just changed mine and what an awesome video to show the bolts needed to remove. 1/2 hour is all it took to put in a new one and then repair the old one for next time it fails. Thanks again. My labor plus 130 bucks for the part saved me a bundle!

This gave me the assurance of the noise I was hearing. Only thing is I bought a Doorman that was almost 10x cheaper than the dealer. I feel better knowing that a new part will have a warranty on it. Only problem I have is that I thought it would be much quieter but it sounds like yours at the end. Thanks
Thanks for this video, my secondary air pump is making a similar noise, the pump looks like a glorified two stage shop vac blower. The black dust you blew off was obviously wear material from the brushes so I'm not sure if it was addition of grease to the bearings or the removal of the excess dust that actually got rid of the sound. I will be removing and disassembling my pump and will also try to see if I can't replace the brushes as part of the cleanup and lube process. Thanks again for the video it's a good guide even for my 05 SLK 55 AMG.
It's on my list of many projects but I will try to remember to also post the part number on the brushes if I am able to find them and send you some pictures or video of the replacement process, I'm speaking from pure ignorance at this point because I have not yet seen the motor first hand to see if it can be done.
Can you imagine a goddamn repair shop in my town asked me for $2800 to repair this? My car has the engine light on but it does not have any horrible noise. Thanks to your video and I decided to disregard it until it sounds like a jet engine. :)
Thanks for the great video. I had the same issue on my 2008 C300. Mercedes wanted $ 1,200.00 to fix the issue. I found the part online for $ 143.96 at Pelican Parts and on eBay for $ 167.95. Mercedes Benz part # MB000-140-51-85 is listed for $ 875.00 from the dealer. Wow! The dealer does not provide you with a jar of Vasoline if you purchase from them.
Suggest using a fuse in the hot lead from the battery... " trying not to touch anything" is a good way to take out front SAM, or at least the mega fuses by the battery.
2007 C230 Sport/ I've had the car for 15 years now/ I usually hear this pump for the first 10-20 seconds during a cold start / yesterday morning the sound stuck around for what seemed a minute or two. After I drove off and was sitting at a traffic light the car felt like it wanted to flame out. Not sure if the two are related. I checked the hoses to make sure none were lose or disconnected and the car has not repeated the same minute long whine/ idles at about 300 RPM with no noticeable sign that the engine wants to flame out. I suspect the long whine may be this one component/ close flame out may be something entirely separate (new coil packs and plugs went in last year). Hoping to keep the car running another 3-5 years if possible so I hope its not anything major. Thanks for the content.
Sounds like 2 problems - get codes - also disconnect power to blower if you suspect its the source of the noise Bob - let me know what you find - Cheers from Canada!
Thank you for this video. My SLK350(M272) has same problem and I ordered a new pump and relay. Tomorrow I will replace them and keep old pump after cleaning and checking. from Japan.
Amazing video containing very intricate and informative detail. The combination of a great presentation and a knowledgeable instructor; I much appreciate. Thank you.
I had the same problem with my certified pre-owned 2010 E350. It was under the Mercedes CPO warranty, so the repair was covered. The issue that I ran into was that the secondary air pump failed every single year, so I had to replace them yearly for 3 years. The last time it failed, the warranty had just expired, but because it was replaced just under a year ago, it was still covered under the factory part warranty. This time the dealer looked into why the part failed every single year and they found that the secondary air shut off valves were leaking exhaust when closed. They ended up replacing both left and right bank secondary air injection shut off valves and that solved the problem with the air pump prematurely failing. Because my CPO warranty had already expired, the dealer got Mercedes to agree to cover the parts, but I had to pay for the labor.
Sorry to hear all the trouble John - their story about the cause sounds suspicious to me - but you"ll know for sure within a year or so - if they found the cause they should issue a TSB on it.
@@carquestions That was what was listed on the repair order on what they replaced. I believe that was what fixed the problem, since it has been three years since that repair and the secondary air pump has not failed since. What ticks me off is they never bothered to look for what was causing the secondary air pump to fail prematurely when I had to replace it annually, not until my CPO warranty had expired.
Hello CQ! very fishy... I’ll bet that they’re hoping he sells/trade up the car by then🤦🏽♀️ SMH 🙇🏾♀️ This is why we’re all searching for answers here, because they’re constantly Overcharging for working on Mercedes Bz due to failure of inferiority of original parts from factory on MB that have under 150k mi ☹️ Ridiculous!! I had a 04 es330 /348k, I never had any issues!! I gave to my G’daughter 🤦🏽♀️ Now I have this MBz sitting w no power to the fuse or air pump, it’s unresponsive, No Codes!! Geez🙇🏾♀️ I’m going back to LEXUS and I’ll enjoy the ride with a piece of mind😴
Very encouraging video. I went homedepot to get T30 and some tools. In 30 min I took out the old one. Now need to find a replacement part on amazon which is painful to decide which to buy
Good job on your diagnosis of that Bosh air pump and taking the time to identify the underlying cause of the noise it was making. Unfortunately, many in today's society won't take the time to do this kind of troubleshoothing and choose to take the easy way out by ordering a new part. The only disagreement I would have with you is replacing it (if need be) with a knockoff or less expensive part. If a customer can't afford paying for OE then they probably shouldn't own a Mercedes.
Lots of MB parts made in Romania etc - you are assuming OEM parts are the best built, longest lasting etc? My rule is if it lets you down try someone else's product
Great video and is worth a try, however, I saw brand new aftermarket pumps on Ebay for $84 including shipping. Considering the time spent to do this, it may be more worthwhile to replace with new for well under $100 US.
When a part costs $700 and you can find it on eBay for under $100 I'd be a bit suspicious of quality however the pump is little more than a DC version of a two stage shop vac blower and you can buy an entire shop vac for under $100 so who knows. My policy on eBay is always "buyer beware" but there are good products on there at greatly reduced prices from OEM. The disassembly process didn't look that time consuming or complicated and even at $100 the two hours it probably took to disassemble and reassemble it would equate to $50 per hour, I used to make that kind of money and even then I favored DIY wherever possible and put the money in the bank, I guess that's why I retired at 53 with all my toys and it's play time. The only step I'm going to try to add to this process is attempting to locate and replace the brushes because the black dust he blew out of the unit was brush material so I'm not sure how long his customer's pump will remain quiet if the brushes are worn below spec., in any event awesome video.
It will be making the same noise in a week. The bearings are shot and the carbon brushes probably need to be replaced. You went that far into the motor you should have tried to take the shaft out to get to the bearings. This was a band aid fix. Good tear down though.

Even if you replace the part new, it will still make the same noise 5-6 months later. It's just a flawed bad quality part from Bosch that wont be fixed since dealers make a killing off it ($1127)
@@Mikgwerd pretty much all V6 and V8 Mercedes engines have this pump. and most of them don't break down every 5-6 month. so you should look into why your pump breaks down after 5-6 month.
Hello, excellent video and explanation. Question I have is what type of grease did you use to inject to it and how is the car today since you did that to it?
hey great video but my car is a 1995 c280 benz and it does the same exact noise when started in the morning , would this be the case ? and where would it be located? thank you
If the noise only comes on for a minute and only when engine is cold then yes it most likely is the problem DJ - look for a similar looking electric motor under the hood
Hello Mark, I have a 2009 C300 with almost 70k miles. My pump sounds the same like the one in your video, also the engine light is on with code P0410. Is the noise pump the problem of this code? I would like to make sure before getting a new pump to replace. Because I saw other post with this code is not cause by the pump. Thanks for your great video.
Mark, I replaced with a new pump. It runs quite now. And I cleared the code. But after couple cold morning start, the Engine light come back on with the same code P0410. What you think I should check next?
i have the same issue.. is it an urgent matter to fix ? does it have a lot of negative consequences on the engine or the exhaust if not fixed quick ? thank you very much for the video btw and thank you if u ever replay to my questions
You can drive as long as you like - shouldn't affect the running of the car at all - lots of messages maybe but just disregard until you can fix it - wouldn't let it ruin a trip
Hey @carquestions, thanks a ton for the video. After watching it I tested my Aux Air pump and it makes the same noise. Am I able to drive the car with this part removed until it is repaired? Thanks
Mine was this bad I have a c280 with 84,000 miles on the clock. I bought new one on ebay for £50 took 30 minutes install and sounds so quiet now, instead of waking neighbors with my old jet engine one. Mercedes dealer quoted me £674.99 + Vat for part alone with labor I bet it be £1000 so for £50 I'm happy 😂
Hello, mine does not sound that loud or annoying. But in the morning it is much louder and becomes faint during regular use in the day. Will have to check this.
You look like your super honest! I wish i was in canada! Do you think that after getting the transmission selenoid codes i need to change the whole valve body? They’re trying to charge me 1,150$ for that on a 2010 e350. Sometimes i turn on the car and it operates food the whole day! Other times it goes on limp mode! Is my transmission bad? Should i just junk it? I like the car but im afraid its not worth the money if the transmission is bad
Sadly I'd say change the whole valve body - this vehicle is well known for that issue and that is typically the fix - and always cheaper to fix than replace something. - Cheers from Canada!
@@carquestions thank you! For your answer! So sad to hear you say that i need a new Valve Body i just dont understand if the codes dont pop up when first starting the vehicles why does the transmission operate so smooth? I have a feeing its something with the electricity but you might be right and im just being overly-optimistic cheers from The Bronx, NY
For that price, i believe you will only get the electric kit, which is the upper part of the bodyvalve. But it is the electric kit that usually faulty.
I Also agree as from below, E, yes the black dust is from the electric Carbon brushes and there's a great possibility they are Worn out, just touching metal to metal. You should be able to get brushes, if not buy electric chain saw ones and modify then to size/fit. And well done on fixing the pump. 👍
I had the same problem with my 2012 C250. But two months ago when the engine light came on, it didn't sound loud like that. Now it does sound like it a bit. And two days in a row, when I started the car cold, it struggled and I couldn't accelerate fast at all and the engine light blinked a few times and then came on. So I let the car idle a for a few minutes to listen for anything. Nothing more. So i turned off the car and 5mins later when I started the car, the engline light was off and it was running like normal again. I got the p0410 code. This has happened 2 days in a row. On the third day, the engine light just came on, but the car didn't struggle. Any idea what it could be?
I have the exact MB that he's working on in this video. In the past 3 months, my auto repair has replaced the secondary air pump 3xs. I have had it home for a week and it sounds like it is on the verge of failing again. I can tell by the smell, how it drives, and also the sound. They have checked the electrical, etc. Any thoughts or insight?
Sounds like you have parts replacers instead of a real mechanic - you are not paying them to guess or "try" and fix it otherwise you should "try" to pay them if you get what I mean - Sounds like you need a new mechanic Amy - good luck and Cheers from Canada!
Sounds like your guys arnt really replacing the pump with a new one. Clean and shine up the old unit and back in it goes! Theres not much to wonder about the seconday air injection pump. Just a electric motor that runs off 12 volts. Super easy to test with just 2 wires to a battery. If it fires up then your pump is good with no reason to burn up. Unless: but it does run off a relay in the fuse box. When you start your car the air pump should stay on for only about 20-30 seconds then shut off. The relays are known to go bad now and then and thats where the air pump stays on and wont shut off and the air pumps burn out and fry. Thats possibly what your smelling. Id bet your guys didnt replace the relay which is only about $15 bux. Relay is 10 second job like a fuse....just pop the old out and plug in the new one. Hard time believing your guys have put in 3 pumps that run on a 12 volt system and they all burn out. 🙄 😒 😬
Dear chief, huge thanks for your help i have one more question, i have 230 c-class gcc spec and as i found from the check engine the fault code was 0140 and theres no jet sound while running the engine in morning but the main issue while the car running on any hight way to rpm needle is not stable moving up and down and i feel the car is not normal , do you think the problem is from the same secondary air ? Please i need your help and support
Your problem doesn't sound like it is related to the air pump - so check the car for other computer codes asap - BTW could you do me a favour and check out my arthritis video and let me know what you think please - in need some feedback - cheers Fahad! - let me know how you make out. Reply ·
Thanks for response chief, today i went to one if the mechanic and he told me that my car have air leak from the throttle manifold and the air are not passing to the exhaust system, can you advise?
I own a 2005 Crossfire and a check engine light popped up and it’s the smog pump but every time I look it up it brings me to Mercedes videos is it the same part for both?
I got my secondary air injection pump and relay replaced and P0410 and the check engine light is on. Do you think it could be the new part I bought it on amazon. We checked it and it worked. So what is going on? Thanks for the help.
@@WaveProject my check engine light is still on too and i need it to clear so i can pass smog they said it could be not enough volts and could be due to some technical wire issue not sure if its ground or not but im going to get it fixed for $50 I'll update this once i get it done and find out what it is👍
Excellent video technique. Our 2011 C250 was making a noise for a few seconds upon cold start which sounded like a bearing in a pulley (kind of like a squeal - instead of a jet). After a week the noise stopped but got check engine light and P0410 "secondary air injection system". Engine runs fine. Would you hazard to guess it is this air pump ? (Go Canada go)
I've changed my secondary air pump 7 months ago and I've fixed few other things but I can't get my secondary air to get READY for the smog emissions test. Everything else exept EVAP & Secondary air wont get ready. Ita been 450 miles since... WTH
@@carquestions no codes at all ... I had to jump my BMW 3 weeks ago because it was 18 outside and I didn't use it for 9 days or so. So now after driving 400 miles plus I can't get the secondary to get ready so I can pass the emissions test
I am getting p0810 and p0814, same thing secondary pump not ready. I replaced the fuse, relay and pump is working. But this code shows up with not ready :(
Mine makes that noise. I was thinking of taking it apart to see if I could make it quiet. But what I noticed the other day was that mine sucks air in the hose that goes to the intake manifold. On my wife's car, it blows air into the intake manifold.
A check engine light brought me here. I checked with a code reader and got P0410 secondary air injection system. Followed by another code 0814-00 Malfunction of secondary air injection at left bank of cylinders (function chain) (P0410). I visually inspected all connections and hoses and those seem to be OK. Mine does not make the noise the one in the video did. Any suggestions?
Change the pump - here's why - I changed one out a noisy one and a week later the code came back but the second SAP wasn't making noises like the original one - put in the third one and it has been fine ever since
Awesome video I'm having the same problem with my 2010 C300 but it only ones for a Split Second but I have a feeling it will get worse and also the secondary air pump in America is only $130 that's a weird at cost so much there

@@carquestions thanks. Great vid btw. I’ve noticed my air pump stays running at all times is this another symptom of failure? Hey Mark - I'm getting P0410 code on my 2008 C300. The thing is, it doesn't sound like a circular saw or anything in the morning. I can hear the Secondary Air Pump (I think) running when I turn it on from a cold start. Any idea on what else it could be?
Hey Mr Mark I’m having a hard time finding a 1/4 torx t30 bit. Do you think a 3/8 bit would work just as well? I really appreciate this video you posted helps a lot thank you!!!
A bought a cheap one for $81 and didn't care about the longer noise than usual. I kept the original Bosch part. I'll try fixing that one. The cheap one is broken now after a couple of months. I'll try to fix it too. Is it true this part is only good for passing smog check?
HelpI have a slight problem I have got the Mercedes straight six and the turbo is in the process of breaking, on the engine I have it has a pipe from a circular object with a black lid of sorts which seems to be coming off at the end by the cam, it breathes air, sorry my question is should the air have a residue of oil within it, has that led to the demises of my turbo or does it prolong the life of a turbo through lubrication.
Thanks very much for your reply, last night I ordered a replacement turbo which should l arrive tomorrow, today I shall take off the failing turbo and see if I can find out what the device is that I have no name for that breaths spent air from the engine and see if that needs to be overhauled.
Had the same issue on my 2006 B200 non turbo. Same loud sqeeling noise which dies down after about 30 secs. Until one day I started the car in the morning and the noise started and I heard a grinding noise when the fan motor just siezed up and the engine light came on with error code P0491. Got it replaced with a used working pump from a salvage yard. Reset the ECU but after a couple of months the warning light in the dash came back on but this time no sqeeling noise. So I replaced the Secondary pump relay to eliminate the issue pertaining to electrics. Reset the ECU and drove for a couple of weeks and bang the light came back on again when starting from you cold. Run out of ideas!
if you can do this overhaul yourself..koodos, but a mechanic's labour would be too expensive. would be cheaper to buy a new one online and replace it . Mine failed 9 years after new car purchase, bought a Bosch online $287cad had my mechanic install it. Three years later it has now failed again, purchased same Bosch online awaiting arrival.(dealership quoted me $1700.00 installed)
It may be detecting too much current consumption from the secondary pump. Even though it may sound good, maybe the current consumption is too high due to friction. Try to repair it with some grease like in the video. That may do the trick.
Yo bro please tell me if it’s my problem 2003 Cadillac deville check engine light on but runs like a charm code P0412 Is it possible my pump could be on but not blowing significantly? So I would still need one ?
Yesterday I replaced the Engine Air Filter and before that the cold start of the engine used to sound like a jet engine turning on. Now its silent . And now I have P0410 code on the dash. I remember I had the exact same part replaced 3-4 yrs ago for $700 like you said. Wonder if its just the dust that caused it not to work. I will try the cleaning as you did and hopefully it works.

Mine has been removed by previous owner, missing, never noticed any problems... Think it has something to do with oil fumes, from within the engine? Emmisions, other engines dont have a "vacuum cleaner" like this, don't think it's necessary really. Turned out it is not necessary. www.mercedes.gen.in/p0410-secondary-air-fix-mercedes-s-class-w220/
hey man i have a question again for you , okay so ichanged the smog pump and also the relay . now im getting a code for the check valves , can i just remove them and clean it up?
@@uzzle21 You need to verify that the vacuum lines attached to your Intake Manifold- secondary air injection switchover valve- and Kombi Valves is in good condition. Once that's done you need to remove your Kombi valves and verify that your smog pump is pushing air through your Kombi valves. If all the above checks out ok- your problem should be solved. My problem was dry rotted vacuum lines. Once I replaced those- I was good to go. No more CEL. I used a Power Probe to power up the smog pump for testing purposes. Also I used a Hand Brake bleeder to pull a vacuum on the vacuum line attached to the Kombi Valve. I tested (1) Kombi Valve at a time.
Mine does the whistling/screeching sound under the hood on the 2012 ML350 4Matic. It exists for a few minutes and disappears. It doesn’t come in warm season but always in cold weather starts here in Minnesota. I replaced the serpentine belt but it was of no use. Recently, I got the P2279 vacuum leak error code/check engine light. I replaced the breather/crank case valve along with the 6 intake manifold gaskets with a local mechanic. The error code disappeared but I still get the whistling sound. I started later in the day yesterday and the whistling sound did not come. I researched a bit and found out M276 engine doesn’t come with secondary air pump. I have just given up since this is coming from the last 3 to 4 years but has never troubled me. It’s just irritating when I do cold starts. What do you think might be the issue please???

Awesome I'm doing mine the weekend.....will give feedback when sorted...
Good luck Wayne - remember it only comes on once in the morning when cold - after first start, it won't work again until it is completely cooled down
Yes I know that I've been monitoring it in the mornings, some times its louder than other days..
I've done mine last week and it run likes a dream, thank you for your video.
Really helpful. The best made video that can be found on this disassembly. thanks
Thanks Brian! Cheers!
Great video and is worth a try, however, I saw brand new aftermarket pumps on Ebay for $84 including shipping. Considering the time spent to do this, it may be more worthwhile to replace with new for well under $100 US.
Give the cheap one a try - the original one was no good why try them again?
The only step I'm going to try to add to this process is attempting to locate and replace the brushes because the black dust he blew out of the unit was brush material so I'm not sure how long his customer's pump will remain quiet if the brushes are worn below spec., in any event awesome video.
should i change the relay first before i change the smog pump? just to see . i got a engine light for both
Yes - very good idea
Do you know the location of the relay I’ve been searching for a while can’t find g
It will be making the same noise in a week. The bearings are shot and the carbon brushes probably need to be replaced. You went that far into the motor you should have tried to take the shaft out to get to the bearings. This was a band aid fix. Good tear down though.
This dummy should have replaced the bearing(s) then it would last. This guy's middle name is BandAid... LOL

If the noise only comes on for a minute and only when engine is cold then yes it most likely is the problem DJ - look for a similar looking electric motor under the hood

what is the function of the secondary Air pump?
It is strictly an emission device designed to blow / purge air in exhaust to help warm cats quicker -
I had the same problem with my 2012 C250.
It's the secondary air pump causing the problem - to test your theory just disconnect it and see what it does
I have the exact MB that he's working on in this video.

It is a sign the turbo has failed - internal oil seals fail on turbos putting oil in places where only air should be
It isn't prolonging the life of the turbo - check your oil level and make sure you keep it full - the problem only gets worse
Thanks very much for your reply, last night I ordered a replacement turbo which should l arrive tomorrow, today I shall take off the failing turbo and see if I can find out what the device is that I have no name for that breaths spent air from the engine and see if that needs to be overhauled.

So I replaced the Secondary pump relay to eliminate the issue pertaining to electrics. Reset the ECU and drove for a couple of weeks and bang the light came back on again when starting from you cold. Run out of ideas!
Some of the motors are very prone to setting off the light before being noisy I'm afraid
if you can do this overhaul yourself..koodos, but a mechanic's labour would be too expensive. would be cheaper to buy a new one online and replace it .

David Hall i just found out bro its the damn pump bro its causing the air pump check valves not to function properly
Take off the cover - and physically see if you have the air pump as seen in the video - sounds like the problem exactly - cheers!
