Really appreciate your video and honest and detailed information on the Power Wagon my man, just subscribed! Thank you and I cannot wait to see Brad’s video too. Been thinking about a JLU Rubicon, but want space/room/storage in the vehicle and want the vehicle to have good capability out of the gate to get out and explore, camp, and get off the grid...Thanks again bud! 👊👍🇺🇸
welcome aboard!! yeah i have the JL and Power Wagon and that is a winning combination right now. Jeep excels at hardcore offroading, and the truck excels at everything I've asked it to so far. To be able to jump in it, drive way back in on forest roads to go hunting where others don't... you can't beat that.
I also track my mileage on Fuelly. I can compare my 2018 Tundra, a half-ton truck, to your PowerWagon. My Tundra has a lifetime average (2 years, 16 000miles) of 11.2 MPG. My best tank was also 15.6 MPG. My worst tank (8.63 MPG) was this spring when I was hauling 10 000lb load after load of clean fill in a dump trailer while landscaping. I think my average should be better, but for the first year of the truck's life, it did mostly short trips of 2-3kms, not really having a chance to warm up at all (I also live in Manitoba, where it gets really, really cold, which doesn't help). Now I have a beater car for the short daily trips, and the truck only gets used on longer trips where it will have a chance to warm up and stop dumping fuel into a cold engine. My average should be going up over the next year.
for how heavy this truck is it really does good. i don't let it warm up much cause i park in a garage that i heat to 50. but if i'm out camping or something in the winter i'll give it 5-10 minutes. the truck appears to drink 8/10ths of a gallon per hour at idle per the obd port scan tools.
@@JustinKingOffroad I just got to the part where you overloaded your truck with flatbed trailer. Haha, I did similar this spring when landscaping. I picked up a Bobcat S185 in my dump trailer. Total weight was about 11000lbs, truck's only rated for 9800lbs. It was a 20 min trip through the city though, so I wasn't too worried. It's definitely not something I'd do often, though, or for a long trip. ibb.co/XLCnHPh
Each oil change adds x13 corrosion protection power to the undercarriage. :) And on the hawes fairlead, it should be polished smoother than what Dodge, err, Ram, has done with that coating. Rollers runs the risk of pinching the synthetic line at the roller end bushings and cutting it.
16:11. You could load the under floor storage space with some survival preparedness supplies. The type of stuff you will hopefully never need, but if ever you do, you'd be happy you have it there. 👍
@@JustinKingOffroad It's a good idea. If you ever got stranded in the back country and had to wait a few days for help to arrive, you would be in good shape with that.
For your braking problem, I had a ram that did the same thing replaced front & rear with drilled & slotted rotors & ceramic pads stoped on a dime. Try it you will see a major diff.
My girl keeps trying to talk me into getting Gladiator. I keep telling her that I could get a Power Wagon for the same cash, and get almost twice the vehicle. While I'd miss having the open air of the Jeep it's just not worth it to pay the same about for a vastly less capable truck. I was surprised about the mpgs on the PW. I was actually expecting it to be worse. The best mpg I've ever gotten in my 2dr JK Rubi is 16 and it averages about 14.5. So it's not that much worse.
I just drove all the way up to Wheatland Wyoming for some service work on the power wagon and pulled 14.5 on the interstate and I started with 12 so I was getting far more than that to reach that average.
I have the 2018 twin to yours, like your interior upgrades from the 18 like heated rear and power ports. Love my truck, towed a 34ft trailer with no issues. Had to put a canopy on mine so I get some drone from the non-stock exhaust. My mpg is 12.5 city/highway on reg fuel with occasional 14s if my foot is light and run premium. Stock wheels and tires, 35s coming soon. Totally agree on the brakes!
When you change the oil grab the filter with a zip lock bag as you twisting it off the bag will catch the oil. Problem solved, I had the same problem, just don’t let it be too hot obviously.
I have a 2019 tradesman short four door. Love everything about it. However, Next one will be the extra four door with ram boxes. I use the backseat as a work closet... So... Thanks for all of your videos!
@@JustinKingOffroad what.. is your opinion of using the Deckd bed storage system... I do not haul couches n things in the bed. Have you thought of that as a recovery implement storage for the Power Wagon? I know they are pricey.. yet???
@@michaelrobbins6694 those would be really nice but honestly I often use that full bed space. I don't know how big of a deal would be to lose that bottom foot...People that have those systems seem to like them.
Love hearing a Ford guy converted to Ram. I just traded my F150 5.0 that I’ve been driving for almost 7 years and loved for my new PW. Dealership was 2 hours away and driving the PW home I fell in love with it. Best decision! Thanks for an amazing thorough real world chat about how a PW is as a daily driver. Did you post a link for the exhaust? Is it bolt on or welded? Amazing sound.
I would still always put premium in the tank simply because of the additive package you get. And before you say or think it, *it is not snake oil!* It really does protect your engine, particularly the piston rings and cylinder walls, which is the #1 area of engine wear. Under normal operation, fuel will "wash" away the oil film on the compression stroke, meaning the friction reduction that the engine oil normally provides is greatly reduced in the presence of fuel. The friction modifying additives in premium fuel goes a long way to reduce ring and wall wear from normal operation. Even if it costs more per mile, think about how many miles you're adding to the engine. And you still get better range per tank as well.
I’m in the same boat, either PW or Gladiator. Gladiator is expensive. PW can be had for the same price, but in my suburban home a bit too large to fit in my driveway, and probably more truck than I need. I drive a Frontier now and I like the size. But if I was going full size I would seriously consider a Power Wagon. Nice complete review.
Just stumbled accross your channel, awesome awesome content!!!! I love about 2 hours north of Moab Utah, big Jeep guy but would loooove a power wagon!!!! Look forward to the review
Have a jeep and looking at turning in my Chevy 1500 for the PW. I drove the 75th-anniversary edition yesterday and the wife fell in love with it. I was skeptical about the towing but I don't tow much over 10k anyways. I think the trailer or boat is 7500. thank you for answering a lot of questions I had. great video
Hey, thanks for sharing your Power Wagon with us. I've owned several different models of pick up trucks and was more partial to Fords. However, I love the looks of the Dodge Rams. As a retiree the Power Wagon is out of my budget limit and looked at a couple of used models for 30 grand, one 2018 and one 2016. The Gladiator is out as it has lost its attraction for me.
While oil filter location is not great it does have a drip guide that keeps the mess to a minimum. I’m sure you noticed a small funnel located right under the filter, you just crack the filter and let it drip for a while slowly that way it only gets onto one crossbar and doesn’t splash all over the place.
The brakes on the 3500 ram are boosted. The 2500, across all trims, has a mushy pedal. I have to pump brakes in my power wagon, neither of my 3500 rams had squishy pedals. Even my 2500 cummins had squishy brakes. Also, when I was in Cheyenne Wyoming I had the same gasoline results your seeing. However, once I moved back to North Carolina, where we have 93 octane, if I don’t run premium gasoline, I get ticking with 89 and knocks with 87. At 30k on the clock, I do get about 1-2 mpg better with premium but I use it mostly because my engine doesn’t sound like trash.
I shut the whole abs system down with the zauto tazer and about ate the steering wheel coming to a red light. The abs system on the truck appears to be the cause of the mushy brakes. With it disabled they seem amazing.
@@JustinKingOffroad no because it doesnt allow the teuck to shift into those higher gears as fast which pits more strain on the tranny and boggin the engine. 5 to 6 mpg difference in my 2012 gmc. Not to mentiin it will help with your braking problem a bit too since itbholds downshifts too. Jus sayin give it a try, if it dont work.. Oh well just drive it normal.. Hope it helps
@@JustinKingOffroad in the older trucks tow/haul just wouldnt allow it to shift into overdrive, all the newer trucks its wired into the actual shift points in the tranny, but it varies with the engine as well.. Literally like a shift kit, or a tune in a ricer
@@JustinKingOffroad Justin, love your channel! If you could only have one would you pick the JL or Powerwagon? This is my debate with 3 kids. Also any regrets not getting the Cummins Ram?
@@GYMGUYFE if i could ONLY have one... it would be the power wagon. Awesome details! Great video! Stellantis owns Jeep and Ram. Price differences are mostly due to demand. Many Jeeps are bought as a style statement and never taken on a dirt road. That's fine with me as an investor. I like the Gladiator but think it's underpowered. The PW is the best HD off-road. The biggest penalty is weight and in some cases size in close quarters. Great choice! Just my opinion.
Thanks great info. Michigan is high also on fees. I pay $240 on my GMC SLE all terrain. 6000 lbs. pulls 10,700 up 60 degree off road 15 city 19 highway. Love it 19 inch wheels. I couldn’t afford the Power Wagon. So, I went with a 2021 2500 Tradesmen with the Power Wagon Package to save until I could afford the full Power Wagon. I just ordered it and should have it in about 6 weeks!
I bought a weigh safe hitch for my 19, 2500. I was able to get away with an 8" drop. For a power wagon, you probably want a 10" drop. I really like the weigh safe hitch because it's really easy to swap between ball sizes. I have the hitch that will show you tongue weight.
i have a 18 pw with airbags. my camper weighs 11k and it pulls it with no complaints, it gets 7-8 mpg towing but there is always enough power. wish it had the 8 speed and front camera but i dont like the new body style so i got the 18 instead of a 19.
7-8 seems to be the number from another friend that frequently pulls his camper too with a power wagon. i've considered getting one myself for certain trips.
Happy you're loving your truck. WIth Ram or any Chrysler/Fiat products, my worry is more mid to long-term reliability. There's a lot of reviews out there in the RUclips land that would be me fearful in forking over dollars for Ram but if you do keep this for a few more years it'll be interesting how you fair. - Never Mind, I just watched your 2 year review :)
Going to order a new Tacoma Trd off road next year. Going with ARB Summit front bumper and Warn winch. Would you go 10k or 12. 5k winch? More for peace of mind than anything while in the Beartooth mountains near Red Lodge MT. Enjoyed the Alpine loop in our Jeep Liberty few yrs back. About as technical as we will ever get. Great videos thanks for posting.
I was looking into one of these after having 2 1500 Rams. What I didn't like during test ride was lack of response when hitting the gas paddle. My 1500 gets up and to much better with 5.7 HEMI. I did like everything else including no drone noise when switching to eco mode. It does have about as much HP and torque as 1500 so I decided to keep mine.
On fuel grade...I mix my gas octane. I will fill tank with low grade fill up later with mid grade half way. I have a 2012 F350 C.C. 4x4 Lariat 6.2. I have not done what you did to figure what grade is best mileage but mine seems to do or like better 87! I am about same elevation as you. I am a Ford lover true and true. You could try a drain valve on your oil change
Just FYI - the Gladiators start at $38k for the manual Sport. The Rubicon/Mojave just have tons of options that add about $15k to the price of a auto Sport model. I love the PW but the mpg would just really suck, which would for any HD truck though.
I did an electric exhaust cutout on mine, it’s deeper and less raspy than a muffler delete because it doesn’t have to go through the resonator. And when I’m cruising with the fam, driving through the neighborhood, or want to hear the really nice stereo, I close it and it’s back to stock.
Hey Justin, hello from Kimball Nebraska! Great video and great review! Really appreciate you posting it. That format was easy to listen to and not a lot of junk music. I also would like to complain to the guy that put that oil filter right there! Someone should make an oil filter relocation kit for us 😉
@@JustinKingOffroad they make by-pass filtration kits for pretty much anything with a filter. It takes a bit of cross referencing. You cross-reference your filter to the filter adapter. Then get the dual bypass filtration kit. You will have the full flow (regular type) filter and the ultra fine filter (by-pass) filters down to like 2 microns. It’s all in the same location. They do make quick kits that are diesel specific.
If you remove that front seat center console you can build different boxes for whatever you need and they bolt right in. It's pretty useless as a seat, but the hidden storage is nice. I built a rifle carrier and ammo storage box for mine. A 12v cooler would be another idea.
Santa dropped me a 2020 PW😃 I too have always been a Ford man until 2006! Your financial breakdown was awesome! I run similar evaluations and spreadsheets for my vehicles, hobbies etc. Is there anyway you can do a similar break down on your JL?
Good vid. I've also watched TrailRecon's vids, I have driven the Ram and can't argue it's a nice truck and my second choice, I went with the Gladiator. Maybe after a year or two I'll switch over.
Watched the entire video too. I bought a 2020 ram 1500 only 3.21 gears.. I rushed into it, trying to make the perfect choice now for my truck for at least the next 5 years.. Made a mistake with the 1500
Love the Power Wagon. I am a chevy guy but when it came to buying a new truck a couple years ago I went with Ram. I did not get the Power Wagon, went with the 1500 Sport with the 5.7 which for towing is rated at about the same as the Power Wagon. Would likely get a bit better millage with the Power Wagon when towing but everything has trade offs. And Brad bought a Power Wagon??? Guess I need to keep up better on Instagram.

Each oil change adds x13 corrosion protection power to the undercarriage. :) And on the hawes fairlead, it should be polished smoother than what Dodge, err, Ram, has done with that coating. Rollers runs the risk of pinching the synthetic line at the roller end bushings and cutting it.
The right rollers won't pinch line though
16:11. You could load the under floor storage space with some survival preparedness supplies. The type of stuff you will hopefully never need, but if ever you do, you'd be happy you have it there. 👍
i have thought about throwing emergency food (like dehydrated backpacking meals) in there. that would be a great use of the space.
@@JustinKingOffroad It's a good idea. If you ever got stranded in the back country and had to wait a few days for help to arrive, you would be in good shape with that.
@@MaxZomboni I have a 72 hour pack that usually rides with me if I'm going into the hills. But would still be a good idea to have more in there.
Watch out for drawing rodents into your vehicle looking for your "prepping food supply": wood rats love the new RAM wiring...
For your braking problem, I had a ram that did the same thing replaced front & rear with drilled & slotted rotors & ceramic pads stoped on a dime. Try it you will see a major diff.
Yeah I was going to run the oem stuff until the pads wear down a bit more, then look at changing them out.
@@JustinKingOffroad The sooner the better!
I put the Powerstop Z-36 kit on my 1500 night and day difference.
Looking at a 2022 Power Wagon tomorrow! Very excited!!
they are pretty awesome!!
Thanks for the tip!
We do this on aircraft all the time. Excellent trick of the trade.
I have a 2019 tradesman short four door. Love everything about it. However, Next one will be the extra four door with ram boxes. I use the backseat as a work closet... So...
Thanks for all of your videos!
those mega cabs are awesome! does not come on a power wagon though :(
@@JustinKingOffroad Stickers! LOL
@@JustinKingOffroad Thanks for the reply! I figured if I needed sides I could do a bed stake side board.. planning for next truck!
I did not post a link but it is a solo performance muffler delete. You literally bolt it on in your garage.
Can’t wait for the air intake review!
It's on the truck now!!
@@JustinKingOffroadThanks for the reply and all the content. Did you go the cotton or dry filter route? Curious if it’s worth it for the PW vs stock.
@@Eternal-274 dry filter, i'm not a fan of the oil that sucks through the cotton ones.
Great video and review! Thank you for the honest review.
Checkout Fumoto oil drain valve. They make draining the oil a breeze with no mess. There are several different types.
Was looking for PW vids and found your channel. Wanting to buy a new PW within next 6 months. Looking forward to your adventures.
Trail Recon (brad) just picked up a 2020 too!! go check that out.
@@JustinKingOffroad I follow TR too! Thanks
And you still get better range per tank as well.
i run premium in everything gas, and it responds much better!
Beautiful truck man..I love the color...I'm seriously thinking about the power wagon..thanks for the video very informative
I was laughing so hard because I did not even realize that there was more storage under the center seat! I’ll have to look in mine tomorrow.
I think the trailer or boat is 7500. thank you for answering a lot of questions I had. great video
Truck looks awesome I want to get one soon thanks for the review
12,000 miles in one year. I guess you only drive it on weekends. I did that in 3 months.
Lol I work from home so that's a decent amount of use
10k miles a year isn't a crazy amount but it's the use of you work in a shop within an hour drive range from your home.
You might consider a Ram 2500 Tradesman Crew Cab 4x4 with the "Power Wagon Package". Good value
While oil filter location is not great it does have a drip guide that keeps the mess to a minimum. I’m sure you noticed a small funnel located right under the filter, you just crack the filter and let it drip for a while slowly that way it only gets onto one crossbar and doesn’t splash all over the place.
I put all my tie downs in one side of the I floor storage. Stashed a first aid kit, and other goodies on the opposite side.
Justin while you are city driving put it in tow haul mode, it changea the shift points and you will see a significant mileage difference
That would burn more fuel wouldn't it?
@@JustinKingOffroadIt sure would, but I don’t think that much. This guy’s dreaming.
I expect a commission since I shoved my PW in your garage.
Hahahahaha it's your fault, and the other Mike!
Peer pressure.. Its a thing🤣

I need to tow about once or twice a month WAAAY more than the JL can handle. and the power wagon has done everything the jeep has, and done it more comfortably. only exception is the super skinny trails, i'm not quite used to wheeling the massive truck on the tight ones, i've marked up the paint a bit.
Awesome video looking into buying at a 75th anniversary so I appreciate the detailed video
Great video brother, thanks for honest info 👍🏽
I love how that truck sounds
Thanks great info. Michigan is high also on fees. I pay $240 on my GMC SLE all terrain. 6000 lbs. pulls 10,700 up 60 degree off road 15 city 19 highway. Love it 19 inch wheels. I’m 74 next truck the Dodge “Limited”. 4X4 mega cab 2500. 4 inch lift. I’m all crippled up and like luxury with 4 wheel security. Live on farm in snow belt Michigan
I couldn’t afford the Power Wagon. So, I went with a 2021 2500 Tradesmen with the Power Wagon Package to save until I could afford the full Power Wagon. I just ordered it and should have it in about 6 weeks!
hey that's still a power wagon!!
Thanks for the thorough review! You helped talk me into it - bought a 2020 Power Wagon last week!
Any hitch recommendations?
I bought a weigh safe hitch for my 19, 2500. I was able to get away with an 8" drop. For a power wagon, you probably want a 10" drop.
I really like the weigh safe hitch because it's really easy to swap between ball sizes. I have the hitch that will show you tongue weight.
Great video, thank you for taking the time to make it and share it with us!! How long have you had your call sign??
Love my 2019. Have about 20k miles on it now. 12 city is normal, but 15.6 was the best running 65mph for about 350 miles
Pretty honest and fair review. Appreciate it.
i have a 18 pw with airbags. my camper weighs 11k and it pulls it with no complaints, it gets 7-8 mpg towing but there is always enough power. wish it had the 8 speed and front camera but i dont like the new body style so i got the 18 instead of a 19.
7-8 seems to be the number from another friend that frequently pulls his camper too with a power wagon. i've considered getting one myself for certain trips.
Great vid, just purchased a 2020 power wagon. What running boards do you have? Look great!
they are the white knuckle offroad sliders. they can take the whole weight of the truck on a rock. and i've tested them lol!
@@JustinKingOffroad Cool, Thanx!
Thanks for the review. You have a beautiful truck.
My dad got a 2018 2500 model with the 6.4 hemi, for like 40-or-something thousand. Kunes Country was the MVP for the hookup
Thanks for your thorough explanation of your thought process prior to purchase.
i love the PW. I too did not buy a Jeep Gladiator because of the sticker price. I ended up getting a Chevy Bison and it has been a good truck so far.
I see those trucks around town they look good
Just ordered a Delmonico red 2021 PW, moving to Windsor this spring, I’m sure we will cross paths!
Sweet congrats!!! I was in Windsor yesterday. Multiple customers there.
- Never Mind, I just watched your 2 year review :)
i do plan to keep the truck for about 4-5 years! we'll see how it holds up.
Great review. Beautiful truck. Thank you for sharing.
Just for the extra winch reduction the 12k might be a good option. But... For normal use the 10k is plenty.
This truck will spin the tires just punching it, plenty of get up and go. That's weird you felt it being sluggish.
Awesome idea! Would love to see a pic.
I did a short video on here, so you can check that out. A posted a thread on Ram forums too. 👍🏻
Well done review. Super helpful.
Hey Justin, hello from Kimball Nebraska! Great video and great review! Really appreciate you posting it. That format was easy to listen to and not a lot of junk music. I also would like to complain to the guy that put that oil filter right there! Someone should make an oil filter relocation kit for us 😉
Thanks for watching, yeah the oil absorbent pads will get a workout here before Christmas again lolol
Amsoil makes them. Spendy, but you get the best oil filtration possible.
@@bryceweaver8211 thanks Bryce, I'll look into their relocation kit then. Thanks
i'm pretty sure these kits are for diesels.
Oil filter was my deal killer, after having RAM 1500 for 2 years. Unless they change location of that oil filter I'm not getting another one.
If you remove that front seat center console you can build different boxes for whatever you need and they bolt right in. It's pretty useless as a seat, but the hidden storage is nice. I built a rifle carrier and ammo storage box for mine. A 12v cooler would be another idea.
Looks great! Only issue, won't fit in my garage.
They are tall!!
Yeah, I was noticing his shoulder is about even with the top of the hood!!
My long bed fits perfect
I have a rebel and can confirm oil changes are no better on them.. Looking at upgrading to a Power Wagon now..
Santa dropped me a 2020 PW😃 I too have always been a Ford man until 2006! I wanted to try A Ram so I bought a 4X4 2006 new mega ram 1500, love it, to date has only 70k on it and never been in the shop👍 Run only non ethanol gas, and that goes for the PW, I love the PW but haven’t had a chance to really four wheel it yet, oh I kept the 2006 👍
I wish we had E0at the pump, I'm tempted to drive to Laramie WY where it is and run a tank.
@@JustinKingOffroad it may cost more but well worth it! Take 55 gallon barrel with you and fill it up in Laramie 👍

Lol I know!! I tried. It had to be 30 minutes.
Your financial breakdown was awesome! I run similar evaluations and spreadsheets for my vehicles, hobbies etc. Is there anyway you can do a similar break down on your JL?
Gladiators look funny until they get lifted
I agree 100%
I also concur
Agreed, i thought they were going to be a giant flop until i started seeing them on 37's and 40's
Ram boxes on the side of the bed are a great option to get. I have them on my 19 power wagon and store all my recovery and go bag gear in them.
i wanted the wider bed space so opted for a tool box. i could see having much more storage though in the ram boxes vs my tool box.
What brand and model are your running boards? Thanks!
white knuckle offroad sliders, they are awesome!
Great review - thank you
Good vid. I've also watched TrailRecon's vids, I have driven the Ram and can't argue it's a nice truck and my second choice, I went with the Gladiator. Maybe after a year or two I'll switch over.
I think I might buy one... so many choices lol
Watched the entire video too. I bought a 2020 ram 1500 only 3.21 gears.. I rushed into it, trying to make the perfect choice now for my truck for at least the next 5 years.. Made a mistake with the 1500
Yep, my door squeaks as well in cold weather on my PW.
I removed the resonator. Love my 2015 Tradesman.
Pro Tip on buying Premium - don't! Buy Octane booster from Walmart at $3.00/bottle.
