- How to rebuild expensive auxiliary air pump also known as the smoke pump or secondary air pump (SAP) that commonly fails on most of the European cars and how to check and fix its relay.
Fault codes for Mercedes Benz are P0410 P0814 for BMW P0492 P1411 for Land Rover P1412.
Regardless of brand or model, rebuilding procedure is always more or less the same.
Used the above guide this weekend to repair my Secondary Air Pump on my 2007 Merc CLK280. Excellent video , followed it to the letter and now my pump is erviceabla again and my P0410 code has gone.Many thanks for putting this video out there
Its a brushed motor that runs for a couple minutes at a time, in a sealed plastic container with no ventilation, inches from the engine. Brilliant design job for MB. Thanks for the walkthrough, OP. Just did this on an R350 and worked great. I think the key to quieting it down is to get all the the carbon dust buildup out of the inside motor, in addition to the more well known step of cleaning and regreasing the bearings.

Great video, but I would recommend replacing the relay instead of sanding the contacts as this is usually only a temporary fix.
This is exactly what I needed (same model) this is the 4th pump replaced in this car so after rebuilding I’m going to replace check valves!

Hi. thanks for good video. I came to know that Audi pump is sealed. There is no rivet or bolt to open it. And what lubrication do you use for bearing? Is it chain lube?

$85 I think it cost me on line, including shipping. Shop around and fix it yourself.
In my experience this kind of repair has limited results but it might get you by until the next paycheck.
As stated in video, repair have a few levels of repair, if pump if completely seized, then take it to the shop to have it rebuild. Then you have practically new unit for a fraction of costs.
What are the symptoms when you have a bad auxiliary air pump?
whining noise or it doesnt work at all at cold start associated with fault code
MechAdventures would i get a check engine light? Do the diesels have this issue? When its cold my 08 ML 320 CDI goes into limp mode and sometimes I get a CEL and sometimes I dont. Maybe I have this problem.

P0410 code. engine light...electronics. Car runs good otherwise. They say this thing only runs for a few seconds when you start the car.
Is prying the only way to get motor out? Also, are you just lubing the bearings? Are they sealed? How do you get grease on inside of bearing? Thks..jc
bearing are sealed, its easy to remove seal on one side and put new grease

it sput only sometimes and was noisy
I got what ended up being basically a new Bosch pump that the owner had installed before totaling the car $35 BUCKS! via eBay.....

Take out the dead squirrel and put a new baby squirrel in yourset for a while that’s how I fix mine
