I'm intrigued by the TEMPO barrel system. Very glad a big manufacturer is trying something innovative. Wonder how often the barrel needs to be cleaned.
The barrel isn't really innovative, I mean it is, but maybe not for the reason you think. 5.7 is tricky because it was designed with a straight wall cartridge to fit into the P90 magazine. Whereas cartridges like 5.56 have just a hint of taper in the case wall to allow for extraction if pressure is still causing expansion in the case. This in turn means that all 5.7 cartridge cases have a Teflon coating from the factory to aid with extraction under chamber pressure. Smith probably wanted a barrel system that they think is a bit more reliable with extraction under pressure instead of the straight blow-back like the original Five Seven pistol.
It seems like an overly engineered "upgrade" that may be sorta kinda innovative I guess, but does literally nothing to improve the shooting experience or overall performance of the pistol. Seems like its a solution looking for a problem. I like their train of thought but the difference in value between this and the PSA rock is probably very negligible.
Rotating locking barrels aren't new. Historical pistols from Steyr and Savage used them. Check out the Beretta 8000 series, Px4, Glock 46 for modern examples.
