Get this video to 5000 like and I will straight pipe this thing!
Hey could you do something different and buy a project truck like a 5.4L Gasser, and build it I am building my 5.4L and your videos make it easy to understand Im struggling I want to put a Turbo into it, and a bigger cam but I am not that smart with this stuff!
Straight pipe it for certain
What ever you’re going to do it anyway. No 5K needed 😂
OK Josh there is a solenoid on the driver side that controls the waste gate on the turbos . Then there are 2 plastic lines from solenoid to the turbos waste gate check the line's they do rub through on anything they touch. Then check if there's is vacuum at the solenoid if not then check the vacuum pump it's on the passenger side front on the motor.
Is your trailer a 25ft or 30ft?
Build the 6.5 build the 6.5! Old school build would be sweet!
I think if he is going to build one it should be in a surplus HMMWV
Just build the truck, brotha. You know you want to. We know you want to. We want you to. It will be awesome!
The Ole rattle trap will always smoke but a set of injectors wouldn't hurt.
Can get a cheap boost gauge to see if you're actually making any boost. Vaccum pump is probably pooched. Could always wire the wastegate open to test.
A 4 inch straight pipe would be really cool also make her whistle! Great video
To help with the smoke and just better driving experience take the vacuum wastegate off and put a manual 10 lb spring there are a few videos on doing that I believe Jesse pelkey here on RUclips has a video on doing a manual wastegate
I could listen to that engine idle all day
As a 6.5 and LB7 owner, I think I might know the issue. Delete that vacuum pump on the front of the engine and make the wastegate manually controlled with a spring, just-hook, and a wing nut. It seems like the vacuum pump is crapping out and making it not close the waste gate
Maybe but watching the speedo in this video the fucker runs pretty good. Can’t ask for much more out of 6.5 at least in my experience
@@Ageman6058 it seems to be slow compared to mine. And all I have done on my 6.5 is the wastegate vacuum pump delete and the spring set to 10 psi
@@bignix23my 6.5 moves pretty quickly because of the weight of it being a 2wd 1/2 ton the truck is completely stock
@@connorbrandt3207 mine is a 4x4 3/4 ton single cab that moves about 3/4 of the speed my CCLB 4x4 LB7 moves, so not too slow
I’ve heard that’s an issue on these. Had a friend that owned one, & he was talking abt that exact issue.
More black smoke means too much fuel. Either someone turned up the fuel or air starvation.
Crazy thing to me is my girl friends Dodge just like that broke down same way so I listened for the fuel pump it was working or so I thought lol after checking all fuses and swapping few parts off a parts truck I had laying around I thought let me see how much pressure fuel pump is putting out because it would start if you turned the key 3 times fast then crank it fire for 2 seconds bearing any pressure eventually went to 0 psi slapped new pump it was ready to go also do straight pipe on the 6.5
My 8 year old was given a 98 6.5 that needs a lot of work. It will be a big project but hopefully has a cool truck to drive when he is old enough.
Mine 9 year old son has a 98 5.7 rust free
@MrRod632 heck yeah that's awesome
My dad bought his new in 98, after his passing I got the pickup. All 8 injectors was replaced and the turbo. It did whistle perfectly upon spooling up. I removed the huge muffler to a straight pipe and it really sounded excellent, and the only time it smoked was when I put my foot in it. Only real issue I had was the keepers on the valve would snap loose on the head.
I have been wrenching on 6.5s since I was a wee lad. I have never actually done any turbo or exhaust mods (surprisingly enough. Haha) Now is as good a time as ever! I have a PT Wiring Solutions HX40ii and a diamond eye 4" exhuast ready to go in!
Throw a set of marine fuel injectors in it. Should be able to get a set pretty cheap and they supposedly add 40 horsepower, and it might fix the black smoke issue.
6.5 injectors are mechanical. There’s no horsepower increase unless you up the injection pump output
@@joelaidler I’m pretty sure that the different fuel injectors they make for these mostly help atomize the fuel better so they can help increase power, but it mostly comes into play if you either crank up the fuel or tune it depending on if you have a mechanical pump or not
Thanks for the video man glad to see a ol 6.5 get some love. I would check the timing on the pump could be out of time and killing hp and making g it smoke more.
I owned a 94 6.5 turbo. I miss it. I’m glad you finally got one. I messaged you about getting one a few years ago, maybe you finally saw it. Stick a 6v53 in it. That was my dream.
People put down the 6.5. It has design issues that are not its fault. I have a customer who has a 6.5 that has its issues fixed and some upgrades. It is stronger than an LLY Duramax.
Nah
put down the rock man. Not even in the same league as an lb7, let alone newer duramax engine series.
Straight pipe, cold air intake and a wicked wheel would get her singing for sure
It looks like an S10 sitting next to the red truck 😁
Absolutely does lol
Follow the vacuum line from the waste gate it goes to a little vacuum controller valve thing that likes to go bad or leak and cause a no boost situation
Add water methanol injection. That’d be interesting to see if it cleans the exhaust up.
I’ve owned a couple of these 6.5 trucks and I think what’s going on is you need to delete the vacuum pump and make a manual waste gate spring. It will also help your turbo noise a lot by putting a manual spring on the waste gate
Hey truck master, love the videos keep up the great work!
Could be a few things on the 6.5L. A lot of times it was the wastegate control solenoid and the boost sensor. I’ve had it plenty of times too where the vacuum pump itself is bad. Yes you could delete the belt driven vacuum pump but then you’d lose your heater position controls unless you wired in an electric vacuum pump since those operate off vacuum.
Man….. long travel pre runner for the dunes. You are so close to them. I wanna se you send it off test hill!!
Wicked wheel ii and 5" straight pipe!
Love the budget truck I definitely think you should do more with it. I have an old one like this. And it'd be nice to see what I could do with it.
Aside from that vacuum controller thing off the waste gate line to look for for the boost issue, you can buy a potentiometer and put it inline with the map sensor signal wire and it works as a boost fooler for those things. It has to be a 0-10,000 ohm potentiometer or something tho if I’m remembering right. Can find it online how to do it it’s super easy
4in straight pipe definitely! My dad had a 97 6.5 with 4in and it sounded amazing!
Do a 8” bed stack! I did one on my 1986 6.2 Detroit that I put a turbo on and it sounds awesome!
I don't have a 6.5 anymore but would love to see a build on one. Miss mine alot 😢
It's an older diesel, the fact it could do a burnout it impressive. I'd take that over the ugly orange truck any day. With a little tlc, it would make a good truck.
Since you're the expert, how long should I let my diesel idle when I get somewhere?
If you pull the intake and cut out the plenum plate and add the wicked wheel 2 ;you’ll get more air and less smoke, FSD cool and change the resistor in the fsd to a higher # you’ll add a little more power.
Yes straight pipe and cold air
Could be a bad vacuum pump it controls the waste gate or just put a spring waste gate on it
I had a wobble fused to an extension trying to take out 6.5 turbo bolts
Full build on the obs pls ❤
i might have to keep those events in mind!. i never realized how close to grand rapids you are, its a small world!
I’ve always been curious of these being a little bit modded. I’d say put some power to that we’d love it!!!!
For the 6.5. I’d get some cheap fenders and doors for it, do some wheels and a level on it and run it! It’s a cool old classic beater!
Had a 94 6.5 a while ago. Thing screamed with a stock turbo. I miss it, and want another at some point. For now, a 2nd gen 24 valve it is.
Straight pipe it !! To many quiet diesel trucks around 😎
Id really like to see you redo that 6.5 be a nice truck to have in the garage
LOVE 6.5 CONTENT!!
Loved my 97 6.5 Turbo! Stack it!!!!
Put a wicked wheel on it, A k&N filter, 4 inch stacks and dump a whole bottle of hot shot fuel treatment in the tank, raptor line it and sell it !!! Maybe some newer stock wheels if you have some laying around.
Black smoke is unburnt fuel, oil is usually a white, blue haze
Who's your go-to mechanic shop for a 6.7 cummins?
Finally some 6.5 content!!
I’d like to see this wicked wheel install 😊
You should do a single stack right behind the cab. I had one on my 6.2. I did 2 and 3/4 straight back to the box then into a 5 inch stack and it sounded really sweet lol. I’d highly recommend it but you don’t seem to listen to your suggestions like sunkiss. Nobody said orange in the comments but it’s your truck man you do you.
the generic hx35 with the wicked wheel and 10cm housing was the best all around performance and sound. i tried the "super drag" hx40 with 18cm housing and the truck itself was loud as hell since it had minimal drive pressure.
How was the performance with that hx40? I'm installing one with a 16cm2
Get ahold of the A/C Delco injector cleaner... it may need some injectors
Do you have a boost leak. only when you're like above a certain PSI of boost, maybe
It has to be performing better, I would love to see a high flow exhaust (or straight pipe lol) I would think the high flow exhaust will help the turbo spool characteristics in a way that both improves power and the black smoke because the black smoke could be unburnt fuel which increasing the boost a hair should help clear out. The OE exhaust might be clogged up anyway.
Dual stacks, one in each front box corner, strait pipe, pipes must be hockey sticks, not just strait up, and also remove the front rack thing.
stacks only work on this truck because its a long box so it makes it look ok
My guess is on that green Chevy is the exhaust is full of oil from the leaky turbo so I think you needed the straight pipe it
Maybe check the pmd resistor maybe someone put a number 9 resistor in it and you need a number 5 resistors
We need a stack! But only if you are not going to restore the old girl. Maybe a hood stack, then you could film how much it's smoking. Love your content, love the Sunkist. Thanks for all you do.
Josh that is one sweet orange truck
How does that 6.5 compare to a stock LLY in acceleration?
Show Ryan your new Turbo, lol. Try running a gallon ? Of injector cleaner through it.. Stickture. They are probably fouled pretty badly. Run a stack up through the bed. Beyond that, maybe you do some tuning on it. Use your electronics and check all the parameters. Then, put a fork in it and call it good. Shop truck.. parts hauler.. loaner.. plow .. winter driver, so your good rigs avoid the salt / deicer...
I love watching your videos 👍🔥🔥🔥
Coal is an indicator of lack of air. and too much fuel. I would be looking over your intake system, check for leaks/torn boots/loose clamps. If that is good, verify injectors aren't leaking down(puddling/dripping). Setup a camera, pull the injectors with the lines still attached and crank it over. Watch the spray patterns.
It might be tuned you will have to pull the glove box out and yes build it love my 6.5 great daily
I'd like to see the obs green machine nice again
Build the 6.5 make it sound great leave it looking like it does
I bet money it's a fuel pump. I didn't hear anything when he turned the key on. I would definitely check to see if it has fuel pressure and then change the pump.
What ever happened to the inner cooler to cool fuel
I definitely like the engine work videos over the pimp my ride customs videos, both are great, but I appreciate the problem solving of the engine repair.
I would pressure test or smoke test the hot and cold side of the system.
i put a wicked wheel on my 6.5 china whirly boi "hx30". had to take comp housing to machine shop because china whirly factory has a 5mm +/- tolerance 😂😂😂. made it a year until i lost a cyl (ironically road-tripping to p/u two dmax (almost long blocks)
I think it'd be awesome to fix this truck up or to improve it. Theirs a ton of these out there super cheap. I know they're not real sought after but can they be made to be stronger and more reliable without a ton of money?
Black smoke is a sign of a fuel issue, white smoke is more inline with an oil burning.
Need to delete the vacuum pump controlled waste gate & put a mechanical spring waste gate on it, then you can dial in boost better, and make it more reliable.
Please keep and do a small build series
A burned out glasspack with turn down. That would be epic!🇺🇸🍻
What’s easy is doing mods to a broken truck, what is hard is restoring a truck to smooth factory working condition and passing smog. Personally, it would be more interesting to see you troubleshoot the truck and fix it 100%.
Budget builds are always worth it; someone always is fixing old iron on a budget.
I need some one to work on my diesel ,just don't run right anymore
My gpa had a 6.5. It was proof anything under 200hp is reliable
Fuel filter was a good call but id try to clean the whole system and run addictive in the fuel ⛽️
Try some internet injector cleaning remedies. Check your fuel pressure. (random thoughts) Straight stacks, if you can get it running clean. If you get to a point that you're not going to invest to get it running better, don't mess with the exhaust. Looking forward to the Dodge fuel issue.
Keep the truck for us old school desel folks, for inspiration
more turbo would probably lean it out a bit and less black smoke, or needs to be leaned out. Is this ebay turbo larger? maybe i missed it in your video
Put a 4in on the 6.5 straight pipe
I have a 1998 6.5 with 3 inch straight pipe an seven inch tip an it sounds like a 454 with a glass pack
I just got an AD for American Collectors Insurance that was over 30 seconds long, un-skippable, and then when it ended it stayed on screen with no way to return to your video, i had to close it and start it again.
Can I haul with a 9 blade on a lmm
Check for boost leaks. I’d imagine if that boot was full of silicone it was to try and remedy a crack in the boot or a poor seal.
Fuse or relay or pump
What’s boost at? The smoke could be from actually not hitting enough boost to burn the amount of fuel being injected into the engine. That’s just a sign that there’s more fuel there than can be completely combusted. Too much fuel or not enough air is where my thoughts are
I worked somewhere once that had all 6.5 and they all smoked like that.
As far as the black smoke, how much oil might be built up in the exhaust that still needs to get cooked out?
That’s a great point
Good stack
Put some Hotshots secret in that bad boy that will clear out that black smoke.
Honestly, I would have just swapped to a better turbo. I have a cheap hx40wii turbo that I got from Amazon on my 82 k5 that I swapped a 6.5 in place of the 6.2 and it's so much better than the gm5 turbo I originally had on it.
That being said, usually what is actual bad is the CDR valve, which causes excessive oil in the intake, making it look like a bad turbo. The black smoke could be a bad vacuum pump/vacuum system for the wastegate if it's a 94+ electronic 6.5. That's fairly common.
love the truck, I would buy it.
Go super retro with k c lights in the bed on nerf bars.
