The cause doesn't necessarily need to be tentacle cutting, but it could be
@@rassicas I am pretty sure it was confirmed that the octo samurai was a octarian. A way you can tell it developed from a octarian is the fact that it has tiny legs and a red side with suction cups on their back. I do believe the Octo samurai is definitely more advanced than other octarians. Since it has literal arms.
I see them as having a mix of both mammalian and oviparous reproduction. They would have umbilical cords, but also egg membranes as some sort of residue from their ancestors. The egg membrane would also serve as a source of protection and even a source of nutrients for the developing skin of the baby and would be removed after it is born (some babies can easily eat through it while some need some help getting out of it). I think Inklings/Octolings would nurse young similar to platypuses (they lack teats) with ink secreted from their head tentacles and the baby would lap it up like a puppy.
So here is how I think it works, octolings are made from natural reproduction, once at a certain age they can make octarians, you can tell because the playable octolings have smaller tentacles compared to the enemy octolings. You might be wondering what a octarians turns into later in life. It becomes its own organism, like the octo samurai, he has his own defined body with actual arms.
Honestly I thought this was kinda obvious to be the case. Plus, the rival octolings have one short tentacle while agent 8 doesn't, which to me seems like they cut off a tentacle to make an octotrooper and its just starting to grow back. Considering all rival octolings have the short tentacle, I'd assume it's like sort of a coming of age ritual for octolings in octarian society.
With this talk about octo troopers and the like being "severed" from tentacles, would it make sense to think that they are possibly just cut off from octarians themselves, possibly the elite rival octarians or some we haven't seen, and then developed into the octo troopers we see in game? Another thing to think about is that if they were specifically developed under a controlled environment, they wouldn't need to wear the hypno glasses that the rival octarians use. This would also possibly explain the Octo Samurai, since he doesn't wear any glasses either, so he could have been developed for much longer than the octo troopers, hence the superior limb count and humanoid form, similar to octarians themselves. Additionally, something else to think about is why we don't see Octavio's human-like form, as well as why he has an X shape scar on his tentacles. Could the octo troopers possibly be created from Octavio himself? It always struck me odd as to why the devs chose to put a giant green X on him besides it being a giant "kick me" sign. Especially since in nature, octopi have the capabilities to regenerate limbs and such, so this is entirely a plausible thing to happen. I have no evidence for this, but that's all I can think about when thinking about this topic. Also, awesome video! I really love the deep splatoon lore, and I'm really glad someone finally is covering it! Keep up the fantastic work!
Interestingly, all of the Great Octoweapons/ Octobosses also have the green X scar on the tentacle. We know from a sunken scroll that a severed tentacle is placed inside the Great Octoweapons/ Octobosses to control them, so I think it’s implied that Octavio himself is controlling the bosses, or at least has some connection to them. It might seem like a stretch, but the developers even got rid of the scar for the octo expansion version of the bosses, since I guess they’re just copies made by Tartar and not actually creations of Octavio
@@TheCosmicCloud One of the scrolls shows Octavio being put into a machine that copies his scarred arm and gives it extra intelligence, which is then used on the Octostomp. The Octarian text on that scroll translates into English and provides more info but I forget what it says other than how “frightening” it is.
Rival Octolings don't wear hypno glasses. Those glasses don't mind control them. They just help with aim. The only confirmed set of hypno glasses are the ones that were used on Callie.
My interpretation is that Inkings and Octolings reproduce in the same manner (they co-existed and essentially evolved alongside each other after all) however during the Great Turf War the Octolings needed an edge, a way to effortlessly create more soldiers ready for the battlefield. That way they could easily outnumber and overwhelm Inkling forces. This led them to experiment and eventually create Octarians through an incubation of sorts with cut tentacles. So the tentacles could be taken from Rival Octolings, with the idea that the Octarians then have advanced combat skills at the moment of consciousness. We see cut tentacles in the Sunken Scroll that remain unchanged, so I do believe something is done to them in order for an Octarian to start growing. It's entirely possible that some naturally develop the ability to take a humanoid form because they have Octoling DNA (or something like that). (This is head cannon/theory stuff, ignore it if you want.) It would explain why Octarians have so many forms compared to Octolings, as they're continually experimented on and adapted for specific Octarian weapons. We know they experiment with Salmonid eggs and the tentacles in the Great Octo Weapons are sentient, so experimenting on Octarians doesn't seem far fetched. Needing some form of incubation would also explain why (more so in Splatoon 3, from what's been shown in trailers) Octolings can cut their tentacles into different styles with no consequences. Octarians retreated underground but the war efforts never stopped, so they continued to create more Octarian soldiers and perhaps defected/injured ones are just left to adapt into their society (or worse have been cast out to reduce population numbers and that's how Octarians wound up in the Deep Metro) and have been accepted as common place. And as a small extra thing, trying to introduce Super Soldiers into a peaceful society might explain why Octarian plushies are a thing, what better way to assure the younger generation that these super soldiers are friendly and trustworthy? -Totally unrelated but I want one.- It'll be interesting to see if we run into any Octarians adapting to life on the surface in Splatoon 3, seeing as Splatoon 2 suggested that only Octolings had reached the surface. Sorry, I know this is long, I got carried away. I'll stop now. XD
Thank you to everyone in the Premiere chat that actually followed what I said even if it was as a joke, anyways I’m going to go drink a capri sun or something
I never understood the whole octarian thing until now, thank you, this was some seriously important lore I was missing here. Also I have to say that the idea of octarians being severed tentacles is ingenious.
My headcanon is that idols have differently shaped pupils and hair because inklings and octilings can shape-shift and they have enough personality to make themselves stand out
In the current year, the enemy octolings have been given curves and are a bit taller from what i could tell from my own screenshots. They no longer use the child body of the inkings and i love that. it also explains why playable octopuses have smaller tentacles.
I've always assumed that Octolings are the real members of the species, and the Octarian soldiers and bosses and stuff are just overgrown severed tentacles created to be disposable operators for weaponry
I always thought that the playable octolings and rival ocotlings were two separate sub species of octarian, since there's a male and female playable one yet there hasn't been a male rival (yet maybe) so I always thought that playable octolings since there's 2 genders would reproduce with a partner and the rivals reproduce asexually by cutting off a limb. It is also strange when you consider how different playable octolings actually look to all other octarians, because all other octarians (including rival) have that purple eye ring thing and that playable ocotlings are the only ones with varying skin tones and also only playable ocotlings actually change their hair colour depending on their ink colour and all these traits segregate playable octos from all the other octarians. There isn't a distinct lore reason (not including the obvious gameplay mechanics reasons) so maybe they are like how real world octopuses look very different from each other because they're different species of octopus and maybe the playable ones evolved from a different kind of octopus and the octarians were an asexual octopus and playable not? Just my theory I thought I'd share because it's the only thing that makes sense to me with the info we currently have
I thought that the reason there are no rival male octolings is because the males are the ones who are working on the machinery and weapons, while only the most elite octoling girls get to become rivals. I might be totally wrong though
The interview outright states that the only difference between the rival octolings and the playable ones is that the rivals are just the elites out of the octoling girls( again same as the playable ones) and are a few years older. There is no difference in species between the two. I think the implication is that the male octolings working under octavio are working behind the scenes in some other role the agents never see, as they are just not allowed to join combat alongside elite female octolings for some cultural reason.
It doesn't make sense for them to have different ancestors though because they pretty much share all features. Although, evoloution never made much sense in splattoon anyways so interpret it as you will.
@@colecube8251 I do believe that octarians work on technology. But I think that the females are the only ones able to cut off tentacles to turn them into octarians.
Idk why but the Octopus + Amazon meaning for Rival Octolings made me really happy. It makes sense, and hopefully someone who knows more about the Amazons could reveal some possible social hierarchies (more than we already know)
A likely in-universe reason why only female octolings are soldiers is that in the real world, female octopi are larger than their male counterparts. Thus, females would be the dominant sex, which might also explain why unlike inkling society they have a male idol.
Thank you so much for making a video about this topic. I always wondered if the Octarians were related to Octolings in some way. But since Octo Expansion I had a feeling that Octolings have indeed the same or similar life stages as the Inklings, and that Octarians don't have that same life stages as them. But thanks a lot for sorting it out more clearly :D
I wanna include another detail into my argument disputing the idea that Octolings reproduce asexually. Both female Inklings and Octolings have hips that are larger in width than that of their male counterparts. This is also the case in humans. The reason why female humans have wider pelvises is one that centers on reproduction. Females have wider pelvic brims as a way to maintain greater clearance for the baby that is being expelled from the womb during the birthing process, thereby making it more efficient. If that is the case, then it can be said that the same logic would apply to Inklings and Octolings as well. As such, it can be safely assumed that said species give live birth, a feature that is almost exclusively attributed to sexually reproducing organisms. Video for reference ruclips.net/video/yYxnzzfNS80/видео.html
What if they just grab a octopus from the ocean, surgically cut off a tentacle, add another then shove them on a robot looking like a inkling and hide their head within the head of the robot and boom octolings. When they transform they just quickly jump out of the robot which cloaks itself and boom “”””transform””” why did i think this

Dark asf fact: Octopus when they mate...the female one will snack the male one...when the female octopus lays eggs, she will quit eating and wastes away(basically rotting), and by the time the egg hatches...she dies This process is called senescene where after an octopus mates/lay eggs...they die Woah...luckily they didnt add THIS kind of things in da splatoon lore, if not it'll get as dark as my mind
Nice to see that this is confirmed, even though I already knew the answer going into this. And speaking of developer interviews, if I recall correctly, they also said that the Octarians use severed tentacles that are animated using some kind of technology to create Tentacle Octarians. In other words, simply cutting off an Octoling tentacle doesn't make an Octarian, you have to do something special to it before an Octarian is created.
I'm glad this was cleared up. I always thought that Octolings could reproduce and develop the same way Inklings do, just not the tentacle-like Octarians, because that made more sense if Octolings were supposed to be the octopus versions of Inklings. Another way to think about it, kinda going back to biology, is that Octolings (with their ability to transform the same way) seem to be the full octopus, while the others are just tentacles. An octopus can reproduce normally, but a severed tentacle can't. Thus the tentacle-like subspecies of Octarians are the ones that need to be created through the severing of tentacles, and the same rules don't necessarily apply to Octolings.
tldr: Octolings (unlike other Octarians) reproduce sexually and the only real difference between a rival and a playable Octoling is age and canonical skill level. also dude, your sniper skills (5:10) are insane!
That’s neat and all, but what about the Octo Samurai? What’s odd about him is that he has a floaty death respawn soul or whatever they’re called…does that mean he’s some form of Octoling despite his more non-human look? I mean, we’ve seen strange looking inklings before (every single band member), so it’s possible that Octo Samurai is an octoling…but I’m still not sure.
Something cool I wanted to note is that the rival octolings' hairstyle, and the standard hairstyle for playable female octolings (the "tentacurl"), have all the tentacles in the same spots, but at different stages of growth. The (older) rival Octolings have larger tentacles, apart from the one on their front left, which is tiny, just beginning to grow in. That lines up with the *largest* tentacle in Agent 8's hairstyle. I think once a tentacle got big enough to create a new soldier from, it would be cut off right away; people point out Marina growing her hair out as a potential way of distancing herself from that. One more thing I want to point out, though, is that this pattern also actually lines up with Dedf1sh's hairstyle. It seems like a further progression from the Rival Octolings' style, where the largest *back* tentacles were cut off and the front ones grew out more. So it seems likely that dedf1sh is actually older than any of the octolings we fight or play as, and also likely a former soldier! I think that's a pretty neat detail that not many people notice.
My personal headcanon for octoling reproduction is somewhat of a combination of the severing tentacle thing and sexual reproduction, that two or more octolings cut off one or more of their tentacles and fuse them together, creating a baby octoling
well a form of egg is involved no matter what, unless its asexual reproduction but this rules that out. If you mean "do they hatch" ye that's another question.
Considering that most if not all molluscs (incl. terrestrial species) are oviparous, that's the safer bet However, -lings might have become viviparous/ovoviviparous in their evolution to terrestrial humanoids
I’m guessing the reason that there are humanoid rival Octolings on the “Octarians” page in the first art book is that the page mentions how Octotroopers come to exist from tentacles that are cut off of a host, and the Octolings are there as an example of a host.
I like looking into Splatoon lore especially something like this pretty nice to dive deep into lore or figuring something out that's been a question for a while.
This is an unrelated question but: Why are there no males in the Octarian army? Like are just a Matriarchal society where the women are in power and the men are the second fiddle? But then if that's the case how come the individual holding all the power in their FACTION of Octoling society a man? Like IK based on Octo expansion that male Octolings EXIST? Maybe they're the ones who make weapons and sully machinery? But then in context, how did agent 8 (The male one) End p at the metro?
I like to think when they grow older their "hair" thickens but the purple eyes are more or less war makeup, since only elites get them and marina, who is older, still has the signature thick octo "hair" but not the purple mask
So basically octolings are just octopus versions of inklings however because of their real world counterparts having a “brain” in each limb when a limb of an octoling is cut off it becomes an Octarian similar to that of an octotrooper etc
i think that explanation for this is that few octarians evolve getting hand and more humanoid form, while others most likely dumber octarians (bc they are dumber they won't like to evolve, thence octoling getting insulted if someone says they are octarians) stay in form they are just getting bigger, but there are also instances of half evolution like samurai octarian boss from splat 2 where he is smart enough to evolve, but not enought to change too much.
And this is why I wanna play as an inkling in splatoon. The biology is so much more simple (even if it is still complicated as all hell) But my friends say octoling fits me best as a person and for my overall complexion. And maybe it isn't how we think it is. I just don't want octolings eyes to turn yellow and purple as they age. It doesn't make sense for one and two, it isn't the most aesthetically pleasing thing
During this video, the notion of Octolings that don't fight in the Octarian army made me think of a Splatoon 3 mission that has you clearing out an Octarian population center, with unarmed Octolings running around scared of you, cowering in fear, all while the other agents tell you to splat 'em all. Could make for some pretty good scare factor.
so the the playable octolings are just the rival octolings i always thought that the playable octolings were an inkling-octoling hybrid but ig now in that sense then the smaller the suction cup on octolings the younger?
Octopi having brains in every arm along with their *main* brain would certainly explain why Octarians are smart enough to develop much more *advanced* technology than the Inklings; also, could DJ Octavio be the Octopus who's arms the other Octarians are made from? And yeah, I'd have to imagine the Octolings are the *original* Octarians, since DJ Octavio is shown to have a humanoid form like the Octolings in the *first* games Sunken Scrolls; I'd imagine they'd reproduce the same way as the Inklings while the *lesser* Octarians were made by cutting Octopi arms off.
My speculation is that playable octos are a different type of octoling. Like how in nature there are more than one species of octopus maybe that aplyes to our playable octolings aswell, for example how the hair of a rival octo looks along with ours
I'm now really curious if Inktarians (inkling versions of octarians) will ever exist I won't lie, I've been wondering this since 2018 but I finally have an appropriate video to comment this on
So Octolings can reproduce/grow like inklings, amazing! But now how do they actually reproduce? Like humans? Like squids/octopi? Are there Inktarians which are basically mindless Ink Soldiers? Keep this up! ~~Also: ”certain” artist would ignore this info if it pointed the other way~~
Man this interview was surely helpful to differentiate Octoling and Octarians I surly hope the devs doesn't make a humanoid Octarians boss that when splated show to have a spirit like Inklings and Octoling 😉
@rassicas Ithink that since the girl octolings fight and the boy octoling hair styles have only one tentical it might be that in octoling culture it is that the boy octolings purpose is to cut off its tenticals and create more octo troopers
With the knowledge that Octolings reproduce similarly to Inklings, and that Octolings are now entering Inkling society, I would honestly like to hear some discussion about whether or not something like hybridization is possible. I'm very interested in hybrids in general and would like to hear the thoughts on if an Octo-Inkling hybrid or something like that may be possible with how similar the species have become over time. Personally, I like to think it might be possible. I know that hybridization between a normal squid and a normal octopus couldn't happen, but in a world where two similar species of cephalopod gained sapience and similar, anthropomorphic forms in the span of 10-12,000 years, who knows what's possible in terms of their genes.
What if Octolings are made by blending tentacles like the weapons of mass destruction..? Like a baby form, and then they mature like inklings..? Idk... Also can we have a video on Octarian mind control? (Goggles, glasses, music, whatnot)
Ok that could clear up the boss tentacle but then it raises even more questions you know what I’m talking about how is dj octavio different and all that
@@laurenmoore1532 yea but you kinda missed the point all the bosses have a weird green X on their tentacles including dj octo but dj octo has them actually part of his body
Octavio is an octoling, so not made from a severed tentacle and instead through more natural means. I think it's implied the bosses are made from octavio's limbs, and he just grows his arms back like real world octopuses do
Now, my friend created a specific theory for this. Octarians aren't meant to have belly buttons, smaller tentacles, and a more softer facial expression. If we're judging from the octo expansion in general. You can see HV Bags, a freeze dry factory, and especially the very beginning you start off with green goop everywhere, seemingly in a tube. 14/16 shouldn't be too big of an age different to the point an OCTARIAN would look insanely different to an OCTOLING. Octarians whilst confirmed that derive from their ancestors' tentacles. Octolings may be created the same way, only altered to behave more of an inkling. Going through all these tests and experiments, we may as well confirm that OCTOLINGS are NOT pure Octarians, but rather EXPERIMENTS, using a natrual Octarians' DNA. Which explains also why we only see sanitized Octarians, and not sanitized Octolings. Octolings were not meant to be created and killed off immediately, but rather they were created solely for the purpose of undergoing tests that eventually led up to the blender. Because there's a factory full of these guys especially, an Octoling would be produced daily and so forth. Occasionally they find their way out of the metro on their own, and without TarTar they wouldn't be required to undergo tests. Still, it doesn't stop the production of Octolings in general. So this may be the only way they're reproducing, through freeze dried Octarian DNA.
Idea is also supported with how TarTar was obsessed with watching the Inkling society, so it's quite understandable if he wanted to recreate Octolings to behave and look more closer to Inklings. Also, "Lings"

A way you can tell it developed from a octarian is the fact that it has tiny legs and a red side with suction cups on their back. I do believe the Octo samurai is definitely more advanced than other octarians. Since it has literal arms.
I think it could be both octolings and the samurai, and the samurai has gone into a Octavio-like lack of shifting between the forms
he might be like that stretched out octarian
I always believed that Octolings where naturally reproduced like humans and inklings, hence why they have a visible belly button
*gasp*
What if cephs are actually viviparous?
I see them as having a mix of both mammalian and oviparous reproduction. They would have umbilical cords, but also egg membranes as some sort of residue from their ancestors. The egg membrane would also serve as a source of protection and even a source of nutrients for the developing skin of the baby and would be removed after it is born (some babies can easily eat through it while some need some help getting out of it).
I think Inklings/Octolings would nurse young similar to platypuses (they lack teats) with ink secreted from their head tentacles and the baby would lap it up like a puppy.
This is quite unrelated but
in real life, after mating, a male octopus dies i think
@@justdove1346 Ocotolings probably would’ve evolved so they don’t die after mating

Now I want a spin-off where you play as an Octoling from start to finish, fighting against Squidtarians
Octo expansion 2.0
(That could not happen)
This is going to be hella interesting
-Totally unrelated but I want one.-
It'll be interesting to see if we run into any Octarians adapting to life on the surface in Splatoon 3, seeing as Splatoon 2 suggested that only Octolings had reached the surface.
The octarian weapons are exaggerated versions of this
Maybe the reason the idols/octoling rivals have differently shaped pupils, is because they change later in life? It would make sense with this info
My headcanon is that idols have differently shaped pupils and hair because inklings and octilings can shape-shift and they have enough personality to make themselves stand out
Nice, easy to understand and canon-friendly explanation. Amazing video!
That's what made the most logical sense to me, too.

Omg I just realized octo-troopers have tiny little legs
Our lord and saviour Ki has posted. Can't wait to see all the different shirts for each video!
tldr: Octolings (unlike other Octarians) reproduce sexually and the only real difference between a rival and a playable Octoling is age and canonical skill level.
also dude, your sniper skills (5:10) are insane!
In splatoon 3, shashimori made new songs, and the cover shows the young octo being fully developed
There is a "haircut" in splatoon two that severs the inkling tentacles so if there where squid troopers they would have been discovered by now
That's impossible
I watch this on my break at work
My personal headcanon for octoling reproduction is somewhat of a combination of the severing tentacle thing and sexual reproduction, that two or more octolings cut off one or more of their tentacles and fuse them together, creating a baby octoling
So Octarians are made by severed tentacles and Octolings are created by regular reproduction?
Correct, although confusingly 'octarian' is a term that includes octolings. but yeah u get the idea
Holy crap the tweet became a video
And now comes the question that’s on our minds right now…
…are eggs involved? Enough said.
Addendum: Emphasis on the “do they hatch” question.
well a form of egg is involved no matter what, unless its asexual reproduction but this rules that out. If you mean "do they hatch" ye that's another question.
Considering that most if not all molluscs (incl. terrestrial species) are oviparous, that's the safer bet
However, -lings might have become viviparous/ovoviviparous in their evolution to terrestrial humanoids

Could be!
I personally think octolings are just the normal squids and the other ones are just tentacles
And this is why I wanna play as an inkling in splatoon. The biology is so much more simple (even if it is still complicated as all hell)
But my friends say octoling fits me best as a person and for my overall complexion. And maybe it isn't how we think it is. I just don't want octolings eyes to turn yellow and purple as they age. It doesn't make sense for one and two, it isn't the most aesthetically pleasing thing

in that sense then the smaller the suction cup on octolings the younger?

Yeah, I definitely agree!
What if Octolings are made by blending tentacles like the weapons of mass destruction..?

My ZL button is broken so I guess there are humanoids that can't turn in to squids are real.
