My lease on a Model Y run out last June and I switched to a BYD. There is absolutely no comparison in terms of quality, handling, over all feel and value for my money. I'll be purchasing this BYD at the end of my lease.

My neighbour bought the BYD Seal, he asked me to check it out and I was surprised how beautiful and well built it was. Very sleek and sporty. Don’t forget it’s been designed by head designer of European cars who helped to design Audi, Lamborghini and Alfa Romeo.
In fact, there are a large number of European designers working in China auto companies. China auto companies are willing to offer competitive salaries.

Being the owner of a Model 3 and having rented a Seal if this is on the same build quality with the Seal I would take it over Model Y any day. Prices too sound high but actually cheaper than the equivalent Ys.
Maybe, only maybe in the US would I consider the M3 over the Seal because of the autopilot which is obviously extra. But by any other measue I'd take the Seal. Indeed I have.
@@jefftyt I cant compare Seal and Y since Seal is Model 3 equivalent. Software was on par, drive aids on the same level since we don't have FSD in the UK. It was quiet, far more quiet than my first gen Model 3. Performance was really good with only complain that regen was not great. Seats were better, comfier with more support on turns. Boot was smaller though. Overall and considering the price if Seal was available when I got my 3 I would have gone for the Seal.
The reason why the rotating screen is a thing cause in the Chinese market, a lot of the owners download apps from the browser not from BYD store apps to use. Among those apps, some only work in portrait mode. The screen detects which orientation works so it will automatically adjust to it.
Actually doesn't look to bad, bit generic, but made for it purpose. BYD is doing really great job bringing us practical EV for the masses. Can't wait we get BYD officially here in Slovenia. And BYD Shark pick-up just perfection ❤❤❤❤

On the lack of physical controls I find the voice assistant good enough for basics. "Hi BYD, set the temperature to 23 degrees", "turn on the rear demister" etc.
Test drove a BYD Seal yesterday; rotated the screen using the button on the steering wheel to portrait mode; actually works well for navigation. My desire for 'removing potential things to go wrong' is intrinsic so still not convinced it's a great idea.

The vertical screen will make the navigation looks much better with more roads display in front of you, also more cameras imagine when you turn, reverse or parking, also suits some apps to see better on vertical screen, like QQ music, you can see full lyrics on each sound.
@@janosvaradi1663 I use navigation alone, or alongside Spotify with the split screen mostly. Longer runs I'll put AA on so I get my messages, but run it in the background. AA feels like 'Plan B's in this car compared with my VW.
Weird how you had to share as I watched another video from a reviewer from Ireland and he had exclusive access to the car he was in and managed to get it onto the autobahn and up to 225km/h. Great to have you and another journalist working together and in a fun way thanks to both of you. Touchscreen like many EV's these days, luckily not all. Alot of SUV's well all ride similar to this as they aren't saloon/sedan form factor. It also has acoustic glass in some areas to help keep it quieter. Unfortunate about sharing and organisation of the event but you two did a great job with the video. :)
Guys the 7 is to signify its fully electric. Shark 6 and Sealion 6 (called Seal U for sone reason where you are) came out in Australia and they’re PHEVs 7 signifies fully electric when there’s an ICE alternative
You can change the indicator noise in the screen to normal. You can also change the tightness and sharpness of the steering from the screen. By not stating this I believe you are scaring off some potential buyers.
We are getting ours in Mars, the model Y is horrible over pottholes etc and this one has such a cosy feel inside our Tesla feels like un Ipad, it was a really nice suprice
Sealion is because it’s BYD’s ocean series of cars. The 7 is Chinese manufacturer speak for mid size cars. Xpeng P7, Nio ES7 sort of a similar size to this. Larger cars have larger numbers. BYD Atto 3 is smaller. The number is a somewhat universal moniker for size and position in the pecking order.
Instead of one single command say closing or opening the window, i believe its AI could handle a series of commands within a given time frame (30s?) Next time try: hey BYD close the passenger window, turn on the driver heated seat, temperature set at 24 and fan speed at 3, navigate to the airport... and it'll do as you command.
Nope, portrait mode for the screen is NOT silly. It is giving more "real estate" for Google Maps which typically is North centred in driving mode. Flipping the screen in landscape can give you more convenience for other things.
Exactly that. I flip it to portrait in my Seal when doing "serious navigating", for example, in bigger cities where it's nicer to see coming turn early enough. In all other occasions I have it in vertical position.

Base on design, its up against the Cupra Tavascan, if price isnt an issue, while in China , we could look at the Avatr 07 Suv running on Huawei software.
You don't know who would use the LED screen in portrait because you haven't done enough test and research into it. Work a little harder then you know. If it is in landscape the cameras around the car will only show 2 sections, if it is on portrait then it will show 3 cameras section. If you park in a situation where is it too near to other structure or anything you wouldn't want to touch to be scratch or drain to be fallen into, having the 3 views are very helpful. Other that many reviewers complain that there is no button to control aircond and must use the screen to control it...... you can use 3 fingers to pull up or down to control temp and left - right to control fan speed.
Ford uses portrait screen on their Ranger truck and it is absolutely well executed. If BYD can allow AA & AC to work on portrait mode, it would be great especially if a split screen (up & bottom) is also implemented.
Not sure why people think there is not enough room in this world for Tesla and BYD, every other electric car means doom and gloom for Tesla and it will be bankrupt and go out of business . I would think that legacy automakers should be more worried about BYD. But , you know, you have to put Tesla in the title for those clicks….

@@davec110 yes that has been the case since imports from China began. They are sold with only a tiny profit margin (often a loss) in China because of how competitive the market is. The manufacturers have used the less price competitive UK/EU markets as a way of making back some of that profit. Plus import costs, import taxes, local taxes etc.
@@benrgrogan BYD and Tesla is the only car manufacturers in China that makes a profit on all their cars. BYD is less but still profitable due to high vertical integration.
The best BYD Seal (RWD) is merely £30k o/r in Australia. Oh well...... BYD DID admit that their profit margin in Europe IS 90-105% .....so i guess it's down to 'protection'......... right ?. Thinking of migrating ?.

Last I heard the Chinese car brands were mostly absorbing the EU's tariff for at least the short term. The EU's own study said BYD would need a 100% tariff to even have a profit parity with the EU brands.

@@stevenjones916 Someone I know who used to work quite high up for one of the Chinese brands told me one of the reasons their brand had kept prices high, is because they were trying not to spook the European Governments. It will be interesting to see if prices now drop in the countries that haven't added tariffs. We've started to see it from MG. In Both the UK and Australia they've been adding big discounts whilst in the EU they've kept prices at pre-tariff levels.
Having test drove the Seal, if this is similar quality and drive dynanics (in SUV form) its going to be a really nice car, one that shows many others from legacy brands up, although it's not a cheap car. For all I am getting bored of all these SUVs I actually like the look and design of this one, inside and out.

I used to own a Tesla Model Y but found it lacking in so many areas. Test drove a Sea Lion and wow so impressed, I had to order one. Amazing value.

You may also use the three finger swipe on the screen. Horizontal for temp controls. Vertical for fan speed

My husband rotated the screen and it went black. He was wearing polarised sunglasses and the screen is polarised.

I use portrait mode in my Seal all the time - with split screen and certainly with navigation.
What do you put on the other screen though? You cant put the AC screen there, which would be the most usefull

But you cannot use it when using Carplay or Android Auto. So sorta negates the pro of having it in that position.

In Asia outside China the low spec Sealion 7 is selling 33k pounds. The extra 12k pounds likely the tariffs imposed by the UK gov.
@@aeroline11UK tariffs are only 10% which will be the same (or less) than most Asian markets.
@@benrgrogan Its likely the UK importer wants more of the cake. This car starts at 20k Pounds in China.
@@davec110 yes that has been the case since imports from China began. They are sold with only a tiny profit margin (often a loss) in China because of how competitive the market is. The manufacturers have used the less price competitive UK/EU markets as a way of making back some of that profit.
Plus import costs, import taxes, local taxes etc.
@@benrgrogan BYD and Tesla is the only car manufacturers in China that makes a profit on all their cars. BYD is less but still profitable due to high vertical integration.

The best BYD Seal (RWD) is merely £30k o/r in Australia. Oh well...... BYD DID admit that their profit margin in Europe IS 90-105% .....so i guess it's down to 'protection'......... right ?. Thinking of migrating ?.
Why is the UK price higher than the EU price ? Surely the EU's tax on Chinese BEVs should mean they are charged more.
It's always different countries, different tax rate on cars, In Singapore, a new car cost a bomb thanks to our government tax plan.
@@jansenwilder1335 comparing UK to Singers to make a point on price vs EU (which UK was part of and is also still in Europe, where Singers is half a day away), makes no sense fella.
Last I heard the Chinese car brands were mostly absorbing the EU's tariff for at least the short term.
The EU's own study said BYD would need a 100% tariff to even have a profit parity with the EU brands.
@@benrgrogan If that is the case and it doesn't make a difference to what the consumer pays, I hope the UK Government slaps them with the same taxes as the EU.
@@stevenjones916 Someone I know who used to work quite high up for one of the Chinese brands told me one of the reasons their brand had kept prices high, is because they were trying not to spook the European Governments.
It will be interesting to see if prices now drop in the countries that haven't added tariffs. We've started to see it from MG. In Both the UK and Australia they've been adding big discounts whilst in the EU they've kept prices at pre-tariff levels.
Its a beautiful car
Having test drove the Seal, if this is similar quality and drive dynanics (in SUV form) its going to be a really nice car, one that shows many others from legacy brands up, although it's not a cheap car. For all I am getting bored of all these SUVs I actually like the look and design of this one, inside and out.
Was it driven long enough though?

what's the difference between this and an atto 3? is it a more premium suv?
Size
More premium interior and size, lower road noise. AWD charges faster and so on.
