Haven't tried it while car play is running but two finger swipe left and right adjusts fan speed and two fingers up and down controls temperature. Also 99% of the things you need to do in the car you just tell the BYD assistant, it's very very good. Seal was too low for my dodgy knees so opted for an Atto 3.
Fun fact: for those who laugh at BYD standing for Build Your Dreams, let me tell you a story. When BYD was founded in 1995, it’s headquarter was located at YaDi (雅迪)Road, Shenzhen city, China, so they named their company YaDi. However, the two words were already taken by other companies, so they added a Bi (比)in front, and that's how BYD came about. As a result, Build Your Dreams was just an English motivational slogan they came up with later.
I have a Seal and it’s the best car I’ve ever had (my previous cars included a Mercedes S class a couple of Volvos several Japanese and Australian cars and my wife has a wonderful Citroen C5). There are a number of things you missed on your video. Firstly, at least in Australia, the car has heated/ ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. The seats are also leather on the top two, of the three models we have here. The climate control can be changed via voice control as well as three finger swiping on the screen. There is also a heads up display which does an excellent job. BYD has already sent three updates after consumer feedback since the car was released here in December 23. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a sedan. They also have a number of SUVs that are worth looking at.
@@Richard-wt8uq thanks for your experience. What is with the consumption and the charging speed? Do you have figures/experience you would like to share?
Hey @richard-wt8uq, Thanks for sharing! Ah interesting as there’s only two models here in the UK. That amazing to hear about the updates, yeah I’ve heard the SUV’s are coming soon too and a very interesting hybrid!
they've been making since the mid-1950s (trucks), but it was only in 2008 when they really stepped up production of vehicles for the masses. they weren't any good compared to western cars but in just a decade, they became the number one car producer and their cars weren't bad either, they are actually winning car shows all the time in europe.
We have had a major OTA update recently in Australia. This allows a vertical three-finger swipe to change temperature and a three-finger horizontal swipe to change the fan speed from any screen. Plus, the voice activation is up there with the best. It can change all the necessary elements of the aircon. This update has dramatically reduced the intrusion of the safety systems as well. So much so one does not need to turn any of it off.
To adjust the climate control you can use the shortcut on the steering wheel, voice commands or the recently updated 3 finger swipe on the main screen, more than enough options I think.
@@npoleary Yes, this gesture control for the AC is the first I've seen in any car, and makes physical controls just about redundant. So much for Chinese manufacturers copying legacy auto, it is becoming quite the opposite in the EV segment.
It's not bad enough that China spies on people who are stupid enough to buy one of their phones or tablets, but now morons are actually buying their cars??????? Some people are too stupid to know how stupid they really are...
I watched a video post in a popular youtube channel for BYD: A famous columnist abroad visited BYD last year, at the end of the visit, he asked a question to byd marketing people, "I knew byd have had 20 years of experiences in car manufacturing history, why do you enter international market so late?". The marketing people told him very plitely that she didn't knew the answer, but she would forward the question to byd technical people and they would answer his question. A week late, the columnist received a email sent from BYD's technical chef, told him that during byd's first 10+ years, they were leaening how to build a car so their design and quality were not good enough to compete. Late byd hired world's 1st class designers, and invested lots of new technologies so their manufacturing capabilities promoted a lot. In 2021 BYD thought they could now compete with all the world brands in both EVs or hybrid. The columnist late said that he assumed the same factors when he asked the question to byd, but he was very impressed that byd's tech leader gave him the answer so frankly. That's the great attitude of an excellent company. Go BYD!
Nice! That’s cool! Honesty is the best policy! I wish more manufacturers were that open about their decisions etc They’ll do well if they keep that up! 🤓
For current buyers of new cars resale value is a problem, you are right. But what is important (and there is not enough data yet) is how happy the people that buy those cars used and for cheap end up getting. If they are good and cheap, word of mouth will eventually make more people want to buy them used and that will raise the resale value. Not tomorrow, and that is something people buying one now should take into account. And probably a reason why BYD's new cars have to be cheaper.
@@pauloavelar123 BYD invest much more than Tesla in R&D every year and think of the efficiency of Chinese engineers and cost, the actually development value may be double than Tesla. Also BYD has the best supplier chain in China and most of the key parts are made in house BYD, the results is their price are so competitive. BYD also has high end of vehicle: Yangwang U8 SUV ($150K) and U9 $240K racing cars, BYD Denza are developed with Mercedes and now BYD buyout all the shares and rights from Mercedes. Toyota already adopt BYD's hybrid technology in their new cars. No one will doubt BYD will be the top 3 vehicle manufacturer in the world in 5 years, may be 3 years. That's why our government want to ban BYD with the slogan of "national security". The reason reason is US cars can not compete with China now and in the future.
I bought a BYD Seal earlier this year. My first EV ever. Fantastic experience so far. Top quality and fun to drive. Unlikely, I will ever go back to ICE cars.

The quality we get is excellent and IF we could manufacture closer to home we would happily pay higher prices, as the shipping times and costs would balance things out. However, quite simply, there are zero companies making the goods we need closer to home. PS: the BYD looks great but like you I have one demand from any car and that is physical buttons for AC. No cobalt in the batteries! Thats an epic thing to have, even tesla get their cobalt from the congo, its literally worse than blood diamonds! Thats a great win on its own, the more I hear about BYD the more I like. Great stuff....
Had my BYD Seal premium 5 months now here in Thailand and it is a brilliant car. You mentioned using the V2L for camping but it can do a lot more. I have added an automatic transfer switch to my 18000 BTU house air con which uses the BYD Seal battery as a 220v, 50hz power supply when plugged into the charging/discharge port. It uses 10 to 12 kw hrs from 5pm to 7 am from the BYD which can then be recharged in the morning using solar panels....it works a treat. The V2L is limited to 10 amps so can only run one air con at 8 amps max.

here in Indonesia, its very popular.. it took me 4,5months of waiting to get premium white . the waiting line is insane.. i think it sold around 5000 unit ++ already my only complaint from this car is the seat adjustment, there is no shortcut, the Brand notification sound is too funky (like an ice cream truck), and the display is a bit too busy and confusing.. other than that, its a perfect car for me
There are several brands of Chinese cars in South Africa. They are not reliable at all and I know the news about Chinese EV's and their self emulation tendency coming out of China. If you must buy a Chinese car to safe money take a hybrid instead. The BYD hybrids are good, but avoid their EV's or any EV till solid state batteries become a thing.

Waiting this car for a while in Türkiye. In Türkiye BYD Atto 3 and Seal U on sale, but this model still not in sale (because of additional Chinese custom rates as I know). There will be a BYD manufacturing plant in Türkiye in 2025 and this model will be available with lower custom rates. Similar may also apply to Europe, importing from Turkey bypasses high Chinese custom rates. Good car, also Xiaomi Su7 is on my radar.
Nice video Nick. I shopped this against a Mercedes EQE. No comparison really as the BYD Seal was much cheaper, better built (IMO) has 4WD and much quicker 0-62mph. The established premium manufacturers like Mercedes, BMW, Audi etc need to wake up before it's too late. Their reputation and name count less nowadays especially with younger buyers. A new BYD Seal is coming too in 2025 and this one will have 800v architecture for much quicker charging and an even more premium interior.
Thank you! One of the main reasons why I last year branched out to cover more brands…. just gives people more of a choice. And the more I do it, the more I can make direct comparisons as my knowledge increases between brands of cars. Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it!
I believe that you can control the climate from the buttons on the steering wheel. On the right press the top left button and this will change the appearance on the small screen. Then using the scroll buttons on top right scroll to temperature and then use the wheel to adjust. Or just ask miss BYD, she's very obliging and happy to help!
You can use the steering wheel button but you gotta scroll 2-3 times to get there. Not the worst, but not the most convenient either. You still gotta use the infotainment screen to adjust the vent direction, seat heater and cooler, and rear defogger
BYD make some brilliant cars as do a lot of other Chinese car manufacturers. The tariffs being introduced by the USA and Europe should tell you all you need to know. The car available from BMW, Audi etc can't compete.
Yes you're spot, the punitive tariffs being imposed by the US/EU speaks volumes, a one trick pony that's run out of tricks. The Chinese are resourceful, innovative grafters, and for some reason our governments can't handle that fact, and so bereft of ideas, we default to arbitrary sanctions, but they seem to be having the opposite of the intended effect,m we're not as gormless as the government would like to think, the people can think for themselves and would appreciate the freedom to buy a car from anyone anywhere as long it's the right price, the right product and available for purchase
Made a test drive with a BYD Seal not too long ago and really consider getting one. By the way, at 12:24 instead of going out of Apple Car to the byd menu to change the AC Settings, hold down 3 fingers on the display and you should be able to change the AC Settings as well.
your initial info is incorrect.... BYD been building ICE cars over 2 decades then hybrids over 10 years and now EVs at least in AU, you can change your air con with 3 finger swipe on screen, horizontal for fan speed and vertical for temperature..... also you can use voice command

Much smarter design than any European electric cars and Tesla. 10 out of 10. Going to buy it next month. And be honest China is the smartest country in the whole world.
Actually, in Australia, the indicator stalk is on the right-hand side because, like in England, we drive on the left side of the road. In Europe and America, it is mounted on the left side. Because they sit on the left side of the car. Reason.....Try changing gears and indicating at the same time when the indicator is in the middle of the car. So for England, the right side for indicator stalk is actually the correct side. It's only all the European imports with the easy mod of just moving the steering wheel to the right side without adjusting indicator stalk is what makes you think it is correct.....But it is wrong! Look at any english made car... Still. With automatic cars, we tend to just live with it. 😢
I've restored many old British imported cars(to Australia) like MG, Jaguar, Rover and Triumphs over the years and they all had door side upto about the mid 1980s when they started cost cutting and moved to to the centre because that's the door side for the larger European/USA markets.
@OTPulse Yep. All about money. Japan also drives on the left so they are happy to supply England and Austalia NZ with door side indicator Stalk as that is standard for them too.
@Steve-ei2vh At one time I owned two 1984 3500s Rovers, one had the indicator on the right, the other on the left. It was so annoying swapping between them, that first corner was always the wipers.
BYD is improving at such an amazing rate. I drove the Sea Lion and it felt like a luxury European SUV. Can't imagine what they'll be like in a few years.
My first EV and ordered the AWD Seal. Tesla 3 Highland was an option too but lack of physical anything put me off. Also it was dreadfully boring. Love the BYD marketing too- no costly “packs” ( take note BMW!). It’s RWD or AWD and you pick interior/paint. Simple. Same I4 I specced to Seal had to have £7k worth of packs to match
A mate of mine own a Tesla, and watching him fight to indicate in the correct direction was hilarious and dangerous. Who puts indicators on a steering wheel? Oh Elon does🤣😂🤣
@wezzman1 I was like that for a few days but after that it became second nature. I will say, it is a weird place considering indicators have been in one place for years or…let me correct myself…FOREVER 😂 but it’ll take some a short time to adjust, some maybe a bit longer.

I was in a conference chatting with some Australians in 2009/2010, and the conversation drifted towards cars and electronics, and one of the guys said that "Japanese cars and electronics is getting good", and his mates agreed with him. If you said this in the 80s, I guess you could get away with that statement. Except he forgot to mention that Japanese automobiles and electronics had been dominating the world for almost 4 decades! You can't even say that about Korean cars and electronics, which in 2009/2010 was already leaps and bounds ahead of the Western world. Today they are still scoffing at Chinese EVs -- just read some of the comments here -- not realising that they've got the world's automobile industry shaking in its boots.
@@yslee1401i can trust your word only if you have been using them all, japan, western, china, korea. If not that's just generalizing what you don't know.
Australian's have indicators on the right hand side (mostly) because of the dominance of Japanese vehicles (Mitsubishi, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru) - that's where it came from and local companies (when we had them) followed suit. So dd the Koreans - not sure why. However - all the European cars have always had the indicators on the left (Mercedes, BMW, VW group etc). Japan which is a right hand drive country has always had the indicators on the right. I switch between a Model 3 and Atto 3 quite often and I have to continually adapt. I would prefer consistency.
Missed a few key features.....LFP battery can/should be charged to 100%, unlike most EVs that should only charge to 80%. Hence you get another 20% range. Also, at least in Australia, all BYD cars can use Tesla V3/V4 superchargers. Missing is Testa's routing software that integrates nearby chargers and battery range with navigation. However, I use ABRP as an app on Apple Carplay. Works perfectly and integrates non Tesla chargers as well. As noted elsewhere, latest OTA fixes a lot of little issues, and has easy control of temp/fan speed. Voice commands also work well and the 360 degree camera is amazing, better than Tesla.

@@yslee1401 Bullsh**t. Do some research - safer than lithium-ion batteries. Or read the following. There have been just six EV battery fires in Australia out of more than 180,000 EVs on the road, according to EV FireSafe. In its submission to a federal government enquiry on electric and hybrid vehicle battery fire risk, it noted that none of these were spontaneous, related to charging, or caused explosions. Three incidents where EV batteries caught fire were caused by an external fire (unrelated to the vehicle), one was related to an arson incident, one by a road collision and one by road debris. Fire and Rescue NSW said in a report issued in March 2024 that just three of the 456 lithium-ion battery fires it attended in 2022-2023 involved electric vehicles. One involved an MG from which the battery had been removed and not disposed of correctly, one involved a Tesla Model 3 hitting road debris on a highway and one involved a battery from an Audi RS e-Tron that had been removed in a workshop. The report also listed four hybrid battery fire incidents but did not outline the causes. The three top culprits were instead e-mobility devices like e-bikes and e-scooters (90), battery chargers (46), and energy storage batteries (37).

It's extremely popular in the Brazilian car market, and it's taken over Toyota and Ford in a matter of years. I don't see why it wouldn't do the same in South Africa.

With update 1.2, you can 3 fingers wipe on the screen anywhere, horizontally to adjust fan speed, and vertically to adjust temperature.

climate can be controlled from the steering wheel, and you can also just say things like 'Hi BYD, my bum is cold' to turn on seat heating, or 'Hi BYD, turn the AC up 2 degrees' etc. I never need to touch the screen to change the AC while driving.
Been driving EV's for 7.5 years, the Chinese brands have been knocking it out of the park for value and simplicity. Current 4.5 year old MG was 1st 1000 order and still happy, with no major issues. Just usual car things, air-con needs a regas, tyres a looking a bit shabby, rear parking sensor decided to not work. No EV issues at all.
You need an aircon gas already? My Audi is nearly 6 years old and never had it done. Why do rear parking sensors randomly fail? I’m not convinced Chinese cars will last 10 years like the average age of cars in Europe or NA last.
Hilarious people are still saying Chinese EVs aren't good. Yes, they're crap, which is why the USA has imposed the highest tariffs on vehicle imports in its history...because they won't sell 🤣
What an excellent and informative video. I live in China and do get a little sick of everyone bashing “Made in China” when a lot of products, like this car, are actually world class. We have been happily driving our Honda CRV here for the past eight years but are now actively considering a change. Going around the sale rooms it is very easy to note a huge difference since going to Honda so many years ago. You go there today and there are only three or four tired-looking upgrades of the same cars. The size of the sales area has been decimated as has the sales force which seems depressed and as uninviting as their cars. On the other hand visit BYD or any of the other sale centres and their is a sense of excitement and pride, an eagerness to show their products which is in marked contrast to not just Honda but also Toyota and Ford dealerships. We are pretty much settled on buying a Tank 400 hybrid in the next few weeks. Fantastic car to go with our lifestyle, wonderful sales team who were eager and knowledgeable about an exciting and well-built product at a great price.
Well I went into this thinking…hmmm I wonder if this is any good. And the more I used it the more I was like, this is actually really good! BYD are doing something right if they’re selling that many EV’s and hybrids round the other side of the world!
Yes I bought this as my first EV and love it and yes its the 500hp version. It's not quite as refined as my previous Kia Stinger 3.3 GT but is a beautiful car. One thing to note is the AC controls are usable with a click of a button from the center console and not just from the screen. You can also use the steering wheel buttons to adjust the climate. My only small gripe is with the height of the driving position but this in all electric cars. I like to sit a low as possible but with the batteries under the car you just cant get the feeling of sitting on the road. Even the Kia being a big car I would sit as low as possible, which is very low. worth every penny, is up there with the teslas if not nicer and is something else compared to a 360bhp petrol in terms of acceleration and torque. I'm a convert
I asked my Chinese friends, how they control the AC, since most Chinese cars nowadays don't feature separate control for AC. It is pretty annoying and quite gimmicky to have everything controlled by screen that doesn't always show it. In BYD Seal, the AC blower direction are even screen-controlled. Their reply is simple: "Just talk to the car" I realised how quick and responsive the voice system is, even in cheap low cost oriented Wuling/Baojun ones. Sad to say, we, global consumers are used to clunky slow voice command systems like the ones I experienced in Mazda and Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class featured in back in 2003, but 20 years later, the W213 still couldnt process nor understand simple commands correctly.

This could be big. Who remembers that LG originally only manufactured and supplied components for audio visual products (and not a producer of the retail goods) Look where they have come in a couple of decades. Like you mentioned, most shortcomings can be fixed by OTA upgrades (not the steering wheel buttons unfortunately) I think i get a feeling of déjà vu with this.

I think the fad of having everything on a touchscreen to use while driving is perverse.
@LysanderLH Except all controls can be activated by voice. My BYD allows me to do everything without my hands leaving the steering wheel.
Ah yes I heard this from a few people since I made the video. Everyone knew about the swipe gesture apart from me 😅 I know for next time!
While driving you can control AC through your steering wheel
Fun fact: for those who laugh at BYD standing for Build Your Dreams, let me tell you a story. When BYD was founded in 1995, it’s headquarter was located at YaDi (雅迪)Road, Shenzhen city, China, so they named their company YaDi. However, the two words were already taken by other companies, so they added a Bi (比)in front, and that's how BYD came about. As a result, Build Your Dreams was just an English motivational slogan they came up with later.
no,BYD be your dad 😂😂

Just to clarify, they haven’t “just” started making cars. They’ve only recently expanded to new markets. They’ve been making cars for over 20 years.
they've been making since the mid-1950s (trucks), but it was only in 2008 when they really stepped up production of vehicles for the masses. they weren't any good compared to western cars but in just a decade, they became the number one car producer and their cars weren't bad either, they are actually winning car shows all the time in europe.
Again poor research and knowledge for the presenter.

That’s cool! I wasn’t aware of any 3 finger swipe, not seen a car manufacturer do that at all! Might have to try that next time! Thanks for sharing!
To adjust the climate control you can use the shortcut on the steering wheel, voice commands or the recently updated 3 finger swipe on the main screen, more than enough options I think.

The panoramic sun roof is great! Though it really does need a blind of some sort for those days the driver and passengers don't want it so shiny
The panoramic roof has a good insulation and it even in Thailand it doesn’t get hot inside. But I don’t like sunroofs anyway. In my one week test, I used the standard blinds you can clip in.
I visited a BYD Dealership in Ireland and the Seal comes with a panoramic roof cover as standard. It folds up and can be stored in the boot or the froot

I have an A class Merc and my lease expires next year. Another A class is high up my list but that BYD has given me something to think about.
You can also adjust the temp and fan speed manually from the steering wheel controls, and there are buttons in the center console to switch it off, or to go back to auto fan speed.. In my opinion the Chinese will own the mass EV market, while Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi will remain at the top end luxury market. The brands who will lose will be the cheap European brands, the Korean brands and the Japanese and Indian brands.
Good luck thinking that. The Chinese are coming for every segment because they have the technology from A to Z. The German luxury brands, not so much.

BYD stands for Biyadi, the name of the company. Build Your Dreams is a marketing slogan.
You're obviously one of the very few people out there who know about this.
And the name came from the street the company was started on. I think it was Iyadi street and they put a B on it to differentiate from others on the street (or something like that )
@@DIYMick Yes, just about. The street name was actually Yadi and they added the Bi prefix so the company name would appear near the top of alphabetical company lists at trade shows. Very humble beginnings.
Oh…well this is on their website and it states short for Build Your Dreams:

climate can be controlled from the steering wheel, and you can also just say things like 'Hi BYD, my bum is cold' to turn on seat heating, or 'Hi BYD, turn the AC up 2 degrees' etc. I never need to touch the screen to change the AC while driving.
Very true! Although I didn’t see the climate control behind the steering wheel, that may have been useful. Must have missed that

Voice control for the AC, 2024 already mate, try it next time.
That’s good! Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙏
And thanks for watching!
I just bought a seal , it is an amazing car .
Their reply is simple:
"Just talk to the car"
I realised how quick and responsive the voice system is, even in cheap low cost oriented Wuling/Baojun ones.
Sad to say, we, global consumers are used to clunky slow voice command systems like the ones I experienced in Mazda and Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class featured in back in 2003, but 20 years later, the W213 still couldnt process nor understand simple commands correctly.
What commands did you try in the Mercedes that didn’t work?
I really want to try one of these, seems great value overall!
It was honestly really good! It surprised me! Not sure what the others are like but this one was pretty good!
