It’s really that simple and should apply pretty much any car being ls swapped. Just run the factory gauge senders from your old motor on the new one. Obviously all cars will have different ways the gauge wiring is ran, so isolate the wire’s going to each gauge in the cluster. From there just route them to the senders on the motor as well as the pcm output wires for tach and speed!
Also here are few things to add plus some stuff I forgot:
1. That 150amp breaker coming off the battery is way to weak to crank this V8 and will constantly trip. I'll probably end up replacing it with another busbar.
2. For the steering column I am going to install an astro van bearing, just didn't get it in time for this video.
3. For the gauges, speedo cable guys will need a gps conversion box to run the mechanical speedometer. Link in the description.
4. After your speedo and tach is wired, the signal will need to be calibrated to read correctly. This can be done via Hptuners software or with the Dakota Digital SGI-100BT box linked in the description.
5. FYI on LS swaps, you can use the ICT Billet adapter linked in the description to screw the oil sender into the side of the oil pan/oil cooler port. You may also need to use some 1/8 npt adapters from the hardware store to clear some headers. Only Gen V LT engines have that port I used due to the vacuum pump, LS motors do not.
6. Lastly I didn't include links for the 3rd gen oil pressure and coolant temp senders because all cars were optioned differently. Just go over to Rockauto.com, enter your vehicle info and choose the correct STOCK 80's sender.
Hope this video clears some stuff up regarding gauge wiring on these thirdgens! The Trans Am will return again shortly!

Hello Matt I have a ? For you can you put a 4.8 or 5.3 into a Buick Enclave?
Thank you so much for the information. Am getting started on the swap this winter.
Love the videos quick question though. How are you running your charge wire from your alternator to your battery
Matt,. Hi
I have a digital dash help, How to hook it up, please.
Im running a 5.3 with and 4L60e (2000camaro trans).
Only tach works and battery
Matt, I swapped my 3.1 to a sbc from a 1997 Yukon and am running the computer from the Yukon. My gauges have not been working and you helped me get the speedo working tonight. I feel like there is a huge gap in info on getting your stock gauges working with a swap, and you've helped fill that tremendously. Thanks sir!
So glad to see that Firebird back in action. Great music choice as always Matt. I just did a column rebuild on my 83 last year. That was an experience 🤣
That was awesome! Lots of detail and why you are doing, what you are doing. A guy can appreciate all the hard work that's going in to all of this including the time to make the video. Thanks Matt!
I swear I'm going to use these videos as how to guide to swap when I get around to it. Lots of great information. 👍 80s theme is dope
Great production on this video man. Loving the build so far. About to start the twin turbo ls build on my 85 Iroc soon. Motivates me even more to get started.
Wow. You covered a LOT here. No wonder it took weeks. Great job explaining WHY you were connecting things. Peace
As being one of the og subbers. Ur vids have come very far and informative on how you now present urself
Yeah, I will watch as many videos of this format and quality as you can put out. Keep up the awesome content! Also, you are making miss my old '89 Firebird something fierce.
I’ve been waiting for more T/A vids! You rock, Matt!
I keep checking for the TA videos. Keep em coming!
You’re videos are thorough and super helpful Matt. Thanks
Great music on the time lapses! Always a good day with a LsxMatt upload. Glad to see the screaming chicken getting closer to completion. Keep up the great work Matt! As always the video was worth the wait.
Playlist?
Matt, you da man. At my request you delivered. I my opinion. The best 3rd Gen content on RUclips. I want to start a channel for my 91 RS Convertible. Way to go! Brother!💪🏽
I have always loved the 80's rock music theme that you got going on. I totally dig the Terminator style soft rock music that you have playing while you work on the steering column. I have the feeling that the world will be saved after that column is finished just because of the background music lol. Keep the inspiring videos coming especially Tahiti, they motivate me to do the same thing to my 2005 Cadillac STS as I refurbish it.
Good to see some TA content. Did the same steering column rebuild on my 86. Used a Grant wheel however. I went Auto meter gauges and just traced and made a diagram using my original dash.
Sweet! Totally Radical! LoL. I grew up in the 80's, so I remember when these cars were new. Now I have 4 of them. My '89 GTA is getting the 6.0/6l80e treatment. This video is extremely helpful! Thank you, and keep up the great content.
You wholesome individual. Can’t get enough of the swap videos. Every video is worth the wait. Thank you sir
Thanks for a very well explained video.I'm certain you have expanded people's options when it comes time for an engine replacement with more modern tech.😀
Turned the video on for less than 5 seconds and already you’ve gained +100 points in my book. The Tesla shirt is a BIG plus for me. Was raised on them, was just playing several of their songs on my acoustic guitar yesterday.
Good to see ya back bro
Great video. Lots of great information. Very useful to me as I eventually plan to do a lot to my Camaro that you are doing. Priceless.
SWEET! Love the Bird. Ahhh ... Lazy? I think not. Excellent video, especially as I am finally starting my LS swap in 3rd gen, all these "Pearls of Wisdom" make for a cleaner more joyous install for us lucky viewers, Thanks Matt.
Awesome 👌
I am doing an 6.0 with a 4L80E into 1986 Chevy G20 extended top.
The part on the steering column is huge help. I am probably now considering moving the battery inside to the battery bank.
Also I have been on hold waiting for this video for awhile life saver!
Amazing - Love the vids - Nice details and providing links to parts needed - going to need this info for my 87 Iroc -- Thanks for the great Info.
Dope
Video as always
I just started working on getting my 86t/a
I am so motivated
Matt, thanks going for going into a lot of detail and providing links too. You're a freakin hero 👏 Can't wait for more trans am content
Wow! I really needed this video for my future 4th gen Firebird LS swap, thanks!!
4th gen? Shouldn't those be fine with an LS swap? They're totally set up for an LS except for the general motor stuff and possibly transmission right?
Dude the 80s techno synth is my jam, great helpful video, thank you!
Great video!! Nice work, you make it look easy!
This is the easiest way I've seen this explained thank u I'll definitely be following you u have made life easier
Man, that’s one clean freaking build. We’re going all out full drag racing for the 91 Camaro, but I’ll be using your ideas here and stuff for my late fathers 1972 Chevy C-20 we used to drag race but I plan on taking the motor and trans out and LS swapping it with modern amenities as well
This channel should have ten times more subscribers.
I can't possibly thank you enough Sir for this amazing video. 5+++ STAR RATING!!!
Dude this is the Cleanest I've seen.. this will translate to a 86 Gbody running a 2008 LS out of a Avalanche with a 4l80e
Really clean and great job 👏
Great job, Matt. Thanks for sharing.
I can't believe someone hasn't said anything about the queensryche shirt!! awesome brother
Some great information here that’ll be super useful for me on my swap thank you
Awesome work Matt!
Nice work Matt. Looks great.
I' going with a Edelbrock pro-flo 4 and this is going to help me a ton. Thanks!
Great information! I'm currently doing a 67' Camaro, I have yet to find a detailed LS swap on the first gen's. It's always, "This is what worked for me..." Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but this video is saved for tips and tricks, thanks again!!
One video has answered all my questions
Great content, very helpful. Im in Norway, swaping an L83 into my 89 Trans Am Gta
Amazing Video lots of great info I will be using for my swap. Thanks
Great detailed video! On the C207 connector, I found a keyed power source and used it for years without checking the diagram. One day my car started powering off when I hit the break. Turns out it was a cruise control wire that came from a switch mounted to the brake. ( not sure what made the switch start working again) The wire can be used for the torque converter lockup instead of wiring a relay. Hope this saves someone a step!
Thank you guys definitely not as intimidating after actually seeing it done great video 🍻🍻🍻
18:03 that’s exactly what I’m trying to build to I have an 84 trans am I put an LM7 5.3L in it with a 700r4. I depinned my harness and put it all back together nicely with loom, and I’m just in the process of trying to hook it up but need some lew info on keeping the stick gauges and interior close to stock. Great video!
30:33 and there’s a second mullet magic lolllll
So much knowledge! Thank you for sharing!
The steering column was so cool!
I love the music you picked in this video.
It's funny I just recorded a video a week ago with a mullet on for my 3rd gen shifter install I'm posting on Wednesday and of course I'm scrolling and see you with a mullet 🤣
Great video! Ive been thinking about getting another thirdgen and swapping it.
Great job keep them coming. 👍
The 80s style synthwave style music has always been my absolute favorite
Love the build
Doing a 350 swap on my 91 Firebird. Great video.
Alot of this reminds me of when I did the v8 swap in my S-10. using the camaro engine harness with an L98 TPI and blending it with the S-10 harness.
Didn't realize it's that easy to take apart these steering columns. My high beam switch rod fell out and I had to take the column apart to put the rod back in, but broke the wiper stalk wiring. The column I replaced it with was out of a later model and is missing the cruise switch and has different wiper wiring than my '83. Good thing I kept it. Might try rebuilding it now.
Ok... Ok, i saw u rip brake assembly apart, wire wheel it, rust converter it, rattle can it, grease, and reassemble with new bushings. Subscribed. (Its all in the details)
Great detail on your video
Sweeeet! I approve highly of this content! 👍
Excellent work
I can tell you have been turning a wrench for a long time.I have been doing it for over 20 years now.the amount of knowledge you have always surprises me with your projects.awesome job Matt.it’s going to be a really nice car when your done.love the channel bud.👍👊
Great video. Best help for what I am doing as so many videos just show how to make a new harness or use a painless harness. I am trying to place a 07 Northstar into a 85 Fiero. Want to keep both fuse boxes and do exactly the way your doing it. Thanks
Nice, I ended up having to do rebuild my steering column too. I'm also looking at the same system, hopefully I can figure it out. lol
Do you think it would be possible to install dbc cruise control in an LS swapped firebird that never had cruise control? I found your channel, just got caught up in this series, and just snagged myself an 89 firebird. I plan to follow your footsteps with an LS swap. I love your content. I think you have a big future in this type of entertainment. Keep up the good work!
Can’t wait for the next video on the c100 harness run through
Its already out! Towards the end: ruclips.net/video/a-vZ2eaxqRI/видео.html
Hey Matt love the content I’m trying to find my reverse lights wiring in my 87 camaro z28 it was a 5spd car now running an lt1 t56
I have been looking forward to this video, your engine bays are clean and uncluttered. My only concern is the drive by wire for the throttle. My wife's Avalanche has this system and compared to my Camaro tuned port its geriatric in response. Are the aftermarket systems more responsive or maybe something you can adjust. Great content as usual keep up the good work. On a side note the Tahiti brake upgrade did wonders for my wife's Avalanche thank you for the information.
Love the channel was missing the firebird was about to ask what happened to it
Great work bro!!! I am done with my LT swap just need a shifter now 🤦🏾♂️ and we can make a test drive…. FYI I bought the speed engineering headers and true dual exhaust system, it fits perfectly but not a big fan of the clamps they supplied with it. but when I take it to the exhaust shop because there’s a very short distance from the headers to connect, I’ll have him weld some spots to stiffen it up A LOT…
Here’s something I’m trying to figure out, how are we going to get the manual mode for the 6l80 to work???? You know I had swap time do my harness and he told me I can’t have both BCM and transmission module because I did the 6th gen dash swap with the gauge cluster I went with the bcm. The manual shift isn’t a much but will be needed for any racing especially burn outs
Amazing video well done , I'm lucky if all of my stock gauges work with my stock engine all at the same time lol
I had an 86 t/a identical color scheme. 350SBC FROM 1976 suburban. (Ran great.)
I also had a 79 T/A also had the bird on the hood. Gold with gold honeycomb wheels. 400 big block Pontiac. Both were automatic. The 79 was a project my woman made me sell before I ever aquired a good engines & trans. It had rusty quarters and such. My blue & gray 86 I actually drove didnt have any rust.
man how many cameras do you have running? kick ass job!
I have been waiting for months for Holley to send me a Terminator X. Now I am thinking a PSI harness would be better and they can deliver NOW. Thanks Matt.
Your music went from Motley Crue inspired to TRON within the first 5 minutes. Hehehe. Will have to see what's next when I can finish the video.
Glad u got the hair back!
Having said that/its a pretty good video.Having said that,my rust bucket 67 Chevelle should be simpler/ I hope.My minds still not made on going LS.??
Oh thank god you came up with this. Im sick of my intellitronixs digital dash being inaccurate asf. The only thing that is spot on this the tach
I had intellitronix gauges in my Camaro years ago. They were absolutely awful and the odometer would randomly reset back to 0!
@@lsXmatt i just got to doing the swap back to the stock gauges and i was able to get them all working except the tach and the speedometer. I have everything wired up but no response
Man I love the trans am content, I too am building one up, mine is a 91 convertible. I was curious the next time you go out to a pulling yard if you see the front bumper side skirts would you be willing to pull them and me buy them from you I am having no luck finding them in my area out in the yards. Thank you in advance.
Man i get the same way, i kick ass on my car for like 2 weeks, then ignore it for a month lol.
I chose to do mine the hard way though, i started with the truck harness and cut/lengthened sections to make it all neat and clean, c100 will be all tied in neatly as if it's all one harness, a lot of mine will be nearly hidden. I have a fuse/relay box that's going to be for fans, high and low beams, etc. Going all out on mine. Hoping to have mine back on the road by December.
But i am looking forward to the next video, because i have some questions about the c100 that surprisingly i either can't find the answer to, or i find contradicting answers to
I’m LS swapping a 1988 Monte Carlo SS with a 1999 5.3 and a T56 transmission, I done my own simple wire harness with help from LT1swap and the RUclips channel ucandoit2. It’ll take some time and patience but hopefully I’ll be able to use all my original gauges I know the Tach and oil pressure will work since those wires are coming from my PCM, the Purple 10g starter wire and 16g Pink Key On wire I’m trying to figure out where to tie those wires into, some say tie the Pink Key On wire into the old pink wire that was on your distributor and just use the original starter wire or splice the purple wire to the original starter wire. I’m old school still learning the LS scene as I go LOL
Good to see this beast getting some love again. While the cluster is out, maybe it would be a good idea to hunt down a factory 8000rpm tacho for the cluster.
Shouldn't be too hard to find one of those. If you leave the poor old 6000 rpm tacho in there it may succumb from getting pegged into oblivion otherwise. 😎
I’m converting my 89 camaro from an old tbi 350 that the previous owner put in to carbureted. On your wiring harness that you cut out what wires did you leave connected on the pcm end if any?
Awesome content by the way!!
That's a nice harness!
Yes! It's nice to see the Trans Am again!
I'm following in your footsteps by repainting the engine bay on my '83 Z28. I should be ready to spray it next week. When you masked off the fenders to paint your hood jambs, did you let the masking tape hang over the edge of the fender or did you line up the tape edge with the fender edge? I've watched the painting video 20 times and haven't been able to tell.
tape just prevents overspray....so, if you dont want anything painted, tape it up... if you are OCD and need to have the tape line up with the edge of the fender, then do so...just be mindful of over spray.
TLDR; you are overthinking this
You mention that your 85 TA is / was carbed, obviously I am jumping ahead, but in "my" planning the last hurdle is the fuel delivery system. I am going in tank pump, 4th gen LS1 tank and trying to stay as stock as possible, and looking for the best plan for lines. Look forward to how you accomplish this. Thanks.
I almost missed this. I seen the 80"s Nugget in the thumb nail and thought he don't know shit about cars and moved on. Nice content Thanks.
This is cool and all, it would be really cool to know how to use any newer gauge, in any older car. So for instance if I wanted a particular cool looking set of gauges out of a 2018 lincoln, to work fine in my 1991 Camaro. It would be real nice to know how to do that.
Your videos and ls1swap website have shown me alot. Watched this video and will prob be watching it another 5 times so i get everything right. All these wires scare me. Ive been backyard mech for over 40 years and will dive into anything-thats what she said- but wires, to me, arent fun. Always think i will wake up to a car campfire
👌🏿 u the mane but I wanna no what was the wing over the battery 4 😂 Amazing video
Nice synthesizer tunes!!
Yeah I felt like I watching flash Gordon or some 80's sci-fi movie sound track. 😆
AMAZING VIDEO LOVE THE SECTIONS AT THE BOTTOM
Yup super easy if you’re mechanically inclined.
Q: will that kilmat stop cabin heat, if I just put it from under the dash to the rear drivers seat?
Gotta get in character with that mullet huh Matt😅
are you going to try and start that car through that breaker or run another wire around the breaker for your starter? I ran that same breaker on my third gen and it would trip just when lights and sound system were running. looks great and clean!
Thumbs up just for the intro!!!
