RUclips is the LEAST passive thing on the planet. You work literally every single minute of the waking day thinking about thumbnail strategy, script writing, better hooks, storytelling, lighting, better audio, crafting better titles. I started a youtube channel because I LOVE crafting videos. After 2 years of working 70 hours per week….I’m finally making a small income. I absolutely love it.

  • @phyllissong

I stopped producing RUclips videos after my son was born. I did find time besides my fulltime job by treating RUclips as a normal hobby. People find time to go to the gym or play video games. So just use this time for RUclips. Having a child makes this process a lot harder. I just can't do it anymore without dismissing other hobbies I have to relax. What I've learned doing my videos, I hate the filming part the most. Mostly because I didn't have fixed setup and had to set up lights, cameras, tune in the settings and everything from scratch every single time. Editing and scripting was a lot of fun and I miss this part. But the actual filming act was never fun. My advide, find a way to have "ready to go" setup to record your videos. Making the barrier to start recording as small as possible is key to stay motivated. At least that's how I see it.

I'm about to start my final year of medical school, where I'll be doing my social service, and I wanted to hear from someone who's managed to balance their RUclips channel and work. I create RUclips videos about physiology, and what you said really resonated with me. When I started on RUclips, I never thought I could make money doing what I love-teaching. I just knew my way of explaining things with animated illustrations could help a lot of people, and it shouldn't just sit on my computer or be seen by only a few at my school. I believed in myself and my talent, and I went for it. It's amazing to see that RUclips rewards you for that

I was just doing one video a week for several months around After Effects tutorials. Over a period a time, I found that my output goal took precedence to where I felt that my tutorials weren't as strong as they once were.
The lesson I learned from this is to identify a niche and work on that specifically to grow. I had a handful of videos do well over Vox-style editing. My focus going forward will most likely be in that realm since my other tutorials around different editing styles weren't as impactful.

Great video! I learned a lot from this video. The main idea is to do something you’re truly passionate about. I saw a video of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates together answering questions from other people, and someone brought something along the lines of if being passionate about a business is important. And Steve Jobs answered whatever it is that you’re wanting to make a business out of it, you absolutely have to be passionate about it. If you’re not, you’ll eventually quit. You’ll eventually burn out and your body will give up.

I started following Ali last year because I came across a video of him talking about starting a website. I was kinda lost at that time, and i was trying to find something that I can look forward to in doing and so i decided that I wanted to write (blogging) and start my own website. I started to post on Quora instead since it is one of the platforms that Ali recommended lol along with Medium and others. My 3rd post on that platform went viral and that gave me a realization that if I can make something go viral then what if I try my luck with youtube?
I created my RUclips channel in January this year and started posting videos. It wasn't until the second half of the year that I began to see (I guess) some traction on my channel. Thank you so much Ali for your videos. You are such a gem and I always look forward to your videos because I learn so much from you and love your voice too! Keep helping others because I know you will continue to touch many lives with your work. :))

Another RUclipsr with a full-time day job here! I'm probably not your target audience since I have a slow, not-focused-on-productivity approach to creative stuff, but this was an interesting watch (first video of yours that I've seen, funnily enough). The one thing that irks me is the idea of outsourcing one's editing as soon as possible - editing is my favourite part of creating a RUclips video, I'd never give it away! The most rewarding thing about my journey as a RUclipsr (my channel has been up for more than five years now) is seeing how much I've improved and continue to improve with my editing, so I like to spend all the time I need on it while making videos. Then again I have that luxury since RUclips is a hobby for me, I don't need to make money from it and my sense of accomplishment and self-worth are not tied to how well my videos are doing.
(also wow, you talk fast - a medical doctor thing maybe?)

I don’t think it’s dumb at all to edit your own videos.
Your videos inspire me so much to create content but with every video you publish I start to feel more alienated by what you say. I’ve started a RUclips channel (not this account) because I enjoy creating content and would love to do it full time. Also it would give me more freedom and allow me to spend more time with my family. So naturally a big objective of my channel is to eventually be able to bring in some form of income to enable me to do just that. I don’t think it’s a bad reason to get into RUclips if there’s a chance it would give me that freedom.
Like that gentleman who asked the question, I too have hardly any time due to my job and a family. This video offered some good advice which I’m grateful for but I can’t help but feel a bit of a sting with one or two of your comments. Sorry Ali.

Full circle, I know 😂😂 The thing that I love here is that you are always realistic with the results. A lot of times when I watch other people they are always like how to get 100k views on first video, get monetized in 3 days, and so on... It is a journey, but If you find out that you love the process than, what is there to lose ?? I certainly find it extremely satisfying and fun to try and create good videos with ton of value.

It is a process. Just focus on daily incremental progress for the videos in however time you have. 2 hours per day, 1 hour, 5 minutes... Just focus on creating in that time.

In my case I started as a way to make money but I stayed for the process and now that I understand how it all works it's just so much more satisfying to create content then before. For example I noticed that most creators this year focus on editing their videos with a lot of transition's, B-roll footage, images, music, etc... And all to make their videos easier to watch and understand. So basically trying to keep viewers from getting bored 🥱 and skipping your videos. Even this video if you watch it from that angle you can see that he is mixing talking head scenes with images, and B-roll shots..... It's very interesting to me!

Embarrassingly, I've been thinking about starting a YT channel for over 5 years now, and I keep putting it off. I've watched so many videos like this (including multiples of yours) and purchased the PTYA course. I'm starting to really internalize these lessons which I've seen over and over, and it makes the idea of actually starting less daunting. I feel silly for having squandered several years where I had lots of time to put into making videos. I'm about to start law school, so the timing isn't as ideal, but better now than waiting another 5 years. Thanks for continuing to make these videos with valuable, straight-forward lessons for getting started, especially as a busy person.

Não precisa esperar para começar, muita gente acharia interessante vlogs do seu cotidiano na faculdade de Direito. Eu também adiei por anos a idéia de ter um canal, mas decidi que esse ano seria o ano!

25:13 Yes, I will still do it even though I would never make money from it. I started my channel as many, to make money, but after almost 2 years now and getting over 600 subs (I was not consistent in posting)... the comments from viewers, in many cases thanking me for the videos, sharing their experiences... it is just so nice feeling that at this point I want to keep doing this even if doesn't make money at all. RUclips is beautiful, really changes your life, for good.

I'm also a healthcare practitioner, working full time on the NHS while trying to "jump start" my channel and it's hard, but not inpossible. I guess the name of the game is: consistency, good content and time. But it's nice to see that's possible if you commit yourself, even when juggling a full time job.

Starting new channel can be really tough if you don't plan everything ahead. I knew I couldn't afford to waste months trying to get noticed by just a handful of people. Instead of spending months to get few hundred subscribers, I found how to get organic growth immediately (by using a bit of Fame-ster of course). Ever since I started using this tool, my channel blew up and I realized that people tend to focus on numbers when searching for content. Having a low subscriber count often means being overlooked, even if your content is top-notch...

Thanks a lot Ali for this video! I'm a video-podcaster also having a RUclips channel and at the same time working full time. I've done this same explanation you did in the video multiple times when people ask me how I deal with having a full time job and still create regular content. The most common question is always is if I have hobbies at all or a life besides podcasting and working😂 Which I absolutely do, I play Futsal, do Improv theatre, go out with friends, have a girlfriend... But I also have ambition, enjoy doing this and most importantly I have processes and consistency in place which allows me to not lose my mind 🧠

I really struggle to believe that simple editing will do the job for beginners nowadays when we see such professional work everywhere. So if you're starting out and don't have the resources to outsource editing you are reliant on teaching yourself. As you said a video like this one takes so many hours to edit.
There really are so many things to learn and practice in the first videos that you cannot really estimate how long everything is going to take. It feels like a constant struggle of competition against the final bosses of YTbers with huge teams behind their backs.
