- Instructional video on how to replace the secondary air injection pump and its associated relay on a 2005 Mercedes-Benz. In this video, I was doing the repair on my 2005 SLK55 AMG, but this applies to many newer mercedes models. Most of them have the same setup. This repair was to resolve a check engine light giving code P0410 - secondary air injection malfunction. The beginning of the video, I explain background on how I knew this was the necessary repair in this case (P0410 is a general code which may be triggered by various causes). This is a common Mercedes problem. Hopefully this video is useful to you and can help save you money and prevent un-necessary time at the dealer. Enjoy! and Good luck!

Great job! I get the impression that you are not necessarily a very experienced Mechanic by two things, you referred to a Ratchet as a Socket Wrench and you called a Universal Joint a Thingy. Now . . . I mention this because, you were willing to tackle this job yourself, you exuded a wealth of Common Sense, you were wise in placing the valve in the box to make sure you didn't lose any parts. The vast majority of Mercedes Owners do not work on their own cars, they pay someone else to do it. You probably saved at minimum, $200 labor if not easily double that. I applaud both your JOB WELL DONE as well as your VIDEO PRODUCTION skills.
I'm thinking about buying a 1999 S-320 and ran into this when doing some research. It's good to know that it isn't too hard to fix. Thanks Chris

I used to have a 97 C280. (Great car). Does it have the same air pump? I think its similar because i do remember hearing it turn on and off on that car.
I have a 06 mercedes e350 and I took my car to the dealership on Thursday for my sbc system to be replaced because it wasn't working properly, luckily I found out they have a 10 year warranty from mercedes so they replaced it for free. I got the car back yesterday and today I came home and parked it and I shut the car off and I Hurd a fan noise running so I opened the hood and it was the air pump. I disconnect the back battery and it was still running then I tried disconnecting the front battery but the wires wasn't coming off and that pump was running and over heating so I found the plug on the pump and disconnected it. I think the dealer hooked up some new wiring and somthing must have came loose I reconnected it and it ran for a second and finally turned off. I'm gonna check the car later today to see if it still stays on. Thanks for making this video

Hi, i did have to reset the check engine light with a code reader. It did NOT reset itself. It has been about 5 months, still no check engine light, and i can hear the fan kicking on and off as it should! :)

That whining sound when you first start the engine is a dead give away. If you hear it, and then it goes away after a minute or so, you know the pump runs. When you started the engine in the video, before you changed the pump, you could not hear the tell tale whine of the pump. After you changed it and started the engine, you can hear that heavy whine. I have a CLS 55 and a S 55. I hear that whine on my CLS. On my S 55, I do not hear it and I am getting the P0410 error and CEL. That pump makes a very distinct whine. Great video, thanks for taking the time to make and share it.
Does it kind of sound like a jet engine? I have a 1999 e320 w210 with 330k miles. I hear the whine while starting the car for about 30 seconds or so. I still have the p0410 code and i need to pass smog.

I didn't notice it that bad when I first bought the car, but it's gotten a lot louder and more whiny. Dealership told me the valve and pump were going bad. Does that sound about right to you?

I know it was a while ago,but did you have the same code? And did you replace the pump and relay as well? And did it fix the problem? I'm buying an 04 SLK320 with the same check engine code.
My son has a 2000 Mercedes S500 and has a code P0410.
Could this be a relay or fuse problem instead of the pump?
Also, could it possibly be the solenoid?

How long does it take to clear for emissions if you were to do a smog and it was still incomplete for the secondary air pump?
2012 C300 has a CEL and code P0410 whenever weather goes below 32F, took to dealer for fix under 10 year emissions warranty, last year. Same issue this year hope warranty still covers this.
I have a mercedez clk500 2004 my car has had codes p0410 on for awhile and code p0710 I just recently had to take it to the shop because it turned on fine one time and shut right off for no reason, we replaced the cam and crank sensor and now it turns on easily (before replacing those we would have to wait for the car to cool down if not it wouldn't start right away you could hear the starter running but it wouldn't start) we checked the relays they are all fine but even after replacing the sensors it shuts off after awhile , I'm really worried about the car doing this we can't seem to figure out why it's shutting off , my smog pump isn't working could that be the reason why it turns off?

Hi! I have a c200 kompressor cl203 sport coupe and I don't have this pump but I do have the same code error so what can be the issue?
I have a 07 E350 and I took my car to a MB specialist and I have went through 2 air pumps. They said it could be an electrical issue but I really don't know. They charge me 1000 bucks and like I said I had to go back twice because I have burn the pump out within two weeks apart. They also charge me 765 for the air pump alone and I saw it cheaper online. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem myself. Did your check engine come back on after you changed it?

Hi there, I was quoted about $930 for parts for my 2009 C300. Estimate says "Air Inspection Pump ($900) + Relay + Fuse". I find parts online for about $130 but not sure that's what I need. I have 0814, 0810 and 0856 codes. Could you direct me as to what part I should get? Thank you!
Thanks. To bad I had the work done already! It ran 1200 and that was the dealership discounted rate! Not sure whay they wanted 800 for the pump.
P0410 code means any components may be failing like check valves not opening to much carbon inside . Solenoid switch stuck or not receiving the 12 v . Any vacuum hoses broken include it the thick hoses connected to the pump motor . Electric pump motor not turned on ( only turned on between 30 seconds to a minute with cold engine only ) power to motor not feeding the pump with their 12 volts Last thing if your electric motor make a huge winning noise don’t replace it instead remove the cover from the motor and clean it all over then lubricate the bearings If you are a handy person this job must be easy for you . Don’t forget to check the corresponding relay and fuse

99% of the cases, there is no need to replace the pump, but only to clean the electric motor after an easy access to it by removing the 2 fans inside and pulling out the motor from its mounting. Zero $ spent.
J. Badinter I was told that a stuck valve is causing the pump to fail. Loud whining when it cold starts and runs a teeny rough. I may try to clean it and see if that helps.

Thanks for the video, my C55's air pump just shit the bed. I see a lot of oil around your oil fill cap, is yours leaking a bit like mine? Since I bought the car and when I need to top it off with oil, the first few hundred miles the oil comes out from underneath the oil cap.
Funny you say that. This car DOES have a slow oil leak. I never need to add oil though..its very slow...will probably get worse over time though. I think it needs a new valve cover gasket. What happens is...it drips off the side of the engine and hits an exhaust pipe, then burns off. I sometimes see a teeny tiny bit of smoke, and get oil smell in the cabin. Ill be honest...im just sort of ignoring the issue since I barely drive this car and dont want to drop the money. Its been like this since I bought it 4 years ago though and hasnt gotten worse. This is the ONLY issue with the car....although I think the auto headlamp light sensor is messed up too. It doesnt seem to work lately. But hey...car is 12 years old.

It was years ago. I bought it on ebay and it was weird. I had to run this CD on my computer that logged me into some remote VPN session. It got me what i needed, but not sure if it was some sort of pirated instructions or something. 🤷

i ordered it off ebay. I searched "shop manual" for my car model. It was a little weird to be honest...the seller sent me a DVD and you install a VPN connection, and it basically connects to a remote computer and you can use the software and it has every mercedes model on it...with instructions on how to do EVERYTHING!.....it was like $20. It honestly wasn't what I expected, and I somewhat question whether or not what I purchased was legal or not. But I got the instructions I needed at least..lol

I have a 2004 ML 500 It NEVER turns over if I started her cold but if I put her in second position for a few seconds then turn it off THEN start fully it will start right up! I've turned the check engine light off a few times but it always comes right back on. It's been doing this for almost a year. The codes are P0410 & P0305. Several mechanics have looked at it and I've even had the pump & relay changed. Do you have any idea what could be causing this? The car drives fine except sometimes when you take your foot off the gas it feels like you're braking. Thank you in advance.
Wellll...im not exactly an expert mechanic, and this repair is the most complex thing ive done. Code p0305 is a cylinder 5 misfire. My first guess would be a bad spark plug or coil pack on cylinder 5.

How many miles did you have on your 2005 SLK55 AMG when you did this repair?
hello! It had around 46k miles. Its a low mileage car...I barely ever drive it. Its a 2005....bought it with 44k 4 years ago. It now has 50k lol.
Thanks for your reply. The reason why I asked you that question was my girl friend has a 2010 GLK350 and recently the engine light come ON the instrument cluster at about 63,000 miles. She took it to the local MB dealer where they found diagnosed code 814 (shorted secondary pump). As a result they replaced the air pump, relay and fuse link for about $1,000. Everything seems to be OK now.

Lol i wish i could. I am really not a mechanic. This was the only real repair i ever did and i was learning as i went along.
I live in brazil and my pump is making this high pitch bought this exact same car 8 months ago and is the fist time i hear it... mainly because is the first time its cold since i bought the car. (No check engine light was on) I didn’t knew what it was and took it to the dealer and they told me that this pump needed to be replaced by the cost of $2.000... i didn’t really believe them because the car was there for 3 days so they could find out the noise, and the first two days any noise happen because wasn’t cold, in the third day the noise happened. I bring the car home and look it up about it and im convinced that i don’t need to replace the part, the high pitch noise i hear is the pump actually working. After all this here’s my question: pump kicks in will normally have a high pitch noise? It only kicks in on cold weather? Thanks for the video!
It will run every time you start the car, even when the weather is warm. It runs for about 1 minute and then stops. And mine was always a high pitch noise, yes. You should be able to hear it.
Chris Papa thanks for the reply man! So now its a bit weird because the pitch noise doesn’t happen every time... maybe is the relay then... but no engine light on the dash board, im not too worried about it, but ill keep on eye on it! Thanks for your time my friend!

Hi, it was still on and I had to manually reset it with my code reader. After that, it never came back on since the repair was successful. It has been off for years.

I have a SL 550 and just paid the dealer $5000 for this repair. They told me if I didn't fix eventually the power steering and the car would drop almost to the ground. Feeling ripped off 😡
DaBratt sounds like the tandem pump for abc, not emissions. Still, dealers are called stealers for a reason ; -(
