  • The BYD brand seems to have appeared from nowhere and is very suddenly taking on brands such as Tesla in the EV market. But the truth is, as a brand, BYD isn't actually that new, and chances are you have owned something with BYD technology inside of it.
The BYD Seal is the 3rd car to launch from the brand in the UK, but in the next year or two, we're likely to see a lot more. So, who is BYD? What to BYD make? Is BYD better than Tesla? In this video, John Marcar will be revealing all.

You know what, I have one and it drives great. It is very nicely finished, super quiet in the cabin, the audio, the interior lights that go along with the music, and the quality of the driving itself is great! Everyone who rides my seal for the first time is really amazed at the quality and driving characteristics. Anyone who still comments negatively about this car has probably never sat and driven in one...

I've got one too... And it's really good! The whole thing with comparing to Tesla Model 3 is kinda moot, the cars cater to completely different types of people. I've had an Tesla M3 and I loved it! This is very different and has it's own positives and negatives. Overall the Seal can stand on it's own and is a great car!

@@CThienV Well the usual suspect, Tesla M3 didn't like the cabin but a god drive, Huinday I5 but felt to plastic in the interior, BMW I40 but too expensive comparely, Skoda Enyaq looks cool, didn't try the 85, but the 80 felt heavy and wasn't very efficient and the screen was hopelessly slow, Xpeng P7 too expensive and did drive as god as the BYD Seal. So been around and ended with the Seal!

Had my Seal for 4 months and it is by far the best car I have owned. It drives superb has outstanding performance is comfortable and very nicely finished inside. I charge it from my solar panels but even if I use grid electricity here in Thailand per mile costs are for a 150 mpg vehicle. One feature never mentioned in your video is the Vehicle to load feature....I wired my house 18000 BTU air con so I can isolate it from the grid when required and run it from 5 pm to 8 am from my BYD using about 10 kwh of power which is recharged in the morning from solar. So far it has saved me a lot of cash and and intend keeping for many years. Also at £33000... far cheaper than the UK it is a bargain.

The trend is China is intelligent driving environment focuses on using artificial intelligence to anticipate what occupants want to do or prevent occupants from potential harms. BYD is in entry level segment based on pricing, styling and performance so the level of automation and intelligence reflect so. Blade battery is LFP which is not as efficient as Tesla but cheaper and it doesn’t catch fire even punctured. BTW, that glass ceiling can change to darker color. There is another contender to Seal is Geely Galaxy series, which about Tesla S size and performance but less than half the price.

Interesting review thank you. I'm nearing the end of my Tesla Model 3 LR lease and looking to buy a replacement outright. I've had the Model 3 for over 3 years and it's been so easy to live with so the natural inclination is to replace with the new Model 3. However, the next car will be with me a long time (into retirement) so I need to get it right. There's a couple of wiggly things about the Model 3 which means I will want to challenge myself by trying a few alternatives. I might seem a bit picky here . . . 1) no Apple Car Play, 2) crap auto wipers, 3) No parking sensors, 4) no stalks, 5) no radar for cruise (need to see how well it manages with cameras), 6) Elon Musk. BUT there are some things I love a) the sound system (I couldn't trade that down for anything), b) the simplicity of the interface, c) efficiency, d) charge rate, e) party trick performance, f) it just works!
So at this £50k-ish price point, what else is there with a decent range, performance and practicality? Really the BYD Seal is one of the few options to consider to I'll have to test one. I know it has Apple Car play [tick], great performance [tick], practicality [tick] but what about everything else? Any other conclusions from you? What's the UI like? Is the sound system much worse than the Model 3? Charge rate is a bit slow I believe? I think my ideal car would be a Model 3 LR but with the issues 1 - 5 sorted. I don't think my ideal car exists at this price point and I'd need to add a lot to the budget to get close!

@@DeterminedFC Battery swap is expensive. Not sure how the math exactly works out but, in steady state, each vehicle might require ~1.5 batteries and someone will have to pay for the extra half a battery. And these batteries will still need (relatively) fast charging infra at the swap stations.
Plus, figuring out the correct positioning of battery inventory at the right stations would be a huge challenge at scale.
I can't locate the source now, but I read somewhere that those doing it in China are losing bucketloads of money on it.

Overall good review. A bit too much about BYD itself but I understand that it is an unknown brand. It is very interesting that some reviewers find it handles well whilst others do not. There is such a big gulf between it's reported abilities. I wonder if it's because some people review based on the badge and spec sheet and others review based on the car itself. I personally want one! But will hold off to see what Lexus does with their next gen IS but i doubt it will be nearly the same league in terms of performance at the price it is in Australia.
