    Which are you buying? Why??
EDIT: You BYD fanboys are hilarious 🤣 We never said it copied the Highland variant, we said it copied the Model 3 - and it very clearly did. The model 3 “bulge” has been there for years, since it first came out.

      Neither.
Both are made in the same country with questionable build quality and reliability issues, not to mention the batteries themselves.
If I had to choose with a gun pointing at my head, I would go with the Tesla only because there is marginally a better quality through oversight over the BYD and nothing more.
If the value proposition of all EVs were marketed significantly cheaper than the petrol variants considering the cost of living crisis and recession at the moment, I would go with a German or Japanese version every single time.

I drove a Seal Performance and a M3 Long Range dual motor and ended up ordering the Tesla. To me, the Tesla was just so much nicer to drive, quieter and smoother around town. Plus, I don't have to take the Tesla back to a dealer and get it serviced for $300-400 every 20K as you have to do with the BYD. I do about 50K a year and that made a big difference.

Test drove both. Picked the Seal. Coming from a European car i prefer the Seal interior. The ride quality and NVH is better in the seal for city driving due to it's softer suspension. Built quality is also better in the BYD. Silver tinted roof made a huge difference when i test drove this summer compared to the Highland. Not to mention parking sensors, stalks, gear shift, buttons, 360 camera, V2L, HUD just to name a few. BYD also does OTA just like the Tesla which you've failed to mention and it fixed most of the ADAS sensitivity issues now. I'm not a racing driver wannabe so it's a better family sedan compared to the highland.

Ok, another shallow post. I’m curious, it appears you chose the less safe car, less efficient, less rigid chassis bearing in mind Tesla is using gigacasting, less connected, less app control, no equiv autopilot, less processing power, no octovalve - reverse cycle air conditioning, less quiet. And shorter warranty by 2 years. BYD on my last check also has poor integration into home automation and charging/ peak/ off peak / solar and battery utilization. Users also don’t have access to seals API.
BYD seal as far as I know doesn’t utilize aluminum panels and carts around a few hundred kilos of extra mass.
Tesla is also renowned for major software updates that have progressively added significant features year on year.
Is the BYD is tied to the dealership model still?
There’s a lot more to the decision making than styling alone. The seal is a nice car. Styling is and always will be subjective, but is the price comparably less to overlook the big ticket items from above? Or is safety and warranty less of a concern? Seems like the decision making is more on looks than tech, performace and safety…
If you bother spending time to understand the deeper aspects of what Tesla have been doing. They are not cost cutting. They are pushing further ahead than any other manufacturer has done in years. Unlike other manufacturers they also have the overheads of building car factories and production processes from the ground up. The fact the cars are as affordable as they are is a testament to their engineering and manufacturing processes. Why is a new company making the 4 safest cars in the world?
They are now paving the way to 48v low voltage architecture and steer by wire tech…. Watch everyone else follow. The same as casting chassis.
They are one of the few manufacturers that are regularly reducing the cost of their cars when everyone else is going up over a long term scale.
I’m blown away how you could make a statement like “getting less for the money”. You sir have not done your research and your decision making and justification is skin deep.

In Germany Tesla Model 3 Is the Car That Failed the Most in Germany's Mandatory Vehicle Inspection. Thats super bad for new car that costs that much. And here in Finland new cars first Mandatory Vehicle Inspection is done when its 4 years old. And many ppl including me wil go much more than 80 000km in 4 years so before first inspection warranty is already gone.. Teslas software might be good, but cars might not be best quality. The BYD Seal was released before the new Model 3 so It's actually the new Tesla Model 3 that takes a lot of inspiration from the BYD Seal. The problem is most people in the West can't imagine that they're not at the center of the automative industry. But China is the most important market for most Western automakers including Tesla and changes are made for Chinese consumers primarily. Tesla clearly changed the Model 3 to keep up with BYD in China.

The T3 was way way too far minimalistic. To actually put 70k down on a car that has so little to excite me was just not an option. I think car reviewers dont truly, truly understand the feel of putting their own hard earned money down on a car enough. Each to their own though. As the owner of a 2022 Model 3 RWD, I have recently tested driven both the Seal and Highland. In short I’m changing to the BYD.
To be honest, in everyday driving I didn’t notice that big a difference between my M3 and the new one. On the same drive, it was 10% more efficient but I really didn’t notice a better ride quality or that it was that much quieter. Maybe that is down to NZ’s coarse chip roads. The ventilation system is still just as poor as in my car, particularly on fresh air rather than recirculating. And now, as well as removing the radar and USS, they have done away with the steering column stalks. That, combined with no driver’s display, makes the (budget driven) “minimalist” interior a step too far.
When compared to the Seal, the Tesla interior looks and feels cheap. After 2 years the creaks and rattles have started to appear in my Tesla. I can’t comment on whether that would be evident in the Seal because they haven’t been around long enough.
The Seal is a better “Grand Tourer” in my opinion and because I drive in a relaxed manner, comfort is more important than sports car handling. The voice assistant is just as good at interpreting my Kiwi accent as the Tesla although it doesn’t include the option to use the juvenile language such as “open butt-hole” to open the charging flap (yes I know it’s manual on the BYD). What it does do though, thanks to wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, is give access to your phone’s voice assistant through the steering wheel button (long press).
Tesla Superchargers are not as ubiquitous in NZ as other countries and they are the same (high) cost, so they are less of a factor in purchasing.

    Thanks for the review!
Don't forget voice commands are available for many functions in a Tesla so you don't necessarily need to use the screen ("open glovebox", "I'm cold/hot" etc). Also iphone integration is very functional - you can stream music (and control using the steering wheel's scroll wheels), dictate text messages to send via your phone and so on. Also, changing settings like seat position etc are a once-only thing - they are saved with your profile and set automatically when the car recognises who you are (your phone is your key normally, not the card). Does the BYD do this? - Tom Gan's reviews seem to say you need to change some the car's settings before each drive?? (not seats obviously..).
Agree that it is a pity they neutered the sound system in the new Standard Range, otherwise (apart from acceleration) there isn't a lot of practical difference - the long range has a bigger battery and longer max range, but it's not recommended to charge more than 80% on a regular basis, while the standard range LFP battery can (and should) be charged to 100% as normal practice and in that case has much the same range as the long range.
Regarding using the card key to unlock the car - not the usual case: normally your phone is your key and the car automatically unlocks when you come into bluetooth range, and locks when you move away.

Thanks Matt. You are correct on the final thoughts "I wouldnt go for the base model , I wouldnt go for the performance "
The premium is the optimal choice here as dynamic looses too much grunt , the performance version falls short of performance.
The EV tends to loose a bit off puff after 110km , this never made sense when Jake was explaining but driving the premium version and I see what he meant. It is faster like I can still keep up with anyone overtaking me at 110km but the 0- 70Km is swift compared to 80-110km.

Clearly, new BYD owners are furious that their car is still being considered as second best. Sorry, too bad too sad. Just get on with your choice and call it a day. Be thankful to Tesla for pushing other car manufacturers to come up with something better, finally, after eight years, BYD made a good car if not better.

Great comparison review - I went for the Model 3 mainly for it's software tech - prefer not having a key fob and having to lock the car manually when walking away (unless BYD has added this feature since I last test drove it??) - having the car 'route plan' charging stops on long trips is another 'must have' for me as well as the Supercharger network - being able to charge at 11kw AC at home is another plus - very happy with my Model 3. That's not to say that the BYD Seal is bad car - far from it, it's just not the EV for me 😊

The Seal is very quiet but a bit softly sprung in the front. It has V2L which would be great to have, charge during the day, power your house at night. The Seal colour range is much nicer.

Nice review, thoroughly enjoyed it. Just an observation from my perspective. To me the interior of a byd wins hands down over the Tesla. Not because it looks more normal but because of the presence of a HUD. I have a model Y, love the car, but i strongly maintain a HUD would have made it much better(and safer). Here in Melbourne, we have speed cameras every few km, and a speed tolerance of just 2kmph. Not having to take my eyes off the road to check my speed (or for navigation info) is just safer. Lastly, my model y squeaks and rattles, if the byd doesn't rattle, that's another win for the interior.
Overall i agree with you that the model 3 wins hands due to its superior driving dynamics

Ok.
They are now paving the way to 48v low voltage architecture and steer by wire tech…. Watch everyone else follow. The same as casting chassis.
They are one of the few manufacturers that are regularly reducing the cost of their cars when everyone else is going up over a long term scale.
“Of course”. Makes me curious. What deeper decisions have been made. Help me understand.
