The Gemini axles are exactly the same as the 1972 GTR-UX1 Torana (fine spine edition). They cross fit perfectly (apart from the 4 stud and 5 stud configuration). The XU1's raced with 300+ hp so the axles will not be a problem.
agreed, they need to go for a cruise in both once the Gem is done. Bonus win if Al and some friends can bring the FB and the mini along for the full retro line up!
Good to see Darren. Used to chat with him on forums like Oz gemini for ages. Between him and Elky there's so many parts and info. Also quick trick, if you want negative camber or caster, swap the arms left to right. Cheap trick from the gemini race series.
Ahhhhh , I used to chat with Elky heaps, I even think my build thread might still be on ozgemini, for my td 4ze1 gt3082r coupe build, Incomplete of course , but I still have it here, and nearly running with the turbo :phahaha
Marty will have a smile from ear to ear when he'll drive this. Revamping your steering components from scratch, from nut to washer is one of the best things you can possibly for an old car. Even if it's just a revamp with same-same parts.
aaaaw yeah 🙂 This car is known here in The Netherlands as an Opel Kadett C. My granny used to drive a green metallic one, with riffles over the rear window.
Torana as well, people pay close to millions here for a good chassis. They don't realize its probably cheaper to import a Kadett from the UK and custom make the body parts that are different then sell it 250,000+ 🤣
loved the old kadetts. i was stationed in germany for a bit and saw several generations of em. from "Oliver" to this one to the more modern hatchbacks. i always liked their quirkiness. this may turn into the prettiest kadett cousin on the planet
There are cars that are simple and just work. The Gemini is one of those cars and its great to see a build like this bringing a legendary car back to life.
hhmmm Turbo it will have! looking forward to seeing Alan back. Also brilliant that you guys are always showing a lot of support to Blue Collar Australians through your builds. Different specialty suppliers (consistent with the Brumby build) just sharing the love.
The world's first and only $100,000+ Gemini! :) For sound deadening, follow the rule of 75: Once you have covered 75% of a panel with sound deadening, you have removed 95% of the noise. But in most cases, simply adding a small piece of deadening to any part which rings when you hit it, will resolve all your noise issues.
As we get older in finding more fascination with projects that revolve around memories or feelings over performance. Cars are getting faster and heavier and more digital and secluded. Thanks for keeping the spirit of hot rodding alive by building what you like. Not someone else everyone should be able to love what they do even if it doesn't make sense on paper.
i remember watching the video of you guys picking up the gemini from japan. epic. i love seeing the project come together. your dedication is truly legendary!
Restored a Datsun Prairie few years ago, watching this build reminds me of the simplicity of everything and how easy it was to work on as an older car. No nonsense, or electric gubbins. Just basic mechanical parts which made it great fun to do. I love everything about this so far, great restoration/build.
Really enjoying the series so far. I remember watching the episode where you bought the Gemini and have been eagerly awaiting this build. There's always something special about these dream builds. Absolutely love the color and wheel combo. Looking forward to following the journey from here in the states.
I pushed about 180 hp through a Chevette(UK version) axle for just over 2 years, which lasted just over 2 years more than I thought it would😂😂before letting go during a semi hard launch, breaking the pinion gear clean off of the pinion shaft. My plan was to fit a Dolomite sprint axle when the original inevitably broke, but at the time I chose the easy route and used another Chevette axle I already had, needing it ready for a track day that weekend but that axle gave up almost immediately and the replacement for that exploded spectacularly on the weekend at about 50-60 mph simultaneously forcing or allowing the nearside rear wheel, brake drum and half shaft to make a bid for freedom 😊 I gave in after that and actually discovered that the Dolomite axle needed very little to adapt to the GM shell anyway,FFS!
i fucking love this channel lol love how marty just got a few parts from a guy who turned out to be a fan and just brought him on to help so freakin cool
The only channel (well the best) for good vibes in the auto space. Always great to watch at a troublesome time - to lift your spirits as you know there are MAAAD mates out there doing great fun stuff. Thanks lads.
I know you've mentioned the engine that was on the racking isn't the one thats gone in...., i can only hope that means you've only swapped from the the 20xe to the 20let. Hints at Al (turbo yoda) the front hidden in the gemin poster suggest boosted whatever youve gone with...... loving the series already.
The torque tube is a design used by Opel on the Kadette and the Manta. The Manta A is the same width as the Gemini but is stronger . There are aftermarket steel torque tubes available. The front brake disks can be swapped for Audi 80 rear vented disks retaining the 246mm diameter but are 23mm wide vented . They just need to be re-drilled for the 4×96mm PCD of the disk mounting flange . Couple this with Opel Calibra/ Vectra (I'm sure there's an Aussie equivalent GM) brake calipers with carriers, these will bolt on and they're single pot , sliding fist design.
Marty, my Opel GT has the same rear end with the torque tube/3rd link. My car was built as a very competitive autocross car about 20 years ago and has a rare ZF LSD. Iirc it has FB RX7 rear coils. The GT went goofy with the front end too and has a transverse leaf spring in the front subframe that connects to the lower control arms, but luckily Opel GT Source in the states makes custom lowering leafs.
Oh I’m so excited to see what engine you guys pick. Also that aftermarket sound deadener is an underrated game changer for the quality of your car. My dad and I covered the inside of our old 80 series Cruiser with it and it’s a night and day difference.
I love this build. Properly done, probalby best on youtube. Usually influencers just drop turbo kit and widebody with wrap onto clapped out car and call it a "sick build bruh"
Yeah I hate the wheels, coilovers & turbo build. MCM does the same and that's why I skip a lot of their vids. But when they swap an actual good engine (like with marty's civic) I'm always here.
This is so awesome!!! Not only is it a really good looking car... It has that sentimental love written all over it. Thumbs up to Dominoes for sponsoring the whole thing too. I haven't ordered their pizza for quite some time... Yet, Dad ordered it all the time while I was growing up. I ate sooo so many entire medium pizzas in one sitting from the ages of 8-12. This car reminds me of dad... He had a blue Torino Cobra when he married my mom in 1969... It is just really special to see very pleasant and good feelings go into a lovely automobile.
I'm getting "will this fit on my Honda" vibes from that lil teaser at the end. Both the "who" and the "what powerplant" vibes, but I guess we'll see next episode
It better be turbo yoda! Loving the build. Can’t believe I have to buy another poster. I only missed the first one ore two but have the rest in my office.
I drove 19000km in my gemini back in 2015,it was the best car I've ever owned. Definetly split opinions but on the whole people loved it. It was metal flake blue with chrome pepper pot wheels and I lived it so much, miss that car. This series has bought back some great memories, thanks

I hope whatever engine you choose for this.... you use a cherry bomb vortex muffler. trust me please. it sounds so damn good. like really really good. quiet at idle but decent sound at full throttle. and then the tone is just, chef kiss. and it flows slightly more than typical glasspack mufflers too.

That cut to Darren after reading the letter got me good
Same here mate. 😢 So cool. 😎
Yeah man, actually made my day what a legendary move. Support a small business and make a new mate in the process!
The respect for just inviting people to help after seeing their shared interest in projects is top tier. Never stop
Reading your spoiler right before getting to enjoy it myself got me good
Can't explain why but that made my day I thought that was cool i had a big grin on my face!

Bringing in Darren is the best. What a resource and chill guy.

The 240Z had been my favorite project so far, but this is giving it a run for its money! No one does these in-depth dream builds like you guys.
agreed. i adore old styling. shoving new hardware underneath is fun. taking that old car faster and better than the factory ever thought possible.
