As someone who worked in start-ups his whole life, there's a lot of overlap that I translated to my channel. 5 year runway. Deep research. Establishing a value-prop. Fast evolution. I've said to a lot of people that getting good at building a RUclips channel sets you up very well for managing a business in general. This is not a video about being a youtuber, it's how to start a sustainble career/ business
Great video btw - this video in a nut shell
    - Find your interest, align with the market wants (Longer term career sustainability)
    - Be different and specialise (Why the market will want to pick you than another)
    - Test small (Wasting time, effort, money and brain energy is certain - keep this to the minimum)
    - Find a MVP - minimal value product (Develop an edge with mininal resources)
    - Use the sciencetic method (Can't get it right the first time, get feedback quick, amend, test again till desired result)
    - Be consistent with the basics and do it well (Advance tech is just many basics clumped together, it's the basics that need to be done right to get the outcome)
I appreciate the effort you put into these videos, it's interesting to hear about the process on how this is applied in the youtube space 🥰

  • @phil_marshall

So, for sure this video is a certified banger, so good and thank you so much for all this information given through those 46min.
I can clearly identify to it and for the first time, I'm watching this kind of video while having a community of 20k followers on insta, and a fast growing channel, to my perspective at least, all that acquired in 3 months. I completely agree with "allow the network to come to you" as it's exactly what's currently happening to me with my channel Un Pourcent.
One interrogation I've having now is about the frequency of posting vs innovating content vs depth of talks on my podcast vs time needed to edit and release content.
Let me explain : First videos were 40min each maximum and took around 2 hours to edit, do the cuts and stuff. Problem was that 40min is super short when speaking about autism, getting in the confidence with the person and go super deep. That length was ideal though to interview up to 5 people on the same day. But now I'm releasing videos of 50min to 2 hours long, and that takes now a lot more time. And as my job pays me very bad, I need extra money so I work as a freelance, study and grow my channel at the same time..
Result : The deeper I go to add value to my podcast with deep topics that are truly appreciated by the community, the longer it takes to edit, the less consistant I can be, from 1 video/week to 1 video/2-3 weeks. It also has an impact on posts frequency on Insta and Tiktok, where so far the audience remains luckily with the same engagement so far but I don't know how it will evolve on long term.
Steve job said "Innovate or die". So I want to innovate by proposing new formats with some more mainstream concepts. But that also takes time and it's a road to burn out if I do that kind of productions now. Plus, these videos will be a new workflow and therefore, it will take even longer on the first episodes lol.
Your video was absolutely awesome to put words on how to grow/start your channel and I needed to watch it. Now my challenge is how to keep that value my podcast is bringing to the community of "invisible" autistics, while innovate new formats and all that while keeping the consistency of posting.
The game could change soon though, as I'll be opening a new forum with a monthly subscription of 5 USD. If the mass subscribes to it, then I won't need my job anymore, but with 20k subscribers, I doubt it will take off so quick.
What would you do if you were in my situation ? Would you try to push toward innovating new concepts to "not die" and keep the audience growing - despite less frequency of posting, or would you stick to the interview format ?
Thanks so much for your channel, been following you for a few years now, when you were still shooting in your car. Bon travail ;)

@@benjaminfairbourne But if you want to retain viewers you have to first get them to click, hence why it's so important to talk about the packaging of the video. Would you click on a video that has the title "My first minecraft world" and a thumbnail that looks auto generated by youtube? Or would you rather click on a video titled something like "I survived 100 days in Hardcore Minecraft" with a thumbnail that has the skin of the creator looking toward the camera and 100 days in a bold font or something? The more viewers who click, the more viewers you *can* retain.

100% true. I LOVE photography and wanted so badly to be a professional architectural landscape photographer, however it never seemed like something attainable and I wanted to make money from photography NOW, because I truly loved taking photos and the editing process. So instead I starting doing family portrait photography and wedding photography, which paid the bills, but was so not satisfying for me. People just aren't what I loved photographing. Moral of the story: simply being in the industry you love won't cut it unless you're doing something you love and are passionate about (or are at least on the path of getting there).

I am so here for the longer form content at 20-30 min. being standard! People who are sitting down to watch RUclips on their tvs already expect that length of entertainment, if not longer sometimes. Such a thoughtful video, thanks guys!

Solid episode overall, but a correction on CTR:
Do NOT take CTR at face value! It is an extremely context dependant variable. What a 'good' CTR is depends so much on your niche, supply and demand for the type of videos you make, how long after upload you look at CTR, which traffic source impressions & views come from, how broad your impressions are and much more...
Getting hung up on a specific CTR is nothing but a big distraction from the things that actually matter. Once you gain experience on your own channel it can be useful to judge whether you should try new packaging, but only if seen in the right context. Such as comparing it at number of impressions rather than time since upload & and comparing within the same traffic source.

I would love a series where you go in depth education into each of these topics like a 40min video on thumbnail, 40 min video on ideation, etc. I think those videos would have great cpms for you guys. alex hormozi is doing in depth education style video series on business topics like sales marketing etc and you guys could do a more niche version of that like youtube business and separate it into different topics such as editing, filming, thumbnail, title, ideation etc

54% of adults wanting to be influencers is utterly depressing

    • @philip2205
      @philip2205 4 месяца назад +5

Did you honestly take that number at face value-no grain of salt or digging or anything?
If you look it up, you'll see it's from an influencer marketing agency, Izea. See the conflict of interest?
The study also says 26% of social media users consider themselves "influencers".
The "study" asked 1200 social media users in the US. Consider, now, that Izea is targeted towards influencers. Hence, this survey most definitely skewed towards "influencers". Considering this, and that many people online like to lie in polls, these numbers are not weird.-It's like asking a room full of people at an influencer conference if they consider themselves influencers.
I am shocked sometimes at how incompetently or misleadingly carried out studies like these are - and at how many people take them at face value.

@@philip2205 I think you need to take this up with the creator of this video my guy. I didn't post the number, I just reacted to it. I've got no skin in this particular game so I'm not going to waste my time doing research on it that you did on it as I value other things more. Even if the number is 26% or even 10%, I still find that depressing.

@@aaronhall5715they said creators not influencers… Just because you have an idea of an influencer being x in your mind doesn’t mean it isn’t a valid career path. Say you’re a music producer helping other producers turn their passion into their hobby. Or you’re a gym creator doing coaching, is that really that crazy? It’s just a personal trainer digitalised… you wouldn’t have an issue if someone said they wanted to build a business, but then they talk about it online and help others and suddenly it’s depressing? See what I’m getting at here? You need to expand the way you look at creators, they’re the modern day teachers at scale, just it’s a more modular online education since people are realising college may not be for them more and more

I cannot thank you both enough!

I really resonate with the 85% rule. Had a recent video that I released where there was a lot more in that extra 15% that I wanted to do in terms of pacing, audio, and a few other details. I didn't want to hold myself back from releasing it outside of the deadline I set. A few days go by and it turns out being my most viewed video on my channel at 350k+ views. While there were some comments pointing at the things I wanted to improve, overall the feedback was extremely positive and showed that perfectionism has a time and place.

The strange thing about social media is that you can put a lot of effort into making quality videos and staying consistent, yet see little to no results. I’m not upset about the 5 subscribers I have, since I do it mostly for fun and to share value with viewers, but it’s a bit frustrating when others put 10x less effort into their content and still get 100x more views and subsribers. It’s a weird space (just like the world in general). Anyway, don’t let it get to you-just keep going and don’t give up!
