  • There are many great choices in the midsize truck segment. The Honda Ridgeline may receive a lot of flack from non-woners who claim it is not a real truck. On the other hand, those who have or currently own a Ridgeline have little to nothing negative to say. On the other hand, the Nissan Frontier offers what many would consider more traditional truck-like features. In today’s Vehicle Visionary video, we line these two up to see what the similarities and differences are. Is one better than the other? See for yourself.

I owned a 2019 Chevy Silverado 5.3L V8 and traded it for 2023 Ridgeline RTL-E with 4k miles on it ($42,217). So far, Ridgeline blow my mind. So comfortable, quiet and smooth ride, like driving some luxury car, but with all pickup truck features. Honda's all wheel drive is a miracle, no need to switch between modes and can get you thru all situations. LOVE IT!.

Ive gotten as high as 27 mpg on my trips. The way the back seats fold up gives almost a flat floor and with a couple furniture pads from harbor freight my dog is a happy camper. I have both. Ridegline is better all rounder. It has awd for nasty weather like in the PNW. Much more practical as it has the trunk in thr bed and drives much more like a cuv. The only thing frontier has its off road capability over the ridgeline. If you dont ever plan going offroad than the Ridgeline is the better truck. The ridgeline does everything better than the frontier except offroad.

I was comparing these two trucks and every other midsize truck the last two weeks. I like the way the Nissan looks, but in the end chose the Ridgeline RTLE. Has every interior feature most $70,000 trucks do and is the most comfortable truck/vehicle I’ve ever been in. I build houses for a living and honestly a ridgeline does everything I need it to do. I don’t tow or off road but watching other videos, the ridgeline is capable enough to do both. The ridgeline is the perfect combo for what I need. Sure I’d like it to be more aggressive looking but in the end I wanted comfort.

The MPG I'm getting is 26.5, and that's after sometimes having to commute 60 miles a day for work.

Going to be seriously shopping for a mid sizer later in the year. I really do like the Ridgeline, good interior space, (presumably) good reliability, and a solid AWD system. The deal breaker for me is the lack of a 6ft bed as I use my trucks for work pretty regularly.
Leaves me between the Frontier and the Tacoma. I've had 3 Toyotas in the past and loved all of them, but the 'Tacoma tax' will probably push me to the Nissan. But I will give both it and the Tacoma an honest shot before I purchase. Nicely done video 👍

I’ve owned the 2023 Ridgeline for 7 weeks 1300 miles. I went from a 2008 GMC Sierra SLE Crew Cab 5.3 RWD with 17” wheels that produced a car like ride. People were amazed how smooth. The same goes for the Ridgeline but I’m definitely not used to the lack of torque having owned GM V8’s for 40 yrs. The Ridgeline supposedly tows 5k lbs & my bass boat rigged with trailer is 3500. The little engine screams when going up inclines but does ok flat areas. I allow for plenty of space on ramps.
After seeing the Frontier’s dash, I’d take it over the Ridgeline & like the Frontier shifter much better especially if anything is spilled. Ridgeline cup holders are next to push button transmission console. Oops design. Don’t like the radio in the Ridgeline either…no SiriusXM. Yeah I can use my ph but….and if GMC hadn’t doubled in price for the same truck I bought in May 2009, I’d be in another GMC. Who knows, maybe even a Frontier. In short I left the big city dealers & selected one 50 miles away that was 6k less for same vehicle.

I have a 2018 Black Edition Ridgeline. It needed new injectors at 39k and a new torque converter at 110k and you have to change the rear diff oil every 20k miles and the transmission fluid every 30k miles. The torque converter was a 5k expense. Luckily for me Honda covered half of it. I’m fanatical about maintenance so I never expected this. I think given the maintenance and questionable transmission I’m going Nissan next time. BTW I also have a 1998 Tacoma 4x4 that I bought new. The engine was rebuilt at 538k and I still use it. The new Tacos aren’t as durable as the old ones from what I’ve seen. The thought of buying a new one with a turbo 4 doesn’t appeal to me.

I know you are limited by vehicle availability, but this is a top Pro4x trim of the Frontier vs a lower trim of Ridgeline. A more applicable comparison would be the Ridgeline Black Edition. I just traded a 2023 Pro4x for a 2024 Black Edition so this comparison is very fresh in my mind. Personally, I found the Pro4x to be unrefined and uncomfortable. The driver's seating position was limited, lacking telescoping steering wheel and height adjustment, which is inexcusable for 45k. Not to mention the buggy infotainment system. I'm also getting older and I don't use my trucks as aggressively off road as I use to, so the Pro4x was far more capability than I needed. On the other hand, the Ridgeline is FAR more refined and feels much better built and is more comfortable on my 2 hr daily commute. You also said the fuel economy was the same, which is false. My Pro4x avged 20.5 mpg in mostly highway driving (after break-in), while my Rdigeline is avging 24mpg in the exact same driving, and it's not even fully broken in yet so that will continue to improve. Rael world fuel economy rarely matches the EPA rating. Both of these trucks are absurdly overpriced but, overall, I'm very happy with my decision to switch to the unibody Ridgeline. It's a solid truck that I'm sure will give me many trouble free years of enjoyment.

Good Video. Thanks. Honda Ridgeline is getting the nod over a Toyota Tacoma for me, but I'm retired and not going to do any more serious towing or building. Comfort, the Ridgelines strongest selling point, has become a desirable thing these days and although the Ridgeline is not a traditional truck it can handle the everyday chores that an older gentleman might need to do. Nissan Frontier is a decent truck and does not have that horrible Nissan CVT transmission, but still over all does it not last as long as the aforementioned two, so it's a no-go.

these are just the 2 models i'm currently considering. as someone who wants to buy the truck i want, maintain it, and drive it for the next 15-20 years, several pros/cons to each for my purposes:
ridgeline pros: on road driving character, comfortable ride, honda proven reliability, j-series engine, 4 inches wider making for a more spacious interior and bed space, in bed trunk, better payload, great awd system that should have every capability i'll ever need
cons: more expensive, needs an update, no full size spare, fwd bias, looks kind of blah, not great ground clearance, push button gear selector and e-brake(blech), honda cars in shortage meaning not much negotiability
frontier pros: looks great, lower cost for equivalent set of features, better clearance, more capable off-road and towing which don't mean much to me, preference for rwd vehicles with option for 4wd when needed, better supply so you can likely get a better deal
cons: uncertain about longterm drivetrain reliability, don't like nissan as a brand but previous trucks were solid(and maybe hasn't changed all that much with current gen), rougher ride on road, rear seat space not good, bed space lacking on crew cab short bed models,
i'll also take a look at the updated ranger and tacoma when they are out. not a big fan of small displacement turbos though. their current gens are no-gos for me. also considering 4runner or used gx460 or mdx/rdx.

Great comparison even though they're completely different style trucks for different uses & needs... but nonetheless, THANK you @VehicleVisionary
I currently own a Frontier, great truck, but the Ridgeline is my dream truck, so that's what I'll be going to asap. I also don't doubt that I'll be very happy. 😉👌
It doesn't matter that some feel the Ridgeline isn't a truck....well, it's "truck" enough for me.
I think that's a slight issue for some consumers that 1, don't do enough or any research....or 2, aren't really car people so they simply don't know or understand.
One of my personal factors when looking for/purchasing a vehicle is... get what YOU need/want, and not what other people think you should have.
Consumers: do your research. If a specific midsized or even full sized truck isn't for you, simply don't buy it, don't bash it....just move on, the truck segment is LOADED with choices. 😉👌

      @trl1980 2 месяца назад

@stw2186 Started w/ tight backseats. People 5'6" and up won't fit. It doesn't ride sturdy. Trucks in general drive rough. That's what I don't like about trucks. I needed an everyday. The Ridgelines' drive quality is superior. It performs as a mid-sized truck w/out sacrificing any ride quality.

@stw2186 Truck snobs will always say it's not a real truck or it's an SUV with a bed. Honestly, it's better than a truck. Calling it an SUV is a compliment, IMHO.

Ridgeline all day. Way more cab space, better economy, tows 5k way better ( I've tried both), night at day ride quality in favor of Honda, trunk, way higher payload. It's seriously underrated by guys that aren't comfortable with their manhood.

For someone who needs a multi-role sedan that's capable of playing the part of a mid size pickup, the Honda stands alone at the top of the heap. The Honda checks most of the boxes. The Nissan is catching up.

I went to see these today, not test drive, just a look and already the Frontier, though I thought it was really cool and manly and all, the back seats are more straight up backing than colorado, or ridgeline or maverick. It's a deal breaker already, because if you do want the truck for family or friends to sit there for a longer trip over an hour, it's not good. Its more like seats of an ext. cab, than a crew cab seating. Someone Stupid designed that. Also, the bed doesn't seem to have any clever ways to support 4x8 sheets of anykind. colorado has slots to put 2x6 or 2x8 to level up with the wheel wells the 4x8 sheet will sit and new one has semi-down position for also support of the sheets with the wheel well or close enough to it. The maverick has tailgate also mid-position to line up with wheel wells for this reason as well. I don't see any in frontier and you'll be forced to have something with you to lay down on the bed so the sheets don't belly down. Ridgeline, I believe is 48" between, so you're good already. The pro x4 by my own measurement only has 8.5" ground clearance and it's suppose to be the off-road version ??? Frontier is off my shopping list.. down to Ridgeline, Tacoma or Maverick.. oh, Colorado is off due to the Stupid ONLY electronic dash and infotainment system and important buttons are part of those screens and not manual buttons.. Stupid gm who thought of that idea. Good chance if go NEW, I'll go with the Maverick. if go 3-4 years used, I'll go with colorado, ranger or ridgeline, depending on how the ridgelines awd system works. need more homework.. for me, light duty project use, so don't need large truck or bed. don't want 10" clearance either..

Frontier is more hp, more torque. If you're just scooting around town by groceries and running errands, then the Ridgeline is your car. If you need to tow and go off road , then the frontier is your truck.
