Regarding the Polo: "a slight refresh of the front and the back". I bet no one could tell the difference :D When it comes to looks I would rate it the most bland looking of them all.
Bought a Polo facelift this summer with a 1.2 BlueMotion and it runs and looks perfect. The interior is top notch and the ride is fantastic both in and out of the city. Though not as aggressive in drive style and design as the Ford Fiesta, it's still a head-turner. And, on the upside, WVs tend to depreciate much slower than Fords and French cars so when you sell it in 5 years or so, you can still get back a good part of your initial investment.
They are so expensive though i would buy a little Corsa instead , i know they are not as reliable but here in 2022 i can buy a 2013 Corsa for £2 grand , a 2013 VW Polo would cost at least a grand more and wont be as fast
I think that the fact that the Kia Rio is at the top three of it's class for the second year in a row is no surprise. Style, efficiency, space, price, generous equipment, relatively good handling , long warranty and of course great reliability are some things that this car does have. Sure there are better cars out there but a few come with all the above. And it's a huge step forward for a company that practically had no presence in this particular category!
Whats wrong with a car that works? Not fun? its a hell of a lot more fun than standing at the side of the road in the middle of the winter (or at any other time of the year for that matter) with a car that just broke down. There is a joy in knowing that the car will never break down that (at least for me) more than makes up for it being boring to drive.
Well, I've driven both the Peugeot 208 and 308, both of which have that dial setup. For me, the setup worked fine and no matter how I set the steering wheel, the dials were never obscured. For reference I'm around 6ft.
"The Rio feels cheap on the inside, it's slow and a bit boring to drive." Yet you still gave it 3rd place above the Mini? Despite the Mini's drawbacks it's a hell of a lot nicer to drive than the Rio which I reckon is quite important in a 'which is the best' type test. I don't own a Mini or a Rio but I've driven both and the Rio was utter pants!
petter4544 you're wrong. This was their opinion based on many factors. The 'most reliable car' video was based solely on the JD Power survey but not this one. Maybe YOU should listen.
Love your reviews Mat but you're wrong about the Peugeot 208 steering wheel obscuring the dials....I've got one , and the steering wheel is very small and designed to look 'over' the top at the dials. You can move it up or down and at 5' 2"ft tall I can see the dials completely. It's a gorgeous steering wheel with a sporty feel....just thought I'd say. Keep up brilliant work.
There's a new i20, and a new Corsa that has received pretty good reviews; certainly worthy of a top 10 spot at the very least. This seems like a top 10 that was made a year ago.
I believe that Skoda New Fabia 1.2 TSI will pop into top 3 from 2015 onwards. Had done the test drive it along with VW Polo 1.2 TSI and Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost in last 2 weekends. From interior side , the equipment Polo and New Fabia offering much better martial and function, more features etc. Polo and New Fabia using the same engine, however New Fabia offering more features than Polo, and the price on Polo SE model even higher than top range model of New Fabia, also less drive fun and much more nosier than expected. Personally, after test drive, I prefer Skoda New Fabia than the other two rivals, less money, great driving experience, high quality and great value for what you paying for, although the Skoda brand comes as cheap brand in public, but seriously i strongly suggest get a text drive then you will see the difference.
A Polo? Really? It's dreary, expensive, unreliable, deeply uninteresting and sucks all enthusiasm out of its owner. A Fabia has the exact same issues, but at least it's cheaper. No, I'd say the new Mazda2 is the best small car.
I have absolutely no clue of what you are talking about. I am a Polo owner and comparing a Mazda2 or a Fabia with it reveals your ignorance on the mather. I say this because I checked all of them before buying the Polo...
Rageofflamesful Dreary is technically subjective, but a Polo is very, very dull. Considering the cost of equipment, it's pricey, quite a few of its engines have questionable reliability, it's too common and unimaginative to be even remotely interesting and I'm very impressed if a Polo can stir any enthusiasm in your spirit.
Rageofflamesful As far as being dreary and uninteresting is concerned, I'm sure most people will agree. As for the costs, here are two links. I've used UK prices for this. Mazda: www.mazda.co.uk/car-configurator/?locale=en-gb&vehicle=mazda2&bodyStyle=2400&baseUrl=../car-config-html5/#baseVehicleId=DE1JBAD2SD&colour=41V&wheel=WHE_03&trim=DW7&navigationType=summary 115 bhp and everything you could possibly want: 17,855 pounds, This is the most expensive Mazda2. A comparable VW (the link isn't fully specced yet): www.volkswagen.co.uk/new/polo-gp/configure/paint/2156/2159 110 bhp (less), non-metallic red (as opposed to metallic 'Soul Red'), no leather seats, 20,345 pounds. R-line is necessary to get a comparable engine. The 1.2 and 1.4 TSI engines are known for timing chain issues, the 1.2 TDI is known for a myriad of issues. The Polo is at least more practical, but it's still far from cavernous.
***** Certainly there is a reason that the Mazda isn't as popular as the VW. The Polo rides on the reputation it no longer deserves, being bought largely by the uninformed masses.
I picked up a brand new Seat Ibiza 3dr SOL in the new year for £10k and I absolutely love it but it is cramped in the back but drives fantastically so much better than a Polo and Fabia!
The ford festa is really good, one of my college mate owns on its 5 seat but there is 7 of use that need to get it so we can stuff the 2 smallest in the boot and the 2 smallest are about 5,10'' - 6 foot and even with all that weight it's is still very quick for a 1.25
We rented a 208 in Majorca and I found the steering wheel obscuring the dials annoying too...then I found the column adjuster and realised it wasn't actually a problem. Took me 3 days to finally think of that, mind you.
i have the r line new polo and its brilliant. very fast and great on fuel. the best in the class in my opinion as i have driven the fords, renaults and vauxhalls
Alright CarBuyer, i've always liked your reviews, but.. - In the video of "Kia Rio vs Polo vs Ford Fiesta" the Fiesta Won against the Polo, but in this video it's reversed? why`?
Nahh in Malaysia we use mostly was Perodua Myvi. Can use it to race, easy parking, can even use it to fly. Some accident i don't know how they just end up on roof of house with no higher ground nearby. Can drift and also use it as bumper car. Annnnnd also very durability And body quite hard though had some harder crash just knock back the plastic and u are ready to go xD ohh and also extremely cheap.
what happened to the Skoda Fabia better than some of the cars here I do think that the polo is the best all round small car. The Audi A1 is good but just to much money
Where is the Vauxhall Corsa? I have driven one for 5 years plus. Highly reliable, nippy, cheap to run and insure and comfortable on back roads and on the motorway. What more could you want?
Yeah thats what i was thinking as today in 2022 you can get a 2013 Corsa 1.4 SXI for around £2 grand , a VW Polo would cost a grand more and wont be as good to drive
Tell you what? I have had 3 jazzes and they are amazing. They are roomy, reliable..... actually they are fab. You have not included them at all. Unfortunately my last one has been written off by yet another rear shunt. They were a tad pedestrian, so in a late life crisis I have a Golf GTI on order. Until it arrives I will use my Peugeot Boxer van which never gets shunted. It's the best city vehicle going.
It really bothers me that Matt still thinks the 208's steering wheel blocks the view of the dials! Man, you just have to adjust it properly! In the 208 you're supposed to look OVER the steering wheel not through it. I've driven one and I've loved this driving position.
This is a new review but already out of date. You have the new Skodâ Fabia, the new Hyundai i20, the updated Vauxhall Corsa with new engines, a new Mazda 2 all been recently launched and they all look very promising. Probably more that I'm forgetting to mention. You'll probably review the new i20 and make it your carbuyer car of the year like you did with the i10. You should have got the 2015 models and then decided your top 10. P.S. I'm not a Hyundai nut . . . I drive the car you placed 2nd here
The only one that can outrun baddies driving a Corvette inside a shopping mall is the Fiesta, and that's a vital capability, the Fiesta is the best period.
The super cute 208 should be the first, the steering wheel is SO cool and makes everything so much easier, beautiful on the outside and the inside, at least in my country is a bit expensive but the equipment is amazing, gps, auto a/c, 2 USB ports, the trunk is small but it's a small car. Lol I'm a proud owner i guess XD lol
I am looking for a car, i just passed driving test last 2 weeks. Can anyone please please tell me what car is right for me for now? I was told VW is good start for learner but i dont know much about car. I would be grateful if you give me tips. Thanks lot!
I like Volkswagen, but I have driven a Polo and it just did not appeal to me. I drive a Peugeot 206, which I love. For a number of reasons, the French make some very comfortable, practical and space efficient vehicles. The boot of my 206 is equal to that of my previous Toyota Corolla and exceeds it because the spare tyre is underneath the car and not covered by a flimsy piece of plywood that breaks at the slightest glance. The only thing I would add is a sixth gear. The point of this comment is just to say that I support Peugeot because I really love the smooth design of French cars and the thoughtfulness that they put into their design.
206 are incredibly good cars, confortable, with plenty of acessories that comes as standard of mostof french cars. But the issue with it are the maintenance, with periodic maintenances usually costing 10% or even more than most of it's competiton. Their suspensions are quite fragible too, here in Brazil they sell well but you really need to be careful because our roads here are abysmal...
Oh come on, a Polo? I like how the Fiesta didn't win for once, it’s just nice to have a change. Still, it is a better car than the Polo and would be my second choice if not a Mini in this list. Polo’s are bland in every possible way and there’s no reason unless your boring that anyone should buy one
if the center console in the fiesta was better, maybe, but until the change that it's a no-no for me. personally i don't think the fiesta and the polo are different in terms of excitment.
***** Polo is far from most comfortable it has, like most VAG cars, firm suspensions. Most confortables cars would be french cars like the Citroen C3 or the Clio.
where is the Yaris ? The yaris had to be in this list.
Yeah and No Toyota Aygo or Corsa ?
Regarding the Polo: "a slight refresh of the front and the back". I bet no one could tell the difference :D

Mazda 2 didn't even get a mention?
I cannot freaking believe that yaris is not part of this list. you have to be kidding us.
you can't tell, coming from a European
A Yaris? Gag... I'd rather eat glass. If your idea of a car is a metal frame with wheels to get you from point A to point B, sure, it's probably good.
Nicholas Mastis Had that car, was bullshit, vendor fooled us. Sold it. Never again.

alexander eisma because it’s crap
In the top 20 list 😂

Im shocked no Vauxhall Corsa ? thats like every young drivers first car ?

I don't own a Mini or a Rio but I've driven both and the Rio was utter pants!
i totally agree with u but lest not forget the mini is a hell of alot more expensive than the rio
But you can buy pretty much two Rio's for the price of one Mini. And that's something
petter4544 you're wrong. This was their opinion based on many factors. The 'most reliable car' video was based solely on the JD Power survey but not this one. Maybe YOU should listen.
For the price of mini, u can buy a well equipped kia optima
The list leans heavily on price:quality/performance. The Mini is quite expensive here where I live and can be almost 20K difference from the top two.
Love your reviews Mat but you're wrong about the Peugeot 208 steering wheel obscuring the dials....I've got one , and the steering wheel is very small and designed to look 'over' the top at the dials. Finally Mat is back!
Look how young Matt looks! Just 8 years ago. He has had a kid now and these days his face shows it.
I'm actually really impressed with the new Skoda Fabia and this is coming from a man who turned down a free Vauxhall Corsa.
Corsa? Mazda 2?
Nah! Just Mazda 2 forget corsa.
Rubycupid Mb nonce car
Not Corsa lol

Rageofflamesful As far as being dreary and uninteresting is concerned, I'm sure most people will agree.

115 bhp and everything you could possibly want: 17,855 pounds, This is the most expensive Mazda2.

where is the Opel Corsa (2012)?? amazing car and affordable
how about the new mazda2? that car looks very promising
When you consider reliability and cost of repair this list is completly reversed.
vauxuall corsa ???
The best small car is the Peel P50
The best *very* small car.
I’m looking at getting a Peugeot 208 for my first car. Looks pretty good to me
I like these top ten reviews, keep up the good work.
Where is the Yaris?
i have the r line new polo and its brilliant. very fast and great on fuel. the best in the class in my opinion as i have driven the fords, renaults and vauxhalls
r u guys serious?no honda jazz at all in that list?i thought that would come on top
I am surprised the A1 is not on here! Only super mini that is comfortable on long motorway drive as well as easy to park round the city.
Alright CarBuyer, i've always liked your reviews, but.. - In the video of "Kia Rio vs Polo vs Ford Fiesta" the Fiesta Won against the Polo, but in this video it's reversed? why`?
What year is the volkswagen polo your showing in the video
Nahh in Malaysia we use mostly was Perodua Myvi. Can use it to race, easy parking, can even use it to fly. Best small car is polo....been driving it and it's super 😍
Where's Skoda Fabia?!?! :((
I would go for ford fiesta and enjoy a better driving experience. I need fun driving.
Who tops the sales worldwide ? Swift or Toyota Yaris ?
Mazda 2, Toyota Yaris and lbnl the Honda Jazz, the only one with decent room in the back!
W h e r e is the Mazda 2 (Demio)? ?? ????????????
Where is the Vauxhall Corsa? I have driven one for 5 years plus. Highly reliable, nippy, cheap to run and insure and comfortable on back roads and on the motorway. What more could you want?
Yeah thats what i was thinking as today in 2022 you can get a 2013 Corsa 1.4 SXI for around £2 grand , a VW Polo would cost a grand more and wont be as good to drive
1 should be Toyota Aygo 2014 because that is more smaller than volkswagen polo but it comes with a five door, it is very stylish and spacious inside
Where's Yugo?
Have you even tried the Honda Jazz/Fit, whichever may apply t your country?
The Honda Fit should be #1.
What about toyota yaris? /hybrid - very cheap to run
My favorite car is Peugeot 207 and I'm gonna buy it when I'm older and have my driving license so 5 years 😅
I have to agree, I love my polo. So much quality
Fiesta all day over Polo
Interior isn’t as good
anything over vw
.... wow .... I proudly own a FORD FIESTA TITANIUM HB .... bought it in 2015 ...
It really bothers me that Matt still thinks the 208's steering wheel blocks the view of the dials! Man, you just have to adjust it properly! In the 208 you're supposed to look OVER the steering wheel not through it. I've driven one and I've loved this driving position.
Thought the Corsa would be number 1
glad hes back
Does the Fiesta come with pipe, flat cap and Slipper's? Or is that an optional extra?

P.S. I'm not a Hyundai nut . . . I drive the car you placed 2nd here
What one would be the best for driving in the city I'm just looking for a new car to get to and from work and will parallel park nicely
honda jazz.nissan note.toyota yaris my top 3
JHOSEL VILLANUEVA
This countdown is perfect !!
I completely agree with nr 1! POLO rules
Alfa Romeo Mito? Fantastic first car. Looks good and is fairly quick if you get the twin air version
Audi A1 ???
Don't get me wrong I love it... but it's to expensive to be on this list :(
I have this little blue Polo, it's cool and sweet :)
Yes polo is the best , I love my polo
The only one that can outrun baddies driving a Corvette inside a shopping mall is the Fiesta, and that's a vital capability, the Fiesta is the best period.
the
No Corsa ?
That car is EVERYWHERE in the UK for decades !
... What about the Mazda 2?
Why did the polo only come 2nd in the hatchback group test with mat and Rebecca?
Peugeot 208 GTI 😍😍
Mini would be my winner
Fabia for it's sheer size inside ist unfortunately forgotten. Has new Motors as well.
I love that polo the colour is sooo nice it's called mayan blue.
Prefer Honda Fit/Jazz or Mazda 2. But my dream car is Mini.
Fiestas are more interesting than Polos for me. Having said that, the build quality of Polos are very very good.
can't believe you missed the Mitsubishi Colt
I am looking for a car, i just passed driving test last 2 weeks. Can anyone please please tell me what car is right for me for now? I was told VW is good start for learner but i dont know much about car. I would be grateful if you give me tips. Thanks lot!
Yes Honda jazz it my first car , I impressed easy to drive 🤩🤩😅😍
How come FIAT is completely ignored?? I thought Punto will be in Top5...
This version of car wow is weird 😂😂😂 l was like woah who is that at first!!
Carbuyer, sponsored by VW
Filipe1020
When they are not sponsored by Ford ^^
Simple design makes it last long,if a car's design is too modern,it makes people yearn for better and improvement.
*****
Polo is far from most comfortable it has, like most VAG cars, firm suspensions. Most confortables cars would be french cars like the Citroen C3 or the Clio.
Vdub is love...Vdub is life
New Mazda 2 blows them all out of the water IMO
What about the Up! and Citigo?
I'm about to buy my first car and I think it's between these two and a Fiesta.
Any thoughts?? Thanks
+maybaby13x I would buy the citigo its super cheap and its really good
Vauxhall Corsa - one of the UK best selling cars and doesn't even get a mention?!!! explain that one please!
Audi A1 should have been first. It is the best built and the most stylish inside and out small car.
Hope you consider test driving Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1750 turbo soon
what about nissan micra?
In love with the Peugeot 208. Polo is so boring and outdated 😐
That Polo is sexy, best looking car in its class no doubt. The Polo Blue GT is a real head turner
Corsa VXR is best small hatch in my opinion mate
How is the renault clio is in the 7th position please say me and Kia Rio is on the 3th position. What's the smart guy do that top ten
Fiat 126p is the best smallest car in the world and in Cuba is car of the year 2016.
No Skoda Fabia and Audi A1 too bad ... but i do agree with first place as Polo
What about the Honda Jazz/Fit ?
I want a small car that gets good mpg that is quieter and a bit more upmarket
Totally agree
