I mean, compared to crashing a jet car called "Vampire" and being in a coma and having amnesia... crashing an electric car on a corner and just rolling down a hill to wreck one leg IS a "little tumble". Of Hammond's two crashes, the Rimac was the "little" one.
In need for speed 2 special edition (1994) there was a futuristic bonus car that was just like this one, even made the same noise . Also unbelievable grip and acceleration
Richard the reason why they are changing the batteries over in that way is because its quicker to put a fully charged battery than waiting for it the charge up via a cable. Dur!
@@englishwithteachermarius5950 Its a track car, basically changing tires but with batteries, allowing easy access and replacement of them during a race can save you the few crucial seconds/minutes you need to gain the lead or to drive the car for longer. Doesn't even have to be Hammond... remember way back when the Stig crashed to Koenigsegg? No one knew who they were at the time, now they're going head to head against Bugatti lol
Curious to see how this video would be without all the music and sound effects. I reckon it'd be 90% Hammond screaming, 10% road noise, .01% engine hum.
That invoked a rather curious mental image for me... Imagine the roads of near future. Instead of normal cars going about their business at normal pace while producing moderate rumbling and super- / hypercar jockeys blasting past them with motors roaring, now we have glorified golf carts you can have a normal vocal intensity conversation in with little isolation... and "Hammonds" on these silly contraptions only barely not taking off, all the while screaming their lungs out. You just sit there having a chat with another passenger and then from behind you there is an approaching hysterical shouting, followed by a glimpse of a "hypercar" zooming past.
The way the breaks killed the power to a dead stop is insane. Remember Super Pursuit Mode in Knight Rider? Needed all the anti air filters to pop out to stop the car and it still didn't stop without skidding. This is real life though and we've just seen an unbelievable demonstration of emergency breaking, at break neck speed.
There wasnt RUclips back in say the 80s but when testing '0 to 100kph cars in the below 5 seconds range' back in the days, the exact same descriptions like 'insane, neck snapping, crazy power, eye popping etc etc' were used by car journalists back then.
@@recall2880 My point is that motor journalist necks and eyeballs have gotten stronger because they wont feel neck-snapping acceleration when reviewing 5 second cars today while their forebears would be raving about how their eyes were popping out.
Remember the progress: in 2016 when this car was new, 0-60 in 2.7s was apparently "insanity". In 2021, a Model S Plaid, which seats four with luggage reaches 2.2s without Launch/Cheetah on normal street surfaces and will hit below 2.1s with Launch mode enabled. That's what I call progress.
the limiting factor is not tech but our own evolution, our eyes, hands, reflexes, etc just haven't kept up to the advances, thats why cellphones all look the same now, not like we have extra fingers or hands to take advantage of anything more innovative they can do, eventually the cars will be too fast for us to control, so either give the control to the AI or limit the car to a point where we can safely control it. Tech will keep improving, which is amazing, we are a bit slow.

For a sportscar that's used rarely, this is actually a good way to do it. You buy two sets of batteries and change them once then charge them slowly later at home. For a normal day to day use it's unusable.
Given that this is a track only car it's actually a good system. This will let you swap out a pair of batteries and continue around the track while the other set charges. Given that it comes with it's own pit crew, i'd say that's a pretty good approach rather than having to wait between charge ups.
If Tesla can do the battery swap, I will buy a Tesla, unfortunately it takes 1 hour each time to get it charged in super charging station, while gas cars only take 5 minutes to fill up the tank, that is much more convenient than electric.
Before going off on ''the whole battery change scenario is a nightmare'' .. This car meets or exceeds the performance of an F1 racecar. Battery development only moves forward by companies that are willing to push the envelope.
NIO actually have battery changing stations just like petrol stations and its automated. So swapping out batteries takes minutes just like filling up with petrol. Also, you can rent and swap for a longer range battery than the one you bought with your car when you need the distance. How is that a nightmare?
All this thing needs now is the modulating voice box with the voice of William Daniels and finally we'd have an irl (as close as we'll ever get) K.I.T.T. Although it's Turbo Boost didn't launch it into the air... probably a good thing since it was Hammond in there.

Are you talking about fzr2000
Richard you are my favourite. Thanks for the hours and hours of joy and entertainment
Surprised we didn’t Clarkson in one of the fields playing farmer.
I was actually looking for a grey Lambo Tractor trying to keep up… or plow through the course from left to right…
"Harry is that you, kindly get me out of here before it catches fire".
Clarkson: stands there laughing.
This was filmed some time in 2018 and was on the grand tour in 2019. The farm didn't start recording till mid 2019 so timing is out a little haha
Richard the reason why they are changing the batteries over in that way is because its quicker to put a fully charged battery than waiting for it the charge up via a cable. Dur!
And 10000000 more expensive... a big fail
@@englishwithteachermarius5950 Its a track car, basically changing tires but with batteries, allowing easy access and replacement of them during a race can save you the few crucial seconds/minutes you need to gain the lead or to drive the car for longer. At the same time the old batteries are still usable and can be used after the second set has been dried so that you can actually drive your 1.1 million pound car for longer instead of waiting for it to charge up.
If hammond hadn’t have wrecked that Rimac many less people would know the name Rimac. In a way having hammond wreck a car is good for business 😂
Right, I dont think ive seen or heard anything about Rimac that wasnt associated with the Hamster
I believe they sold more cars than they ever intended to as a result of Hammond's crash.
And now they are planning to take over Bugatti from VW 😄
Doesn't even have to be Hammond... remember way back when the Stig crashed to Koenigsegg? No one knew who they were at the time, now they're going head to head against Bugatti lol
No doubt
LOL very entertaining video. Now I want to experience this myself!
Curious to see how this video would be without all the music and sound effects. I reckon it'd be 90% Hammond screaming, 10% road noise, .01% engine hum.
On god
Just right 👌🏼
That invoked a rather curious mental image for me...
Regenerative braking? Magnets are a heck of a thing.
Try 'Brakes'
There wasnt RUclips back in say the 80s but when testing '0 to 100kph cars in the below 5 seconds range' back in the days, the exact same descriptions like 'insane, neck snapping, crazy power, eye popping etc etc' were used by car journalists back then.
And audiophiles have been talking about ever-increasing levels of hi-fi perfection for over 40 years too...
Well yes we still all used words back then too
@@recall2880 My point is that motor journalist necks and eyeballs have gotten stronger because they wont feel neck-snapping acceleration when reviewing 5 second cars today while their forebears would be raving about how their eyes were popping out.

Fantastic!! This is literally like the classic Top review videos I’ve always loved! I thought that was over, but this is fabulous to see!

Hammond's reaction when it launches is like on a launched roller coaster sitting in the station at a dead standstill and suddenly flying out at like 70mph
'The brakes...whoa!!! Now that's put everything back where it should be. My eyes have come forward, my lungs are on the front again!' - lol
“This is just insanity”!
I wanna drive one now!
The song at launch is Elevate, by Snavs. :) That took a while to find.
Embrace Shazam.
I love you man, tried to Shazam it but without success.. went back into the comments to keep looking and there your comment was, right infront of me :] Great song btw 👍🏻
As soon as I saw that title my brain went "OH JESUS! Not again!"
Now I’m sure that somebody drove an octopus once, and crashed it

Amazing Gran Turismo 7 teaser! I'm definitely picking Hammond as my character.
it would make sense to me that electric roadsters will be this generation's hot rods. The modularisation and 4 wheel drive 'skateboard' platforms mean open season on how they can be made to a custom look.

WHAT A BEAST OF A CAR FOR SURE.
You guys should start your own show. This is just oozing with old skool top gear! Awesome work The Grand Tour, And well done Hammond for not rolling it
This is far better than TOP GEAR ever was. Had this been BBC they would have done what they did to the TESLA ROADSTER had a script faking it breaking down and running out of energy.
When these guys finally call it a day, I think many many many people will fall completely out of the loop of new cars coming out
"it's like driving a jet engine"

Since I can’t afford the car I’ll settle into buying nio stock. Now off I go in search of an octopus to drive!
Hammond hyped himself over and depressed himself almost immediately mentioning a drivable jet engine
It's a shame this is so over-edited. It honestly brings suspicion to the integrity of the review.
I was thinking that
I’m not sure how faste he was driving with the blurred exterior…thinking he drive safely with editing aimed to quash the bad vibes from the past. Not necessary for them to go about it that way
It looks like a first year creative who just discovered motion blur for the first time and doesn't know what reality looks like
Exactly, I wanted that launch to be natural
This was the only thing that turned me off Top Gear, I even wrote to them complaining about it, and I was sad to see they took the same editing team with them to The Grand Tour, and it's been getting worse and worse there.
Insane!! But i think all car with electric engines on the wheels have these great results… big smile on your face!!
Wouldn't it make more sense for the team to carry spare batteries and just switch them?
I'm guessing they're not that cheap and they don't have many of them

That whole battery change scenario is a nightmare
Acceleration is phenomenal!! So useful in Central London -- 0 to 20 mph (limit) in 0.89 seconds.
Central London wasn't a racetrack last time I checked...
Richard doesn't have bad memories driving a jet engine, he doesn't remember it... lmao

In case anyone else was wondering, at 197 hp and 203 kg, the 2020 Yamaha R1 motorcycle has 970 hp/tonne.
The street legal Kawasaki Ninja H2 has 228 hp @ 240 kg, 950 hp/tonne, while the H2R (not street legal) has 310 hp @ 216 kg - or 1435 hp/tonne 🥴
Don't get me wrong I am 100% a motorcycle guy put power to weight ratios on motorcycles are pretty useless as adding a rider will usually account for an additional 30 to 40% Weight.
