull over to reset the nav to take me back to the Tesla dealer.
The kicker in all this is...I am an American! I have a midwestern accent, and it still misunderstood me.

I'm hoping car manufacturers will eventually realise that massive touch screens are not the answer. They've seen Tesla do it, and they sold boat loads of them, so they must be doing it right! Right? No. As a consumer, it's not what we want. Buttons are the answer. Far more intuitive and safer while driving. I own a model 3 and find the touch screen to be great at a standstill. Like playing on an iPad. But while driving it's way too distracting, and easy to miss the button that you were trying to press. Same thing with the door handles. Elon Musk might be a rocket scientist, but most of my friends aren't, and are made to feel like idiots when they can't figure out how to get in my car. I don't want to have to give all my passengers a tutorial on how to get in and out of the car 🤣

"I always use the FSD beta, it works flawlessly for me on my work trips. So if and when I update to buy a new Tesla I don't care if it has the stalks or not. It works most of the time because you need to put the turn signals on while still driving straight,, But there are those occasions when you need to put the signal on when the steering wheel buttons are at 3 o'clock while going left and you are ready to put the signal on to turn right. Then you just push the turn signal button on the left, right? Awkward.

Every round-about becomes an indicator nightmare. And I do think that Nicola is right about the Tesla being more robot than car. It is very good at what it is doing, but with a complete lack of enjoyment to it. Styling-wise, it is nice but not interesting. - And the fart-noises... give me a break. If it was animal-noises like a chimp, cat or a dog, then maybe I would find that somewhat amusing, but fart-noises... I am not 5 years anymore. Apart from Teslas supercharger network, I think the BYD is the more attractive option here; looks better and seems to be more involving to drive - not to mention it got a real indicator stalk. BTW, I do think the general Electrfying audience is informed enough of EVs in general to have heard of BYD before. In the summer driving in France at the faster max speed -130kmh (81mph), I could easily achieve 300 miles if I ran the battery down to close to 10%, the same journey a couple of weeks ago, it would be more like 220 miles range.
Whilst here in the UK on typical variable speed limit motorways - so 50 60 or 70mph in warm Weather would easily see 3.5 or higher miles per kWh.
However Genesis like its parent companies EV's offer upto 350 per kwh charging speeds, although i've never seen that in reality...

Even if the car has a heatpump, you must know that every EV has also a resistance heating element (yes also the EV's with a heatpump). This element is typically used to get the car interior up to temperature in a fast (but energy carnivorous) way. @@keithshayle7027

@@06younger It's not IF it has a heatpump. But also the correct efficient implementation of it. The implementation and efficiency is where the Tesla shines and outperforms everything else in the car space. It's the best HVAC system in the automotive industry.

Great down to earth review and I was interested in the Tesla -mainly due the improvements over the first model - especially with the Tesla charging network until no indicator stalks! - cost cutting gone too far for British roads and roundabouts 😢

6:23 Weird. I saw another review and they said the BYD materials felt very cheap compared to the Tesla. Also the display(s) get partially hidden by the steering wheel.
You can change the gears on the roof of the Tesla. The buttons are hidden between the interior lights. Initially designed for when the display doesn't work.

A lot of drivers just want a car that works. So maybe that’s the reason for Tesla popularity. They just work and like you said if you’re getting an EV there’s no other car brand that will make that transition easier than a Tesla

For using fast charges yes. But charging at home is the same.
But then there's the user interface. It's a big departure from what people are used to. Sometimes for no good reason.
As long as they insist on those few dumb ideas, they won't appeal to average people. Not if they have a choice of a more familiar car.

@@Uchejnr Yes, but they definitely need to use the indicators, the windshield wipers, the gear selector or the steering wheel. Those things are critical in the user interface of a car and you can't change them arbitrarily. Well, apparently you can, legally speaking, but it's disrespectful and even dangerous. Tesla is getting away with it for two main reasons: 1, because it appeals to some techies. 2, because some people still don't have a choice if they have to road trip often or depend on public chargers. But ultimately it will have to decide to either ditch these dumb decisions or stay as a niche brand.

The most expensive part in an EV car is battery. BYD is producing battery itself. Therefore, it is able to provide a competitive price. Elon Musk also mentioned, if not because of the tariff imposed on this Chinese car by many countries. No other car makers can compete with BYD in term of price.

Tesla also produces its own batteries. Tesla has a bettery part in each of their factories producing cars. Not all are operational but they would be in the future. Tesla had their priority on the part that produces cars first but now the focus is on batteries more or less.
