I tried honey nut Cheerios, with ARFID! (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder)❤️

  • Trying new foods with ARFID, honey nut Cheerios! It did not go well, but at least I tried. I will try a different cereal.❤️☺️
    *
Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a diagnosis that can be found in the DSM-5. Approximately 0.5%-5% of the general population have ARFID.
    *
There are three types of ARFID:
    1. Avoidant
    2. Aversive
    3. Restrictive
    *
People can have more than one type, or a combination thereof.❤️
Although research on neurological conditions and eating disorders remains limited, studies have consistently found that people with various neurodevelopmental differences, including autism, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, and intellectual differences, seem to be at a greater risk for developing eating disorders like ARFID.
    *
Although up to 54% of individuals with ARFID are autistic, not every individual with a diagnosis of ARFID has a diagnosis of autism and vice versa.
    *
Neurotypes and ARFID subtypes are factors to consider when discussing support and treatment plans. What may work for a neurotypical individual with a restrictive subtype will likely not work for an autistic individual with an avoidant subtype.
    *
We hope that by sharing our journeys and information about ARFID, we may bring awareness to the diagnosis and acceptance of those with differences.

I don't have ARFID, but I used to have strong food sensitivities as a kid (I still have some now, but far more managable) and it honestly awes and impresses me how willing you are to try new foods, even after realizing the smell and texture were gross. I can't help but think back to all the meltdowns I had as a child because the thought of even putting these squishy, smelly foods in my mouth for a fraction of a second made me want to gag and cry. Even going in for a second bite after the first one was gross! I could never. I hope you reward yourself generously every time you do things like this because you deserve it.

He did really good. I was surprised by how big of bites he took. My 13 year old is autistic and has ARFID, and whenever he is willing to try something he also inspects it visually first, then smells it, then gingerly touches it to his lips to test the texture. If it passes those he’ll touch it with his tongue, before taking the tiniest of bites.
Most foods continue to be a no. But once in a while we are happy to discover a new food for him. ❤

I do this, and I'm 52yrs old. My 19yr old son gave me a drink to try. It was green, and supposedly "healthy." I smelled it; shook it; started at it, while moving the curious liquid around the container. I put the opened top to my closed lips, and allowed the liquid to barely make contact. I didn't like the way the texture felt on my lips, so I gave it back to my son, and said NOPE....I didn't like the texture, and I could tell IMMEDIATELY that if THAT had gone into my mouth, I probably would have been sick. 🤢🤮

this might be super unhelpful but I prefer my cereal soggy (please don't come at me 😭) Do you have a preference between more mushy or crunchier textures? Because if you prefer mushier it might be cool to try letting the cereal sit for a bit until it gets soft. Plus this way I feel like I get to enjoy the actual flavor of the cereal more (ie sugar) because it soaks into the milk. Anyways that's just what works for me! (I absolutely hate the crunchy-ness of cereal). Thank you for sharing your experience with ARIFD ❤

@@soniccookie655Same. Dry with a glass of milk was how I would eat my cereal. Hated it when it got mushy. Definitely texture adverse when I was little. I forget when I became ok with it, but the texture grew (slowly lol) on me. Sometimes just eating the cereal straight out of the bag, eating all the best looking pieces, is chef's kiss. 😚 👌🏻

The thought of any soggy food makes me want to puke. Soggy bread from something like condiments, soggy fried chicken, soggy cereal... if it gets soggy it's disgusting. I get so sad when I get chicken strips from the deli and they are soggy by the time I get home because of the steam. I almost puked on my dad when I put my hand in a bucket of KFC chicken while putting it away and touched a particularly soggy piece. I have a lot of food sensitivities, but soggy stuff is one of the few that turns my stomach just at the thought of it.

I think ARFID kids are super tasters, and a lot of our foods have chemicals in them that are not good for us, that ARFID kids detect. For example, the cancer causing chemical Hexane is used to clarify vegetable, canola, sunflower, safflower and other oils. Grains aren't that good for us, so the cereals are fortified with additional vitamins, which also give off a smell that isn't very appetizing. The best things ARFID kids can eat are whole foods with healthy fats, natural vitamins, and protein such as eggs.

    • @_mxbird
      @_mxbird Месяц назад

a lot of neurodivergent people also have issues with texture, which is totally unrelated. a lot of safe food for people tends to be highly processed foods with little to no variation, and thus a higher chance of predictability. i don't think it has any connection to an inherent knowledge or sense of what is "healthy." also, eggs 9/10 are the worst texture ever

    • @EmilyAllan
      @EmilyAllan Месяц назад

@@_mxbird I really appreciate your comment and the new information you've provided me so I can understand what it feels like to have ARFID.
To clarify, I think some things in foods that taste bad are things that are not good for us but a lot of people can't taste it.
When I was a child in the 1980's, processed foods tasted a lot better than they do today. Back then, they used real ingredients instead of fillers and chemicals that simulate real food. I am suggesting that ARFID kids can taste the artificial and it doesn't taste good. For example, cheeze itz don't have real cheese, Ritz crackers no longer have butter, honey nut cheerios don't taste sweet and oaty like they did when I was a kid. I hope that helps you understand my point of view. Have a great day. :D

Good for you for giving it an honest try! I actually don’t mind them but I don’t eat cereal very often. We always had “healthy” cereal when I was a kid so I have long been used to corn flakes, regular cheerios, shredded wheat, special K, etc. Raisin Bran, honey nut cheerios, or frosted shredded wheat was a treat for us!
Also, the heart shaped holes in some of the cheerios are because they claim cheerios are heart healthy.

I'm 32, audhd female, living on my own with similar issues and bounce between safe foods.
I like some noodles, despise others, same with rice and as far as milk goes, I only drink a certain brand of soya.
The dollar store sells Big Daddy Chocolate Chip cookies and small bags of sun chips.
Some days, that is all I live on plus the necessary chocolate protein powder blended in soya to help with the lack of nutrients.
Recently, I discovered a ravioli type noodle at cosco (or rather my mom had me try it).... I ate that, and only that, for a week and have a tenancy for putting things others might find weird on my noodles (like lemon poppy seed salad dressing because its one of those things I could maybe drink and be pleased).
ARFID is a bothersome thing sometimes... most times... but so exciting when something is found that works.
Other things that work for me (always a particular brand + container type):
    - tomato soup (replaced mushroom soup)
    - specific crackers
    - specific cheese
    - specific bread
    - costco frozen onion soup (I like that I can just put it in the microwave for 6 min)
    - pesto (pc brand) [There's been twice where ARFID kicked my butt and I went F it and ate the entire jar with a spoon just to eat something not revolting]
I've accepted I need to keep trying new things and although it's hard, I've had to accept taste buds develop as you age, so tastes and adversions change and shift... stress and other things can affect as well.
Some days, it feels like a total RNG role on whether or not a food will be nasty.
"Something in you is better than nothing in you." Is what someone said one day after I fainted due to lack of anything (including water).
Since then, I have made myself eat at least one "meal" (meal meaning full tummy since satiated is a lie [brain says done, body thinks done = not enough food]).
I also had to learn to forgive myself when I end up wasting food, knowing I am not doing it intentionally and need to try something else.
    As for cereal,
I like the chocolate cherios and only those, with soya milk, and eat after 45s soaking and no later. Worse case, I mix it around and I have chocolate milk. Although sometimes the grainyness does me in 😅

What I learned is that there's a comfort zone, a learning zone and a panic zone. Learning zone means you're curious, you're not feeling panicked or stressed, you're maybe a bit nervous but willing to give it a try. That's where new learning can happen. If you slip into the panic zone, it's best to end the experience right away, because nothing will be learned while you are panicking, hating the experience, etc. You will actually just reinforce the negative connection. And we can't spend all our lives in the learning zone, but going there occasionally is nice, because sometimes you hit the jackpot and you try a food that's actually really great! That's how I got horchata, I'd never had it before and it is excellent IMO!

It's definitely a cereal that's best to eat sooner rather than later because it really does mush pretty fast. Grape Nuts holds out much longer, but you gotta be down for the CRUNCH unless you microwave it with milk and honey (totally recommended).
But cereal in general is so tricky. Each has its own flavor, *texture* and chaos. It's an adventure unto itself, honestly.

Don't add much milk. I have a strong aversion to soggy foods. Add about quarter bowl full of milk, no more. Add half a bowl (at least that much) of Cheerios.
Mix it around a little and eat. Bottom stuff won't get soggy if you eat it within 10 mins.
Should be crunchy as you eat it.
Rice Krispy cereal bothers me. Goes soggy real quick.
Chex mix (corn Chex for me) cereal should be eaten fast....or be like me and eat it straight from the box. I like to pop it between my tongue and the roof of my mouth. So yeah, I eat one piece at a time, lol.
I won't go near oatmeal..cooked anyway. I've had a certain habit for as long as I can remember...if there's oatmeal around me, I'll eat it raw --- especially the packets (not maple flavored though. Yuck). Brown sugar is my fave. Can go through a box of the stuff in one sitting if I'm given the opportunity

I have arfid but i also have a weird mix of being someone that seeks sensory but also avoids them. So a lot of foods need to have different textures in order to zero out that one texture that makes me wanna shrivel up and hide in bed.
Like i dont really like cereal unless its super soft but if i eat the ones with chocolate or those weird little balls ( that are in some cereal bars) or if they are whole grain then i like them way more. But letting them soak is how i like it. Theres also some that have a nice perfect crunch to them thats not too crunchy, almost painfully crunchy. Like a puff crunch and then theres some that have like a soft crunch that feels almost rubberish and thats the worst.

My kiddo was just diagnosed with autism last month (AuDHD ftw!), and he's always gone through, what we called, cycles. When he was younger, he didn't eat meat for a few months, but then started again. Same with only wanting a certain food for a while. For him, it's a texture issue, not taste.

Honey nut Cheerios is so bland to me. The knock off brands surprisingly taste better. I also love the apple cinnamon flavor more.

I will smell, examine, touch, etc....until I think it's ok to put into my mouth. If I don't like the texture, I will instantly spit it out; feel like puking. I do like Honeynut Cheerios, but I HATE Toasted Miniwheats....🤮

The faces I was making watching this. My scared face. My worried face. Why did you take such a big bite?! Why was there so much cereal and milk in the bowl? I would just try a tiny bit. It did get easier by far as I hit my 30’s. No way I was trying a ton of things. So maybe tastebuds grow up and sensory issues get less. My parents are Ukrainian and my mom once made cow’s tongue and tried to say it was chicken. It had bumps on it. She put gravy on it. I do not eat gravy on meat. I only eat it like once a year on mashed potatoes maybe. She used to make liver & gizzards and borscht which is a cold soup with beets. Thankfully I was allowed to make a PBJ which would make it my 2nd of the day. I was told with my daughter it may try having something 10 - 20 times before she liked the taste. I have a hard time asking her to try that many times! My dad likes to say come on try it! Stuff that smells bad, looks weird or is slimy like crab. Nope. Not a fan. I am 46. It’s 10 pm. I am eating a muffin for dinner bc I just can’t bring myself to eat the other food even though it is food I usually eat.

Gosh I wish I was that brave with my arfid. I've been able to expand a little bit since being with my husband (foodie & a chef) but it's like tiny nibbles. And if it's a no on the first bite it's a long time before I can try again. Ive also noticed I am worse if im with people, possibly due to fear of judgement or stemming from previous unpleasant interactions such as teachers standing over me until I finished what was on my plate
